Grandmaster Nam K Hyong Scholarship
Growing up in a financially disadvantaged family in Vietnam, my journey toward higher education has been shaped by determination and resilience. As a first-generation international student, I faced numerous challenges, including language barriers, navigating immigration paperwork, and adjusting to a new educational system. Despite these obstacles, my success in this academic journey embraces vital life milestones that have been fueled by my passion for education and a sense of making a difference. This scholarship is not only a means to support my educational goals but also a way to honor the legacy of Grandmaster Nam K. Hyong by continuing the tradition of valuing and advancing education.
Throughout my journey as an international student, my Vietnamese heritage has played a crucial role in shaping my values and aspirations. The resilience and determination instilled in me by my family’s experiences in a war-torn country have been driving forces behind my academic and professional achievements. My background has taught me the value of perseverance and hard work, qualities that are essential for overcoming the obstacles faced by first-generation immigrants.
My commitment to education was evident from an early age. I consistently ranked among the top students in my school, which earned me a place at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted. Recognizing the importance of higher education, I pursued scholarships to alleviate my family's financial burden. This background dedication led me all the way to gaining admission at the University of Toledo in 2019, which marked the beginning of my journey in the United States. In 2020, I went to Houston, Texas, and in 2023, I transferred to the University of Houston-Downtown, majoring in Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing, with a 4.0 GPA. Some of my noted achievements include the first-place finish in the AMA Collegiate Summit Marketing Case Competition and the AAF Competition and Conference Advertising Case Competition, serving as President of the American Marketing Association, AMA - UHD Chapter.
As I continue my journey at the University of Houston-Downtown, I am eager to take on leadership roles that allow me to make a meaningful impact both on campus and beyond. The SustainaGator Program aligns perfectly with my values and career goals. By participating in this program, I will have the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals and organizations to promote sustainable practices and environmental awareness. I am excited about the prospect of working with the UHD Garden Program and Recycling Program to support waste reduction, sustainable agriculture, and eco-friendly initiatives. This experience will not only enhance my leadership skills but also enable me to contribute to the university's commitment to sustainability.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have actively sought opportunities to develop my skills and contribute to my community. During my time at Lavalion Roofing & Home Services, I led a successful marketing campaign that earned the company the "Best of the Best 2023" award. This experience not only honed my skills in digital marketing but also underscored my ability to drive impactful results through innovative strategies. My role as a Product Manager Intern at Atmus Filtration Technologies allowed me to enhance product lifecycle management and conduct in-depth competitor analysis, further solidifying my passion for product management and marketing. These experiences have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of the industry and the skills needed to excel in my future career.
In the future, I want to work as a Product Manager in a technology firm to develop innovations that will have a positive social impact. Specifically, how digital marketing can be leveraged for sustainability and social responsibility in technology firms is something that interests me personally. I hope to integrate sustainable practices and different perspectives into marketing strategies so that I can aid in making the industry more inclusive and sensitive to the environment. My ambition is not only to be successful in my profession but also to inspire others in the incorporation of values such as resilience, diversity, and sustainability.
Receiving the Grandmaster Nam K. Hyong Scholarship will provide me with the financial support needed to complete my degree and continue pursuing my career goals. It will also allow me to focus on making a positive impact through my academic and professional endeavors. This scholarship represents an investment in my future and a recognition of my dedication to overcoming challenges and striving for excellence. I am committed to using the opportunities afforded to me by this scholarship to honor the legacy of Grandmaster Hyong by contributing to the fields of marketing and product management with integrity, innovation, and a commitment to positive change.
My journey as a first-generation international student has been marked by resilience, diligence, and passion for education. My academic achievements, career aspirations, and commitment to making a positive impact reflect the values of Grandmaster Nam K. Hyong’s legacy. I will apply this scholarship to further reach for excellence while empowering me to make a meaningful change in my field and community.
Courage/Yongqi Scholarship
As a first-generation international student from Vietnam, my educational journey has been both challenging and transformative. It has not been an easy pathway to higher education, with challenges primarily related to my citizenship status that creates great financial and bureaucratic barriers. It's also been a story about a journey driven by resilience, determination, and the continuing support of family and community. This scholarship would provide a crucial support system that will sustain me in the continuation of the pursuit of dreams and in making a difference in society.
Growing up in a modest family in Vietnam, my parents always taught me that education is a way to overcome poverty. Despite all the financial odds against us, they always said that learning and working hard would take me through life. My academic journey began at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and the inspiration from peers and educators was a constant push to strive for the better. That was an important grounding of my desires to pursue further studies abroad in search of better opportunities.
Pursuing higher education in the United States was a faraway dream due to financial constraint. However, my strong will to transcend those barriers put me not at a standstill; instead, it fueled me to work indefatigably on further improving my English and saving money. These efforts were crowned with success when I received the scholarships from the University of Toledo, which allowed me to start my education in the United States in 2019. This was a real turn in my life because it opened up new pages—the continuation, hopeful but challenging.
This was both an exciting and daunting time since it entailed relocation to the U.S. The cultural differences, language barriers, and complexity of the American education system were at times overwhelming. I managed to keep a 4.0 GPA notwithstanding these odds, which was instigated by the belief that education means a way towards success personally and being in a position to positively influence society. I relocated to Houston in 2020, and in August 2023, I transferred to the University of Houston-Downtown, where I am majoring in Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing.
