The journey of many Hispanic students, particularly those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education, is often marked by unique challenges. My path is a testament to this reality, rooted in a complex family background. My grandfather's decision to immigrate from Puerto Rico in the early 1970s was driven by the pursuit of better opportunities, despite facing meager earnings of only $20 per week. In an era marked by limited educational and community support, families like ours often found themselves relying on what was termed "The Street Life" for survival.
At just nine years old, my life took a drastic turn as I entered the foster care system due to my mother's heroin addiction and my father's incarceration for attempted murder. Severed from my family and siblings, I was thrust into a world where I had to learn to fend for myself, drawing strength from emotions of anger, fear, and disappointment.
By the time I reached seventeen, I found myself grappling with the responsibilities of parenthood while still navigating my educational journey. Unable to continue schooling, I ventured into the workforce, enduring a transient lifestyle that often saw us residing in shelters and hotels. It became evident to me that I needed to break the cycle that had been passed down through generations of my family.
Eventually, we managed to secure a modest one-bedroom apartment, where I took on the added responsibility of caring for my partner's children from a previous marriage when they, too, became entangled in the foster care system. Balancing a full-time third-shift job at a K-mart warehouse with waitressing at the Ground Round Restaurant, I defied stereotypes and persevered, even taking on a second job at Walmart.
Despite the numerous challenges and relocations, we faced, I remained steadfast in my determination to find stability and pursue a career aligned with my passion for helping others. From serving as an assistant teacher for children with autism to transitioning into a role as a residential counselor for foster youth, I found fulfillment in making a difference in the lives of others.
Tragedy struck in 2009 with the sudden loss of my children's father in a canoe accident, thrusting me into the role of a single parent. Despite the immense emotional toll, I worked tirelessly, clocking 80-hour weeks to provide for my family both emotionally and financially.
In 2012, I made a conscious decision to break the cycle of adversity by obtaining my GED and leveraging community resources to become the first homeowner in my family. This act of empowerment not only transformed my own life but also allowed me to pay it forward by relinquishing my Section 8 housing to a family in need.
Today, seventeen years later, I remain committed to my job while dedicating myself to supporting youth aging out of the system. As a single mother of three, I have also extended my support to my son's friend who faced similar challenges in the foster care system.
Driven by a desire to create lasting change, I have returned to school to invest in myself, with the goal of establishing a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting young adults beyond the age of 22. Through providing access to affordable housing and financial education, I aim to pave easier pathways to homeownership for first-generation minorities. I firmly believe that our past and trauma do not define us; rather, it is our aspirations and actions that shape our identity, regardless of our history.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Advocating Mental Wellness: Empowering Women for Academic Success
In the vast expanse of academia, the journey of a college student, especially a woman, is adorned with challenges, responsibilities, and aspirations. Amidst the whirlwind of demanding coursework, persistent assignments, and the inevitable juggling of part-time employment, college life reveals itself as a myriad of commitments. Yet, within this bustling atmosphere lies an undeniable truth: the paramount significance of mental wellness.
For women navigating the intricate paths of academia, challenges abound. As they passionately pursue their academic goals, immerse themselves in extracurricular activities, nurture social connections, and embark on a voyage of self-discovery, the burden on their mental health can become palpable. Studies confirm this reality, indicating a higher susceptibility to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among female college students compared to their male counterparts.
This gender disparity in mental health finds its origins in societal pressures, the weight of lofty expectations placed upon women, and the looming specter of financial stress due to tuition and living expenses. From a tender age, women are ingrained with the notion to strive for perfection, excel in every facet of life, and adeptly manage multiple responsibilities. However, the harsh reality often diverges from this idealized image. The pressure to excel academically while simultaneously balancing personal and financial obligations exacts a toll on women's mental well-being.
In my journey, I exemplify a steadfast commitment to mental health. I conscientiously reflect on how my mental well-being impacts my academic pursuits and personal life. Furthermore, I am engaged in full-time work in the human services field, where I assist others in building the skills necessary to support mental health and enable them to live independently in the community. Through utilizing school therapy sessions and embracing tailored self-care routines, such as engaging in DIY projects, embarking on leisurely walks, indulging in recreational reading, and cherishing moments with family,
I actively prioritize my mental wellness throughout the week.
Women facing mental health struggles often bear the weight of multiple responsibilities, particularly as single mothers. The challenges they encounter are manifold, as they navigate the demanding task of raising children alone while grappling with their mental well-being. Balancing the intricate schedule of children's activities, household chores, financial management, and aiding with schoolwork places an immense strain on their mental health.
Amidst the chaos of daily life, finding time for personal endeavors, such as attending classes and completing homework, becomes a daunting task. The relentless cycle of caregiving and managing household affairs can exacerbate feelings of stress, anxiety, and overwhelm, further complicating their mental health journey. Yet, despite these formidable obstacles, single mothers persist with unwavering resilience, demonstrating extraordinary strength in the face of adversity.
