Books have been my steadfast companions on a journey of self-discovery, shaping my aspirations and illuminating the path I wish to tread. In the realm of literature, I have found a trifecta of genres—classic gothic, queer literature, and black literature—that have profoundly influenced my understanding of the human experience and have woven a tapestry of inspiration for my future endeavors. Classic gothic literature, with its haunting atmospheres and intricate narratives, has been an unexpected but invaluable guide in shaping my own writing style. As I immersed myself in the works of gothic luminaries like Mary Shelley and Edgar Allan Poe, I was enraptured by their ability to evoke visceral emotions and create richly detailed settings. This exposure has significantly honed my creative expression, teaching me the art of crafting atmospheres that resonate with readers' emotions. By harnessing the power of darkness and light, life and death, I have learned to infuse symbolism and depth into my storytelling, which I aim to carry forward into my literary pursuits. In the realm of queer literature, I discovered a treasure trove of voices that echoed the struggles and triumphs of a marginalized community. Exploring the writings of Audre Lorde, James Baldwin, and other queer authors has been a revelatory experience, providing me with insights into diverse perspectives and fostering empathy. These stories of self-discovery, resilience, and the fight for acceptance have fueled my passion for advocacy. They have ignited a fervent desire to leverage my future career to amplify LGBTQ+ narratives, advocate for equality, and contribute to a more inclusive society. Delving into black literature has been a transformative exploration of identity, history, and societal dynamics. Authors like Toni Morrison and Langston Hughes have illuminated the complexities of the black experience, prompting me to critically examine systemic inequalities. These narratives have compelled me to envision a future where I can play an active role in challenging existing structures of oppression, amplifying underrepresented voices, and contributing to meaningful societal change. As I chart my course toward the future, the lessons and inspirations drawn from classic gothic, queer, and black literature serve as guiding stars. These genres, seemingly disparate, have converged to form a constellation of values and aspirations that illuminate my path. I am driven by the desire to weave narratives that resonate deeply with readers, to champion LGBTQ+ rights and representation, and to address issues of social justice. By combining the evocative power of gothic storytelling, the advocacy spirit of queer literature, and the transformative insights of black literature, I am poised to craft a future where storytelling and activism harmoniously coexist, fostering empathy, understanding, and positive change.

My background is deeply intertwined with resilience and a commitment to supporting both my family and my community. My mother’s journey as a refugee, coupled with her personal challenges, has profoundly shaped my perspective and actions. Disowned by her father when she became pregnant with me, my mother faced immense hardship and uncertainty. Despite these challenges, she demonstrated remarkable strength and determination, providing me with a powerful example of perseverance and dedication. Growing up, I actively contributed to my family in various ways. As a child of a single parent, I took on significant responsibilities at home. I assisted with household duties, supported my younger siblings, and became a source of emotional strength for my mother. These experiences taught me the importance of family support and instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility and empathy. In addition to my contributions at home, I have been actively involved in my community. Throughout high school, I volunteered with local organizations that focus on providing resources and support to underserved populations. I participated in tutoring programs for underprivileged students, offering academic assistance and mentorship. This involvement allowed me to give back to my community and inspired me to pursue further opportunities to make a positive impact. Looking ahead, my commitment to community involvement will continue to be a central aspect of my life, especially after college. I plan to engage in initiatives that address educational inequities and support marginalized communities. One of my primary goals is to develop and participate in mentorship programs that provide guidance and support to young people, particularly those from backgrounds similar to mine. By sharing my experiences and offering practical advice, I hope to empower others to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Moreover, I intend to work with organizations that focus on refugee and immigrant support, leveraging my background to advocate for policies and resources that benefit these communities. My experiences have given me insight into the unique challenges faced by refugees and immigrants, and I am dedicated to using my voice and skills to promote positive change. I also plan to use my educational background and professional skills to contribute to community development projects. Whether through volunteering, advocacy, or professional work, I aim to address issues related to educational access, economic development, and social justice. My goal is to create opportunities and resources that enable individuals to thrive, regardless of their background of where the person comes from.