The most important issue I face as an international student is that of out-of-state tuition fees. Unlike some of my peers, I am not allowed to work while studying full time. I am denied federal financial aid, FAFSA, or student loans. My family and I are under immense pressure. Although I have scholarships from my university, there is a wide chasm between the funding that I receive and how much I really pay for tuition.
I had some really dark moments, moments where financial stress and weight kept me from wanting to give up. I kept my perseverance due to the values of resiliency instilled in me by my family and community. Each problem that I faced became an incentive to work more and seek out solutions. The financial constraints I have been facing these days have not only become a challenge for me but also motivation. The immense amount of pressure that the fees put on has strengthened the resolve to be successful and make the most of the opportunities availed to me.
Knowing the plight of international and first-generation students, one of the most fulfilling things in my journey was being in a position to give back. I co-founded a coaching platform known as US Study Abroad and Career Coach, where I have been offering free and low-cost coaching to various students across the board, helping in the building of applications, interview preparations, and getting into some of the most competitive colleges in the United States and internships. We did this all within six months. This was a unique initiative: trying to resolve the problem I had gone through myself as an international student—that is, how to deal with the admission procedures that were too difficult in a foreign country and not knowing anyone to turn to for inside information. Touching people's lives by sharing my experiences and offering them advice about overcoming similar obstacles so they can accomplish their educational goals and aspirations has been very special to me.
Furthermore, we organized a podcast series on YouTube and Spotify where professionals from underprivileged and international backgrounds who turned out to be successful share their stories and the lessons learned. This gave not only valued insight but also built up a community to support one another. It showed that with the right guidance and perseverance, everyone can overcome obstacles and succeed.
I want to further extend the reach of US Study Abroad and Career Coach by mentoring and providing resources to many more students around the globe. Collaborations with higher education institutions and nonprofit organizations can help mentor students from underrepresented backgrounds, creating a support network that equips them with the tools and opportunities necessary for their success. I plan to promote scholarship programs and workshops that will empower these students even more and help remove the financial barrier that exists in education.
Asking for help has been a humbling experience, teaching me the value of empathy and the importance of community and solidarity. This support has been instrumental in my journey, reinforcing my commitment to giving back. Looking ahead, I am determined to use my education to drive positive change both locally and globally. By leading brands that prioritize social responsibility and creating opportunities for underserved communities, I aspire to be at the forefront of this movement. This scholarship would ease my financial burden and empower me to continue striving for excellence, making a meaningful impact on my community and beyond.
Rossi and Ferguson Memorial Scholarship
At the dawn, her towering figure stood at the threshold of a great adventure. At last, here was the long-awaited day. She was to travel around the world from her homeland, Vietnam, to the cold city of Toledo, Ohio, United States for her education. It had been a journey for which she had been planning meticulously for months. With her bags packed and her heart full of excitement, she took a big breath and thought, "What could go wrong?"
As she boarded the plane, excitement was rife. The initial hours were heavenly, as the possibility of newer experiences presented freedom. Soon, her first hitch came in the way. Her connecting flight had been delayed indefinitely, throwing her meticulously drawn-up schedule haywire. Unfazed, she found a corner in the airport and pulled out the book, chuckling over this minor setback. "A delay is just a longer anticipation for the adventure," she thought.
Hours later, finally landing in Toledo, she found out that the airline had misplaced her luggage. Baggageless in a strange city, all alone, her heart was racing. She then came to the customer service desk of the airline and was promised that her bags would be delivered the next day. As she left the airport with nothing but her carry-on, what happened earlier made her laugh. "What could go wrong?" she thought, realizing the irony of her earlier thoughts.
Her first few weeks in Toledo became a series of unexpected happenings. That winter was merciless, nothing like she had ever known, the cold cutting through her layers of clothing. This dorm room that she had pictured as her warm haven turned out to be no different from a cold storage room. She found it quite difficult to adjust to the education system, which was totally new to her; the language barrier added another level of challenge. There came a time when she started to ask herself if she had made the right decision. But she persevered, driven by the scholarship that she so rightfully earned.
She handled all the challenges that came along her way during the semester with strength and humor. Another major academic obstacle was placed on her path one day. A crucial paper to which she had put in so many hours of effort got lost because of a computer crash, for which she had no backup, and she had to start over again. The sleepless nights involved in rewriting her work paid off as she found new depth in her research and writing in the process.
The first winter in Toledo was the harshest. She could not bear the bitter cold, the snow piling high, and howling through the night. She used to question her wisdom of coming abroad for studies; she doubted herself in the face of relentless challenges. But as spring approached, she found solace in small victories—a good grade, a kind word from a professor, the camaraderie of new friends.
She transferred to Houston Community College in 2020, looking to escape harsh winters and reduce tuition costs. Indeed, the warm climate of Houston did stand in stark contrast to the biting Ohio winter; she began to feel rejuvenated again with revived hope. Her move to Houston brought many new challenges and opportunities together. She worked hard—studying and holding part-time jobs—to fully make use of her time in this new city.
