"Your Success" Youssef Scholarship
On December 26, 2020, I was in an active shooter situation while serving with a non-profit called Union Gospel Mission in Portland. In the moment there was no fear; just adrenaline. We got out of there as fast as we could but when I got home I crumbled. The frustration wasn't that I could've died, but that I couldn't do anything about it. I felt so helpless. I don't want to feel that way again.
I want to go into some sort of law enforcement or social work after college, so college is the time I hope to gain as much experience and perspective as I can.
I want to learn how to talk with people in crisis and de-escalate situations. I want to as prepared physically and mentally as I can so that I have the best chance of getting the job so that I can be the one out there helping, so that others can sleep at night and never have to feel what I felt.
The major I'm going for is a special one called Forensic Psychology. It's a mixture of criminal justice and psychology. The course is taught by an ex-FBI agent which I'm excited about. If I can I also want to major in Non-profit leadership. I don't know if I care where I end up as long as I'm helping people and have a roof over my head.
Right now I participate in drama and theatre. I'm actually part of an improv group at my school. I'm also in choir.
I play a lot of villains if you can believe it. I'd have to admit it's very fun and people told me I'm pretty good at it.
I'm passionate about volunteering. I haven't been able to do it as much as I've liked, but I sort of bounce around to one organization to the next helping wherever I'm needed. My goal is to be doing some sort of project once a week. I want to learn of sorts of skills; become a jack-of-all trades so I can help wherever I'm needed.
So far I've gotten some experience with carpentry, first aid, and professional cleaning.
I'm also passionate about my work. I work as a custodian at my church working primarily on the school that meets in our building. I've gotten to become really good friends with the teachers there and have a connection with the kids there too. They write messages to me on the whiteboard and I reply and leave them doodles.
