Future Leaders Scholarship
During my professional journey as a comprehensive behavioral intervention special education teacher, I demonstrated exceptional leadership skills by addressing a critical need within our school district. While my primary role was focused on special education, my passion for mental health drove me to identify a significant gap in our approach to supporting students who live in our urban city and face higher rates of trauma.
Recognizing the high incidence of trauma among our students and the challenges our staff faced in managing related behaviors, I felt compelled to act. I believe that fostering empathy among our educators could be an effective solution. To address this, I proposed a presentation to the administration on the importance and application of empathy in supporting traumatized students.
Preparing for the presentation involved thorough research and careful planning. I focused on demonstrating how empathy could be used as an effective tool to connect with and support these students, detailing both the theoretical underpinnings and practical strategies. I also highlighted the positive outcomes that empathy-based approaches could achieve, both in terms of student behavior and overall school climate.
Delivering the presentation was a pivotal moment. I communicated not only the why but also the how of using empathy, providing actionable steps that staff could implement immediately. Furthermore, I educated the staff about what goes on in the brain when one is empathized with. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many staff members reached out to me afterward, sharing their success stories and expressing gratitude for the new perspective and tools they had gained. They had stories of building relationships and de-escalating situations quicker than previous attempts with other resources. Which were some of the outcomes I was hoping to see.
This experience reinforced my belief in the power of empathy and education. It also solidified my commitment to using my leadership skills to drive positive change. To stand up and speak on something you believe in. In my future career, I plan to leverage these skills to deliver presentations and workshops to broader communities, including at conferences. My goal is to disseminate accurate information, combat stigmatization, and address the spread of misinformation about mental health.
By applying these leadership skills, I aim to foster a more informed and empathetic society, where mental health challenges are understood and addressed with compassion and effectiveness. This approach will not only support individuals directly affected by trauma but also create a ripple effect of understanding and support throughout the community.

Education has been a transformative force in my life, guiding me towards healing and giving me a clear path forward. My decision to enter the mental health field stems from the adversities I have experienced, particularly the PTSD and complex trauma symptoms resulting from my childhood. Seeking answers and understanding through education has not only provided me with personal clarity but also ignited a passion for helping others who face similar challenges.
Studying psychology and mental health has provided me with a deep understanding of the complexities of trauma and equipped me with effective tools for addressing it. Upon completing my graduate program, I will pursue further certifications, enhancing my expertise and abilities to help society. This knowledge has shaped my goals and aspirations, allowing me to envision a future where I can make a significant impact on individual lives and society.
One of my primary goals is to open a private practice specializing in treating trauma victims. By providing a safe and supportive environment, I aim to help individuals navigate their healing journeys and reclaim their lives. Furthermore, another way I plan to aid trauma victims is to create services for the most dangerous offenders. These services will offer hope for rehabilitation and create a safer society. My education will equip me with the skills and insights needed to offer effective, empathetic, and multicultural care tailored to each client's unique experiences.
Beyond individual therapy, I am committed to mental health education and advocacy. I plan to provide mental health education to communities through presentations and conferences. By sharing my knowledge and experiences, I hope to raise awareness about trauma, its effects, and the importance of mental health care. Education is a powerful tool for breaking down misconceptions and fostering a more informed and compassionate society.
Advocacy for policy change is another critical aspect of my future plans. I intend to work towards improving mental health policies, ensuring better access to care, and enhancing the quality of services available. Fighting to end the stigmatization and misinformation surrounding mental health is a key part of this effort. By promoting accurate information and fostering open conversations, I believe we can create a more accepting and supportive environment for those affected by mental health issues.
Overall, education has profoundly changed my path forward, providing me with the knowledge and passion to pursue a career in mental health. It has given me the tools to help trauma victims, educate communities, and advocate for meaningful policy changes. Through these efforts, I aim to give back to society by contributing to a more understanding, informed, and compassionate world.