In conclusion, nurturing mental wellness transcends the realm of luxury; it emerges as an imperative for women embarking on their academic odysseys. As they chart their course through the labyrinth of college life, let us empower them to embrace self-care, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to their mental health. Through these endeavors, we pave the way for a future generation of resilient, triumphant women, who defy the odds and ascend to greater heights.

Unlocking Potential: A Journey from Foster Care to Building Futures
My journey has been one of resilience, growth, and a relentless pursuit of creating positive change, despite the adversities I faced as a foster child. At the age of 9, I entered the foster care system, where I encountered significant challenges that would later shape my passion for helping others navigate their journeys.
One of the initial hurdles I faced was falling behind in school due to my birth parents neglecting to enroll me on time. As the oldest and tallest in my first-grade class, I needed intense one-to-one tutoring to catch up to the right age group and academic level. This early experience ignited my determination to overcome educational obstacles.
Despite my efforts, high school brought its own set of challenges. Struggling in classes, I faced discouragement from an English teacher who wrongly convinced me that I was the problem, not my ability to learn like others. Eventually, I dropped out, feeling defeated but determined to find my path.
My career trajectory shifted when I entered the workforce, starting in retail and later finding my calling in schools for disabled children and group homes for non-profits. In my late twenties, I began as a residential counselor, working my way up to supervisor and later securing a position as a life skills coach. It was during this time that I recognized the impact I could have on the lives of vulnerable individuals.
In my thirty's, I made the pivotal decision to pursue my Hi-Set. As an undergraduate student, a single mother of three, and a first-generation Hispanic college student, I embarked on a journey to gain a formal education. I was driven by the desire to understand the business end of human services, laying the groundwork for my dream of opening a business.
Currently managing a program for adolescents transitioning into independent living, I play a crucial role in guiding them through essential life skills. My commitment goes beyond the standard work hours, as I am on-call 24/7. This role, coupled with my experiences, inspired me to pursue a degree in Business Management to bridge the gap between Human Services, housing, and entrepreneurship.
My goal is to open a business that provides affordable housing and shelter for homeless children who age out of the system. These individuals often lack the skills to live independently and do not qualify for adult services. Through education and empowerment, I aim to give them the tools needed for a successful transition into adulthood.
Navigating life as a single woman, balancing various responsibilities while pursuing education, I am fueled by the conviction that my unique experiences empower me to effect meaningful change. Although my academic focus is not on public services, my 18 years in Human Services have nurtured a genuine passion for aiding others, stemming from a deeply personal perspective.
In conclusion, my journey from foster care to building futures has been a testament to the transformative power of resilience and determination. As I pursue my degree in Business Management, I am driven by the vision of creating a business that uplifts those who have been overlooked by the system. My experiences, both personal and professional, fuel my commitment to unlocking the potential of individuals who, like me, have faced adversity and are determined to build brighter futures.

Single Mother's Education Scholarship
My father use to say "what is meant to be, will be, and what’s not, just means something else is looking to find its way."Today, I’m choosing to give you my story in a more genuine way so, I thought I would start by introducing myself, my name is Norma Wallace, and I am a 44-year-old freshman at Mass Bay Community College. I am a single mother of three, with a grandchild who is autistic. Which my son has custody of due to no help from the maternal family. I am a first-generation Latina student who was brought up in the foster care system. I was 16 when I left school and worked all my life. I work in the Human Services field helping children with their Mental Health, trauma, and life skills. I decided to get my GED in 2017 after realizing I needed to further my education but then put off going to college due to work. Then the Covid pandemic hit. I continued working through the pandemic as I was an essential worker.
With the shortage in the Human Services field those who were working were getting burned out rapidly, myself included. It was at that time that I realized I needed to return to school to be able to advance in my career or look for another career that would help me better provide for my family. So, I enrolled in the Mass Bay Community College part-time doing three classes. Things were good at the beginning of the semester then work had crisis after crisis. This resulted in me having to miss classes, and assignments, then ended with me withdrawing from classes. I decided that I needed to prioritize work due to it being my only income to provide the roof over our heads. In 2022, I enrolled in school again, Two semesters later and I have a 3.7 GPA and I am working hard to maintain good grades. Although, it’s not as easy as it sounds and find myself up for long hours of the night.
Work-life balance is hard enough without adding the school piece to the scenario. But I find that making time each day to do just a little more helps. The most challenging is how to make sure I have enough time. When people ask me, how do I do it? I simply say “I just don’t think about it” I am only human, so I struggle and have my days. When you are doing well in other areas, something else always falls behind. Trying to balance everything must be the greatest challenge. I feel bad for my children the most, I feel like they get the short end of the stick. I hate that it takes away from their ability to be teenagers like every other kid. Instead of doing sports and hanging out after school with friends.
This scholarship would help me with my plan to obtain my degree, which would allow me to gain a better income and be able to provide my children with a better life. It would also allow me to be home more. With a degree, I would be able to build a small family business one day, put my kid through college, and get my grandson the care he requires. I hope that with me working this hard they wouldn’t have to, or maybe their children wouldn’t have to. I just want to create a life that would allow me to enjoy family and have time to just take in the beauty of life.
