Welcome to my profile!
My name is Nicole Sanz and I am a first-generation Cuban-American striving to graduate with a bachelor's in psychology and pursue a medical career soon after.
Before going back to school, I took a 2-and-a-half-year gap year to decide whether or not college was for me. During this gap year, I had the privilege to gain new experiences working as an optometrist technician, working alongside optometrists. I was able to catch a glimpse of the medical field and work with patients ranging in age and the medical care they needed. With this new profound growth that this opportunity gave me, I decided I wanted to go back to school.
I had the privilege of studying abroad at an Italian university during my freshman year last year. I was able to experience a new culture compared to my own and the culture I assimilated growing up. My freshman year was dedicated to creating a routine for myself while attending school as a full-time student and being across the world, far from home. After coming back home during Christmas break, I was too homesick to go back and transfer to my local community college. This decision eased the financial stress and burden it was causing for my parents and myself.
After being home for the past year, I currently work as a vision therapist assistant, which has been aiding my counseling, medical, and communication skills for the future.

Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
My favorite aspect of Minecraft is not a particular in-game activity, but rather the unique ability of this gam has across different generations. Minecraft has provided me a form of connection with younger patients, making it more than just a game. It is a world where young children and adults alike can explore, create, and interact, fostering a sense of camaraderie that's truly extraordinary. As I moved into my career as a vision therapist assistant, I realized that this game, which had once been a source of entertainment for me when I was a child, could now serve as a bridge to connect with my younger patients.
Many of the children I work with struggle with various vision-related challenges. However, when I being to talk about Minecraft during our sessions, it was as if I had uncovered a hidden key to their hearts. Their eyes would light up, and suddenly, our sessions became less about therapy and more about shared adventures and hacks in the world of Minecraft. The power of Minecraft as a therapeutic tool is truly remarkable. Through the game, I can engage with my young patients on a level that is comfortable and familiar to them and boosts their self-confidence in the therapy room. In addition to providing a therapeutic tool, Minecraft has taught me a broader lesson about the power of shared interests in building connections. The enthusiasm and joy my patients express when discussing Minecraft have taught me the importance of meeting people where their passions lie. This insight has become a valuable part of my professional approach, helping me connect with patients.
Because of this, my favorite aspect of Minecraft is not a specific in-game activity but rather the game's unique ability to bring people together, regardless of age. It serves as a bridge, connecting me with my younger patients in the world of vision therapy. Through Minecraft, I've witnessed the transformation of therapy sessions into shared adventures, igniting a passion for improvement in my patients. This game has shown me that shared interests have the power to build connections, inspire creativity, and encourage personal growth. Minecraft is more than just a game; it's a tool for communication, understanding, and empowerment for all ages, no matter the generation.
Girls Ready to Empower Girls
In the tapestry of our lives, there are individuals who weave themselves into the very fabric of our existence. Unseen heroes, inspire us and provide the unwavering support that shapes our educational and personal journeys. For me, one such remarkable woman is my best friend, who has been my companion on my path to personal and academic growth. Our friendship began in high school, a time when both of us were wrestling with the complexities of adolescence and navigating the trenches of high school. Our connection was an unexpected one. We were brought together by our shared love for the beach, a sanctuary where we could escape the turmoil of our teenage years. Although we didn't share classes and rarely crossed paths and seen each other in school, it was through social media that our friendship found its roots. A simple friend request on Facebook led to a conversation that would change my life for the better. Our initial discussions about the beach soon expanded to encompass a wide range of interests and shared experiences. It was clear that we were more alike than different, and our friendship began to bloom.
One of the most inspiring qualities my best friend possesses is her unyielding determination. From the very beginning, I could see that she had a fierce passion for success, and she was willing to work tirelessly to achieve her goals. This trait was contagious, and it wasn't long before her determination began to influence my own aspirations. Throughout high school, my best friend was there to witness my transformation. I evolved from an insecure, unsure high school student into a more confident young woman with a clear goal: to pursue a degree in psychology. She stood by my side, offering a genuine smile and a heart full of encouragement. Adding on, on of the most aspects of my best friend's influence is her ability to inspire and uplift those around her. When faced with obstacles, she meets them head-on with resilience and tenacity. Her presence in my life serves as a constant reminder of the significance of having a strong support system. In the tumultuous world of academia, where the challenges can often feel insurmountable, having a friend who believes in your capabilities is invaluable. My best friend's influence has propelled me to reach for my goals with unwavering determination and unwavering courage. Her story has not only been an inspiration but also a source of strength for my own journey.
As I continue to pursue my education and career goals in the field of psychology, my best friend remains a cherished source of inspiration. Her unwavering support, her unshakeable belief in my potential, and her determination to succeed have left an indelible mark on my life. She is a testament to the enduring power of friendship and the incredible impact it can have on our growth and development. Because my best friend is the embodiment of inspiration and support in my life. Our friendship, born out of a shared love for the beach, has grown to encompass a bond that transcends time and distance. Her determination, resilience, and unwavering belief in my potential have motivated me to overcome obstacles and pursue my dreams with unwavering determination. Her influence is a testament to the transformative power of friendship, and I am grateful to have her as a guiding star on my educational and career journey.

Inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places, and for me, it lies within the work and transformations of the children I work with as a vision therapist assistant. Every day, I witness firsthand the profound impact that seemingly small alterations can have on young lives, and this motivates me to strive forward in my workd environment and patients. Adding on, my work revolves around identifying and addressing visual challenges and diagnostics that often go undetected in yearly eye exam. Witnessing children transition from struggling with their vision to "graduating" from therapy, no longer needing it.
Influencing change in my community has been an ongoing journey for me, and one that I am deeply committed to. My job allows me to work directly with children, engage with parents, medical and therapy field, and the broader community to raise awareness about the importance of early therapy interventions. As I strive to inspire change in my community, I am driven by the children I work with enhancing their education, self-esteem, and future prospects. Their success will be a testament to the power of early intervention and community support. It is impossible for me to discuss my commitment to community involvement without acknowledging the sacrifices made by my parents. Their dedication and hard work have allowed me to pursue a career that aligns with my passions and it is a privilege for me to pursue. They have navigated numerous challenges to provide me with opportunities they themselves did not have growing up in their motherland. As I continue my career inthe medical field of therapy and making a difference, I view it as an opportunity to honor and repay the sacrifices my parents have made in raising me in a different country they were not familiar with. It is my way of showing gratitude and ensuring that their support results in a positive impact not just for me but for my community as well.
My inspiration to get involved in my community comes from the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of children in vision therapy. This job opportunity has shown me the significance of seemingly minor changes and the ripple effect they can have. It is a privilege to influence change in my community, from direct interactions with children to raising awareness and advocating for early vision care to peers. Every step I take is a testament to my commitment to giving back, not just to my parents but to the broader community that has helped influence me.