In 2023, she transferred to the University of Houston-Downtown. At the university, she excelled academically, was able to maintain her GPA of 4.0, and secured internships in top companies. She was elected President of the American Marketing Association at UHD. She led an initiative and empowered other students who shared an interest in marketing. By doing so, she would prove with every victory that nothing could ever stop her.
She reflected that "What could go wrong?" wasn't a question of fear; it was one of curiosity—to the unknown, to finding joy in the surprising, and learning to grow from challenges. She had not turned out the perfect journey abroad as she had envisioned, but it was hers nevertheless. Each wrong turn she took, every obstacle surmounted, added a dimension to her experience.
By the end, what had gone wrong had led her to discover what is truly right—the courage to do the unknown, the strength to surmount the obstacles, and the joy of living fully in the moment. And in settling into the routine of Houston, with a view toward whatever new adventures lay ahead, there was nothing but a smile—having learned that, no matter the question, "What could go wrong?", she'd always find her way to what could go wonderfully right.
It wasn't about a student, period; it was about me, an adventurer who dared to ask, "What could go wrong?" and found the answer to be quite often leading to the most incredible experiences. This mindset enabled me to look at new horizons and realize that embracing the unknown sometimes allows a person to find out what actually goes wonderfully right.
Kirk I. Woods Memorial Scholarship
For me, a first-generation college student from Vietnam, the pursuit of higher education has not only been a personal aspiration but also one of great regard toward family sacrifices and aspirations. Having grown up poor, my parents taught me that the way to create opportunities and have a better life is through education. Their support has been that solid base, fueling my strong commitment to be excellent in academics. For me, this scholarship means more than a source of funding; to me, it is a shot in the dark that shall help me stay the course on this highly transformative path.
It began by the acceptance into Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, located in Vietnam, a place that taught me how to turn my blood into sweat. Overcoming financial and logistical complications, I moved on to study in the United States, a place of boundless educational opportunities with extraordinary cultural diversity.
In 2020, I moved to Houston, and then in August of 2023, I was transferred to the University of Houston-Downtown, where I pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. I maintain a 4.0 GPA because one of my core drives is the belief that education is a means to achieve personal success, which leads to positively impacting society.
Being an international student, among the top challenges faced by me is definitely a financial cost associated with the out-of-state tuition fees. Unlike many of my fellows, I do not have the advantage of federal financial aid through FAFSA or student loans, nor am I allowed to work while studying full-time.
Not only have the financial difficulties been challenges for me, but they have also become the motivation. The immense amount of financial pressure further fuels my determination to succeed, and to make the most out of the opportunities that come on my way. My education has been life-changing, from a poor family background in Vietnam to a place where I can realize dreams that sometimes sound impossible. Education took me to a new land called the United States of America, a place my family and I never imagined I would one day fly to, let alone reside and study here.
Education has made me experience a new life, meet new people, and intern at very esteemed companies. These days at Google and Atmus Filtration Technologies were of great exposure to experiences and skills that otherwise I would not have gained in my life. These opportunities turned out really instrumental in shaping my career aspirations and learning the impression of working hard with perseverance.
Looking forward, education is going to shift my pathway forward by giving me the skills and facts needed to lead, innovate, and guide the pathway forward. As a future marketing professional, I am more inclined to put my abilities to work for social causes and sustainable business practices. I want to be that marketer who drives business success with positive social impact in leading marketing campaigns.
Moreover, I am dedicated to the cause of giving back by supporting and mentoring first-generation and international students. Sharing experiences and guiding others empowers people to act against the barriers I have faced in my life. I also aim to execute a well-built platform to connect international students with their mentors, qualified scholarships, internships, and grants.
The Kirk I. Woods Scholarship would be a life-changing support system for me by taking off the extremely overwhelming burden of financial barriers so that I may really focus on my studies and extracurricular activities without constantly being stressed over financial insecurity.
Dreamers Scholarship
As a first-generation international student from Vietnam, my educational journey has been a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the unwavering support of my community. I was born into a family that values education very highly. Since an early age, I have been instilled with the fact that knowledge is power; it is the way forward to rise in life and towards betterment for the people surrounding me. This belief has motivated me towards academic excellence and empowered me with the urge to grasp opportunities through which I can contribute positively to society. However, the challenges for an international student in the United States are a bit different, particularly on the basis of financial stability.
I came to the United States in 2019, motivated by the ideals of higher education and fueled by a great desire to make a difference in my society. The transition was not easy because I had cultural and linguistic barriers and how to get through a new educational system. I was determined to get through, amidst all the odds. My efforts paid off when I was admitted to the University of Houston-Downtown, where I currently study for my Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA since and have always worked hard to excel academically, for it is an opportunity that was not brought forth without purpose.
The biggest challenge that I experience being an international student is the financial struggle with out-of-state tuition fees. My peers, unlike me, have access to federal financial aid, FAFSA, or student loans. Also, I am not allowed to work while studying full-time. It has put immense pressure on my family and me financially. Despite having university scholarships, there exists a yawning chasm between what I am funded for and the real cost of tuition.
