FinalistBio
Hi, my name is Nordin, and I'm pursuing a music performance degree as a college student. I'm enrolled at the prestigious North Carolina A&T State University and proud to be a Blue and Gold Marching Machine member.
Music has been a significant part of my life since childhood. My parents used to share stories of how I would spontaneously start dancing to any music playing in the background. They even gave me the nickname 'happy feet' because of my love for dance and music, especially when Michael Jackson's music was on.
I began playing the trombone, which was my first instrument, during my elementary school years. The musical program at my school offered the opportunity for students to learn any musical instrument they desired, and I was instantly drawn to the trombone. From that point on, I pursued my passion for music throughout my middle and high school years, with the unwavering encouragement of my parents. Additionally, I have also gained some proficiency in playing the piano.
As a college student, I am dedicated to enhancing my skills and mastering various musical instruments to pursue a jazz or classical musician career. My goal is to apply all the knowledge and expertise I have gained so far, gain more experience and continuously create music that brings joy to my audience and myself. I am determined to stay committed and loyal to my passion for music on my instrument and plan to become a better musician.

They can ignite creativity, foster self-expression, promote empathy, and improve cultural understanding. The arts are vital in enriching our communities and shaping our collective identity.
My love for music began at a young age. I remember sitting in front of the TV, watching Michael Jackson's music videos with wonder and amazement. His music captivated me, showing me the transformative power of music and its ability to unite people from all walks of life. My parents nurtured my passion for music, especially my dad, who inspired me to pursue music with dedication and determination. Throughout my journey with music, influential figures like my high school teacher, Mr. Adams, guided and mentored me. His passion for music and dedication to his students instilled in me a love for the art form that motivates me. Despite facing challenges, such as struggling to play the trombone in middle school, the support of my friends and family kept me going.
As a musician and student, I understand the profound impact the arts have had on my life and those around me. Performing with different ensembles or teaching music to others brings me joy and a sense of fulfillment. I am constantly reminded of how the arts can shape our world. The arts have the power to bring people together, to foster understanding and empathy, and to inspire change. They can transform individuals and entire societies. As an advocate for the arts, we have a responsibility to ensure that everyone has access to the transformative power of the arts. We must continue to support the arts in our communities and schools. Unfortunately, despite their proven benefits, the arts are often the first programs to be cut in budget constraints. We need to recognize their importance and ensure they are accessible to everyone.
I am committed to using my passion for music to impact the world positively. Whether performing, teaching, or advocating for the arts in my community, I believe the arts can inspire change, foster empathy, and create a more inclusive society for all. With the support of my friends, family, and mentors, I am confident that I can continue to pursue my dreams and make a meaningful difference through the arts.
In conclusion, the arts significantly impact individuals and entire societies. They can inspire, transform, and connect people from all walks of life. As an advocate for the arts, I am committed to using my passion for music to impact the world positively. Together, we can ensure that everyone can access the transformative power of the arts and create a more inclusive and empathetic society for all.
James B. McCleary Music Scholarship
Music has been an essential part of my life for as long as I can remember. It all began with spontaneous dancing as a child and has since evolved into a profound musical journey. My passion for music was ignited when I learned to play the trombone during elementary school and continued to grow as I progressed through my education. It was not just the trombone that captured my heart; during my high school years, I also delved into learning the piano, adding another layer to my musical expression.
Music has been my constant companion throughout life's ups and downs, providing solace and inspiration in equal measure. Whether grappling with the challenges of academics or navigating the complexities of relationships, music has always offered a moment of respite and reflection. Playing an instrument or immersing myself in a melody allows me to escape the pressures of daily life, providing a sense of calm and clarity that is often hard to find elsewhere.
In addition to playing traditional instruments, I discovered a passion for music production during high school. Experimenting with different genres and rhythms opened up a new world of creativity, allowing me to express myself in ways I had never imagined. Producing music became a form of artistic expression and a means of self-discovery and exploration. But beyond personal growth, I have always envisioned music as a tool for positive change. As a musician, I am responsible for using my talents to uplift others and make a difference in the world. Whether it's through performing at charity events, teaching music to underprivileged youth, or using music as a means of social commentary, I am committed to leveraging my passion for music to create a better world for future generations.
