Star Farm Scholarship for LGBTQ+ Students
Ever since I realized I was nonbinary I had did my best to honor who I was without ever apologizing for being me. I soon realized being authentic was a lot easier said than done. I had changed my name, my pronouns, my style, but the people who I once thought were on my side began to drift farther and farther away. During this time I struggled a lot with my mental health and my self confidence but I found solace and belonging with other LGBTQ+ students and family members who kept me grounded and reminded me of the beauty of community and support. Those people are the reason why I am writing this essay right now. I strive to pursue a fulfilling career in mental health focused Social Work so I can help people in need such as LGBTQ+ folks, minorities, neurodivergent people and people with disabilities, etc because they are the people who need to most help and care in our society.
I come from a humble background, my parents immigrated to America in 2001 from Nepal at the age of 28 and 29 to create a better future for my brother, my sister and I. I currently live with my mother, grandma, uncle, father, and sister who are all financially supported solely by my hardworking father. He manages a self-made small local business called 'Sherpa Painting and Carpentry Inc' and works seven days a week to provide me and my sister of an education.
I want to be able to pursue my dreams of higher education and social work because I believe I can make a difference. I want to make a difference. Though I am young and still have much to experience, I see the pain and suffering that is endured in our world, I have also faced some of that pain in my life. If I could guide someone through that time of uncertainty as I was guided it would mean the world for me to be that catalyst of change in someone's life. I don't want to sit idly behind, I want to take action which is why I have decided to attend the University at Buffalo and pursue a MSW so I can fulfill my dreams, but in order to do so I would need to be financially supported to the fullest for six years.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help me on my path to higher education, but make my dreams a reality instead of a mere hope.