Selflessness was not a quality I inherently possessed; it was an expectation that I adapted from a young age. Growing up as a first-generation Cuban-American, I learned that my role extended beyond academics and personal opinion, as a child, my selflessness was primarily through helping my parents navigate the complexities of the American lifestyle and adapt to the new culture. This adaption involved, translating legal documentation to scheduling appointments, and often becoming my own authority and adult figure beginning of middle school. It was a responsibility that I felt shackled to fulfill, even as I struggled to balance it with my own academic responsibilities.Adding on, embodying selflessness has been an evolving process because of the challenges I encountered by myself with no one to help me along the way.
As I entered my teenage years, my selflessness evolved from obligation to resistance. The burden and guilt weighed heavily on me, and I began to rebel against the role that had been thrusted upon me without my consent. I sought solace in seclusion, often retreating to my room to escape the constant demands of my parents. This was my way of asserting my independence, creating a boundary between usmy parents and I that never existed before. This was my way of protesting against the expectations that had dictated my life for so long. My selflessness waned, replaced by a desire for personal freedom which I yearned for a taste of a "normal" teenage experience, free from the responsibility of acting as my family's interpreter and advocate. It was a turbulent time, marked by clashes with my parents and a growing sense of frustration and anger.
However, as I begin to solace within myself during the pandemic and growing older, I came to a comprimise with my parents and them depending on me. It was during this time that I began to actively embrace my selflessness behaviors, not as a burden, but as a guiding principle in my life. I sought opportunities to help not out of having to, but out of genuine compassion and a desire to make a positive impact to strangers and peers without any personal gain and satisfaction. It is a choice, an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. This new perspective did not occur overnight, but rather through a series of experiences that allowed me to see the impact of my actions on those I cared about. In my journey towards embodying selflessness, I have learned that it is not about suppressing one's needs or desires but rather about finding a balance. It is the ability to recognize when duty calls and to respond with empathy and a whole heart. My path, while marked by moments of resistance, has ultimately led me to a place where selflessness is not a mandate but a conscious choice.
In the years to come, I hope to continue growing as a selfless individual. I aspire to use my unique experiences and understanding to support others in their journeys. Whether it's through my career as a psychology student or being a first-generation, I want to be a beacon of compassion and an example not only for myself but for my community.

The career path I chose is in the captivating field of psychology, with a specific focus on child psychology. My choice to delve into child psychology is driven by my own experience growing up and how I am able to heal my inner child through therapy. This triggered my interest in becoming a child psychologist, which fueled my desire to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children who are in need of understanding and support during their developmental years. As children venture on the journey of self-awareness in the outside world, they require guidance and a safe space to explore their thoughts and emotions. I firmly believe that being there for them during these crucial stages of their development can lay the foundation for their mental well-being as they transition into adulthood.
My passion for this field stems from a critical awareness of the lack of attention given to children's psychology and mental health. From what I have witnessed in my study and in my own youth growing up, the emotional challenges of young minds, especially those of elementary school age, are ignored or misunderstood by people around them. The path to becoming a child psychologist is what I strive for in my College career and aligns with my personal experiences and my unwavering dedication to creating positive changes. Returning to school ignited a deep passion within me, unveiling the significance of addressing mental health issues at an early stage. Witnessing firsthand the struggles children face due to a lack of awareness and understanding. This role I want to partake in as a child psychologist is not confined to the child alone; it extends to the family unit as well. By working closely with parents, I aim to provide mental support that fosters healthy communication, empathy, and emotional growth within the family. Empowering parents with strategies to navigate their child's emotional landscape is essential to the success of my chosen path, as it creates a nurturing environment conducive to positive mental well-being for both families and children.
As I set forth on this journey, I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead as I continue my chosen career. The field of child psychology demands a deep well of empathy, research, patience, and the ability to connect on a profound level with young minds. I am committed to continuous learning, staying updated on the latest research and therapy techniques, and ensuring that my practice remains effective and relevant to being the voice of children.
Cheryl Twilley Outreach Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my childhood, I was aware of the different circumstances people around me, such as myself, lived in. These different exposures weaved into my personal experiences and aspirations for a single purpose: to cause positive change in my community and school through mental health resources. This helped me guide my burning passion and commitment to equity.
Central to my mission is the intention to bring forth awareness and openness regarding mental health discussions, especially within the Latinx community. I envision my role as a bridge between two worlds, one of which is hesitant to cross due to generational stigma, trauma, and limited resources. The adverse views on mental health within the older generation's experience drove me to dismantle these barriers. Growing up, the backdrop of my surroundings echoed with tales of hardship, whispered stories of resilience, and the unspoken struggles of those too afraid to share the burdens they experienced within their lives that were harboring their mental health. These narratives illustrated the stark reality that many first-generation immigrants, like myself, were denied the privilege of discussing their mental health. These experiences sculpted my perception of the world, urging me to embrace empathy and seek to be the voice for the unheard and those who are forced to be silenced. My commitment to making a difference derives from the belief that addressing mental health should be woven into the fabric of our communities. By advocating for these discussions within the Latinx community, I aspire to shatter the shackles of silence and create a safe haven for individuals to express themselves.
Experiencing socioeconomic adversity has been a trigger for my confidence. It has fostered empathy, taught me to embrace vulnerability, and deepened my appreciation for the power of community support. As I navigated the challenges of a low-income household, living paycheck to paycheck, I forged bonds with others sharing similar journeys because they are often kept behind closed doors. I have learned that the transformative potential of shared experiences can be harnessed to uplift those around us. With this perspective I gained, I strive to build networks that support individuals in overcoming adversities, reminding them that they are not alone and are able to share their personal experiences confidently.
As I move forward in my educational career in College, my plans are inspired by the dream of creating a mental health support ecosystem not only within the Latinx community but for first-generation and low-income as well. I envision a community where seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness, and where culturally sensitive resources are readily available with the right support. In my opinion, the education and empowerment of the next generation hold the key to breaking the cycle of adversity and fostering a future where mental health conversations are normalized and equitable access to care is ensured for all who are not only seeking it but have it accessible.