As I continue my journey as a music performance student at North Carolina A&T, I am grateful for the opportunities I've had to connect with others who share my love for music. Whether performing with the Blue and Gold Marching Machine or collaborating with fellow musicians in my jazz ensemble, the sense of camaraderie and shared passion is palpable.
Looking towards the future, my professional aspirations in classical and jazz music burn brighter. I am committed to refining my skills, broadening my musical horizons, and sharing the joy of music with audiences worldwide. With each note I play, whether on the trombone, the piano, or through music production, I am reminded of the transformative power of music and its profound impact on my life. Through my music, I aim to inspire others to discover their passions and strive for positive change in the world.

This requires me to be proactive, organized, and a good communicator. I have learned to motivate my peers, provide constructive feedback, and help them overcome challenges.
Service is another core value guiding my actions on and off the stage. Music is a powerful tool for social change, and I am committed to using my talents to impact my community positively. I have volunteered to perform at charity events, such as benefit concerts for cancer research and fundraising events for local non-profits. These experiences have taught me the importance of giving back to the community and using my talents to make a difference. I have also taught music to underprivileged youth in my community, giving them a creative outlet and a sense of purpose. These experiences taught me the value of service and how it can transform lives.
Empowerment is a principle that resonates deeply with me as a musician and aspiring professional. My journey with music has taught me the transformative power of self-expression and creativity. I strive to empower others to discover their talents and pursue their dreams by teaching, mentoring, and sharing my experiences. Through my work with the University Jazz Ensemble, I have had the opportunity to mentor younger musicians and help them develop their skills. I have also used music as a tool for social commentary, writing songs that address issues such as racism and social inequality. In summary, my passion for music and its ability to uplift others embodies the characteristics of leadership, service, and empowerment. Through my leadership roles in musical ensembles, my commitment to serving my community through music, and my belief in the power of music to empower others, I strive to impact both the musical world and my community positively. Eco-Warrior Scholarship
In an era defined by environmental challenges, the significance of sustainable living cannot be overstated. It's a commitment that resonates deeply with me, not just as an individual but as a collective steward of our planet's well-being. Through deliberate choices, I am working to curtail my carbon footprint, recognizing that each action can impact our environment and positively shape a more sustainable future.
At the core of my sustainable lifestyle lies an unwavering belief in the interconnectedness of all life forms and the delicate balance that sustains our world. This belief is the compass guiding my daily choices, from energy consumption to waste management, each decision echoing through the intricate web of life.
Foremost among these choices is my conscious effort to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. I prioritize eco-friendly modes of transportation like walking, biking, and public transit, actively lessening air pollution and congestion. My home has become a canvas for sustainable practices as I embrace energy-efficient measures such as utilizing LED lighting, powering down appliances when not in use, and maintaining mindful thermostat settings. The cumulative effect of these seemingly small actions translates into significant energy savings and a subsequent reduction in carbon emissions.
My commitment to decreasing meat consumption is another crucial pillar of my sustainable journey. I acknowledge the environmental toll of animal agriculture, encompassing its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. By choosing plant-based meals and reducing meat intake, I am contributing to preserving natural resources and alleviating the stress on our ecosystem.
Moreover, I advocate for reducing, reusing, and recycling. I've embraced minimalism, a lifestyle choice that guides me toward acquiring only what is essential. I opt for products with minimal packaging and sustainable materials when making purchases. Meticulous waste sorting ensures recyclables are diverted from landfills, actively participating in the circular economy and diminishing the environmental strain of waste disposal.
The rationale behind these choices goes beyond personal preference—it is rooted in the urgent call to address climate change and ecological deterioration. Our planet grapples with unprecedented challenges from human activities: global warming, habitat degradation, and resource depletion. By consciously mitigating our carbon footprint, we stand as a bulwark against these forces that threaten the delicate equilibrium of our ecosystems.
