Bio

Hi, my name is Nicholas Bonilla! I am currently a student at Pennsauken High School, and am on track to graduate in 2023. Academically, I currently have a GPA of a 4.3833 on a 4.0 scale, and am currently ranked #1 in my graduating class. I am no stranger to AP classes, as well as the sleepless nights and countless hours of studying that come with it. When it comes to extracurriculars, I like to involve myself with as much as I can in high school. For the past four years, I have been the Class President of my graduating class, as well as the President of Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society) and the Vice President of the Science National Honor Society. I am currently also a part of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. I also partake in a number of clubs that house many people with similar interests as me, including the Asian Student Association, the Leo Club, and the Chess Club. In my high school, I am a student-athlete. I have been a four-year varsity starter for my high school's soccer team, a varsity starter for the volleyball team, a varsity golf player, and a varsity starter for the bowling team. I have acted as team captain for the soccer team, being able to bond and grow alongside my many teammates. I am also an avid wearer of socks.

    Wellness Warriors Scholarship
College life is often described as a whirlwind of lectures, assignments, and social engagements, leaving little time for self-reflection and personal well-being. As a student, I have come to realize that managing personal wellness is not just a luxury; it is a necessity that nurtures the flame within, allowing it to burn brightly even amidst the chaos of academic pursuits. In this heartfelt essay, I will share some of the ways I have discovered to navigate the delicate balance between academic commitments and personal well-being while attending college. One fundamental aspect of managing personal wellness is maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of late-night study sessions fueled by caffeine and unhealthy snacks. However, I have learned that nourishing my body with nutritious food, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep is essential for sustaining both physical and mental health. By prioritizing regular physical activity, such as jogging or yoga, I not only increase my energy levels but also find solace in the midst of academic pressure. Taking care of my body has become a form of self-love, enabling me to stay focused, motivated, and resilient throughout my college journey. Another crucial element in managing personal wellness is cultivating a support system. College can be an isolating experience, with demanding schedules and increasing responsibilities. However, I have found that by surrounding myself with friends, family, and mentors, I am reminded of my intrinsic worth and receive the encouragement and empathy needed to persevere. Engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing laughter, or seeking advice from those who care about my well-being has not only alleviated stress but also deepened my sense of belonging. The genuine connections forged during these moments of vulnerability have served as a lifeline, enabling me to navigate the turbulent waters of academia with a stronger sense of purpose. I have discovered that engaging in activities that bring me joy and fulfillment is crucial for maintaining personal wellness. College life can often feel like an endless cycle of coursework and exams, leaving little room for personal interests and passions. However, I have realized that carving out time for activities that ignite my soul, such as writing, painting, or volunteering, not only provides a much-needed respite but also enhances my academic performance. These pursuits serve as a reminder of my multidimensionality, nurturing my creativity and allowing me to approach my studies with renewed vigor and perspective. Maintaining personal wellness is not merely a personal indulgence; it is an essential ingredient for success as a student. By prioritizing self-care and well-being, I have discovered that my academic performance has improved significantly. This self-awareness has allowed me to identify early signs of stress or burnout, empowering me to take proactive measures to address these challenges before they spiral out of control. When I am well-rested, physically fit, and emotionally supported, my ability to concentrate, retain information, and engage with course materials is enhanced. The constant buzz of college life can be overwhelming, leaving little room for introspection and self-care. Yet, by dedicating even a few minutes each day to practices like meditation, journaling, exercise, or simply treating your body right, I have learned an important perspective: treating yourself with kindness, compassion, and embracing your imperfections are the stepping stones to anyone’s path to growth.
    Project Pride of NJ Scholarship
Over the summer, a few friends and I volunteered at a local food bank. I was struck by the number of people in my community struggling with homelessness and food insecurity. It was a humbling and eye-opening experience, and it made me realize just how fortunate I am. Since that experience, I have made it my mission to act locally and do my part to help make a difference in my community. It has sparked me to participate alongside members of my school’s Leo Club, where I have also participated in other community service projects, such as park cleanups and sponsoring an online gaming tournament as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for childhood cancer. I have also become more politically active and have taken steps to educate myself about issues that are important to me. I have attended local town hall meetings and have written letters in my AP Government and Politics class to our township’s and state’s elected officials, to advocate for causes that I believe in. In addition to acting locally, I have also become more involved in global issues, specifically through donating to organizations that are working to make a noticeable difference on a global scale. As a student, I have always been passionate about making a difference in my community, the country, and the world. I believe that it is our responsibility as citizens to work towards creating a better world for ourselves and future generations. I have been fortunate enough to use my platform as Class President for the past four years, to share the importance of community with my peers on a broader scale. Being able to share with my peers the importance of community service as well as encouraging them to participate in community service is one of the privileges that I am grateful for with my position as Class President of my high school. As a student, I think that it is our responsibility as citizens to work towards creating a better world for ourselves and future generations. This mentality is something that will be applicable not only during the rest of my senior year but for my time in a post-secondary institution as well. I hope to be able to still act as a great influence to those around me both on-and-off campus in hopes of making a positive impact on my community and city. I believe that by taking small steps and making a difference in my own community, I can inspire others to do the same.