Zamora Borose Goodwill Scholarship
As someone who has experienced significant mental health challenges, my goals are both personal and professional, deeply rooted in my own journey and desire to make a meaningful impact in the field of mental health. Mental health challenges are often brought with discrimination and lack of opportunity. However, with perseverance, resilience, and support from professionals, I have been able to overcome these hardships. Due to this, it is my goal to give back by lifting others who suffer from mental health issues and find it difficult to move on in life due to their challenges.
First and foremost, my primary goal is to become a licensed mental health professional. Achieving this licensure will equip me with the necessary skills and credentials to provide effective and empathetic care to those in need. With this foundation, I plan to open my own private practice, where I will specialize in treating trauma victims using a multicultural approach and staying up to date on diverse practices. Recognizing the diverse backgrounds and experiences of my clients, I aim to offer tailored, culturally sensitive care that acknowledges and respects their unique perspectives.
In addition to individual therapy, I am committed to developing services for higher-level offenders. This initiative stems from a belief in the potential for rehabilitation and the importance of addressing the mental health needs of all individuals, including those who have committed serious offenses. By providing targeted support and intervention, I hope to reduce the likelihood of reoffending and contribute to creating a safer society.
Beyond my practice, I aspire to become a leader in the mental health industry. This involves not only excelling in clinical practice but also advocating for broader systemic changes. I am passionate about promoting mental health services, pushing for policy changes that improve access and quality of care, and working to destigmatize mental health issues. By raising awareness and fostering a more accepting and informed public attitude towards mental health, I believe we can create a more supportive environment for everyone.
My career path is centered on becoming a licensed mental health professional, establishing a private practice focused on trauma victims, and developing services for higher-level offenders. My broader goals include leadership in the mental health field, advocacy for policy changes, providing public education, and efforts to destigmatize mental health issues. These aspirations are driven by my personal experiences and a profound commitment to helping others navigate their mental health challenges and achieve healing and resilience.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Choosing a career in the mental health field is a deeply personal and purposeful decision for me, shaped by the adversities I have faced throughout my life. Having survived abuse, neglect, and many unspeakable hardships, my journey has been fraught with challenges, including severe PTSD and complex trauma symptoms. These experiences have profoundly impacted me, but with the unwavering support of mental health professionals, I have been able to navigate and overcome these obstacles.
The most pivotal moment in my healing journey came when I confronted my past by testifying against my father in a federal level trial for the abuse he inflicted on my sister. This act, while retraumatizing, was a significant step towards closure. It allowed me to address years of abuse and neglect, even as I grappled with the grief of seeing my father sentenced to 30 years in prison. This experience solidified my resolve to help others who have endured similar traumas.
My goal is to give back to those who have suffered through adversities and to support them in managing the side effects of their trauma. I am committed to opening a private practice specializing in treating trauma victims. Through this practice, I aim to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to heal and reclaim their lives. My personal experiences have given me a unique understanding and empathy that I believe will be instrumental in connecting with and aiding my clients.
Beyond individual therapy, I am passionate about advocating for broader mental health policy changes. I recognize the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and promoting awareness and acceptance within society. My advocacy will focus on creating and supporting policies that enhance mental health services and make them more accessible to those in need.
Additionally, I am dedicated to addressing the needs of higher-level offenders, a group often overlooked in mental health discussions. By developing specialized services for these individuals, my aim is to reduce the potential for future harm and provide a path towards rehabilitation and healing. This holistic approach not only aids the offenders but also serves to protect potential victims, creating a safer and more understanding community.
My choice to enter the mental health field is driven by a deep-seated desire to transform my personal pain into a source of healing for others. The adversities I have faced and overcome have equipped me with resilience, empathy, and a profound commitment to supporting those affected by trauma. Through my private practice and advocacy efforts, I aspire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals and the broader community, fostering a more compassionate and supportive environment for all.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I did not always love math. In fact, my journey to appreciating and loving math began by sheer chance when I became a math teacher in a special education classroom. Initially, I faced the challenge of teaching a subject that I wasn't particularly passionate about. Determined to succeed, I decided to dive into understanding math better and put my best effort into teaching it effectively.
