Bio

My name is Nickolas Carter. I am a part of the class of 2026 at Iowa State University. I am from Pittsfield, Illinois. I am studying Aerospace Engineering at the College of Engineering. I chose to go to Iowa State University for many reasons. Iowa State has a great engineering program that will propel me into the career I want. Not only does Iowa State have these amazing programs, but it is also a beautiful campus with many opportunities with all the student organizations. The campus is in a smaller town compared to other major colleges, making it feel more welcoming. Aerospace engineering is what I chose to study because I want to have a hands-on career and want to work with math and physics. I have always been engaged in math class and enjoy doing math. With physics, I get to use my math skills in real-world situations. I also enjoy making different designs for projects. I like testing the designs to see where their faults are and making adjustments to them. Before I graduate, I plan to get an internship where I can get real-world work with the knowledge I gained inside and outside the classroom. After graduation, I hope to get a career in design for an aerospace company. Whether it's planes, rockets, or even drones, being able to help design the future of aviation will be an exciting experience to be a part of. The accomplishment I am most proud of is being on the Dean’s List for my first two semesters at Iowa State. Not only did I get good grades, but I was able to stay involved while doing so, making it even more rewarding.

With physics, I get to use my math skills in real-world situations. I also enjoy making different designs for projects. I like testing the designs to see where their faults are and making adjustments to them. I specifically chose aerospace because I have been interested in crafts that fly. When I was younger, I used to fly drones with my grandpa. All these reasons are why aerospace is the best choice for me to study. Before I graduate, I plan to get an internship where I can get real-world work with the knowledge I gained inside and outside the classroom. After graduation, I hope to get a career in design for an aerospace company. The accomplishment I am most proud of is being on the dean’s List for my first two semesters at Iowa State. While this might not seem like a huge accomplishment, it is to me. This is a great accomplishment because of the work that I put in. Not only did I get good grades, but I was able to stay involved while doing so, making it even more rewarding. Since starting at Iowa State University I was Vice President of my floor at Larch Hall. I joined Delta Upsilon Fraternity and I have met a great group of people. By joining Delta Upsilon, I have been able to get involved with events around campus, including homecoming. I have also been able to do community service through Delta Upsilon and raised money for our philanthropy. I joined the Rocketry Club, Innovators Making Positive Advancements in Creative Technologies, SAE Formula One, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics during my freshman year at Iowa State.

My educational goal is to receive a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering. I am interested in a minor in finance and/or acquiring a real estate license. I am seeking an internship or CO-OP to gain professional experience and knowledge to help with my future career in Aerospace Engineering. By doing so, I will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the profession I am majoring in. Also by getting an internship or CO-OP, I should have more knowledge about how I want to proceed in my career. For my future career, I want to pursue employment where I can work on designing and making rockets among other aerospace products. I am also looking for jobs where I can work on drones and design them. Aerospace Engineers can specialize in designing different types of aerospace products. One of my main interests is designing, but through the internships or CO-OPs that I plan on participating in through college, I am sure to find the field of Aerospace that will work for my future career interest. In my freshman year of high school, I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. After I researched IMSA, I applied and got accepted with little help from my parents. We did not have any knowledge of IMSA or even heard of the school at this time. When we realized the opportunities of IMSA I applied. Even though IMSA is a little over 4 hours away from home, especially after just having major back surgery, I was determined to be an IMSA student. I had to have a significant spinal infusion surgery at the end of my freshman school year. I then started school at IMSA at the end of July, beginning with Excel. I had to accept that I was unable to do things physically the way I would normally be able to. I had to learn to ask for help which I was not accustomed to doing. I had to depend on some of my friends at IMSA to help carry things and stand back while others played physical sports/activities. After I started my sophomore year at IMSA, living on campus, unfortunately, COVID happened and had to leave the campus. I had to learn to do online school through IMSA for the end of my sophomore and all of my junior years. Online school, with IMSA, alone in my room was a great accomplishment. It was a little bit of a struggle trying to learn to work on my own, instead of in groups; not to mention technical difficulties. Since I have been attending Iowa State University, academically, it has been challenging but fun. In one of my classes, we were put into groups. We were expected to get together and design a drone. Later all groups got together to test them. My group's drone made it to 2nd place. Most of my community service comes from tutoring in math. During High School, while attending Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, I tutored during my summers and the school year. I really enjoyed it because I love math. During all of the tutoring sessions, I would facilitate small groups and try to get them to work together, if a student had an individual question I would answer it. This scholarship will help finance my dream of becoming an Aerospace Engineer. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to apply.