Although I may not share the same heritage as Mexican Americans, I understand the struggles of navigating language barriers and the pursuit of education with limited support and resources. I am a first-generation Cuban-American, the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college. As I grew up, I witnessed the immense sacrifices my parents made to provide for me as an only child. They worked tirelessly day and night, balancing two jobs while still facing financial hardships that limited their ability to plan for their retirement and pay for my college. This reality served as a constant reminder of the importance of education and the potential it held to break free from the cycle of financial struggles. Another struggle is the language barrier, which I experienced throughout my childhood. I often found myself serving as the bridge between my parents and the English-speaking world, which did not take kindly to an 8-year-old bilingual child. These experiences, though challenging, instilled in me a sense of strength and adaptability. Having experienced firsthand the limited opportunities my parents faced due to their lack of education and not being English-speaking, I realized that pursuing higher education was not just a personal aspiration but also a way to honor the sacrifices that they have made for me by coming to this country of opportunities.
Being a first-generation Cuban-American college student, I feel a profound responsibility to represent and empower not only my community but also the Latinx. By excelling in my studies and gaining admission to medical school, I hope to become a role model for future generations with similar backgrounds. I want to show young individuals from marginalized communities that their dreams are valid and achievable and that they should not be discouraged from chasing them. Furthermore, as a future child psychiatrist, I am driven to address the mental health differences that exist in Latinx communities, which have always been stigmatized by older generations. I believe that mental well-being is a fundamental right, and everyone, regardless of their background, should have access to high-quality mental healthcare. By focusing on underserved communities, I aim to break down the barriers that prevent individuals from receiving the care they need and deserve. Being a first-generation Cuban-American college graduate carries immense significance in my life. My journey has been shaped by financial struggles, language barriers, and the pursuit of education against all odds. It is this very journey that fuels my passion to succeed, not only for my own fulfillment but also to uplift my community and parents. I am committed to breaking the cycle of limited opportunities and creating a brighter future for generations to come. Through my studies in psychology and my pursuit of a career as a future child psychiatrist, I hope to bring about positive change and advocate for mental health support in underserved communities. By representing and empowering my community, I strive to inspire others to do the same.
Disney Super Fan Scholarship
Millions of people all across the world have a place in their hearts for Disney, an adored and iconic corporation. In my opinion, the most remarkable aspect of Disney is how it continues to evolve and expand, giving each generation a chance to engage with and be represented in its films. Disney's commitment to representation is one of its greatest assets. Disney has come to understand the value of diverse storytelling over the years, working to make sure that every child, regardless of background, can see themselves reflected on the screen. Children can now connect profoundly with the characters they meet thanks to this commitment to diversity, which fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment.
Disney's dedication to representation allows kids to see characters that reflect their own identities and experiences, which is one of the company's greatest strengths. Disney has played a crucial role in fostering diversity and empowering young minds, whether it is through cartoon princesses defying social expectations or characters that shatter gender and racial stereotypes. Children feel validated by this relatability, which encourages them to dream big and think that their voices and stories matter. Disney films were a major part of my upbringing as a child. They helped me develop my imagination and my creative side. These movies were particularly exceptional since they took me to fantastical settings while still including relatable characters and ideas. I learned a lot about courage, perseverance, and the need for self-belief by seeing strong and resilient protagonists conquer challenges. Beyond the enthralling narratives and spellbinding animations, Disney films have irrevocably influenced my own development. I now have a deep sense of empathy, compassion, and faith in the potential of dreams because of these movies. They have motivated me to advocate for what I believe in, to value variety, and to appreciate the differences of others.
Disney has a truly incredible capacity for change, expansion, and generational representation. Numerous kids have been inspired to embrace their individuality, dream big, and believe in their capacity to make a difference because of its diverse stories. Disney has had an incalculable influence on my life. It has influenced the way I think, developed my creativity, and motivated me to fight for inclusivity and change. Promoting significant social issues while also providing enjoyment. It utilizes its platform to engage in discussions about issues like cultural diversity, gender equality, and protecting the environment. Disney inspires children as well as adults to have important conversations and take action to make the world a better place by including these themes in their films. I am thankful for the things I have picked up from Disney as I move into the future. Just as Disney has done for countless generations before me, I am dedicated to fostering a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. I want to help build a more accepting and compassionate society by embracing the power of storytelling, empathy, and representation.
Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
I have faced and overcome several challenges that have molded my journey as I pursue higher education. I had to learn how to navigate the educational system on my own because I am a first-generation Latinx student and my parents did not have the opportunity to go to college or be able to continue their education after high school. One of the biggest obstacles was the absence of my parents' assistance and guidance when I was having academic struggles. They weren't able to comprehend the complexities of the coursework because English was a foreign language to them; subsequently, they were unable to help me. I refused to allow this hindrance to stop me from moving forward, and instead, I looked for alternatives, such as speaking to teachers and using online tools to grasp the material better.
The lack of first-hand knowledge and expertise surrounding the college application and financial aid processes was another challenge I had to overcome. I found it difficult to get through the maze of paperwork and deadlines, but I was not going to let that stop me. In order to be sure I could submit powerful applications to receive the necessary financial aid to pursue my higher education ambitions, I consulted mentors and did significant research. I have a deep appreciation for education's transforming power because of the route I took to get it. I genuinely think that education is a catalyst for change, and I'm determined to use my expertise to better my community, especially in the medical area.
My ultimate objective is to become a child psychiatrist, with the hope that I can dedicate my career to helping children who are disadvantaged provide high-quality healthcare. I want to close the gap between communities with limited resources and gaps in healthcare as a first-generation Latinx medical student. Through my studies, I will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to solve the particular health issues presented by my community. I will have the chance to act as a role model and encourage those in similar circumstances to pursue professions in medicine by being a healthcare professional. In addition, I hope to contribute to studies that attempt to reduce disparities in health care and create medical treatments that are attentive to cultural differences. I can add to this expanding body of knowledge and advocate policies that prioritize ensuring everyone has fair access to healthcare by actively participating in research projects.
Despite the barriers I faced as a first-generation Latinx student, I was able to overcome them because of my persistent dedication to pursuing a degree. I am aware of the enormous significance of education and the chances it can present for both individual development and a positive social impact. I intend to utilize what I've learned as I work towards becoming a doctor to solve healthcare inequities, offer high-quality care, and encourage people to live lives of wellness. By engaging in community outreach and research, I will work to inspire younger people and be a change agent.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
The study and exploration of the universe have long captivated the human imagination. From ancient civilizations gazing at the night sky to modern scientific breakthroughs, humanity's quest to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos has been an enduring pursuit. There are numerous reasons why it is important to understand how the universe works. First of all, as human beings, it satisfies our inherent curiosity. We have pondered the beginnings of our existence, the nature of reality, and our place in the vast cosmic tapestry since the dawn of time. By understanding the mysteries of the cosmos, we satisfy our thirst for knowledge, feed our minds, and expand the horizons of human cognition.
Secondly, an understanding of the universe promotes technological development. Scientific understanding of the universe has resulted in ground-breaking technologies and developments throughout history. The scientific study of the universe, which began with Galileo's telescope and was extended with the Hubble Space Telescope, paved the way for new technologies that have altered numerous industries, such as communication, transportation, and medicine. Further technological developments made attainable by a deeper understanding of the universe will make it possible for us to address difficult problems and improve our standard of living as individuals. And finally, a sense of oneness and interconnectedness is fostered through knowing the universe. We become aware of our place in a much broader cosmic network as we come to grips with the size of the cosmos. This understanding can encourage shared responsibility for the welfare of our planet and its people, as well as humility and empathy. It inspires us to cross all barriers—physical and ideological—and cooperate for a more peaceful and sustainable future.
The scientific process is the foundation of our understanding of the cosmos. Scientists have largely explored the unsolved mysteries of the universe through concepts, experiments, and the evaluation of empirical facts. I firmly believe in the ability of careful testing and observation to test and improve hypotheses and make sure that our knowledge of the cosmos is founded on facts rather than conjecture. Because of the complexity of the cosmos, it takes knowledge from several fields to completely understand all of its intricate details. I support multidisciplinary research in which experts from several disciplines, including physics, astronomy, mathematics, biology, and computer science, collaborate to address challenging cosmological issues. We may leverage the combined knowledge and skill of other fields by encouraging interdisciplinary research, which will lead to a thorough and all-encompassing understanding of the nature of our universe.
The development of technology has greatly increased our knowledge of the universe. I want to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies like high-tech telescopes, space probes, and data processing methodologies as we explore the further reaches of space. In addition, I think that cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and big data analytics have the potential to advance our comprehension of the universe by giving us new tools and approaches to unraveling its secrets. Since mathematics is the universal language of the universe, it has continuously been feasible to construct sophisticated theoretical models and structures to describe how the universe operates.

