Greetings. My name is Nelson Ponce-Real. I am a sophomore at Charleston Southern University. I have always been passionate about attending one of my top favorite schools in South Carolina, where I am majoring in Graphic Design. From a mental standpoint, graphic design is one of my enjoyable passions. I am an aspiring artist, hoping to design various spectacular works of art I hope to create. I have also wanted to become a bassist as my side job when the time suits me. Other than that, I am so thrilled to have the opportunity to have my eyes set on my career, which is an opportunity I will deeply cherish for the rest of my life.

When I grew up, I was a massive video game fanatic, especially Playstation and Nintendo. Super Mario 64 was my first ever game I grew up with to the point where it only took me a week to beat it. Then as of today, I shifted my passion for games primarily for the Nintendo Switch where I am part of the esports team for my school, Charleston Southern University. In the esports team I play Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. In Super Smash Bros, I am a Pyra & Mythra player, alongside Wolf and Piranha Plant, but perhaps the game where I am highly competitive in has got to be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I have participated in numerous Mario Kart tournaments across the state of South Carolina. The most recent tournament I participated in was in Greenville, SC, where a gaming convention was taking place correspondingly. It was a doubles tournament and initially I did not had a partner but a girl named Elise was chosen to be my partner, and surprisingly, we dominated the tournament where we ended in 4th place overall. Elise is such a very competitive Mario Kart player, around my skill level to be exact. Communication and strategy are the traits that allowed me and Elise to place farther in the top ranks. The tournament alone was one of the most unforgettable experiences in my life that I will forever cherish in my heart. Even Elise felt the same way after the tournament, so I also want to give her a massive shoutout for being the best duo partner in the tournament. Ultimately, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has always been my top passion primarily because to be skillful, it all comes down to memory, anticipation, and awareness within the environment. These traits are also beneficial as it allows me to amplify my confidence, communication with others, and decreases stress correspondingly. All in all, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the game I will forever cherish in my heart, alongside Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
Chris Struthers Memorial Scholarship
Around my last two years of high school, I began to develop a passion for visual arts especially on the computer. Upon graduating from high school, I started to enhance my passion and desire to create the most visually stunning graphics I have ever designed. First semester of college were mostly basic core and pre-elective classes for my graphic design major. For beginners, we started off in concepts of drawing, sketching and even blending with still life samples. Initially, it was more of a challenge for me as I was already used to digital art from the computer. Then gradually I performed well in drawing, which makes me understand on how drawing is an excellent form of concept for aspiring designers. When I draw something I learn to see with a different, more focused awareness. I start to question why things appear in a certain way, correspondingly helping me understand on how things are constructed, how light interacts with surfaces and how the blending of colors affect each other. Drawing allow me to think creatively, and one of the best ways to improvise on my creativity is through sketching. They are rough drawings used by designers for planning and productivity. Personally, the drawings do not need to be perfect but instead I use them to think of a visual way to gets ideas down on paper. After mastering drawing, I finally reached the opportunity on shifting over to visual communications where it primarily focuses on the usage of visual elements to convey information and ideas. It can be a more efficient and accessible way to share knowledge than written communications. To me, visual communications serve as a gateway to various graphic design opportunities as well as more detailed tips and strategies in design. When I mastered the concepts of visual communications, at that moment, my passion for graphic design reached its peak. Since then, I have been involved in various activities as well as being promoted to graphic designer at my workplace where I make graphics for special events at my college's gym. Aside from the promotion, I have been designing for clubs and special occasions, such as my Esports team, Students For Life, various community organizations off campus, as well as personal occasions from friends and family. Ultimately, graphic design has been my utmost passion to the point where part of my career is starting my own designing business and craft some of the best detailed brands, logos and designs for companies and businesses I collaborate with.