During this, I was able to get hands-on experience by designing bridges and studying the effect on different bridge angles. We compared the length of a bridge spanned with the force that could be applied to the bridge depending on the angle. Most of my community service comes from tutoring. The community that I grew up in is a rural farming community. The farms and property were handed down through time to the newest generations of family members. Generational wealth is a huge thing where I came from. My family is not one of those families. I plan to achieve my wealth by going to college and becoming an Aerospace Engineer. My education goal is to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering and I plan to continue my education to get my Master's Degree. My educational goal is to receive a Master’s Degree in Aerospace Engineering. I am interested in a minor in finance and/or acquiring a real estate license. I feel I have accomplished a lot in my career as a student. I was elected to the Illinois Association of Junior High Student Councils (IAJHSC) at the beginning of his 8th-grade year. I have always been a member of the SOAP (Student of Advanced Pupils) program during junior high. I was in student council, band, and Jazz Band through my 8th-grade year. I also received the Principles Award during graduation. During my freshman year I was a part of the Pike County Conference Honor Band (PCC) and, after trying out, got to play in the band. This was important because it showed me that when I want something I can get it. Also, during my freshman year, I was a part of the student council at my old high school. I had many leadership roles, from helping with the food and toy drive to helping set up for homecoming. In my freshman year of high school, I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. My later-in-life career goal is to manage an engineering firm and oversee multiple projects that the firm will be working on. My family's financial situation has its ups and downs. My dad is a Real Estate Agent working with my uncle as the Broker. We never know when he is going to make that next sale. My mom is a bus driver for Pikeland Community Schools located near my hometown and she is also a Paraprofessional. My sister is also attending college at Eastern Illinois University located in Charleston, Illinois. She will be a senior this year. In my freshman year in high school, I had to have a major spinal infusion surgery. The surgery took a toll on my family's finances. Immediately after that, COVID happened. The COVID Pandemic left my family more financially burdened. Last summer I worked at Yogi Bear (Pine Lakes) at the snack bar to earn college money and I plan to do the same this summer. I attended Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy for high school and was not allowed to have a job during the school year. So, my only earning potential was during the summertime. However, I do plan to work on campus or apply for employment during my college years. My grades and academics will come first; my attention will be to apply for as many scholarships as possible to help with school financing. Most of my community service comes from tutoring. During High School, while attending Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, I tutored during my summers and the school year. I tutored in the summers of 2020 and 2021, When I tutored I did it for a month 5 days a week. I enjoyed it. During the school year, I tutored on Saturdays from am to pm. During all of the tutoring sessions, I would facilitate small groups and try to get the students to work together. If a student had an individual question I would help them to find the answer. When I attended IMSA in high school, we were required to get 20 volunteer service hours before graduation. I can positively say that I received all my volunteer service hours before my junior year of high school. I did go on to receive above the required hours. I am also volunteering with the fraternity I joined at Iowa State University. Tutoring is how I like to volunteer but with the fraternity, there are more options.

I also feel our government has a lot of corruption. I'm not sure how, in my career, I can help with our rights. I do plan on speaking out, calling our representatives, voting, and keeping a close eye on our government.

During all of the tutoring sessions, I would facilitate small groups and try to get them to work together, if a student had an individual question I would answer it. Since starting at Iowa State University in the fall I have had a lot of good experiences. I joined Rocketry Club, Innovators Making Positive Advancements in Creative Technologies, SAE Formula One, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Vice President on a Residential floor, Skiing, and Snowboarding Club. Academically, it has been challenging but fun. In one of my classes, we were put into groups. We were expected to get together and design a drone. Later all groups got together to test them. My group's drone made it to 2nd place.