"The Traveler's Gift" by Andy Andrews is beyond a doubt the book I would suggest to the entire world if I were forced to choose one. This book holds a special place in my heart as it not only reignited my love for reading but also taught me invaluable life lessons about personal perseverance, and personal character growth. In this book, David Ponder, the primary protagonist, has an array of unfortunate occurrences that leave him in an ongoing state of limbo. The reality that he was the sole breadwinner for his family, that his daughter needed tonsil surgery, and that he had lost his job made him feel less as though his world was falling. He debated staying or not while he embarked on his late-night commute back home.
I deeply resonated with David's journey because I, too, felt trapped in a state of uncertainty and stagnation. As I read about his transformation and the wisdom he gained, I felt inspired to reflect on my own life and seek personal growth. The book served as a reminder that life's hardships are opportunities for self-improvement and that resilience and determination can lead to extraordinary outcomes. "The Traveler's Gift" not only delivers powerful messages but does so in an engaging and relatable manner for the reader to empathize with David. Andy Andrews weaves together captivating historical narratives and seamlessly connects them to present-day challenges, this fusion of past and present invites readers to reflect on their own lives and discover the potential for growth and transformation within themselves.
By sharing this book with the world, I believe we can collectively benefit from its wisdom and insights. Its universal themes of perseverance, personal growth, and self-care resonate across cultures and generations, making it a timeless and valuable resource for anyone seeking inspiration and guidance. It is powerful storytelling, profound life lessons, and emphasis on personal growth and self-care make it an invaluable companion for individuals on their journey toward a more fulfilling and purposeful life.
Corrick Family First-Gen Scholarship
As I envision my future career, I am drawn toward making a significant impact in the medical field, specifically in psychiatry/clinical psychology, with a focus on working alongside children. However, my journey has been enriched by experiences that have ignited an unexpected passion for optometry. Because of my current part-time job as a technician, I have come to recognize the crucial importance of eye care, often overlooked as we tend to take our vision for granted. These experiences have shaped my aspirations and motivated me to attend medical school in the future once I graduate College with my Bachelors's in Behavioral Science. From an early age, I have felt a deep connection with children, their emotions, and their mental well-being. I have been around children who needed care ad attention from parents, providers, and licensed psychologists but never received it due to not having the funds of affording it. This affinity sparked my interest in psychiatry and clinical psychology because I wanted to make a difference for the children that needed an adult to listen to their needs and understand what they are going through without feeling inferior. As I engaged in volunteer work and shadowing opportunities, I witnessed how compassionate mental health care can impact young minds. These experiences solidified my desire to pursue a career that involves understanding and addressing the unique psychological needs of children. I aspire to become a practitioner who can provide support and guidance, helping children navigate their emotional challenges and fostering their overall development.
While my focus was initially on psychiatry and clinical psychology, my part-time job as an optometry technician unexpectedly broadened my perspective on my career. This experience immersed me in the world of eye care and revealed the often-underestimated importance of vision health. Witnessing patients' lives transform through improved vision sparked a newfound passion within me that I never knew existed. I began to appreciate the intricate connection between image and overall well-being. Through this role, I developed an understanding of optometry practices, diagnostic tools, and patient care. These insights have opened doors to the field of optometry, which aligns with my aspiration to contribute to individuals' health and happiness by addressing the vital needs of their eyes. Adding on, my past experiences from childhood to the present time have fueled my desire to attend medical school and acquire in-depth knowledge of medical terminology. The exposure gained as an optometrist technician has emphasized the interplay between mental and physical health, strengthening my conviction to pursue a career that combines my interests in psychiatry/clinical psychology and optometry.
As a first-generation Latinx, I carry a sense of responsibility to break barriers and excel in the medical field. I recognize the importance of diversity and culturally sensitive care, and I am determined to be a role model for individuals from similar backgrounds who aspire to contribute to healthcare. My future career aspirations revolve around making a meaningful impact in the medical field, specifically in psychiatry/clinical psychology working alongside children, while also addressing the critical needs of eye care as an optometrist. My current experience in eye care at my part-time job has immensely helped contribute to shaping these aspirations. By attending medical school and merging my knowledge of both fields, I aim to provide comprehensive care to individuals, considering their physical and psychological well-being. With my culture and background, I am committed to breaking barriers and bringing diversity to the medical profession, ultimately leaving a positive imprint on the lives of those I serve.
Bright Lights Scholarship
The path towards my future is often filled with uncertainty and ambiguity, I stand at this crucial juncture between my goals, aspiration, and my career plans that remain undecided. However, there is two fields that have captured my interest: clinical psychology, psychiatry, and optometry. Balancing these aspirations while managing the financial burden can be overwhelming. Therefore, I believe that the invaluable support of this scholarship will not only relieve the strain on my parents and me but also pave the way for my success in both fields. My journey into the realm of psychology began with a curiosity about the human mind and a deep desire to help others. This desire of helping others is rooted from my childhood as I often times had to translate legal documentation to my parents that did not speak and understand english. As I delved deeper into the subject, espeically in school, the prospect of becoming a clinical psychologist resonated with me deeply. To pursue this path, I understand attending medical school to become a child psychiatrist would provide me with the necessary knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on young lives. This field offers the opportunity to understand and treat mental health issues in children, ensuring their emotional well-being and facilitating their growth into resilient individuals.
Simultaneously, my part-time job in optometry has sparked a newfound passion within me, that I never knew of its' existence until now. Working closely with optometrists at my job and witnessing the transformative effects of vision care has pursueded me of the significance of this field. The ability to improve people's quality of life through vision correction is a rewarding endeavor, and educating patients about their eye health has struck a passion in me that the field of psychology has not. Pursuing optometry would allow me to help individuals of all ages by providing them with better vision and enhancing their daily experiences. The knowledge and expertise gained in this field would enable me to contribute to the overall well-being and confidence of my patients. While I am excited about the potential paths ahead of me, the financial burden associated with pursuing higher education weighs heavily on my mind. As my parents have already made significant sacrifices to support my education thus far, this scholarship would provide much-needed relief for both them and me. By easing the financial strain of paying for my semester classes, this scholarship would enable me to focus more on my studies and extracurricular activities. It would allow me to immerse myself fully in my academic pursuits and gain valuable practical experience through internships and research opportunities, thereby enhancing my chances of success in both psychology and optometry. And while my plans for the future may currently be undecided, my passion for both clinical psychology and optometry continues to grow.
This scholarship would play a crucial role in shaping my journey by alleviating the financial burden and allowing me to explore and excel in both fields. With this support, I am confident that I can make a positive impact in the lives of children as a psychiatrist and contribute to the well-being of individuals as an optometrist, ultimately realizing my potential to serve and inspire others.