My background has been a leading influence on my academic journey. Being raised in Vietnam surrounded me with a community driven by the power of education as an agent of social change. My family, peers, and teachers inspired me to reach as high as possible and dream big. Moving to the United States, I had these values in my heart and was determined to succeed against any odds.
At the University of Houston-Downtown, I have been involved with many organizations, including the American Marketing Association, where I currently hold the position of President of the chapter. It is very fulfilling to lead such initiatives that will empower students and help resolve community needs. For example, I co-founded the platform US Study Abroad and Career Coach, which provides free and low-cost coaching to students from diverse backgrounds on how to apply to colleges for the achievement of set educational goals.
Looking ahead, I want my education to be strengthened in such a way that it has a positive impact not just locally but globally. I wish to help lead marketing campaigns that drive social causes and implement business with a sustainable approach. Furthermore, I am planning to develop my previous non-profit organization US Study Abroad and Career Coach for more students by providing resources so that financial barriers do not become an obstacle in the fulfillment of dreams.
This scholarship would mean a world of difference to me. This funding would lighten the financial burden on me tremendously, enabling me to focus entirely on my studies and other extra-curricular activities without the constant stress that comes with bad financial conditions. It would help me in continuing my further education with a clear head and set heart, knowing I have support to achieve my academic and professional goals.
Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
Priscilla Shireen Luke inspired hope in her family, friends, and the world at large during her life. Her selfless devotion as a legacy motivates me and many others to strive for a better society. As a first-generation international college student from Vietnam, I have been instilled with community service values, dedicating my life to giving back locally and globally. This scholarship in memory of Priscilla Shireen Luke's life of service is a humbling opportunity for me to reflect on my journey thus far and to share my vision for future contributions.
My Vietnamese community gave me a deep sense of responsibility to assist others while I was growing up. My first meaningful volunteer work was with a neighborhood group that gave underprivileged kids free tutoring. I was able to have a direct influence on adolescents in this capacity by encouraging them to follow their aspirations despite financial difficulties and by supporting them academically. My desire to serve was strengthened by the happiness and appreciation I saw in their eyes, which was evidence of the effectiveness of giving back.
I kept up my community service commitment when I relocated to the US for my undergraduate studies. I became actively involved with the American Marketing Association (AMA) at the University of Houston-Downtown. I coordinated activities that empowered students and responded to local needs while serving as the AMA chapter president. One noteworthy project was creating a marketing effort to increase awareness of local environmental concerns and inviting local successful professionals to be speakers. This initiative showed the real results of our work by educating the community, inspiring Marketing students and promoting sustainable behaviors.
In addition, I co-founded US Study Abroad and Career Coach to provide students from a variety of backgrounds free or inexpensive tutoring. We helped five students in six months to improve their applications, practice interviews, and land internships and complicated U.S. college admissions. Because it addressed challenges like navigating complex admissions procedures and lacking insider knowledge, this project held special significance for me as an international student. By sharing my experiences and providing guidance, I helped others overcome similar barriers and achieve their educational goals.
Furthermore, we launched a podcast series featured on platforms like YouTube and Spotify, where successful professionals from underprivileged and international backgrounds share their stories and advice. This initiative not only provided valuable insights but also created a sense of community and support among listeners. It showed that with the right guidance and perseverance, anyone can overcome obstacles and succeed.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue my commitment to service by leveraging my education and skills to make a broader impact. My vision is to lead brands that prioritize social responsibility and contribute to societal well-being. Specifically, I aim to develop marketing campaigns that promote social causes, implement sustainable business practices, and create opportunities for underserved communities. I believe that businesses have the power to drive positive change, and I aspire to be at the forefront of this movement.
My ongoing commitment to service has had a significant influence on my experience as a first-generation international student. Motivated by the legacy of Priscilla Shireen Luke, I have committed myself to influencing people and giving back to my community. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to increase my influence and continue to study more, making a better world for the coming generations. I want to use my work to pay tribute to Priscilla and encourage others to uphold the virtues of selflessness and service.
Vietnamese Student of Excellence Scholarship
As a first-generation international college student from Vietnam, my journey has a close connection to my Vietnamese roots. My cultural background has shaped who I am and has played a key role in my ability to overcome challenges and excel in my studies in the United States.
I grew up in a modest home in Vietnam where my family taught me the value of working hard and never giving up. In Vietnam, people see education as more than just a way to get a job; they view it as crucial to personal honor and carrying on family traditions. This outlook pushed me to study hard, which led to big wins like getting into Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted—a top school known to educate some of the city’s highest academic-performing students.
Growing up Vietnamese taught me to be resourceful and rely on my community, which helped a lot when I had to get used to studying in a different country. This change meant I needed to learn a new language and figure out what teachers expected from me. The Vietnamese idea of 'tinh thần tự lực, tự cường' (being self-reliant and tough) had a big impact on how I handled these problems. It pushed me to take charge of my own learning and look for ways to improve myself.
When I got to Toledo Ohio, to study at the University of Toledo, I faced a big change in culture and weather during my first tough winter. Still, the Vietnamese way of staying calm and steady when things get hard helped me adjust to this new place. I worked hard to keep my grades up and join in campus activities just like how Vietnamese people value being part of their community and doing well in school.
