Greer Innovation, A Scholarship For Creatives
Creativity is something that drives people to success, something that can make the impossible possible. My names Owen Drissel and throughout my life creativity has been the driving factor to achieve my dream. My dream is to become a pilot and explore the world. Creativity has had a huge impact on that goal. For starters I wanted to find a career path that not many people embark on, or in other words take the path less traveled. So becoming a pilot seemed very appealing, not as a appealing as becoming an astronaut but I guess I could forget about that for now. Anyways, creativity for me has influenced my life in a lot of other ways too. Whether it's in my English class where I love to write essays that argue a side that not many people would agree with. Or in my engineering class where my group is creating a frame from plastic for our robot instead of using the standard parts given to us. In my life I find creativity to be in many ways worth the challenge because then I'm able to stand out and make whatever I'm doing meaningful. Currently I'm a senior at Wilmot Union Highschool and as of now many would say our school is kind of in the dumps. We recently switched to a 1 through 4 grading scale from a normal A through F scale and nobody, including myself, is happy with this. Of course this essay is about creativity and innovation and as many of our "Glorious" principals will say, this change is to make us more accountable to our grades and encourage actual learning. However I would say this change is the opposite of innovative and extremely uncreative. I believe that the problem does not lie in the grading system but in the teachers. For starters changing the grades teacher give won't make a course any harder or inspire anymore learning that doesn't take place now. That true learning lies in the teacher's ability to do their job. I am by no means calling out any teachers at my school, I am however calling into question our principal's argument. That's the very reason Wilmot could use some more creativity, because right now our genius principals are trying to fix a problem with a solution that will change nothing. If they really wanted to change the school for the better they would work on hiring quality teachers who inspire us students to learn. Well I may have gone a bit off track, I think again creativity can have the power to make great things come true. And as shown at my school the lack of it can create some pretty big problems. I would be honored to win this scholarship, Thank you for your time reading my short essay.