In today's world, social media platforms are powerful tools to raise awareness and promote social issues that require attention. It is not uncommon to see people advocating for various causes on their social media profiles. As an individual, I have always been passionate about human rights, specifically gender equality. I believe that everyone, regardless of their gender, should have equal opportunities, respect, and dignity. Unfortunately, gender inequality is still prevalent in many societies worldwide. Therefore, I decided to use my social media platform to advocate for gender equality and create awareness about this issue.
The first step I took toward addressing this issue was to research and understand the causes of gender inequality. I read articles, books, and reports to educate myself about the issue and share posts to inform my followers about this issue. This helped me to gain an in-depth understanding and allowed me to make a meaningful impact as an ally. Once I had a clear understanding of the issue, I started creating posts on my social media platforms, specifically Instagram and Twitter. I began by sharing statistics and facts about gender inequality, highlighting the gender wage gap, violence against women, and the lack of women in leadership roles. I also shared stories of women who had overcome gender-based discrimination and inspired others to fight for their rights in the work or educational environment.
Adding on, I made sure to share statistics and stories. I used my platform with less than 100 followers to promote events and campaigns related to gender equality. Sharing information about marches, protests, and rallies organized by advocacy groups and encouraged my followers to participate. This helped to create a sense of community and motivated others to act toward addressing the issue and made me feel more connected to my followers. One of the challenges I faced while advocating for gender equality was dealing with negative comments and criticism from individuals who disagreed with my stance. Some people argued that gender inequality was not an issue or that men were also victims of discrimination. However, I used these comments as an opportunity to educate and engage with my audience. I provided evidence to support my arguments and encouraged respectful discussions. This helped to create a safe and open space for people to express their views while still promoting the cause of gender equality. Even if the other person whom I thought had the same “political stance” or opinions, were disrespectful, rude, and not listening to me, I would block them. Overall, I believe that my efforts to address the issue of gender inequality on social media have been impactful. Although I may have a small following, I know that every post and interaction has the potential to create a ripple effect and inspire others to act toward promoting gender equality.
Because of the impact social media platforms have the potential to be powerful tools for addressing important social issues. As an individual, I have used my platform to advocate for gender equality by sharing statistics and stories, promoting events and campaigns, and engaging in respectful discussions. I believe that every effort counts towards creating a more just and equitable society, and I encourage others to use their platforms to advocate for the causes they believe in.

Recovery means different things to different people. To me, it means setting healthy boundaries for myself and being mindful of my actions and choices. As someone who has struggled with alcohol abuse in the past, recovery has been a journey that has required a lot of introspection, self-awareness, and discipline. Growing up, I was always surrounded by people who enjoyed drinking. Whether it was at family gatherings, parties with friends, or nights out at the club, alcohol was always present. I remember the first time I got drunk; I was only sixteen years old. It was at a family gathering, and I drank so much that I passed out on the couch. While my family members found it amusing, I woke up feeling embarrassed and ashamed. But that did not stop me from continuing to drink. For years, I would go out with my cousins and friends and drink until I blacked out. I did not care about the consequences of my actions or the toll it was taking on my body.
Moreover, recovery means being honest with myself and those around me. It means acknowledging my past mistakes and taking responsibility for my actions. It also means forgiving myself and others and moving forward with a positive attitude. Adding on recovery is not a one-time event; it is an ongoing process that requires dedication and commitment. It involves taking small steps every day toward a healthier and happier life. It requires patience and perseverance.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health is an important aspect of our overall well-being. It is not just about the absence of mental illness but also includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we feel, think, and act and plays a significant role in our ability to cope with stress, make decisions, and form relationships. I believe my mental health is important because it impacts every aspect of my life. When I am mentally healthy, I am better equipped to handle challenges and stressors, have more fulfilling relationships, and am more productive in my work and personal life. On the other hand, when I am struggling with my mental health, it can affect my physical health, lead to difficulties in relationships, and impact my overall quality of life. When I have these stumps, I am physically unable to move or lay in bed, doing nothing.
To maintain my mental wellness, I prioritize self-care and take time to do things that make me feel good. One of these things includes talking an hour away when I can, especially if it is sunny outside. Spending time in nature and getting some fresh air can do wonders for my mental health. I also make sure to get enough sleep and eat a healthy diet, as these factors can also impact mental health. Adding on, I allow myself to cry until I am physically tired whenever I feel overstimulated or ready to "mentally crash." Crying can be a healthy release of emotions and can help me process difficult experiences or emotions. I also prioritize connecting with loved ones and friends and making time for socializing and building relationships, which I realized as I got older the more connected, I felt with my friends and family, the happier I felt.
Sometimes I engage in physical activity as another way I maintain my mental wellness. Exercise has been shown to have numerous benefits for mental health, including reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression and improving mood. I enjoy going for walks, practicing yoga, and doing other forms of exercise that feel good to me. And lastly, if I am still feeling depressed or sad, I will write in my journal to help me express how I feel. Sometimes if journaling is not enough, I will reach out to my friends or significant other if they can lean an ear to listen to me. There is no shame in seeking help, and it can be a crucial step in maintaining and improving mental wellness.
While mental health is an essential aspect of our overall well-being, it also affects every aspect of our lives and plays a significant role in our ability to cope with challenges and stressors. I prioritize self-care, including spending time in nature, connecting with loved ones, engaging in physical activity, and seeking professional help when needed, to maintain my mental wellness. By prioritizing my mental health, I am better equipped to handle the challenges of life and live a fulfilling, happy life.

As a Latinx first-generation college student, I have had many unique experiences that have shaped who I am today. One of the attributes that makes me unique is my ability to speak two languages fluently. Growing up in a Cuban household, I was exposed to Spanish and was taught English at school from a young age, which allowed me to develop strong language skills in both languages. This has not only helped me communicate with a wider range of people but has also given me a greater appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. Another unique experience I have had is studying abroad in Italy during the Fall semester of last year, in 2022. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in a new culture and learn about the history and customs of Italy. It was challenging at times with the language barrier from Italians, but it also helped me develop new skills such as adaptability, independence, and problem-solving. I was able to make new friends, try new foods, and explore new places, which was a truly enriching experience.
However, one of the most important attributes that make me unique is my desire to give back to my community, particularly in mental health. As someone who has struggled with my mental health during the Pandemic, I know firsthand how important it is to have access to mental health resources and support. This is especially true for the Latinx community, where there can be cultural stigmas surrounding mental health and a lack of access to affordable and culturally competent care. As I pursue my education and career in psychology, I plan to use my knowledge and skills to help address these issues and support my community. I hope to work with community organizations and mental health clinics to provide affordable and accessible mental health services to those in need. I also plan to use my language skills to better communicate with Latinx clients and to promote mental health awareness within the community. I believe that it is important to give back to my community because it has given me so much. As a first-generation college student, I have had to overcome many challenges to get to where I am today, and I know that I could not have done it without the support and encouragement of my community and parents. I feel a sense of responsibility to use my education and skills to make a positive impact and help others overcome the challenges that I have faced.
My ability to speak two languages, my experience studying abroad, and my desire to give back to my community through the relief of mental health are all attributes that make me unique. As a Latinx first-generation college student, I am committed to using my education and skills to make a positive impact and support my community. I believe that by working together and supporting each other, we can create a more just and equitable society where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to thrive.

As the impacts of climate change become more apparent and urgent, it's important to take action to reduce our carbon footprint and live sustainably. There are many intentional choices that I make in my daily life to live sustainably, and I believe that these choices are essential to reducing my impact on the planet and creating a more sustainable future. One of the intentional choices that I make is to reduce my energy consumption. I try to use energy-efficient appliances, turn off lights and electronics when I'm not using them, and use natural light whenever possible. I also use public transportation or carpool instead of driving alone when possible, and I choose to walk or bike instead of driving short distances.
Another way I live sustainably is by reducing my waste. I try to buy products with minimal packaging, use reusable bags and containers, and recycle as much as possible. Adding on, I try to make sustainable choices when it comes to my diet by eating a plant-based diet, which has a lower carbon footprint than a diet that includes meat and dairy. I try to buy local and organic produce when possible, and I avoid processed foods and food waste (but this has become tricky due to inflation). But I think it's important to reduce my carbon footprint because climate change has significant impacts on our planet, including more frequent and intense weather events, rising sea levels, and loss of biodiversity. These impacts not only affect the environment but also have significant economic and social consequences, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Reducing our carbon footprint is also an essential part of achieving global climate goals. The Paris Agreement, which was adopted in 2015 by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this goal, we must reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide emissions, which are the primary driver of climate change. By reducing our carbon footprints, we can contribute to this collective effort and help ensure a more sustainable future for all. Living sustainably also has personal benefits, such as saving money and improving our health and well-being. By reducing our energy consumption, we can save money on our utility bills. By eating a plant-based diet, we can improve our health and reduce our risk of chronic diseases. By reducing our waste, we can simplify our lives and reduce clutter and stress.
By living sustainably is essential to reducing our carbon footprint and creating a more sustainable future. And making intentional choices in our daily lives, such as reducing our energy consumption, reducing our waste, and choosing sustainable food options, we can reduce our impact on the planet and contribute to global climate goals. Living sustainably also has personal benefits, such as saving money and improving our health and well-being. By working together to reduce our carbon footprints, we can create a more sustainable and equitable world for all.