Wendy Alders Cartland Visual Arts Scholarship
Throughout my late teenage years, I have developed an utmost passion in not just arts, but visual arts to an extent. When I was young, my artistic options were only limited as most of the stuff we relied on to get started on art revolved around pottery and acrylic painting. From my personal experience, both pottery and acrylics were excellent aspects to learning the concepts of art. After a long time of mastering pottery and acrylic painting, starting college back in 2021 is when I had the chance to learn about visual arts. From drawing, to acrylics at a professional level, sketches and lastly, digital art, all of these artistic concepts help perfected my artistic mastery into a level where it suffices on returning back to the youth within under-resourced communities. Within companies or businesses that start off small, advertising can be a challenging factor to bolster their business goals. Hence, why I developed a passion for visual arts by bolstering advertising for aspiring businesses by grasping and paying attention to every meticulous detail I can detect. Not only that but visual arts has always been something I strive for since I am the type of person who prefers to take it easy and relax instead of straining too hard on the work I put in and visual arts is something that does not seem to fall within the category where every energy-draining effort is essential. I enjoy taking it nice and slow on perfecting my work and master the tranquility on what art truly defines as. In it, visual arts is also something that is not wise to rush and to score for the utmost results, it is always best to take your time. Even when I shifted over to digital art and illustration, the demand for hard earned effort remains unchanged compared to the arts I have learned back then. With a combination of a wide variety of artistic concepts, this allows me to shift my attention on amplifying aspiring businesses that seem as if they are starting small. While I do not mind focusing my attention on businesses that are deemed big or of high value, it never hurts to go back to the youth and its communities and provide the most resources through means of visual arts and communications. Ultimately, as an aspiring graphic designer, I strive to collaborate with other establishments and communities that are seeking to improvise their ways of communicating with important clients, whether it is through advertising, stunning designs, and more importantly, visual arts.
Davidson Scholarship for Volunteers
Throughout my time at Charleston Southern University, since freshman year, I have been a part of various volunteering opportunities within clubs on campus. From being part of the esports team to be a valued member of Students for Life club. For the Students for Life club, where we are fighting against abortion, I have become a valued member by getting involved in volunteering opportunities they have offered throughout the school year. As part of volunteering for the club, one of which was I joined the club for a canned food drive at a local church, collecting as much canned goods as possible and donate them to neighborhoods or shelters in need. The impact it had upon myself and others is it allowed me to bolster my willingness to share my generosity amongst others. As someone once told me, the good you put into the world always has a way of returning to you. This line hit me hard for years as it shows me the significance that whatever I get in return will be in abundance. Whenever I constantly be a part of volunteering for community projects, I am basically upholding my generosity and share my kindness amongst others who are struggling in life, whether it's starvation, homelessness, or even financial struggles. By continuing to volunteer, I am creating a massive mark in the world where countless people will begin to notice the amount of work I share with everyone, also showing that I truly care for those in need. Students for Life club has not only perfected my generosity by offering volunteering opportunities, but it spiritually grew my faith with the Lord by teaching me the concepts of generosity and how volunteering is an amazing example. Before joining the club or even went to college, I still had various opportunities to grow my faith on volunteering for the community for my town where majority of my family lives. My church in particular, every Sunday we would hold youth groups ranging from spreading the word of God and in some occasions, be part of the community involving in fundraisers, canned good drive, and working on distributing donated clothes to those in need. Ultimately, whether I volunteer for a club, non-profit organizations or even family occasions, I never grow tired on creating an everlasting impact amongst others who are struggling in need. The more you share your faith and generosity, the greater reward it will return to you.

Entering higher education as an outsider to the system fills me with a mix of hope and anxiety. As a second-generation immigrant, my journey has been marked by unique challenges and opportunities that have profoundly shaped my educational path and future aspirations.
From a young age, I observed my parents navigate a new country with resilience and determination. They immigrated here with dreams of a better future for their children, and their sacrifices have always been a source of inspiration for me. However, their unfamiliarity with the educational system often meant that I had to figure things out on my own. Simple tasks like understanding report cards, applying for scholarships, or even choosing the right classes were daunting without guidance. I remember the confusion and frustration when my friends talked about SAT prep courses and AP classes, things that were completely foreign concepts to my parents.
Despite these hurdles, being a second-generation immigrant has instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for education. My parents' stories of overcoming adversity have driven me to excel academically. Their struggles have taught me the value of perseverance, and I’ve come to see education as not just a pathway to personal success, but also as a means to honor their sacrifices. Every A on a report card, every accolade, feels like a step towards fulfilling their dreams.
However, this journey is not without its concerns. As I prepare to enter higher education, I worry about the lack of representation and support for students like me. Will I find mentors who understand my background? Will there be resources available to help me navigate the complexities of college life? These questions linger in my mind. The fear of being an outsider in a predominantly privileged space is real. I often wonder if I will fit in, if I will be able to connect with my peers whose experiences differ vastly from mine.
