Bio

My name is Nikhil Johnson, a freshman honors student at the University of Arizona who has slowly but surely been working to grow the STEM initiative among my peers. To make my impact as a youngster, I was able to dip my feet into the Chief Science Officer program 6 years ago. The concept of student voice is so important to kindle because it's a new perspective that you can never really reach if you are an adult. Being a kid is a notion that you only find when you are a kid, and it is constantly and inconsistently changing. As a high schooler, I want to make local changes that have global impacts. In the future, I want to become a doctor, but branch my work into student voice and my community to the STEM workforce. I hope that by embracing the failures of my current attempts, I can continue to introduce new impactful projects across technology, the environment, and career exploration for the students of my generation.

Growing up, my life was like a cricket ball. I was from India, very unpopular in America, and thrown around to places I had never been! Being an immigrant, it was difficult to get accustomed to the new traditions of life; however, the support of my parents, friends, and peers helped me realize that my academic and personal success was purely a result of my community. I realized the vitality of giving back to underserved communities and youth who may have been in a similar situation as me. To achieve this goal, I took on the position of Chief Science Officer, a stem ambassador at my school where I can make a unique and outstanding change to my school and community. Since it can be a lot of work to reach out to children, it often goes unnoticed, and that's why so many decisions for children are done by adults. Being a CSO, I have been able to encourage students and adults to spread and implement each other’s ideas. Using my voice, I have been able to pioneer many events and festivals that have provided a diverse pipeline of STEM careers to young children. I have started environmental initiatives that place children at the forefront of community impact through art installations, school waste reduction projects, and park cleanups. My favorite project was providing over 100 Chromebooks to students across my community in partnership with Iron Mountain Data Center! These opportunities have made me realize how determined my community is and the impact that children hold. In the end, my life has still been a cricket ball and this time it’s a positive; I’ve thrown myself into pioneering great opportunities in the hopes that my community and I can make it to the next base.