For much of my life, I have grappled with depression, a struggle that has deeply impacted my sense of self and my outlook on the future. My journey through depression has been marked by periods of intense emotional pain and despair, including multiple suicide attempts. These experiences have not only shaped my understanding of mental health but have also profoundly influenced my aspirations and my commitment to creating supportive environments for others who face similar challenges. From a young age, I found myself battling the silent and overwhelming darkness of depression. The weight of this mental health struggle often felt insurmountable, impacting every aspect of my life. The persistent sense of hopelessness and the constant internal battle were exacerbated by my environment, particularly my relationship with my father. His deeply religious and extremely homophobic views created an environment where I felt rejected and unsupported, especially as I began to understand and embrace my own identity. His rigidity and intolerance further intensified my feelings of isolation, making it even more challenging to seek help and express my struggles openly. The combination of my mental health challenges and my father’s unyielding beliefs created a profound sense of alienation. I felt caught between the desire to be understood and accepted and the fear of rejection and judgment. This internal conflict often led me to attempt to escape my pain through multiple suicide attempts, each one a desperate plea for relief and understanding. Despite the profound difficulties I faced, these experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of resilience and a commitment to making a difference in the realm of mental health. The journey through depression has given me a unique perspective on the importance of mental health awareness and the need for compassionate support systems. I have learned firsthand the critical need for empathetic listening, effective mental health resources, and safe spaces where individuals can find understanding and acceptance. In pursuing higher education, I am committed to focusing on mental health advocacy and support. My experiences have driven me to seek a degree in psychology or social work, with a particular interest in developing programs and interventions that address the needs of individuals struggling with mental health issues. I aim to contribute to creating environments where mental health is openly discussed, and individuals feel empowered to seek help without fear of stigma or judgment. Furthermore, my background has motivated me to advocate for LGBTQIA+ individuals who face similar challenges. Understanding the intersection of mental health struggles with issues of identity and acceptance, I am dedicated to working on initiatives that promote inclusivity and support for marginalized communities. By developing programs and support systems that address both mental health and LGBTQIA+ issues, I hope to create more compassionate and supportive spaces for those who are often overlooked or misunderstood. My experiences have also fueled my passion for educating others about mental health and fostering understanding within communities. Through public speaking, writing, and community engagement, I plan to raise awareness about the impact of mental health challenges and advocate for more comprehensive and accessible support resources.

Growing up, domestic violence and substance abuse have profoundly impacted my life and shaped my commitment to addressing these issues. My personal experiences with these challenges have instilled in me a deep empathy for those affected and a strong desire to create meaningful change, particularly for African American women who face these struggles. Domestic violence and substance abuse were present in my family, creating a tumultuous environment that affected my emotional well-being and stability. The volatility of these issues not only strained family relationships but also introduced a cycle of trauma and hardship that was challenging to break. Witnessing the direct effects of these problems—such as the emotional turmoil and financial instability they caused—has given me a profound understanding of the barriers individuals face in seeking support and recovery. These experiences have also highlighted the importance of having effective systems in place to address these issues. The lack of adequate resources and support often exacerbates the problems, making recovery and stability more difficult to achieve. This realization has been a driving force behind my commitment to improving care and support systems for those impacted by domestic violence and substance abuse. To address these issues effectively, I am pursuing higher education in social work or counseling with a focus on trauma-informed care and addiction recovery. My goal is to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to provide direct support to individuals affected by domestic violence and substance abuse, particularly African American women who may face additional barriers due to systemic inequities. One of my primary objectives is to enhance care coordination among social services, healthcare providers, and community organizations. Effective care coordination is essential for providing comprehensive support to individuals facing domestic violence and substance abuse. By working to improve communication and integration among these entities, I aim to ensure that individuals receive holistic and effective care. This approach will help bridge gaps in service delivery and create a more cohesive support network. Another crucial aspect of my plan is to engage in advocacy and policy development. I intend to work on initiatives that influence policy changes to improve access to resources and support services for victims of domestic violence and substance abuse. By advocating for policies that address systemic issues and promote equitable access to support, I hope to contribute to creating a more just and effective system for those in need. My experiences have also driven me to focus on community education and outreach. I plan to use my education and skills to raise awareness about domestic violence and substance abuse within African American communities. Through public speaking, writing, and community engagement, I aim to educate others about these issues, reduce stigma, and promote proactive measures for prevention and support. Educating communities about available resources and effective strategies for addressing these issues is crucial for fostering a supportive environment. Finally, I plan to engage in research to better understand the unique challenges faced by African American women dealing with domestic violence and substance abuse. By contributing to the development of evidence-based programs and interventions, I hope to improve the effectiveness of support services and enhance outcomes for those affected. Research will provide valuable insights into the specific needs and barriers faced by this population, guiding the creation of targeted and effective solutions.