Growing up with a disability can be a challenging experience, especially if the disability is not immediately visible to others. For me, this was the case with my speech impediment, which went unrecognized for many years. As a child growing up in a Latinx household, I didn't perceive my speech impediment as a disability because it was looked down upon in my culture and repressed. It wasn't until high school that I finally came to terms with my speech impediment and began to address it. The struggles I faced with a speech impediment were numerous, but the most significant was the fear of speaking in public or in large groups. I was afraid that I would make fun of myself for stuttering or that others would make fun of me because of my stuttering. This fear caused me to withdraw from social situations, and I often avoided situations where I would have to speak in front of others, completely isolating myself. Unfortunately, this avoidance only reinforced my fear and made it even more challenging to overcome.
However, with the support of my friend who also has a speech impediment I did not feel alone anymore. It was a long and challenging journey, but one that ultimately made me stronger and more resilient. I learned that it's okay to ask for help and that with hard work and determination, I can overcome any obstacle. My experiences with a speech impediment have also inspired me to pursue a career in psychology. I believe that psychology has the power to help people overcome a wide range of challenges, including disabilities. I want to use my education and experience to help others in my community who may be struggling with similar challenges.
As a Latinx woman, I also understand the unique challenges that members of my community face. The Latinx community is often marginalized and underrepresented in many areas of society, including healthcare and education. I want to break the norm and create a safe environment for my Latinx individuals who may be struggling with disabilities or other challenges. I believe that by providing a safe and supportive environment, we can help individuals in our community reach their full potential. Because of my experience growing up with a disability, it can be a challenging experience, but it's also an opportunity to learn and grow. My experiences with a speech impediment have taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. It's also inspired me to pursue a career in psychology, where I hope to help others overcome their own challenges. As a member of the Latinx community, I want to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can thrive and reach their full potential. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
Pool Family LGBT+ Scholarship
Growing up in a strict conservative, religious household as a first-generation Latinx, I struggled with my identity as a member of the LGBT community. It was not until I was in my late teens that I finally came to terms with my sexuality, but even then, I kept it hidden from my family out of fear of rejection and judgment. Being part of the LGBT community in a conservative household can be a lonely and isolating experience. I constantly felt like I had to hide who I truly was, and it took a toll on my mental health and my identity as a person because I had no one to turn to. It was not until I found a community of other LGBT individuals that I began to feel more comfortable and confident in my skin. Despite the challenges I faced growing up, I am determined to use my experiences to help others who may be going through similar struggles and feel as if they do not have someone to relate to. My passion for psychology stems from my desire to provide a safe and supportive space for Latinx individuals who identify as LGBT.
In the Latinx community, there is still a significant amount of stigma and discrimination toward those who identify as LGBT. Many individuals feel like they cannot be their true selves and often face rejection and judgment from their families and communities and worse, are disowned by their own families or worse, by their parents. As a result, mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation are prevalent among this population. I believe that as a future mental health professional, it is my responsibility to advocate for the rights of the LGBT community and provide support to those who are struggling with themselves. Through therapy and counseling, I hope to empower individuals to embrace their identities and provide them with the tools and resources they need to navigate the challenges they may face. In addition to my career goals, I am also committed to being an advocate for civil rights and equality. I plan to continue to fight for the rights of the LGBT community through my work and personal life. This includes advocating for policies that promote equality and working with organizations that provide support and resources to individuals who identify as LGBT. Furthermore, I plan to use my privilege as a college-educated individual to educate others on the issues facing the LGBT community in the Latinx community. This includes speaking out against discrimination and advocating for policies that promote equality and inclusion.
My personal experience as a member of the LGBT community in a conservative Latinx household has driven my passion for psychology and my desire to help others who may be struggling with similar issues. I am committed to being an advocate for civil rights and using my skills and knowledge to promote equality and inclusion. I hope that through my work and advocacy efforts, I can help create a more inclusive and accepting society for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The US Constitution is a critical document that lays out the framework for the government of the United States and outlines the fundamental rights and freedoms of its citizens. For many individuals, the Constitution represents a symbol of hope and equality, and they are passionate about upholding its principles and protecting the rights and freedoms of all individuals. The Constitution serves as the foundation for many civil rights protections in the United States, including the right to free speech, assembly, and religion, the right to a fair and speedy trial, and the right to be free from discrimination based on race, gender, and other characteristics. Those who are passionate about the US Constitution often see it as a powerful tool for promoting social justice and equality. They recognize the role that the Constitution has played in shaping the country's history and are committed to ensuring that its principles are upheld and applied fairly to all individuals.
To continue fighting for civil rights throughout my educational career, I can take a variety of steps about the US Constitution. One important way to promote civil rights is to work within the legal system to advocate for the rights of marginalized groups and individuals. This can involve working as an attorney or legal advocate, representing clients who have been discriminated against, or helping to craft policies that protect civil rights. It can also involve serving in government or public office, where individuals can use their positions to enact laws and policies that promote equality and justice. Another way to continue fighting for civil rights is to work within advocacy organizations or community groups that promote social justice and equality. These groups can provide individuals with the necessary resources and support to promote positive change at the grassroots level. Adding on, individuals can use their own platforms and voice to promote civil rights and social justice. This can involve speaking out against discrimination and inequality, supporting political candidates and policies that promote equality, and engaging in activism and advocacy efforts to raise awareness of civil rights issues. Lastly, continuing to educate oneself and stay informed about civil rights issues can be crucial to promoting positive change. This can involve attending workshops and training sessions, reading about current civil rights issues, and staying informed about policy developments at the local, state, and national levels.
While being passionate about the US Constitution can be a powerful motivation for fighting for civil rights and promoting social justice. Working within the legal system, advocacy organizations, and community groups, using one's platform and voice, and continuing to educate oneself are all ways that individuals can continue to fight for civil rights throughout their careers. By upholding the principles of the Constitution and promoting equality and justice for all, individuals can help to create a more just and equitable society for all Americans.