Moreover, embracing sustainability is a testament to our commitment to social responsibility. Climate change disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, exacerbating existing inequalities. By reducing our carbon footprint, we contribute to alleviating these disparities, fostering a more equitable and just world.
As individuals, our actions may seem inconsequential in the face of global challenges. Yet, the collective impact of myriad intentional choices is formidable. By embracing sustainable practices, we send a resounding message to industries, governments, and society: the demand for change is unyielding. We advocate for cleaner energy sources, ethical production practices, and policies safeguarding the planet's legacy for future generations.
In summation, sustainable living is not just a lifestyle choice—it's an ethical imperative. My intentional decisions to diminish my carbon footprint stem from an acute awareness of our shared interconnectedness and a dedication to safeguarding the Earth for current and future generations. From energy-conscious choices to dietary adjustments and responsible waste management, these actions contribute to a more sustainable world. The urgency of the environmental crisis necessitates our participation in its amelioration; through collective efforts, we can forge a future where the vitality and splendor of Earth endure for generations to come.

Dr. Alexanderia K. Lane Memorial Scholarship
Assisting others is pivotal in constructing a more enlightened world, and its significance extends well beyond the initial act of benevolence. When we open a helping hand to those in need, we set in motion a far-reaching cascade of positive influence that reverberates throughout the intricate tapestry of our interconnected society.
To begin with, helping others fosters an invaluable sense of unity and empathy within communities. It serves as a poignant reminder that, despite our disparities, we are all irrevocably linked by our shared human experiences, challenges, and aspirations. By willingly offering our support, we alleviate immediate adversities and nurture a profound sense of togetherness that transcends the boundaries of diversity. This unity, in turn, fortifies the bonds that tie us together, facilitates mutual understanding, and facilitates an environment of collaborative coexistence – thus engendering a more harmonious and all-embracing societal fabric.
In addition, the principle of assisting others bears a distinctly reciprocal character. When we aid those in need, we not only enhance their well-being and personal growth but also trigger a virtuous cycle of positivity. The recipient of our generosity is often inspired to emulate such kindness, resulting in an ongoing chain reaction of goodwill. This chain of events, stemming from that initial act of benevolence, invariably initiates a domino effect of positive occurrences, culminating in the gradual transformation of our world into a bastion of compassion and support.
Furthermore, lending a hand nurtures a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose within our own lives. Our engagement in acts of altruism and assistance activates a deeply resonant satisfaction, harmonizing with our innate yearning to contribute to causes more significant than ourselves. This sense of fulfillment is not confined to a fleeting instant; instead, it reverberates through time, endowing us with enduring benefits for our mental and emotional well-being. The positivity and sense of accomplishment derived from helping others forge a resilient feedback loop consistently bolster our quality of life.
In essence, assisting others is an incendiary spark that ignites a more interconnected, compassionate, and prosperous world. By ushering in a cycle of benevolent influence, we set forth a sequence of kindhearted actions that reverberate across society's vast expanse, stirring others to embrace the spirit of pay-it-forward. As each individual becomes an essential link in this unending chain, the cumulative impact cascades, ultimately forging a world in which empathy, communal support, and collaborative endeavor steer progress and transformative change. Thus, aiding others emerges as a moral imperative and an influential instrument for deliberately crafting a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

Your Health Journey Scholarship
As a sophomore in college at North Carolina A&T, my life took an exciting turn when I decided to join the Blue and Gold Marching Machine (BGMM). Little did I know that this decision would not only ignite my passion for music but also inspire me to embark on a journey toward a healthier lifestyle.
Before joining BGMM, I had always been interested in music, and playing the trombone had been a cherished hobby since high school. However, my passion for music had been somewhat overshadowed by a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits during my first year of college. I knew something needed to change, and joining the marching band proved to be the catalyst for my transformation.