Moreover, my background has made my interactions with other students from different places even better. Telling others about my culture has led to good conversations and let me bring a different view to class discussions in courses about world issues and different cultures.
My academic and professional experiences thus far reflect the impact of my Vietnamese heritage on my success. In 2020, I transferred to Houston TX. At the University of Houston-Downtown, I maintain a 4.0 GPA while actively participating in leadership roles such as President of the American Marketing Association (AMA) - UHD Chapter. My achievements include winning first place in both the AMA Collegiate Summit Marketing Case Competition and the AAF Competition and Conference Advertising Case Competition. These achievements not only show my commitment to excellence but also my work ethic and strategic thinking that my heritage has grown in me. I also earned certificates and internships related to my major, which proves my dedication to continuous learning and growth.
This scholarship matters a lot because it recognizes the financial constraints that come with being a student from another country far from home, compounded by the high costs associated with out-of-state tuition. Financial support through this scholarship would not only relieve these burdens but also honor the efforts and sacrifices made by my family back in Vietnam. It would reinforce the values they instilled in me and help pave the way for me to complete my bachelor's degree, thus fulfilling our shared dream.
By supporting my academic journey, this scholarship will enable me to continue highlighting the strengths of my Vietnamese heritage while pursuing my goals in the educational and professional aspects. It shows the lasting strength of my culture and gives me hope to reach my goals and help both my new community in the U.S. and my home country.

When it comes to entertainment, my bookshelf would be incomplete without classic literature and the romantic novels of Nicholas Sparks. Neal Hartl Memorial Sales/Marketing Scholarship
As a rising senior majoring in Marketing at the University of Houston-Downtown, my journey to this field has been anything but linear. My path has been shaped by exploration, self-discovery, and the courage to follow my passion despite initial uncertainty. Growing up in Vietnam, I attended one of the top high schools for the gifted, excelling in both natural and social sciences. This versatility made it challenging to choose a clear career path. I got admitted to a prestigious medical school in my home country after high school graduation, a choice influenced by societal expectations and my parents' hopes for me to become a pharmacist or doctor.
Despite achieving good grades in medical school, something just did not feel right - I found myself unfulfilled. The passion I hoped to feel for my studies was missing, prompting me to reconsider my career aspirations. Seeking a new direction, I decided to study abroad in the United States, majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Again, I excelled academically but still lacked the sense of purpose I craved. I faced much opposition from my family, friends and even self-doubt when I changed my majors twice. It was a tough time for me. It wasn't until I took on a part-time on-campus job in marketing that everything changed. This experience opened my eyes to a field that combined creativity, strategy, and the ability to connect with people—an ideal fit for my skills and interests.
My decision to pursue a major in Marketing was validated through a series of rewarding experiences and achievements. At the University of Houston-Downtown, I maintained a perfect GPA of 4.0 and earned scholarships from both the American Marketing Association (AMA) and the American Advertising Federation (AAF).
Winning first place in the AMA Collegiate Summit Marketing Case Competition and the AAF Competition and Conference Advertising Case Competition were significant milestones. These achievements demonstrated my ability to develop impactful campaigns and think strategically under pressure. Leading the AMA chapter at UHD as President has also been a transformative experience, allowing me to foster collaboration, lead events, and empower my peers in the dynamic field of marketing.
During my internship as a Product Manager at Atmus Filtration Technologies, I improve obsolescence lifecycle management, identify process gaps, and recommend enhancements for streamlined operations. 1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
As 2023 unfolded, it felt like the soundtrack of my life was composed by Taylor Swift, particularly through the songs from "1989 (Taylor's Version)." This album has not only provided a musical backdrop but also resonated deeply with my personal experiences and emotions. Two songs that stand out in capturing the essence of my year so far are "Clean" and "Shake It Off."
"Clean" has been a meaningful song for me, symbolizing the sense of renewal and growth I've experienced. Earlier this year, I went through a period of big changes, including the end of a long-term friendship that had become unhealthy. Letting go was incredibly difficult, and I felt as though I was navigating a dry spell in my life, lacking the emotional support I once relied on. However, just like in the song, there came a moment of clarity—a rainstorm that washed away the remnants of my past struggles and allowed me to breathe freely again. This song mirrors my journey towards healing and self-discovery, reminding me that personal growth often comes from enduring and overcoming the toughest challenges.
On the flip side, "Shake It Off" has been my go-to anthem for embracing positivity and resilience in the face of adversity. This year, I faced several setbacks, particularly in my academic endeavors, where I struggled to balance my coursework and personal life. There were moments of self-doubt and external criticism that made me question my abilities. However, "Shake It Off" served as a powerful reminder to stay true to myself and not let negativity define my path. The song's carefree spirit encouraged me to focus on what I can control and let go of the rest. It has helped me maintain my mental well-being by reinforcing the importance of resilience and self-confidence.
Both songs, though contrasting in tone, have provided a balanced perspective on dealing with life's ups and downs. "Clean" has offered me a reflective space to acknowledge and heal from past wounds, while "Shake It Off" has motivated me to maintain a resilient and optimistic outlook. Together, they encapsulate the duality of my year—a mix of introspection and exuberance, of letting go and moving forward.