My education goal is to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering and I am planning to continue my education to get my Master's Degree eventually. I am also looking for careers where I can work on drones and design them. Aerospace Engineers can specialize in designing different types of aerospace products. One of my main interests is designing, but through the internships or CO-OPs that I plan on participating in through college, I am sure to find the field of Aerospace that will work for my future career interest. Aerospace Engineering is an important career. It will make travel for people faster and will get us advanced equipment for space exploration and adventures. I want to be a part of that next step of future travel. Aeronautical Engineers improve consumer and military air transportation, their work has real-world applications that improve the lives of those who rely on their technology for safe travel. There are so many opportunities in Aerospace Engineering such as working on weather satellites, GPS navigation, outer space explorations, aircraft, and so much more. When I was a freshman in high school I was diagnosed with scoliosis. I was told I had to have major back surgery. This was a scary time for me not only physically but mentally as well. I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. IMSA is a higher education high school and a privilege to attend. I had to do a lot of testing and jump through hoops to get excepted at IMSA. Then I found out I had to have surgery at the end of May and start classes at IMSA in July. I started my sophomore year attending IMSA and had to live away from home in the dorms. This was challenging for me because I was meeting new people and I had to ask for a lot of help. I graduated my senior year from Illinois Math and Science Academy High School. Long story short, I had to learn different ways to move my body to protect my back. Living in my comfort zone was a thing of the past; I had to learn to be vocal with my peers and teachers. If I want to be honest, this was the toughest time of my life but I was determined. My education goal is to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering and I plan to continue my education to get my Master's Degree. When I was in middle school graduating to go to high school, my uncle, my mom's brother was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was a smoker. It was actually on Easter Sunday. I remember it like it was yesterday. He was having stomach pains so my mom took him to the emergency room. The doctor did a chest x-ray and was able to see something in his lungs. They transferred him to a bigger hospital in the area. I remember this so vividly because this took a toll on my mom. My uncle was not married and my mom was his caretaker. He was diagnosed in April and he died in July. Seeing my mom during these months and watching what was happening with my uncle, was a rough time. My uncle was only 55 years old and had a lot of life yet to live. Unfortunately, he was taken too soon. What I learned from this experience was I knew I would never smoke. I also learned that it is important to take care of your body. Something I also got out of this tragedy, take advantage of the time you have in life and live to your potential. There are so many opportunities in Aerospace Engineering such as working on weather satellites, GPS navigation, outer space explorations, aircraft, and so much more. In my freshman year of high school, I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. After I did the research on IMSA, I applied and got accepted with little help from my parents. We did not have any knowledge of IMSA. When we realized the opportunities of IMSA I applied. Even though IMSA is a little over 4 hours away from home. I had to have a major spinal infusion surgery at the end of my freshman school year. During the Excel program in high school got to be a leader to the new incoming sophomores and was able to get to know them and tell them about IMSA. I was able to be a mentor to them and it was a really nice experience for me. I also got to help with the residential programs and help brainstorm ideas for activities that we could do on the weekends to help the students bond with each other because during Excel we were online and it was hard for the students to talk to each other so I tried to help them get to know each other. After I started my sophomore year at IMSA, living on campus, unfortunately, COVID happened, and had to leave the campus. I had to learn to do online school through IMSA for the end of my sophomore and all of my junior years. Online school, with IMSA, alone in my room was a great accomplishment. It was a little bit of a struggle trying to learn to work on my own, instead of in groups; not to mention technical difficulties. My community service comes from tutoring during High School. While attending Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, I tutored during my summers and during the school year. I tutored in the summers of 2020 and 2021, I did this for a month 5 days a week. During the school year, which I did my junior year, I tutored on Saturdays from am to pm. During all of the tutoring sessions, I would facilitate small groups and try to get them to work together, if a student had an individual question I would answer it.