Social issues such as poverty, inequality, discrimination, and climate change are some of the most pressing challenges facing our world today. Addressing these issues requires a multi-faceted approach that involves individuals, organizations, and governments working together to create sustainable solutions. To address an important social issue, it's essential to first identify the root causes and underlying factors that contribute to the problem. Then, individuals can work to create innovative solutions that address these root causes and promote positive change.
One way I have been working to address an important social issue is to become involved in community organizations or advocacy groups that work to promote social justice and equity. These groups can provide individuals with the necessary resources and support to create change at the grassroots level. Another approach is to pursue a career in a field that directly addresses social issues, such as social work, public health, education, or non-profit management. These careers can provide individuals with the skills, knowledge, and resources to make a positive impact on society and contribute to creating a more just and equitable world. In terms of making a positive impact on the world through my pursuit of gaining a career in the mental health field, it is important to first identify my passions, strengths, and values. This can help me choose a career path that aligns with my interests and allows me to make a meaningful impact.
For example, I am passionate about mental health, so I choose a career in psychology or clinical psychology. If you are passionate about social justice, you may choose a career in non-profit management, social work, or human rights advocacy. Moreover, gaining a solid education and developing the necessary skills can be essential to making a positive impact in any career field. Pursuing higher education or vocational training can provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their chosen careers and create meaningful change. In addition to pursuing a career in a specific field, it's important to consider the impact that individual actions and choices can have on the world. Making conscious choices, such as reducing one's carbon footprint, supporting ethical and sustainable businesses, and volunteering in local communities, can contribute to creating positive change on a personal level.
In conclusion, addressing important social issues requires a multi-faceted approach that involves individuals, organizations, and governments working together to create sustainable solutions. Becoming involved in community organizations or pursuing a career in a field that directly addresses social issues can provide individuals with the necessary resources and support to make a positive impact. Pursuing higher education or vocational training can also provide individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in their chosen careers and create meaningful change. Ultimately, making conscious choices and actively working towards creating positive change can contribute to making the world a more just and equitable place for all.
Charles Cheesman's Student Debt Reduction Scholarship
Being a first-generation Latinx that is from a low-income household and background presented numerous challenges for me. These challenges included financial constraints, language barriers, and limited access to resources. These challenges significantly impacted my educational pursuits and career aspirations and financially insecure. It made it more challenging to achieve my goals. Furthermore, being an only child added more pressure to succeed and support my family. However, as I grew older and gained experience, I recognized that these challenges do not define my potential for success and personal growth. To overcome the challenges faced by being a first-generation Latinx individual, I need to take advantage of resources that are available, such as scholarships, mentorship programs, and community resources. These resources that I have mentioned can provide support and guidance in navigating the higher education system and achieving my career goals and becoming the percentage of Latinx that graduated College/ University. Adding on to pursuing higher education, it is also crucial to build a strong network of mentors and allies who can provide guidance and support along the way, and as an only child that did not receive guidance from older siblings, it is a huge advantage for me to use.
My aspiration to pursue a career in the psychology/mental health field is admirable, especially given the negative stigmatism surrounding mental health in the Latinx community. By breaking the mold and becoming a helpful resource and safe space for individuals to share their experiences without feeling judged, I can make a significant impact in my community. Pursuing higher education in this field can be financially challenging, but saving up money can provide the necessary financial resources to achieve my expected goals. Moreover, helping my parents pay off their debts can also provide them with financial stability and reduce the burden on them to support my higher educational career.
Because of being a first-generation Latinx individual from a low-income household can present numerous challenges, but I must recognize that these challenges do not define my potential for success. Pursuing higher education and career goals in the psychology/mental health field can make a significant impact on the Latinx community and break the negative stigmatism surrounding mental health. And saving money can provide the necessary financial resources to achieve my goals while also providing support to my parents. Taking advantage of available resources and building a strong network of mentors and allies can provide guidance and support along the way to my success. With the right mindset and resources, I can achieve my full potential and make a positive impact in my community.
Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
A significant challenge that impacted my mental health would be during my final year of High school, three months before my graduation. I still remember sitting at my desk in English when my teacher announced the variant that is happening in China, and how it would most likely spread to the United States. The students and I paid no mind to her, we were most excited about our Spring break, and what we would do for our free time away from school and teachers. The first week of Spring break was over, dreading Monday morning back to school but before that day, students received an email and phone call from the principal saying that we have an extended break because of the Covid virus.
"One more week of break." I was gleaming, smiling from ear to ear. With this message, I felt as if my senior year of High School could not get any better. After that extended week, I became worried, the pandemic was becoming worse, and every store and establishment temporarily closing down because of the impact this new virus had on everyone. People frantically buying items that they did not need, looting on the streets, and anxiety was rising because no one knew what to do. The transition from an in-person school that I thrive in, to switching to online was difficult for me to grasp. Suddenly my world of interaction and a social life that I looked forward to went down the drain as I coped inside my room with nothing but my laptop, becoming frustrated as it would shut down on me in mid-assignments. As I continued my final three months of High School inside, not being able to go out because of the threat of a global virus, completing my work online with a laptop that my mom had found at her work that barely functioned for my classes, was difficult.
The days were the same for me, it become a blur of how fast time and the weeks would pass by me as nothing in my routine changed. I no longer anticipated my graduation. I questioned myself if I could graduate on time when I read those emails. I was drowned in despair and hopelessness, and my parents, including myself, received electronic mail and phone calls regarding my performance. I was not turning in my work in my classes, my school explained if I did not pass them I would not be able to graduate with my class of 2020. I did not expect but was not surprised to hear this news. My performance before my graduation was not the best and I was feeling utterly defeated as if my academic career was going down the drain because of the impact the pandemic had on me and my mental health. Everything that I had built, anticipating myself to walk down the field and grab my diploma from my principal hand withered away. I felt emotions of being unfair as if I was robbed of the greatest thing that would happen to me as a scholar.
Taylor J. Paul Arts and Media Scholarship
What made me choose to pursue a degree in the arts is a way to express myself in a way I was not allowed to growing up as a first-generation Latinx child. My pursuit to fulfill my degree in the arts is something both of my parents disagree on because of the negative stereotype it has along with it. For example, I would not be able to get a high-paying job that can support me along with being able to financially support both of my parents when they retire. Both of my parents emphasize this because of the struggles they faced when they came to the United States, not only do they want the best for me but they also do not want to see me struggling with a career that will not be able to support me financially.
With this repression I would face because of the lack of financial help, I expressed myself through my art with paintings and poetry. I would let out the part of myself I would not show to my parents or my closest friends. Not because I was afraid of their judgment, I know they would not judge me for who I am as a person but for their opinions of me. I valued their opinions rather than my own. With this value that meant more than myself, I put them first and hid my art and creative expression. Hiding and being my authentic self created a form of isolation that I hid. My creative outlet would be writing online, creating poetries so others that thought or felt the same way I did can relate and not feel like they are alone. That someone, like myself, knows how they also feel.
My creative outlet allowed me to disperse a part of myself that I would hide and repress for the longest time. I would be able to finally accept that I do love art and that my parents' opinions regarding my career choice would finally stop nagging me in the back of my head. My parent's words they would tell me when I would sit at the dinner table about my choice of career would finally stop eating away my inspiration. Instead, my own words of encouragement take over. I began to have confidence in my choice of a future career, I did not doubt myself anymore and finally, the confidence and support I needed when I was younger appeared in front of me.

