My name is Oreoluwa, and I am a 17-year-old Nigerian-American who is passionate about computer science. As an immigrant to America, I have faced unique challenges and opportunities that have shaped my perspective on the world. I am committed to social justice, specifically addressing the issue of education inequality that is prevalent both in Nigeria, my birth country, and the neighborhoods where I have lived. I am hardworking, dedicated, and ambitious when it comes to achieving my goals. If given the opportunity, I hope to use the scholarship funds to further my education in computer science and pursue my dream of creating a more equitable education system. I am eager to become a catalyst for change and give a voice to the marginalized and voiceless in our society. Thank you for considering my application.

Struggle, struggle, struggle. That was what it was like to be a first-generation student in America. With the education in America being severely different from that of Nigeria I could often find myself struggling for hours on end to complete assignments, often serving as a barrier to my progressin in education and catching up with classmates. All of that changed on one faithful day. I saw flashing lights and words buzzing across my screen snatched my attention. Thousands of years of human knowledge, research, and creativity all jam-packed into one singular device, and all for free..for the most part. When I used my first computer in a Queens public library and I discovered the vast amount of opportunity to learn and grow. This moment was a turning point for me, and the moment I realized my privilege of being able to get a good education in America, not only through physical school but through online videos and articles. It made me think back on the stories my parents would tell of their schooling “back home”. I realized that education in America and education in other less fortunate countries around the world are very different. This is a huge issue. To progress as a society we have to make sure that all people around the world receive a proper education. We need to give people the tools to be able to make informed decisions and think creatively. All members of our world deserve the right to an education and a good one. I truly believe that this is the only way that we will ever progress as a society. My experience taught me hard work and perseverance. Education inequality is an issue that is prevalent in my birth country of Nigeria as well as several neighborhoods/communities I have lived in, oftentimes condemning them to poverty and unemployment because of a lack of quality educational resources. Despite there being many resources online as well as online courses that have been made in an attempt to balance out this inequality while learning in traditional classrooms learning can be tailored based on the student's strengths and weaknesses, it is something that educational tools online lack. However, I believe that through the use of computer science and artificial intelligence, we can simulate classroom environments and can bridge this gap by recreating a traditional classroom environment that adapts to each student's unique needs, and finds what method of teaching works best for them to ensure that everyone can receive a quality education tailored to their needs. This is what led me to create Einstein. Einstein is a tutoring application utilizing generative AI and Python that has helped several kids in my community. It is a personalized and adaptive learning experience that adjusts to the unique needs of each student, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of their academic strengths and weaknesses, as well as empowering students to take control of their learning and achieve their academic goals. I developed this to solve education inequality in my community and am beginning to see the impact. I have also integrated Einstein into my Discord tutoring server, where it is available for everyone to use free of charge, helping students with suggestions for their essays as well as helping them study and find the best way for them to study. With the money from this scholarship, I would be able to pursue my bachelors in computer science, using the knowledge I gain from my degree to compute for good, making sure that kids who were like me don't have to go through the same struggles that I went through.

I hope in my career to further develop Einstein and make it into a model where everyone's social, emotional, and educational needs are all incorporated into one single program, giving them the ability to learn at their own pace in a way that is tailored to uniquely them. This will not only help address disadvantaged children but also intellectual gifted children. By using the knowledge I gain from my degree to compute for good, making sure that gifted kids who were like me don't have to go through the same struggles that I went through.
      Book Lovers Scholarship
"Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld, a book about the idea of beauty and the importance of self-acceptance. In "Uglies," the society is structured in a way that everyone is required to undergo cosmetic surgery at the age of 16 to become "pretty." We follow the main character, Tally, as she navigates the challenges of conforming to societal beauty standards and ultimately discovers the truth behind this seemingly perfect world. As someone who has struggled with self-acceptance coming to America as a Nigerian immigrant, this book meant a lot to me. It aims to show that there is beauty in all of us, regardless of our physical appearance, and that self-acceptance is key to happiness and fulfillment. The novel also highlights the dangers of conforming to societal norms without questioning them and the importance of individuality and self-expression. With the age of growing technology and social media, people often find themselves depreciating their self-worth or growing mental health issues from comparing themselves to one another, and competing for things such as likes and follows. People have begun to stray from the idea of self-acceptance and find value just being themselves and completely, wholly, themselves. Self-acceptance is the foundation upon which we build our sense of self-worth and our ability to lead fulfilling lives. It allows us to embrace our flaws and imperfections and recognize that they are an integral part of who we are as individuals. When we accept ourselves, we can live our lives without constantly seeking validation from others and can form authentic connections with those around us. Self-acceptance also enables us to pursue our passions and take risks, knowing that failure does not define our worth. It allows us to let go of the need for perfection and instead focus on progress and growth. When we accept ourselves, we can recognize our strengths and work on our weaknesses without self-judgment or criticism. Without self-acceptance, we are vulnerable to negative self-talk and destructive behaviors. We may seek validation from others or engage in unhealthy habits in an attempt to feel better about ourselves. This can lead to a cycle of self-doubt and self-criticism that can be difficult to break free from. When I needed it most it was a reminder that true beauty comes from within and that we should all strive to embrace our unique qualities and strengths, I hope to share it with others.

If I had the money and resources I would solve other problems, such as the lack of access to counseling/therapy, especially in immigrant households like my own where paying for things like that is looked down on. If I could I would use technology to connect people with free one on one counseling session and advice, helping reduce issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

In the future, I hope to be able to use my computer science degree as well as use computers/technology to provide free, good education to every student around the world, and overall create a more equitable world. When I graduate I hope to look back and say that the skills I have acquired in college, whether this is through traditional classes or other learning experiences have prepared me to create change in the world and advance society through the application of my field/study.