IMSA is a higher education high school and a privilege to attend. I started my sophomore year attending IMSA and had to live away from home in the dorms. I graduated my senior year from Illinois Math and Science Academy High School. One thing I participated in my senior year was the Student Inquiry and Research Project at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. During this, I was able to get hands-on experience by designing bridges and studying the effect on different bridge angles. We compared the length of a bridge spanned with the force that could be applied to the bridge depending on the angle. Another thing I did was be a tutor for the EXCEL program at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. During this summer program, I tutored incoming students in math. I would facilitate small groups when working and would answer any of the questions they had. Not only was I a tutor for them, but I and the other tutors would hold events for the students to attend, so they could get to know one another. A personal experience that has been a highlight in my life is all the events that IMSA has. From Clash of the Halls and Wing Wars to the different cultural events. It has been a highlight because I would not have been able to experience these events at my old school. The events have brought me closer to my peers and that is something I will always value. The memories that I made at Clash and the other events around campus are what helped shape who I am. I made memories and lifelong friends that I will always remember. The events, even though some were canceled because of COVID-19, will be a memory that will be with me for life. The people that I met at IMSA, being like-minded, and the memories that we made along the way are the highlights of my personal experience at IMSA. Since starting at Iowa State University in the fall I have had a lot of good experiences. I ran for Vice President of my floor at Larch and won. Academically, it has been challenging but fun. In one of my classes, we were put into groups. We were expected to get together and design a drone. Later all groups got together to test them. My group's drone made it to 2nd place. Ending the first semester, I am happy to report, I did make the Dean’s List.

Before attending IMSA, I thought achieving an A was nothing. IMSA has taught me to get a B and still be proud of the work that I put into the paper, project, or how I did on that last test. This has been a turning point in my life showing me that I am not going to be perfect at everything but that I can still be proud of what I have done.

We were sold on attending Iowa State University. When I got home, I did all the necessary research. Iowa State offered everything that I was wanting in academics and more. One thing I participated in my senior year of high school was the Student Inquiry and Research Project at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. During this, I was able to get hands-on experience by designing bridges and studied the effect on different bridge angles. During the EXCEL program, during the evening, all the tutors would hold study sessions for the students, so if they needed help, the students could join the zoom meeting. Since the program was online, it was hard for the students to get to know each other and form bonds. Because of this, some of the other tutors and I held virtual events during the weekends. We would have games to play, like jeopardy, just so the students could bond with each other. We would also have virtual lunches, where we joined a zoom meeting and ate lunch together, so the students could get to know us and each other better. I feel that I have had an impact on the incoming students.

For my professional career, I would like to eventually work at NASA or SpaceX. I would like to pursue Aerospace Engineering because I am interested in space exploration, and find it really interesting that one day we might be able to set up colonies on Mars or on the Moon. I will begin my educational career by going to a university and studying Aerospace Engineering. I will work to get my Bachelor’s Degree. While I am doing undergraduate school, I am wanting to do the Cooperative Program (co-op) that many of the schools I applied to offer. Ideally I will be able to get a co-op at NASA or SpaceX, which at some of the schools people have in the past. Through this, I will be able to get the work experience and hands-on experience that is necessary for this job. Also at many of the schools I applied to I will be able to join the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronauts (AIAA). Through this I will get to work on projects, like making rockets, and getting that hands-on experience. I will also be able to do outreach for other students that might be interested in aerospace and I would like to be able to share my knowledge with them. At Iowa State University there is also a program called Make to Innovate (M:2:I). If I attend there, I will participate in this program, which also provides a more hands-on experience. After graduating and getting my Bachelor’s Degree, I would like to continue my education and get my masters in Aerospace Engineering. By continuing my education I would get more knowledge of the subject and really stand out to large aerospace companies, like SpaceX. Before working at a major aerospace company for rockets, I would like to work somewhere that worked with drones. I have some of the best memories flying drones with my grandpa and would like to work on them before I go into the career that I do until I retire. I also think doing this will help me later at these companies by giving me the work experience needed. After I decide I am done working on drones, I will hopefully achieve my goal of working at NASA or SpaceX.

The project consisted of us working with Balsa Wood and making two ladder pieces. We would glue the ends of two of the ladders together at different angles to make the bridges. The point of the research was to find at what angle between the two sides is best for the bridge to span the longest distance while being able to support the most weight. I learned and wanted to do this project because it gives me experience with engineering, which is what I am wanting to go into. It lets me build and test the different models that I have designed and make adjustments to get the best results from my project. Overall, having leadership rolls are important. It will prepare me for my future college career and my career after I graduate from college. Having leadership rolls allows me to have more confidence in myself and gives me experience.