The first time I stepped onto the field with BGMM, I was struck by the camaraderie and energy that filled the air. Being surrounded by like-minded individuals who were passionate about music and committed to leading healthy lives inspired me to make changes in my own life. The rigorous practices, long rehearsals, and challenging routines demanded physical stamina and mental focus.
I realized that I needed to be in peak physical condition to excel in BGMM, so I started incorporating regular exercise into my routine. Marching band practice became my daily workout, and I also began hitting the gym on off days to improve my endurance and strengthen my muscles. Not only did this boost my physical fitness, but it also improved my mental clarity and overall well-being.
One of the most significant changes I made was to my eating habits. In the past, I would often indulge in fast food and unhealthy snacks without much thought. However, being a part of BGMM taught me the importance of fueling my body with nutritious foods to perform at my best. I started to pay more attention to what I ate, making conscious choices to include fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins in my meals. I also learned to moderate my portions and avoid excessive sugary or processed foods.
As I immersed myself in the BGMM culture, I noticed that many of my fellow band members were mindful of their diets and actively shared tips for healthy eating. We began having "health and fitness" discussions, exchanging recipes, and motivating each other to make healthier choices. This sense of community support reinforced my commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle.
Joining BGMM sparked my passion for music and transformed my overall approach to health and wellness. The band became my family, and we motivated each other to prioritize self-care and maintain a balanced lifestyle amidst the demanding college environment.
Looking back on my health journey, I can proudly say that BGMM has played an instrumental role in shaping the healthier version of myself. As a sophomore in college, I am more energetic, focused, and confident than ever before. Through the Blue and Gold Marching Machine, I found my rhythm in music and led a healthier and more fulfilling life. I am grateful for the life-changing experience and the lifelong friendships forged in this exceptional marching band. With my trombone in hand and a commitment to health in my heart, I am excited to continue this growth journey, both as a musician and a healthier individual.

As a college musician, Disney's music inspires me to strive for excellence in my craft. I learn from the seamless integration of music and storytelling in Disney films, understanding the importance of selecting the correct musical phrases and orchestrations to complement a narrative. It motivates me to hone my composer, arranger, and performer skills to capture the essence of emotions through my compositions and performances.
Furthermore, Disney's music scoring exemplifies the beauty of collaboration. The scores result from the combined efforts of talented composers, lyricists, orchestrators, and musicians who work together to create a harmonious masterpiece. This collaboration teaches me the value of teamwork and the significance of embracing diverse perspectives to create music that resonates with audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
In conclusion, Disney's music scoring and the emotion it brings to their films hold a special place in my heart as a college musician. The music's ability to transport me to magical worlds, evoke deep emotions, and inspire my musical journey is a testament to its artistry and impact. Through the power of music, I aim to bring joy, solace, and a shared sense of humanity to people across the globe, leaving behind a legacy that resonates long after the final note has been played.
Godi Arts Scholarship
Growing up, music has always held a special place in my heart. Thanks to my dad, a DJ and audio technician, I was exposed to various musical genres from a young age. My family's musical abilities further fueled my passion. I still vividly recall attending church with my relatives as they played guitar, bass, drums, and piano and feeling the raw power and beauty of the music. One artist, in particular, profoundly impacted me – the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I was mesmerized by his music, learned his dance routines, and was intrigued by his persona. He inspired me to pursue my love for music with relentless determination.
I started playing the trombone in elementary school, and although the slide was quite challenging at first, I persevered and eventually became quite skilled. Surprisingly, I discovered in middle school that many of my peers had yet to learn an instrument, and I was ahead of most of the students in music since I started early on with my instrument.
In high school, I had to work even harder to catch up for some of the time I'd lost in middle school, but my daily practice paid off in the end. I became one of the top performers in my school's music program, and my dedication earned me a scholarship to study music performance in college.
Now that I'm in college, I spend even more time practicing and working on my music. I'm fully committed to honing my craft and growing as a musician. I attend master classes and workshops and seek mentorship from experienced musicians in my college. I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn from some truly talented individuals and to be surrounded by like-minded peers who share my passion for music.