But alongside these fears, there is hope. Hope that higher education will provide me with the tools and opportunities to make a difference. My experience as a second-generation immigrant has fueled my desire to give back to the community. I aspire to be a role model for other immigrant students, showing them that it is possible to overcome barriers and succeed. I want to use my education to advocate for more inclusive policies that support immigrant families, ensuring that future generations do not face the same challenges.
In the end, my journey as an immigrant has shaped my goals in profound ways. It has given me a unique perspective on the importance of diversity and inclusion in education. Throughout my college career, art, whether it's through acrylic painting or digital art, has always been an utmost passion I strive to follow through after attending college. While there are numerous role models that I consider as biggest life influencers, I consider Mrs. Carla Marchione to be my biggest influencer in my life.
When I first started majoring in graphic design, Mrs. Marchione was my academic advisor during that time. She is the reason why I created a self passion into graphic design, ranging from digital art to drawing. The way she characterizes and digs deep into the concepts of the art field proves to be effective on not just sharing on how to proceed, but also offer tips and ideas that also benefits throughout the field. Other than that, it was also one of my hardest moments in college when she mentioned about a new job opportunity at another university. I have no negative doubts as I know for sure she will keep doing amazing things as an art professor. Not only do I consider her my biggest influencer, but I consider Mrs. Marchione as one who shares her creativity and skills with all of her students.
In regards to utilizing my artistic skills upon graduating, I strive to get in the concept of multitasking between the development of brands, banners, logos, or any form of art. Starting things out, I use the Adobe program and its various applications to help me get started on creating visually stunning graphics. On top of that, it also gave me insights on how to start my own website and come up with the most suitable art combinations. Additionally, I set to collaborate with others, whether it is individuals, entire companies, or even entrepreneurs. Anyone who are looking to bolster their advertising and amplify their brands, then I am more than willing to share my commitment within the career of creating visually stunning artworks.
Lastly, what makes my artistic gift different compared to others is from my point of view, I see as graphic designers as those who set forth their passion into art, regardless of how much detail they put into their artwork. My boss, who I do graphics for special events at the school's gym, once mentioned to me these similar words, which is why he promoted me to graphic designer not because of how much detail I put into my work but primarily my heart and its passion for art. Ultimately, as I move forward even after graduation, I strive to create a commitment to improve my versatility in any form of art I can access.

Ken Landry Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my time in high school, I have always shared my passion towards both cross country and archery, mainly cross country. Outside of my time in school, I would go for jogs every week at a park that is only 2 minutes away from home. Additionally, this happens to be one of my favourite parks due to the gorgeous 1.5-mile trail paved into brown mulch created by the city, making it easy for any joggers to run on.
Within school, I would get involved with my fellow cross country members and go for jogs around downtown. The key to keeping up the momentum in cross country is finding a constant pace that is comfortable for one's self as well as minimizing as much energy as possible. Otherwise, using too much energy in a matter of time can lead to poor endurance and slower times within a designated jogging length. Initially, while I was one of the faster runners, my below-average endurance was what kept me behind the pack constantly. I have always made these tendencies by using too much of my energy in a matter of minutes. Then when I began to go for feasible but comfortable jogs along the trail at the park, I started to further increase my endurance. It allowed me to aim for faster overall times depending on the length of a jogging meet. When it was the big day, that is when I began to notice my improvements drastically becoming a reality. As such, I managed to aim for an overall lap time of 29 minutes, in which to stay in the cross country team, you cannot finish a 3-mile run over 30 minutes. The fact I was only a minute away from 30 makes me believe that every bit of effort can incredibly make a difference. Additionally, it also served as a passable alternative to exercise, especially when I started to lose weight at the age of 17. It was one of my most life-changing experiences as before then I used to struggle with the thought I may be gaining weight too rapidly, and I still strive to exercise to keep up a suitable weight balance. Interestingly, my physical achievements for my body were not the only goals I focused on. When I got involved in archery, it allowed me to stimulate my thoughts of being calm under pressure. For instance, to aim for a designated target I want to successfully hit, I would have to remain calm under pressure as much as possible.
Ultimately, making an impact on others requires compassion, great communication, and healthy bonds between one another, and I will not ever hesitate to share my encouragement for a healthy mindset, physically and mentally towards others.
Reginald Kelley Scholarship
As an upcoming college senior majoring in graphic design and a minor in web development, I have always shown my utmost passion towards the career I have been following throughout my time at college. I realized that my dream career leans more toward subtle but not physically demanding. Instead, it primarily leans into taking things at a slow but feasible pace. That is what graphic design truly desires.