Outside of school, I like to spend as much time as I can with family and friends. When I am not doing school work, in class, or doing my extracurricular, I like to spend my free time with family and friends. Having a strong bond between people can help you socially and emotionally, and the strong bonds that you form are important and form trust. I like to play card games and just hang out with people when I can. Along with spending time with friends, some other activities that I like to do is to go to football games and basketball games at IMSA or when I am home and there are games. It is always a nice way to distress with friends by going to sporting events, or the cultural events that IMSA has. During the different times of the year I like to do different activities with my friends and family in the summer. We will normally go swimming and we will go kayaking in the lake. In the winter we will go sledding and just be in the snow whenever it does snow. I think that being able to do these activities are fun and you make memories as I do them. Spending time with them is important and I think that not only is it for fun and making memories but it is also a way to reduce stress for me and that is an issue for some people. I know that when I am stressed I can go spend time and do activities to reduce the stress and make me take a step back and enjoy what I am doing before I get too stressed.

My freshman year of high school I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. After I did the research on IMSA, I applied and got accepted with little help from my parents. We did not have any knowledge of IMSA or even heard of the school at this time. When we realized the opportunities of IMSA I applied. Even though IMSA is a little over 4 hours away from home, especially after just having major back surgery, I was determined to be an IMSA student. I had to have a major spinal infusion surgery at the end of my freshman school year. I then started school at IMSA at the end of July, beginning with Excel. I had to accept that I was unable to do things physically the way I would normally be able to do. I had to learn to ask for help which I was not accustomed to doing. I had to depend on some of my friends at IMSA to help carry things and stand back while others played physical sports/activities. IMSA had a carnival and I was unable to participate in a lot of things. This was hard for me. IMSA has impacted my life by offering more opportunities to learn. I have had the chance to join different clubs and meet new friends with more diverse backgrounds, personalities, and beliefs at IMSA. I have had the privilege to have a leadership role. One of the most memorable ones for me was being able to be a tutor for the Excel program at IMSA. During Excel I got to be a leader to the new incoming sophomores and was able to get to know them and tell them about IMSA. I was able to be a mentor to them and it was a really nice experience for me. I also got to help with the residential programs and help brainstorm ideas for activities that we could do on the weekends to help the students bond with each other, because during Excel we were online and it was hard for the students to talk to each other so I tried to help them get to know each other. After I started my sophomore year at IMSA, living on campus, unfortunately, COVID happened and had to leave the campus. I had to learn to do online school through IMSA for the end of his sophomore and all of my junior year. Online school, with IMSA, alone in my room was a great accomplishment. It was a little bit of struggle trying to learn to work on my own, instead of groups; not to mention technical difficulties. A turning point in my academic career happened at IMSA as well. I went from being able to get straight A’s and not having to try academically or study as much at school until I started to attend IMSA. Going to IMSA has been a challenge academically to say the least. I was no longer the smartest student, or ranked number 1 in the class. Going to IMSA has taught me how to do bad and yet still be happy about how you did. IMSA has taught me to get a B and still be proud of the work that I put into the paper or project. This has been a turning point in my life to show me that I am not going to be perfect at everything but that I can still be proud of what I have done.

A personal experience that has been a highlight in my life is all the events that IMSA has. From Clash of the Halls and Wing Wars, to the different cultural events it has been a highlight because I would not have been able to experience these events at my old school. The events have brought me closer to my peers and that is something I will always value. The memories that you make at clash and the other events around campus is what helps shape who you are and make memories you will always remember. The events, even though some are canceled because of COVID-19, will be a memory that will go with me for life. The people that I met at IMSA, being like-minded, and the memories that we made along the way are the highlights for my personal experience at IMSA. Outside of school, I like to spend as much time as I can with family and friends. When I am not doing school work, in class, or doing my extracurriculars, I like to spend my free time with family and friends. My vision for impacting the world will be because of all my education and work experience. I plan on doing good things.

My freshman year of high school I received a postcard in the mail to apply to attend Illinois Mathematic and Science Academy (IMSA) for my sophomore, junior, and senior years of high school. IMSA offered more opportunities to learn. I have had the chance to join different clubs and meet new friends with more diverse backgrounds. I have had the privilege to have a leadership role. I was able to be a tutor for the Excel program at IMSA and a mentor to them; it was a really nice experience for me. Before attending IMSA, I thought achieving an A was nothing. IMSA has taught me to get a B and still be proud of the work that I put into the paper, project, or how I did on that last test. This great experience was because I was patient and worked hard.