As I began teaching, I noticed something remarkable. Math wasn’t just about numbers and equations; it was a powerful tool for enhancing logic and problem-solving abilities. The more I taught, the more I observed how math required students to think critically, approach problems methodically, and develop logical reasoning skills. These skills are not only crucial for academic success but are also essential life skills.
Furthermore, I discovered that math could significantly aid in emotional regulation. Engaging with math problems forces one to be mindful and present, as solving them requires concentration and focus. This mindfulness aspect of doing math can help calm the mind and improve emotional stability. It is practical experience in emotional regulation. Realizing this, I started to see math as more than just an academic subject—it became a psychological tool that could enhance mental well-being.
Curious about these effects, I delved into research on how learning math impacts the brain. I found fascinating studies showing that engaging with math can stimulate neural pathways associated with logical reasoning and cognitive function. This research solidified my appreciation for math, as I understood that it could foster mental growth and resilience.
My experience with teaching math transformed my perception of the subject. I came to love math for its ability to develop critical thinking and emotional regulation. It opened my mind to the broader applications of math beyond the classroom, seeing it as a valuable tool for personal and intellectual growth.
Overall, my love for math blossomed from my teaching experiences and the profound impact I observed it having on my students and myself. Math enhances logic, problem-solving, and emotional regulation, and its benefits extend far beyond academics. This journey has not only made me a better teacher but also an advocate for the importance of math in everyday life and in the classroom.
Book Lovers Scholarship
In a world of diverse cultures and beliefs, finding a universal common ground is challenging. One book I would recommend for everyone would be Lois Lowry’s “The giver”. This book challenges perspectives on diverse societies while exploring individuality, memory, and the courage to defy conformity to uphold righteousness.
"The Giver" is a dystopian society where pain and suffering are eliminated at the cost of individuality. Citizens live under strict rules that suppress emotions. Jonas, chosen as the Receiver of Memory, trains with The Giver, experiencing the entirety of human emotion, from love to pain. This journey prompts readers to question the price of societal harmony, showing the dangers of a conformist society removing individualism for peace and order. This theme is relevant today, where the balance between individual rights and societal expectations is a constant debate.
"The Giver" emphasizes the importance of memory and history in shaping our identities and societies. In the book, memories are held by The Receiver, who bears the collective past to shield the community from pain. This highlights the significance of learning from history to avoid repeating mistakes. In a global context, where history often seems forgotten or rewritten, "The Giver" reminds us to learn from our past.
Another critical aspect of "The Giver" is its exploration of individuality and the courage to go against conformity. Jonas’s journey is a powerful narrative of discovery and moral courage. As he becomes aware of the lies of his society, Jonas decides to take a stand, despite possible consequences. This act of defiance encourages readers to question unethical societal norms and to stand up for their beliefs. In a world where conformity feels safer, "The Giver" inspires individuals to value and express their perspectives courageously.
Each reading of "The Giver" gives new meanings. Its layered narrative and complex themes allow for many interpretations, making it a book that grows with the reader. As individuals experience different life stages, their understanding and appreciation of the novel evolve, offering new insights. This timeless quality makes "The Giver" a lifelong companion for continuous reflection and growth.
If everyone in the world should read one book, it would be "The Giver." Its exploration of societal structure, individuality, memory, and moral courage resonates universally. By opening minds and encouraging critical thinking about our societies and values, "The Giver" inspires change and fosters a deeper understanding of what it means to be human.

My personal journey has been a chaotic one, shaped by profound challenges, but also marked by resilience, determination, and a commitment to giving back. From enduring childhood abuse to grappling with severe mental health struggles, each hurdle has tested my strength and resolve. However, through unwavering determination and a belief in the possibility of recovery, I have navigated through the darkest of times and emerged with newfound resilience.