Moreover, the release of "1989 (Taylor's Version)" itself has been an inspiration. Taylor Swift's journey of reclaiming her music rights and re-recording her albums is a powerful testament to the importance of owning one's narrative and standing up for what is right. This has resonated with me deeply, reinforcing the idea that perseverance and self-advocacy are essential in all aspects of life.
"Clean" and "Shake It Off" from "1989 (Taylor's Version)" have been the defining songs of my 2023. They have provided a soundtrack to my experiences, offering both solace and motivation. Through their melodies and themes, Taylor Swift has once again managed to capture the complexities of personal growth and resilience, making her music not just an auditory pleasure, but a source of profound emotional support and inspiration.
Zendaya Superfan Scholarship
Zendaya, with her remarkable versatility, has captured the hearts of millions through her various roles in acting, fashion, singing, and activism. While each aspect of her career is commendable, the facet I admire most is her activism. Zendaya uses her platform to advocate for important social issues, making a significant impact beyond her on-screen performances.
From a young age, Zendaya has been vocal about the importance of representation and diversity in Hollywood. She understands that her visibility as a Black woman in the entertainment industry can inspire and empower others who look like her. Her advocacy for diversity is not limited to mere words; she has actively sought out roles that challenge stereotypes and showcase the depth and complexity of Black characters. For instance, her portrayal of Rue Bennett in "Euphoria" is a groundbreaking performance that brings attention to issues of addiction and mental health, particularly within the context of a young Black woman’s experience.
Zendaya’s activism extends beyond her professional work. She consistently uses her social media platforms to speak out against racial injustice, gender inequality, and other pressing social issues. During the Black Lives Matter protests, she was a prominent voice, using her influence to educate her followers and encourage them to take action. Her posts are not only informative but also serve as a call to action, urging her fans to participate in the fight for justice.
Moreover, Zendaya is committed to uplifting other women of color. In fashion, she often collaborates with Black designers and artists, bringing their work into the spotlight. Her choice to have her own wax figure at Madame Tussauds styled by a Black stylist is just one example of how she leverages her status to support and promote Black talent.
Her activism also includes advocating for body positivity and self-acceptance. Zendaya has been open about the pressures of conforming to Hollywood’s beauty standards and has used her platform to promote a more inclusive definition of beauty. She encourages her followers to embrace their natural selves and challenges the industry to be more accepting of diverse body types.
Zendaya’s activism is deeply personal and authentic, making her a role model for many, including myself. She demonstrates that being a celebrity comes with a responsibility to advocate for change and to use one’s platform for the greater good. Her dedication to social justice, coupled with her ability to inspire action, sets her apart as more than just an entertainer; she is a true agent of change.
While Zendaya’s talents in acting, fashion, and singing are indeed impressive, it is her activism that I admire the most. Her commitment to using her influence to promote diversity, equality, and social justice is both inspiring and impactful. Zendaya’s activism exemplifies the power of using one’s platform to effect positive change in the world, and it is this aspect of her multifaceted career that I find most admirable.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I have loved math since I was young and could do basic calculations when I was just four years old. As a Vietnamese student, growing up in an Asian community where math skills are highly valued and nurtured from an early age, I have developed an appreciation for the subject. My passion for math is evident in my academic journey, where I consistently achieved high grades in both math and natural sciences, as well as social sciences.
One of the reasons I love math is its universal applicability. It is a language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, providing a foundation for understanding and innovation in numerous fields. Math teaches critical skills such as problem-solving and logical thinking, which are invaluable in everyday life. These skills have been instrumental in my academic success and continue to influence my approach to challenges. Additionally, math has taught me the importance of patience and persistence, as solving complex problems often requires time and careful consideration.
Math's role in advancements in technology, economics, and business cannot be overstated. As someone now pursuing a major in Marketing, I recognize how integral math is to my field. Marketing relies heavily on data analysis, statistical models, and predictive analytics—all of which are grounded in mathematical principles. Understanding consumer behavior, optimizing campaigns, and measuring performance are tasks that require a solid grasp of math.
In marketing, math allows us to make informed decisions based on data rather than intuition. This data-driven approach ensures that strategies are effective and resources are used efficiently. For instance, analyzing trends, calculating return on investment (ROI), and segmenting markets are all tasks that depend on mathematical skills. Even the creative aspects of marketing, such as designing A/B tests and personalizing customer experiences, are enhanced by a strong foundation in math.
Beyond its practical applications, I love math for its beauty and elegance. There is a unique satisfaction in solving a complex problem and arriving at a clear, definitive answer. This structured thinking is something I apply not just in academics, but in everyday decisions and problem-solving.
My love for math stems from its universal relevance, the critical skills it imparts, and its essential role in various fields, including my chosen career in marketing. Math has shaped my academic journey and continues to influence my professional aspirations.

Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
As an international student hailing from Vietnam, I embarked on a life-changing journey in 2019 when I boarded a plane bound for the United States. This journey represented not only my first foray into higher education but also a profound leap into the unknown, away from my financially disadvantaged family in Vietnam.