Of course, upon majoring in graphic design, I had to start with the basics. From drawing to creating thumbnails, every concept in the courses based on my major each served as stepping stones towards my career. Then, when I got to a more intermediate level of my career, that is when I began to utilize technology such as computers for digital art content.
To intertwine with my graphic design major, I also started to minor in computing web development, which is basically underneath the computer science field at my college. Courses for my minor primarily focused on programming classes underneath these fields: C++, Java, and Python Scripts. How this minor fits with my major is that part of my career is I am hoping to start my own design company, coupled with a website, dedicated to creating logos or brands for any company that is seeking an excellent designer like myself.
Additionally, what I started to begin noticing is web development minor is one of the few minors that closely fits with graphic design, due to the fact they share common courses that are required for both graphic design and web development. This is one of the primary reasons why I chose web development to go along with my graphic design major. Coupled with my experience in creating websites and mobile app prototypes, I can always acknowledge from my perspective that web development is a great option to go with a major like graphic design.
As far as making a difference in the world throughout my career, I strive to cultivate healthy relationships as well as be involved in collaborations with other aspiring companies. To start it off, I began creating a company logo for my father's construction/carpentry company and I plan to reveal it to him on his birthday in a few weeks. On top of that, I even created a website for his company. Ultimately, after I help bolster my family's lifestyle through my career, I set to strive to collaborate with businesses and whatever tasks they want to achieve, my heart is always willing to immediately get jobs done in a matter of time.

From a young age, I found solace and expression in drawing, sketching out fantastical worlds that I could escape into. One summer afternoon, as I sat in the park sketching, I was fascinated by the colorful world I was creating on my tablet. I spent hours with my eyes lighting up with each stroke of the digital pen. That day, I realized the profound impact my art could have on others, sparking joy and imagination. This moment cemented my resolve to pursue a career in graphic design, not just for personal fulfillment, but to positively impact the world around me.

My passion for the arts runs deep, encompassing various forms of creative expression ranging from painting and music to writing. It's a realm where my right brain comes to life, allowing me to explore the depths of imagination and emotion. Unfortunately, the pursuit of artistic passions often incurs significant financial burdens. My left brain, with its logical and practical outlook, recognizes the financial constraints that hinder my artistic journey. In truth, my unemployment status is the primary source of my struggles in keeping up with my finances. Additionally, I do not qualify for federal work-study, which prevents me from applying for an open job position on campus. Along the way, I narrow it down to nothing but relying on available opportunities off campus. These past few years have been nothing but rigorous obstacles that I have encountered since I enrolled in CSU. From financial struggles to falling to the levels classified as poverty, I am shown every effort within myself to accomplish my necessities so I unwillingly do not end up withdrawing from CSU. As a whole, my unemployment status is the biggest obstacle I have endured in my life.

For instance, penicillin is an antibiotic that bolsters the human body system, more specifically, the immune system. As such, to develop penicillin, it is synthesized in a lab utilizing penicillium mold. Through fermentation, the mold outgrows the sugars until the penicillin is completely separated from the mold. For nearly 7 years, it has been an astonishing dream to pursue the biochemical field as a laboratory technician. To take it safe I decided to further bolster my education by enrolling in college. At first, I attended a community college to save up money. After two years of enrollment at a community college, I then transfer to a university where I am majoring in biochemistry, while at the same time, minoring into graphics design. When I graduate from college in 2024, I plan to go even further through my education by studying to become a laboratory technician that determines the types of diseases, that way I can provide information for the doctor to go through and what the problem truly is. Ever since I began to enroll in my dream university last year, there were a wide variety of obstacles I had to endure that would prevent me from further bolster into my career. To summarize the novel, the main protagonist, Cia Vale, was chosen to be a part of a rigorous assessment called The Testing, hence the novel's name. Passing the examination will award those with a free pass to a university at no cost but also be a part of an astonishing career they will mentally cherish in their lives. While preparing for the assessment, her father informed her about the dark truth of The Testing. It turns out he was part of The Testing. Her father breaks down some of the dark aspects the program contains along the way. To make matters worse, making one single mistake, regardless of how small it was, can result at the cost of someone's life.
Overall, this novel hit close to home, specifically in an exciting way. There was one lesson I have discovered while reading the book. One was that I might have to step out of my comfort zone and take action for my well-being and future with every effort I need to proceed.