Growing up in an environment damaged by severe childhood abuse, I eventually came to understand the devastating effects it had on my emotional well-being. The trauma I endured manifested in many mental health struggles, including PTSD and complex trauma symptoms. Each day was a battle against my past, making even the simplest of tasks feel incredibly overwhelming. My mental health struggles created challenges with my relationships, work and education. To the point, I had to reach out for professional help and begin trauma therapy.
In the most recent years, the moment in my journey came when I made the decision to take a stand against my father in a federal court trial. Confronting him and seeking justice for the abuse inflicted upon my sister, which was an emotionally overwhelming experience. Yet, it was a necessary step towards closure and healing, despite the emotional turmoil it caused. It was the turning point of my life, giving an end to years of trauma and mental health symptoms.
Throughout my recovery journey, resilience has been my guiding light. Despite the overwhelming challenges I faced, I refused to succumb to despair. Instead, I tapped into my inner strength, pushing through each obstacle with persistent determination. By confronting my past, tapping into my inner strength, and finding purpose in helping others, I have navigated through the darkest of times and emerged with newfound resilience and hope for the future.

As a non-traditional college student, my educational experience has been profoundly shaped by the need to balance motherhood, full-time work, and my studies. Unlike many of my peers who entered college directly after high school, I embarked on my academic journey later in life, having first spent time in the workforce. This unconventional path has presented both unique challenges and invaluable opportunities, significantly influencing my educational journey and shaping my future goals.
Starting my career before enrolling in college was a pivotal decision. Working in various roles allowed me to explore different fields and ultimately discover my passion for mental health and trauma therapy. This practical experience provided clarity and direction, ensuring that when I did return to school, I was committed and driven by a clear sense of purpose. I was not merely seeking a degree; I was pursuing a calling that aligned with my personal experiences and professional aspirations.
Balancing motherhood, full-time work, and my studies has undoubtedly been challenging. The responsibilities of raising a child, managing a household, and fulfilling professional duties required careful time management and prioritization. This balancing act has limited my options for schools and programs, necessitating choices that accommodate my complex schedule. As a result, I often had to slow down my academic progress, attending school part-time or three-quarters time to ensure I could meet all my commitments.
My journey has also been marked by significant personal challenges. Growing up in an environment of childhood abuse instilled in me a deep resilience and determination to overcome adversity. This resilience was further tested when I gained custody of my sister while pursuing my bachelor's degree, followed by a federal level trial against our father amid my graduate degree. Balancing these personal responsibilities with my educational goals has been an immense challenge, but it has also strengthened my resolve and commitment to my studies and future career.
These experiences have profoundly influenced my future goals. My background and the challenges I have faced have led me to a deep interest in trauma therapy and advocacy. I aspire to become a mental health professional specializing in trauma care, where I can use my personal experiences to help others navigate their healing journeys. Furthermore, I am passionate about advocating for mental health awareness and support, aiming to create a more compassionate and understanding society.
Being a non-traditional student has also contributed to significant personal growth. The necessity of balancing multiple roles has honed my time management skills, resilience, and adaptability. Each day presents new challenges, but it also offers opportunities for growth and learning. My experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance and the value of pursuing one's passion, no matter the obstacles.
Overall, being a non-traditional college student has deeply impacted my educational experience and future goals. While balancing motherhood, full-time work, and studies has been demanding, it has also been incredibly rewarding. My journey has reinforced my commitment to my field of study, driven by personal experiences and a passion for trauma therapy and advocacy. As I continue to navigate this path, I am determined to use my education and experiences to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, demonstrating that resilience and dedication can overcome any challenge.

