Bio

Hello! I'm Noshin (pronounced know-sheen), the daughter of two Bangladeshi immigrants, currently pursuing a B.S. in Neurobiology from UC Davis. I'm originally from the Bay Area, where the same goals unite individuals of all backgrounds: do more and do better. Since moving to Davis, that focus has not wavered. I've consistently maintained a 4.0 GPA and have been on the Dean's Honor List every quarter. More importantly, my commitment to leveling the playing field in medicine remains just as strong as it did growing up. I am fortunate to come from a diverse community, but the number of times people have tripped over my name or misunderstood the purpose of my hijab proves that our society has a long way to go. I want to be one of the fierce individuals who are changing that. I want to show that scientists can wear scarves and Islamic clothing. They can be male or female, both or neither. They can have two arms, or one or three or none. They can love guys or gals or our nonbinary pals. The point is representation matters, especially in a world where illnesses don't care about the differences between us. A diverse set of physicians can empathize with a diverse group of patients, which allows better communication and care. As a pre-med, I believe our future rests on the shoulders of physically and mentally healthy individuals. That begins with a compassionate healthcare team, and I want to be a part of that to positively impact the world. I am grateful for your consideration and willingness to invest in my future. Thank you for your time!

    Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
From a young age, I have been inspired to pursue a career in the medical field due to a combination of personal experiences and a desire to make a positive impact on people's lives. The key moment that ignited my passion for healthcare was witnessing the dedicated care and compassion provided by medical professionals during my sister's critical arm injury in second grade. Her bone had snapped in two, and a portion was tangled with a nerve. Had the medical team responded any later, the head doctor remarked that she may have had permanent paralysis of her left arm. The empathy and expertise demonstrated by the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff touched me deeply, eliciting admiration for those committed to helping others in times of vulnerability. They were quick, methodological, meticulous, and experienced, and in responding appropriately, they saved my sister from a lifetime of difficulty. The selflessness embodied by the medical staff inspired me to seek a career that could make a meaningful difference in people's lives, the way my sister's life was benefited. Additionally, I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and the complex mechanisms that enable it to function. This curiosity, along with my knack for biology and physiology, has fueled my desire to learn more about medicine. Learning how to treat the complex system of our bodies is captivating. The prospect of continuously expanding my knowledge, skills, and understanding of medicine intrigues me, as I believe that the ever-evolving nature of the field presents countless opportunities for growth and contribution. Looking ahead, I envision my career as a healthcare professional to extend far beyond the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. I aim to foster a holistic approach to patient care, emphasizing the importance of emotional support, empathy, and patient education. By establishing meaningful connections with patients and their families, I hope to alleviate their anxieties and enhance their overall well-being, realizing that compassion, understanding, and listening are as integral to healing as medical expertise. Reflecting on the global healthcare landscape, I am aware of existing disparities and challenges, especially in underserved communities like my parents' hometown in Bangladesh. As part of my commitment to making a difference, I intend to actively advocate for health equity and social justice within the medical field. By cooperating with nonprofits and volunteering my skills in areas afflicted by inadequate access to healthcare, I aim to empower underprivileged individuals with the resources and care they deserve. I plan to contribute to ongoing research efforts, seeking innovative solutions to healthcare issues that can positively influence public health policies. To achieve my goals, I am dedicated to pursuing comprehensive medical education and training. Through rigorous academic pursuits, internships, and hands-on experiences, I aim to acquire the proficiencies and expertise necessary to provide the highest quality of care to my patients. Whether it be through specialized clinical practice, medical research, or working in healthcare administration, I intend to remain adaptable, adaptable, and constantly evolving to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry. Throughout my life, I have been inspired by the demonstrated compassion, unwavering commitment, and transformative potential of the medical field. My experiences and innate desire to serve others have solidified my resolve to pursue a career within the healthcare profession. By embracing patients as individuals, seeking innovative solutions to healthcare challenges, advocating for equity, and continuously growing as a professional, I envision making a profound and lasting difference in the lives of those I serve.
Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Alzheimer's disease, a debilitating disease that affects millions of people worldwide, has far-reaching implications for patients, families, and communities. I am fortunate not to have a direct experience with the illness, but I have witnessed its impact on my extended family and community through my grandfather's illness. By observing the impact of his condition on my mom, grandmother, and family members who live near him and care for him, I have learned many invaluable lessons from this challenging journey. Alzheimer's disease exerts a significant emotional toll on both the patient and their families. As memories slip away, the patient loses their sense of self and becomes a mere shadow of their former selves. This is heartbreaking for family members who witness their loved one's cognitive decline, realizing that cherished memories and shared experiences will fade forever from their loved one's mind. For example, my grandfather used to be the loudest in the room, always engaged in animated conversations and excited to go out and meet new people. Now, he barely talks to anyone and prefers to stay alone in his room. As his primary caretaker, my grandmother has to take on emotional baggage. Emotions such as frustration, grief, and helplessness often plague families as they struggle to support their loved ones. Alzheimer's disease also poses practical challenges that disrupt the lives of individuals and their families and caregivers. As the illness progresses, patients struggle with basic daily activities such as bathing, eating, and walking. This increases the burden on family members, who often become full-time caregivers. Balancing work, personal lives, and the responsibilities of caregiving can lead to exhaustion and burnout. In addition, the financial strain of funding long-term care or hiring professional assistance can be overwhelming, worsening the toll on families. Alzheimer's disease also affects the worldwide community. As the population ages, the prevalence of Alzheimer's is expected to rise significantly. This burdens healthcare systems, which may struggle to provide adequate care and distribute already overstretched resources, especially since no "easy" cure has been discovered. With increasing costs and strained resources, community support groups, memory care facilities, and educational programs become critical to helping individuals navigate through the challenges of Alzheimer's. Having observed the emotional impacts of my grandfather's illness on my grandmother and mom, and the financial and practical effects on my extended family, I have gained an appreciation for empathy and compassion. Witnessing my mom cope with the pain of watching her father forget her has taught me the importance of being understanding, supportive, and present during these difficult times. Small acts of kindness make a significant difference in someone's life, especially those dealing with the impacts of Alzheimer's disease. I am now studying neuroscience as an undergraduate and researching brain illnesses, and I've recognized the significance of education and awareness. Learning about Alzheimer's disease and sharing this knowledge helps reduce stigma, encourages early diagnosis, and promotes understanding. When I attended neuroscience club meetings, I was surprised that many people didn't know the difference between Alzheimer's and typical age-related memory problems. I started engaging in community initiatives, such as walking to raise money to support Alzheimer's research, and doing what I could to raise awareness on my campus. I spoke at club meetings, distributed flyers for events at the UC Davis Health Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and organized discussions with graduate students to stay up-to-date with the latest discoveries and advancements. I regularly volunteered at the Hearts and Minds Activity Center throughout high school, a daycare program for dementia patients to stimulate their brains with engaging activities. Together, I believe we can inspire change and build a more supportive society for those affected by Alzheimer's. The impact of Alzheimer's disease on individuals, families, and communities is undeniable. The emotional, practical, and financial challenges often take a heavy toll. However, by acknowledging the impact of Alzheimer's and working together, we can ensure that no one faces this devastating illness alone. We can provide the necessary support, improve the quality of life for those affected, and strive toward finding a cure for Alzheimer's disease.
    Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
I speak in masked praises and discreet criticisms, cutting remarks falling as easily from my tongue as drops of rain. I am unrepentantly sarcastic, and my favorite song on Taylor Swift's 1989 album, "Blank Space," is the same. The track stands out to me because of the maturity by which Taylor reclaims power for herself as she turns media criticism about her personal life into art with a self-aware wit and satire. By transforming the public depiction of her as a heartless serial dater into music that blurs the line between truth and fiction, Taylor faces negative rumors with both vulnerability and playfulness. Rather than letting the media hurt her, she embraces her public persona and wears accusations like armor. She won't allow the world to shame her for her "long list of ex-lovers," because she's already admitted it herself. As a female influencer, Taylor uses "Blank Space" to challenge stereotypes and take a stand for women's empowerment. The lyrics of "Blank Space" are a testament to Taylor's storytelling prowess, capturing both the highs and the lows of relationships with humor and sarcasm. From the start, the song's upbeat melody grabs the listener's attention. Later verses explore the excitement of falling in love while acknowledging the heartbreak and self-discovery that often follow. Taylor masterfully captures the complexity of emotions and the uncertain nature of romance with contradicting words and phrases, such as "magic, madness, heaven, sin" in the first verse and "So it's gonna be forever / Or it's gonna go down in flames" in the chorus. Not only are the lyrics perfectly crafted, but Taylor also uses a catchy composition to intrigue listeners from the opening notes. Taylor seamlessly harmonizes pop and alternative music with layered and multifaceted vocals to create an impactful tune that seems to be designed to remain stuck in one's head for hours. Her vocal delivery was intentional as well; throughout the song, she alternates between playful and seductive tones to communicate how "screaming, crying, perfect storms" describe the nature of the "reckless" and "insane" woman she's illustrating. Apart from the music itself, the music video for the song is yet another masterpiece. Taylor's dark humor and eccentric creativity pull through in a clever take on the romantic-horror genre. Her portrayal of an alluring yet dangerous and mad protagonist adds to the feminist message of the track. From silly, playful scenes like biking in the living room to burning clothes and breaking cars, the music video depicts the descent from simple love to heartbreak and insanity with startling, creepy clarity. What makes "Blank Space" my favorite song in the 1989 album is its role as a biting response to media criticisms and as a promotion of women's empowerment. The poignant lyrics, with their witty one-liners, sarcasm, and vulnerability, blend perfectly with a catchy tune and eerie music video to accentuate Taylor's immaculate vocal performance. The powerful message it says about the contradictions of love and relationships shows Taylor's exceptional talent as a singer and songwriter.
    Learner Calculus Scholarship
I've always been the type of girl who dreams in numbers and words. Whereas my sister thrives in the unexplored realm of art, my creativity flourishes in the straightforward, unambiguous overlap between math and science. As a researcher, I love calculus because it is a problem-solving shortcut. With precise methods and formulas, thinking outside the box to solve real-world issues becomes much less daunting. Determining the blood flow rate through the hearts of cardiac patients can be done noninvasively with blood pressure readings and the Hagen–Poiseuille equation. Conservation efforts improve by comparing the natural population growth of an endangered species with and without intervention using survival and renewal functions. And, more importantly in recent years, finding the number of individuals infected by the coronavirus at any given time to plan vaccine access in dynamic populations is simply a matter of implementing transmission rates into a matrix model. The world is a complex and active system, so it's only logical to take advantage of challenging and elaborate procedures like calculus to make sense of all the changes around us. Calculus is the key to locate certainty in uncertainty, to uncover solutions and patterns, and to use that knowledge to benefit the world. From medicine to architectural design to radioactive decay, calculus is present everywhere in the STEM field. Chemists can use it to model the motion of subatomic particles and chemical systems; physicists and electrical and mechanical engineers employ it to analyze the behavior of electrical and mechanical systems; architects and civil engineers utilize it to optimize construction designs. The versatiliy and applicability of calculus can help anyone understand virtually all physical and technological processes. An important tool such as calculus can be used to help living things, big and small, humans and non-humans. For example, calculating the changing rate of drug degradation in the body can find cures to the deadliest illnesses, help with addiction recovery, and enable pharmacists to make informed decisions about dosage. On the other hand, keeping track of changing populations, food sources, and predatory influences on endangered red pandas can help ecologists and park rangers determine which limiting factor to focus conservation efforts on to help the animal species. Calculus is a powerful and versatile tool essential for everyone interested in STEM. It provides the mathematical foundation for understanding all of our world's physical, technological, chemical, and biological systems. Not only does it enable a more profound insight into our world, from the subatomic level of physics to the macroscopic level of biology, but it also provides shortcuts to answer questions faster, more efficiently, and with deeper understanding.