Morgan Levine Dolan Community Service Scholarship
As an incoming finance major, I have always been fascinated by the world of finance and the role it plays in the global economy. I have always dreamed of working in investment banking or corporate finance, and I believe that earning a degree in finance will provide me with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in these competitive fields. However, as a student, I have also faced many financial challenges. My parents have done their best to support me, but the cost of tuition, books, and living expenses can be overwhelming. I have always worked small part-time jobs to help cover my expenses, but this often leaves me with little time to focus on my studies as well as my extracurriculars, whether that be with varsity soccer, honor societies, or spending time with friends. This is where a scholarship would be incredibly helpful. With a scholarship, I would be able to focus on my studies and not have to worry about working a part-time job to cover my expenses. This would allow me to put all of my energy and attention into my studies, which I believe would lead to a higher GPA and better chances of success in my finance degree. In addition to this, it would allow my parents to also have an easier time with finances, as well as be my way of contributing to the many costs of college. I have always been a dedicated and hardworking student, and I am confident that with the right resources and support, I will be able to succeed in my finance degree and achieve my career goals. In college, I hope to take a variety of finance courses, including financial accounting, financial management, corporate finance, and investments. These courses will provide me with a strong foundation in finance and help me to develop a deep understanding of the subject. In short, a scholarship would help me succeed in university by providing financial support, allowing me to focus on my studies, and serving as a source of motivation and recognition. It would allow me to pursue my dream of working in investment banking or corporate finance and make the most of my time at university. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for a scholarship and I hope that with your support, I will be able to achieve my goals and make a positive impact in the world of finance.
    Learner Higher Education Scholarship
The first few days of American Legion Jersey Boys State, a selective nationwide program that teaches principles of both leadership and political science at Rider University, were excruciating: canicular weather, extensive seminars and lectures, and getting used to a bathroom schedule with my dorm roommates. I had been dropped off miles and miles away from my familiar room onto an unfamiliar college campus, filled with hundreds of New Jersey’s top scholars and athletes. I had to fend for myself, make friends and foes, and pay strict attention to lectures on the pillars of political science. But it was here that I learned why I wanted to go to college and pursue higher education. From the moment I arrived, I knew it was important for me to make friends so that I could make it through the week. I eventually found a small group of people that shared similar interests to me, mainly sports teams and music taste. This taught me the importance of making connections, and how opportunities like this were present in college. Pursuing higher education is not only just for learning more about your desired career, but also to meet other like-minded peers and professors that will teach you more and allow you to also grow. It was also with these people that I attended the majority of my seminars; these were usually large halls filled with many students, all learning from a single professor. Being in a college setting like this motivated me to not only stay engaged with the speaker, but allowed me to take more out of the lesson. College classes are intended to teach and prepare their students for their occupation in the real world, and although I am not preparing to enter an occupation in political science, I had felt engaged to learn more about the speaker’s teaching. And even though we were given a schedule to follow, it had displayed to me the importance of freedom and responsibility. It was different from high school: there were no school bells to listen for or no one to hold my hand. Being in a college setting taught me the importance of accountability, and made me feel motivated to attend these lengthy seminars, just to avoid disappointing my peers or my professor. This “college life” experience had not only taught me the importance of pursuing higher education, but why it makes those who come out of it more successful. As a child of immigrants, the importance of higher education has been drilled into my head since the moment I could say “Mama”. It has always been the dream of my parents to be able to say that their son graduated from a four-year university with flying colors. But why did that have to be my dream? I never really liked the idea of attending a college to earn a degree and eventually pay off an absurd amount of debt; so why did I have to? It was not until I had been nominated to attend the American Legion Jersey Boys State, that I had truly understood the importance of higher education. As that week at Rider University went on, I began to enjoy the canicular weather, the extensive seminars and lectures, and the bathroom schedule with my dorm roommates. As that week at American Legion Jersey Boys State went on, I began to understand the importance of making connections, attending lengthy seminars, and being responsible with newfound freedom. Although higher education may not be for everyone, the experience gained from attending is both monumental and unique. And it'll also make your parents proud and happy.