I am a mother committed to breaking generational curses and dedicated to creating a better future for my family and community. My name is Nikeisha McCone, my journey has been shaped by profound experiences with mental illness, both personally and within my family, and these challenges have significantly influenced my path and my purpose. I grew up enduring a substantial amount of childhood abuse, leaving me to cope with complex trauma symptoms, and PTSD. However, the challenges I have faced shaped me into the person I am today and have led me to the path of becoming a mental health counselor. With goals of bringing mental health education and care to my community through public speaking, advocacy, and creating a private therapy practice.
The trauma I experienced resulted in a diagnosis of PTSD and complex trauma, conditions that have made daily life, academic pursuits, and relationships particularly challenging. Symptoms such as flashbacks, anxiety, and emotional dysregulation often disrupted my ability to focus on schoolwork and maintain healthy relationships. However, my journey through these difficulties has been marked by resilience, faith, and unwavering support from mental health professionals. Therapy and counseling have been essential in helping me develop coping strategies and regain control over my life.
However, I am not the only person in my life who has suffered from severe mental health issues. My sister endured severe trauma at the hands of our father. Upon discovering the abuse, she was suffering; I fought for legal custody of her to provide a safe and nurturing environment. This period was incredibly challenging, as I had to balance the responsibilities of guardianship with the emotional turmoil of our circumstances. Our situation culminated in a federal-level trial against our father, where we took the stand to seek justice for his actions. This ordeal was a significant test of our strength and resilience, demanding an immense emotional toll but ultimately leading to a sense of closure and justice.
Despite the challenges, I have channeled my experiences into my career as a special education teacher. In my role, I work with students who have behavioral and emotional needs, using my personal insights to connect with them on a deeper level. My own experiences with trauma have endowed me with a unique perspective, allowing me to approach my students with empathy, patience, and understanding. I strive to create a safe and supportive learning environment where they feel valued and understood.
Resilience has been a cornerstone of my journey. Each day, I am reminded of the strength it takes to move forward despite the weight of past traumas. My faith has also been a crucial source of comfort and guidance, helping me find meaning and hope even in the darkest times. Moreover, the support of mental health professionals and my immediate family has been invaluable. Their expertise and compassion have helped me navigate my mental health challenges, equipping me with the tools needed to manage my symptoms and live a fulfilling life.
My journey through mental illness and trauma has been fraught with challenges, but it has also been a path of growth, resilience, and advocacy. As a mother and special education teacher, I am dedicated to breaking generational curses and fostering a supportive environment for those around me. Through faith, professional support, family, and a commitment to mental health advocacy, I strive to make a positive impact, demonstrating that recovery and resilience are possible for everyone.

However, instead of falling to despair, I chose to stand tall and take charge of my circumstances.
One of the most significant adversities I faced was the burden of severe childhood abuse. This experience not only left me emotionally wounded but also forced me to assume responsibilities far beyond my years. I was left to fend for myself since my early teens and left home before becoming an adult. All the while, ensuring I took paths which ended the generational abuse which I had suffered my entire childhood.

However, instead of allowing my struggles to define me, I sought help and embarked on a journey of healing and self-discovery. Counseling, therapy, and a strong support network became pillars of strength as I navigated the complexities of my mental health journey.
Despite the adversities I faced, I made the decision to return to school with a sense of purpose and determination. Education became a beacon of hope, offering me the opportunity to channel my experiences into meaningful action. Returning to school was not just about acquiring knowledge; it was about empowering myself to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, particularly in the field of mental health.

The stress of academic demands combined with the lingering effects of past trauma requires resilience and determination to overcome. Moreover, my sister’s abuse by our father added another layer of emotional complexity to my life. One significant way I advocate for mental health is through educational presentations aimed at raising awareness and fostering empathy among educators and students. For instance, I delivered a presentation on how to use empathy to aid traumatized students. By educating others about the signs of trauma and effective empathetic responses, I strive to create a more supportive and inclusive school environment where all students feel safe and understood.