In my homeland, the prospect of pursuing higher education seemed like an unattainable dream. My father, now aging, had tirelessly worked as a security guard at a local college, and my mother, equally aging, earned a modest living as a street-shop sales assistant. Our family led a humble life, and their advanced age, coupled with the economic aftershocks of COVID-19, meant they were constantly at risk of layoffs, particularly as lower-class Baby Boomer workers. It was these harsh realities that fueled my motivation to try hard every day in the US.
Throughout my formative years, I consistently ranked among the top students, driven by a burning desire to secure scholarships that would alleviate the financial strain on my family. This dedication led me to gain acceptance into Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, where I honed my skills and laid the groundwork for future academic endeavors.
Despite my initial intention to pursue higher education abroad immediately after high school, I recognized the practical realities of my family's financial situation. Thus, I embarked on a two-year journey into the workforce. During this time, I diligently worked to save money, devoted countless hours to preparing for standardized tests, and honed my English proficiency. My efforts eventually bore fruit when the University of Toledo acknowledged my unwavering dedication and rewarded me with scholarships that significantly eased the financial burden of my tuition fees.
In 2019, I took the leap and seized the opportunity to pursue higher education in the United States. That plane ride represented not only my first experience flying but also the realization of my dreams as a first-generation college student. I knew that this journey would not be without its unique challenges, but I was determined to overcome them.
My story embodies the spirit of ambition and resilience that many immigrants bring to the United States. I am immensely proud to represent not only my family's dreams but also the aspirations of countless other first-generation immigrant students. We share a common desire to create a better life for ourselves, our families, and our communities through education.
The Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship holds the promise of a brighter future for immigrant students like me. It recognizes our determination, our unique challenges, and our potential to make a positive impact in this country. As an applicant for this scholarship, I am committed to using this opportunity to further my education and contribute to a better future not only for myself but also for those who believe in the power of dreams and hard work.
I am constantly reminded of the sacrifices my parents have made, and I remember them saying when they dropped me off at the airport: "We may never know what the US looks like, but we believe the education there is a good environment for you, Nhu. We have willingly sacrificed our own dreams so that you can achieve yours", and I am often moved to tears when I reflect on their selflessness and unwavering support. I am immensely grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, and I am excited to continue pursuing my dreams with the support of the Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship. Together, we can shape a brighter future for immigrant students across this nation.
Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
From the earliest stages of my life, books have held the power to shape my thoughts, influence my beliefs, and provide solace in times of need. These diverse books have not only enriched my understanding of various subjects but have profoundly influenced the trajectory of my goals. As I transitioned from the enchanting realms of childhood tales to the thought-provoking narratives of adulthood, my aspirations evolved. I am reminded that books are not just repositories of knowledge; they are companions that accompany me on my quest for understanding, guide me through challenges, and infuse my life with wisdom and inspiration.
As a child, I found enchantment within the pages of "The Little Match Girl," a poignant literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, and "The Tale of the Fisherman and the Fish" by Alexander Pushkin, a mesmerizing fairy tale in verse. These stories ignited my imagination and introduced me to the magic of storytelling, imprinting a lifelong love for literature.
In my secondary school years, a single tale left an indelible mark on me – "The Last Leaf" by O. Henry. This poignant narrative of friendship, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit resonated deeply with me. It was during this time that I began to realize the profound emotional impact that words could wield, connecting me with characters' journeys and expanding my understanding of the human experience.

"Never Eat Alone" and "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie were two pivotal titles that not only provided me with valuable networking skills but also imparted essential life lessons on empathy, communication, and relationship-building.
With my focus shifting towards my major in BBA Marketing, my literary journey became more aligned with my academic pursuits. "Swipe to Unlock," a book at the intersection of technology and marketing, captured my interest. Its exploration of the digital landscape, user behavior, and the art of engagement illuminated the evolving dynamics of modern marketing. Through this book, I not only gained valuable insights into my chosen field but also discovered the synergy between my academic interests and my personal growth.
Throughout these stages of my life, books have been steadfast companions, shaping me into the person I am today. They have been more than sources of knowledge; they have been healers during moments of sadness, sources of inspiration during challenges, and bridges to different worlds when I sought an escape. The stories of the Little Match Girl's resilience, the Fisherman's wishes, the courage displayed in "The Last Leaf," the interpersonal wisdom from Carnegie, and the modern marketing insights of "Swipe to Unlock" have collectively contributed to my growth as an individual.
Books have become beacons, guiding me towards a multifaceted goal: to acquire knowledge in my field, refine my interpersonal skills, foster empathy, cultivate wisdom, and embark on a journey of self-discovery. The journey of an immigrant is an uphill battle, particularly for someone who steps into the world of higher education in a foreign land. As a first-generation international college student from Vietnam, I understand intimately the uphill battles that accompany pursuing education abroad. From language barriers to complex paperwork and the absence of a familial safety net, our obstacles appear to be distinct from those faced by our domestic peers. Among the hurdles we confront, the weight of international student tuition looms large, potentially impeding our aspirations for education and a brighter future.
Originating from a financially modest family in Vietnam, higher education initially seemed like an unattainable dream. However, I recognized the intrinsic value of education and committed myself to academic excellence. Through years of diligent effort, I consistently ranked among the top students, striving to secure scholarships that could alleviate the financial strain on my family. My dedication reached a pinnacle when I gained acceptance to Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted. This period honed my skills and laid the groundwork for my future endeavors.