My Hispanic family background affected the way I see the world something that I had to teach myself to unlearn. As I grew older I realized I grew up with a toxic habit of projecting my insecurities and jealous onto others when they succeed academically or simply win ana award, and as well as comparing myself to others' success. I had to unbind myself from my parent's conservative and protectiveness they had of me ever since I was born in the United States.
Both of my parents, especially my father, told me about how important it is for me to pursue higher education since I was born in the Land of Opportunities, a place where I am free to do as I pleased because I am given the opportunity and freedom to do so. My parents would tell me about their home country (Cuba), they did not the same opportunities I was given in school. The findings that my schools would receive, help the students would get by the teachers, and schools themselves if they saw a student struggling in their class, they did not get the same treatment.
Their description of the way they were taught affected with my desire to succeed in school and pursue a higher education. I thought of my parents and their stories, and I would engrave them into my head to me to move forward. There were moments in my education where I would see other students succeeding in their classes or receiving awards from the school I would feel bitterness and deep jealousy within myself, I felt as if what I was doing was not enough. All of the studying I would do for school and for my classes still was not enough for me to get an award or noticed by my school like my peers were. These ill feelings caused by comparison made by my parents.
Without intention they've coerced me to have competition with my peers, that whatever my peers done, I had to be better because of their struggles they have faced to arrive and stay in the States. I know they did this for me to focus on school but it was not the healthiest way for me to grow up in. Gradually, as I got older, I began to harshly face the reality that my parents constructed me into believing. I believed their words because they are my parents, my parents that have left their home country to create a new and improved life for themselves and their future family. But as I got older, I saw their flaws and the mistakes they have committed. My parents who are afraid of their daughter failing behind, all their sacrifices they've made would go to waste. With this stricken reality, I had to face it by myself. The guilt I would have to endure, my body is not capable of holding. My parents pasts sacrifices pushed me to be born into a more privileged life than they have grown up in, my parents present, working hard so I can make it through school, and my parents future depends on my success in graduating college and getting my degree. With these expectations and feelings pilled up is my reality I wake up to everyday. every step I take onto campus is another step forward to achieving the "American dream" my parents have wanted me to achieve when they first felt the American sand in their hands.

The challenge I have faced is coming into this field of psychology by myself without the help of my parents. I am the first in my family to graduate and have the privilege to continue my education after High School. Financial needs and assistance have also been a struggle that is still prominent in my studying and career, because of this struggle I was hesitant to pursue my career in psychology.
This challenge and struggle did not stop me and my passion to help others and continuing my devotion to learning for myself and for others around me. Both of my parents do what they can to support me and to become a future psychologist. The more I think of the impact I will make for my future and for my community that I grew up in, it gives me a drive keep going. No matter the hardship that I face in my day, I look straight ahead in my path. I keep myself positive by thinking of my family and most importantly, my parents. I think of their proud smiles and their telling's of me to their friends and to my extended family at a family event. This positive scenarios I thrive on to continue any challenges I may face alone. These moments where I feel alone, I imagine my parents telling me that they are proud of me. Although, I already know they are proud of me for being the first to be in college, I want to make them happier with a degree when I graduate college.
I plan to keep a positive impact to the world by focusing on my career to improve mental health. Mental health is not focus on and primarily never been spoken within family. It has been a neglected subject within my community and I believe with myself being in the field, I will be able to open this topic with my family. Slowly introducing this subject that is considered controversial to the older generations. Continuing, my positive impact is also a form of representation. I know what it is like to struggle as a first-generation and how isolating it feels. I am able to speak two languages, Spanish and English, opening two doors of "different worlds" to join one another as one.
With these advantages, I am able to positively impact the world that I grew up with that I myself never got to experience as a child. These qualities can change the world and create unity within a community that have within generations, ignored mental health.

From nativity in my girlhood, transitioning to resentment in my womanhood.
Every man I encountered with handing me trauma that I will have to grow with.
Like a single mother with a baby she never wanted but has to raise by her side.
I have to learn how to be comfortable again, this is a part of me, I convince myself.
It will (never) go away.
This trauma is part of mother now, it cries an ugly wail like screech at night when it is hungry or begging for attention
It consumes anything in can reach with its' grubby small hands.
Only, the mother thought, can it leave her alone for a while for the sake of her sanity.
She holds anger inside her heart but the mother does not want to admit,
she is a mother after all.
mother is supposed to love her child no matter who they are,
mother, she is supposed to be a blank slate that takes care of others and places herself last.
But why is that so?
Mother can be angry until this emotion consumes her flesh,
anger is in my core that used to house my innocence that has ran out the door.

About myself, I am a first-generation Latin-American. Born from proud Cuban immigrants that migrated from crossing borders to get to the United States. Both of my parents tell mee about their struggles as I grew up under their over protection of me, being a first generation and an only child, it is safe to say that I was very shielded when it came to the "outside world".
When my parents would tell me about their struggles of coming to the states and not being able to express themselves freely, restricted in the language barrier. It made me think of the possibilities of my future that I can make for them as I grew older. My future consistent of becoming a successful in the field of psychology, having my own clinic in different parts of the coast and even abroad. My parents, my mom being the most prominent, have always supported my dreams and rants about my future. She has always encouraged me since a young age, with my knowledge of being bilingual I'd be successful. That I'll make it far in my careers because of my language and be able to express myself and the work that I centered myself in.
With my mom telling me to not worry about money, she'd push me to focus solely on my academics and grades. Saying as long as I focus on school, she'd support me. Even if she has to work until she is one hundred years old, she will do everything that she can to support me.
My original plan to remove this financial blockage was to work or become a youtuber that magically becomes viral over night. But knowing who I am, someone who is introverted and is too lazy to edit their own pictures, it wouldn't be possible. I thought there would be a possibility, with the amount of positive results people were getting on posting one video, becoming viral and instantly getting brand deals and contracts, I would also somehow get the same outcome as well. But with a reality check, I know it isn't realistic enough for someone like myself to do make a YouTube video and the video be viral by the next week. I know my reality check to remove the financial blockage was to work at a job that gave me steady income that allowed it to support me in the things that I wanted.

What motivated me to go to college is that I'm determined to continue my education in the Psychology field. I am a first-generation Latinx-American daughter from low-income parents that have taught me at a young age that education is my one-way ticket to succeed in my future. Since I was a child, both of my parents would tell me that school is my future and that my grades are my ride to college. The better I was in school and the more involved I was, the better chance I had to be accepted to the colleges of my choice. My parents have always told me that I have the privilege to continue my education and that I should always pursue it no matter how difficult it was for me or them financially.
Second, They shared with me their struggles of receiving their education back in their home country. My mother told me she had to drop out in middle school, when she was just twelve years old and had to start working in order to help her mother at home. While my father was a bit more privileged and was able to graduate high school, but was not able to pursue any further in his career because of lack of position in his city. My parents do not share much information of their childhood growing up, but I know that I'm more privileged than they were growing up. Being born outside of their country that restricted them access from outside media, and resources to maintain a lifestyle.
I knew since a young age I was financially strained, I did not have the privilege of never worrying about money and stressing about it as I grew older. This worry that would be in the back of my mind ignited my passion to continue my education but would also stump me as Covid-19 appeared in my final year of high school, in 2020. My worries that I had with financial issues, now turned into if furthering my education and pursuing my career was worth it during the pandemic. I toke a two and a half gap year as a way for me to decide if attending school was truly for me. With the help of my parents, encouraging words from my mother who would always tell me whenever I felt insecure during the gap year. She lifted me from the ground and brought me back to my feet.
Now I am in school, pursuing my bachelors degree in psychological science. This field I have always been intrigued and attached to. I believe that the gap year I toke was the best for me during that time, I do not regret my decision that I made for myself. I have no doubts anymore about my education like I did before. But to continue pursing it with passion and integrity.