My ultimate goal is to become a professional jazz or classical music performer. I aspire to join a local group and play my instrument in large orchestras, wind ensembles, or smaller ensembles like jazz bands. I'm confident that with hard work and dedication, I'll be able to achieve this goal.

Theresa Lord Future Leader Scholarship
Music has always been a fundamental part of my life. From a young age, I remember dancing to any music playing or learning to play my piano whenever I heard a song I liked. I began my musical education in elementary school and have continued to learn and grow as a musician throughout college. While my journey with music has not been without its challenges, I have persevered and learned valuable lessons.
One significant obstacle I have overcome is the need to relearn the basics. I discovered I had a natural talent for the trombone in elementary school. I progressed quickly and was ahead of most of my peers in my middle school band. However, my lack of consistent practice led to issues with articulation or using the tongue to articulate notes on the trombone. I initially learned to articulate using my lips instead of my tongue, which worked fine for more extended notes but became a hindrance when I had to play short notes in high school. As a result, I spent my first two years of high school relearning how to articulate appropriately on the trombone. It was a frustrating process, but I didn't give up. I knew that to succeed as a musician. I had to do the work and be patient.
Another significant challenge was deciding whether to continue my musical journey in college and beyond. The music industry can be tough to break into, and I heard from peers and teachers about the difficulties of succeeding in the business. This caused me a lot of stress and uncertainty during my last two high school years. I was torn between my love of music and the practical concerns of making a living in the industry. I ultimately decided to pursue music in college after considering why I played the trombone and how long music had been a part of my life. Music is a part of who I am, and I couldn't imagine my life without it.
As a first-year college student majoring in music performance, I am happy with my decision to continue my musical journey. I have encountered and overcome many hurdles, which have helped me grow as a musician. As a result, I have become more confident in my playing and have developed a deeper understanding of music theory. I am still exploring my options for life after college, but I have made significant progress with my trombone playing and am also considering a career in audio engineering. I know that the path ahead will not be easy, but I am determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way.
I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and teachers, who have encouraged me to follow my passions and believe in myself. With hard work and dedication, I can achieve my dreams and make a meaningful contribution to the music world. I am excited to see where my love of music takes me in the future.

I'm a learning musician and this is my last year in high school. As a musician, I have gone through hardships and many instances of trial and error. There have been many times when I was very close to quitting music and never playing my instrument again. But every time I fell I had others there to pick me back up. There are many hardships that had to pass in order to continue being a musician. One of the many setbacks I had to get across was the fear of failure.
Our county holds this something called all-county band, which students audition for to be placed within the band. In my first year of middle school, I had to audition for the all-county band. It was my first year so was very anxious and nervous. As the audition for the band came close, I eventually fell under pressure and said to my parents that I wasn't going to audition and I didn't want to do music anymore. Soon after that instance, most of my siblings came back home and gave me a talk to pick me back up. Their word brought me inspiration, hope, and confidence for myself. After that, I continued to practice for the audition and eventually did it. To my surprise, I actually made it into the all-county band, even though I was the last chair. This one instance change my life and help not only continue with music but get over other barriers as well.
My family has many successful people who often come back and give back to the community that raised them. In the future, I hope I can give back just as much as my family, friends, and community has given to me. I hope that when I become a good enough musician, I can come back and play for my community and give them what my family gave me, inspiration, hope, and confidence.

Social injustice movement fight to protect everyone's freedom and improve life overall. There is probably a lot of movement that effect me and I don't even know it. But there is some movement that I can easily see myself being effect by.
A social injustice moment that has improved my community is gun violence. Not too long ago there was a shooting at a church in South Carolina. This caused much pain and suffering to many family individuals. But South Carolina bounced back and put in place heavier gun laws and it also put South Carolina on high alert for future shootings.
This has affected me because, in schools, they have learned from this and other instances of what to do if a gun threat is in place. For example, over the recent years, many gun threats and shooting attempts have been halted due to school security and awareness being improved. The Gun Violence movement has made my school, county, and state a safer place to live.