I have approached the unique challenges of being a first-time overseas student. From the initial experience of continuous delays on my first airplane journey to the States, signifying the beginning of a challenging chapter in my life, to navigating the paperwork and overcoming language barriers as a student with a Vietnamese accent, each step has required adaptability and perseverance. Additionally, I still remember vividly the unfamiliarity of facing my first frigid winter in Toledo, which proved to be an unexpected challenge despite my efforts to prepare with warm clothing from my tropical homeland. Nonetheless, I have committed myself to practicing English everyday, successfully navigating the complicated processes of immigration documentation, and gradually building a network within the educational community. It is worth emphasizing that I embarked on this journey independently, without the presence of family members or relatives in the United States, relying solely on my resourcefulness to navigate each step along the way.
This journey has cultivated a profound appreciation for diverse perspectives and an increased cultural sensitivity. Interacting with individuals from various backgrounds and embracing many customs has broadened my horizons, fostering an enduring commitment to embracing diversity and forging meaningful connections across cultures. The fusion of modern technology acquired from Western world and the preservation of my traditional Eastern heritage have played an important role in my personal growth and cross-cultural understanding.

If awarded the scholarship, I would endeavor to use my story as an inspiration to others, particularly young women from backgrounds like mine, who might otherwise be deterred by the enormity of the journey.
The Barbara J. DeVaney scholarship stands as an embodiment of hope for individuals who confront the formidable challenges of being pioneers in their families and navigating the complexities of international education. The scholarship's resonance with my journey and aspirations is profound. In 2019, I seized the opportunity to pursue my education in the United States, marking not only my first experience on an airplane but also my first step toward fulfilling my dreams as a first-generation college student.
Some questioned my decision to transfer to Houston Community College in 2020. However, I understood the potential advantages of this change. I could save money, participate in community initiatives and my own project, undertake extensive job market research, and explore my personal and professional growth by attending a community college. I am a staunch believer that individual efforts, rather than specialized institutions, create achievement. Regardless of what others said, I trusted my intuition, and this decision proved to be transforming, offering vital experiences and preparing me for future challenges.
With hard work and determination, I earned an Associate of Arts degree from Houston Community College. Building on my academic achievements, I embraced real-world opportunities to develop my marketing skills. I began my career as a marketing professional at Lavalion Roofing & Home Services and afterward worked as a Content Reviewer at Google via Vaco, specifically on the Google Ads project. Within a short period, my hard work and dedication led to a promotion. The challenges I faced during this journey, particularly amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, tested my resilience and commitment.
In addition, I have overcome personal health issues that have shaped my perspective and determination. Although I have been fortunate to remain healthy and not endure a battle with cancer like Maggie did, I have carried the burden of concern and consideration from my family and friends since childhood. Various illnesses with an HP infection in stomach have led to malnourishment and a persistently low weight. However, I refuse to view these health challenges as hindrances or excuses. Instead, I draw strength from these experiences, propelling myself forward and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead. My determination remains resolute, as I recognize that my health journey has fortified my character and taught me resilience.
As I reflect upon the challenges I have faced and overcome, Maggie's bravery and perseverance in the face of her own health battle come to mind. While our circumstances may differ, our shared resilience, boldness, and dedication to our goals unite our stories. I have remained steadfast in my commitment to academic excellence and personal growth. I am committed to making the most of my educational opportunities, embracing the support provided by this scholarship, and striving to become an expert in my field, just as Maggie did in her engineering career.
Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
The ‘1989’ album by Taylor Swift is renowned for its captivating melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and Taylor Swift’s exceptional musical talent. Among the array of remarkable tracks on this album, one particular song that holds a special place in my heart is "Wildest Dreams." When I first listened to the song, tears welled up in my eyes, cascading down my cheeks, as if the song had unlocked a hidden reservoir of feelings within me. In that instant, memories long tucked away resurfaced with an intensity that felt like the most poignant scenes from a beautifully crafted movie.
"Wildest Dreams" has served as a poignant reminder of a past love story that unfolded during my high school years. Back then, I had the privilege of experiencing my first love, embarking on a journey of companionship and romance with an individual who would become my first boyfriend. As a naturally introverted individual, he stood as my sole confidant and closest friend. Day after day, my affection for him deepened, evoking emotions that transcended the boundaries of reality. However, like a fleeting mirage, this love affair resembled a wildest dream—ephemeral and ethereal.
The duration of our relationship proved to be short-lived, concluding abruptly. He bid farewell, confessing that his love for me had waned. Since that moment in 2017, our paths have diverged, leading us to separate lives in distinct countries. Currently residing in the United States, I am left yearning for the memory of our past connection. Mirroring the sentiments conveyed in the song, I fervently wish that he retains some recollection of me.
“Say you'll remember me
Standing in a nice dress
Staring at the sunset, babe
Red lips and rosy cheeks
Say you'll see me again
Even if it's just pretend”
Although separated by time, distance, and divergent lives, he lingers within the recesses of my subconscious, an indelible presence that eludes erasure. In the realm of dreams, he occasionally resurfaces, each detail reminiscent of the bygone days we once shared.