As the child of an African immigrant, I have always felt a profound sense of responsibility to uphold the values and expectations of my heritage. My mother’s journey to provide a better life for us has been fraught with sacrifices and challenges, reinforcing the importance of hard work and determination. However, this cultural backdrop also brings with it a significant pressure not to disappoint, especially in areas as deeply personal as identity and acceptance. My father's homophobia and his absence from my life have created a complex dynamic. His beliefs and the fear of his rejection have cast a long shadow over my journey of self-discovery. Knowing that I could never turn to him for understanding or support has been a source of deep emotional pain. This has made it difficult for me to fully embrace my identity and has compounded the fear of my mother’s potential reaction. The thought of coming out to my mother is fraught with anxiety. Her strength and resilience, qualities that I admire deeply, are rooted in a cultural context that often does not readily accept LGBTQ+ identities. My fear of her reaction is compounded by the pressure not to disappoint her or bring shame to our family. The potential for misunderstanding and rejection has made it challenging to be open about who I am. Despite these fears, my mother's love and dedication have also given me hope. She has taught me the importance of empathy, understanding, and the courage to face difficult truths. While I am still on the journey to fully embrace and express my identity, I am motivated by the belief that love and understanding can transcend cultural barriers. These experiences have profoundly influenced my educational and career aspirations. I am passionate about pursuing a degree in social work or psychology, fields where I can make a meaningful impact by supporting individuals facing similar challenges. My goal is to develop programs and interventions that address the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and children of immigrants, ensuring that they have access to the resources and support they need to thrive. Furthermore, my background has driven me to focus on advocacy and policy development. I am committed to working towards creating policies that promote inclusivity and protect the rights of marginalized communities. By engaging in advocacy and policy work, I hope to contribute to a society where everyone, regardless of their background or identity, has the opportunity to succeed. My personal journey has also fueled my commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding within my community. I have learned the importance of creating safe spaces where individuals can express their identities without fear of rejection or discrimination. Through public speaking, writing, and community engagement, I aim to raise awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the importance of acceptance and support.

Ouran High School Host Club holds a special place in my heart as it was my introduction to the world of anime. This charming series, with its blend of humor, romance, and gender-bending elements, not only captivated me but also significantly influenced my understanding of gender identity and romance. As my first anime, Ouran High School Host Club was an eye-opener to the diverse storytelling and creative potential of anime. The series follows Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at an elite high school who accidentally breaks a vase worth 8 million yen and is forced to work off the debt in the school’s Host Club. Haruhi, who initially presents as a boy to pay off the debt, becomes an integral part of the club, which is composed of a group of attractive male students who entertain female clients. One of the most impactful aspects of Ouran High School Host Club is its playful and thoughtful exploration of gender identity. Haruhi’s situation, where she is mistaken for a boy and her true identity is kept secret, opens up conversations about gender roles and expectations. Throughout the series, Haruhi's experiences challenge traditional notions of gender, allowing viewers to see the fluidity and complexity of gender identity in a nuanced and humorous light. Haruhi’s ease with her gender expression, combined with the acceptance of her friends, reflects a positive and supportive portrayal of gender fluidity. The anime showcases how Haruhi navigates her identity without being confined by societal expectations, offering a refreshing perspective on gender identity. This portrayal was both affirming and educational, especially for viewers who might be exploring their own understanding of gender. The romantic elements of Ouran High School Host Club also played a significant role in shaping my views on romance. The series explores various romantic tropes and dynamics, from the slow-burn romance between Haruhi and Tamaki Suoh to the more comedic and exaggerated relationships among the other host club members. The show’s approach to romance is both lighthearted and complex, offering a range of relationship dynamics and emotional growth. One of the standout aspects of the romance in Ouran High School Host Club is its focus on genuine emotional connections rather than purely physical attraction. The characters’ relationships are built on mutual respect, understanding, and personal growth. This emphasis on meaningful connections rather than superficial romance resonated with me and influenced my perspective on what constitutes a healthy and fulfilling romantic relationship. For me, Ouran High School Host Club was more than just an entertaining anime; it was a gateway to exploring deeper themes of gender identity and romance. The series challenged conventional gender norms and provided a positive representation of gender fluidity, which was particularly impactful as it broadened my understanding of gender beyond traditional binaries. Additionally, the anime’s portrayal of romance as a multifaceted and emotionally rich experience encouraged me to think critically about relationships. It highlighted the importance of emotional depth, mutual respect, and genuine connection in romantic relationships, which has influenced my views on what makes a meaningful and fulfilling relationship. Ouran High School Host Club remains a beloved and influential series in my life. Its exploration of gender identity and romance, combined with its engaging storytelling and endearing characters, made it a memorable introduction to anime. The show’s positive portrayal of gender fluidity and its thoughtful approach to romance have left a lasting impact on my understanding of these concepts,

Chappell Roan’s music has profoundly impacted me, offering both solace and inspiration. As a lesbian, finding artists who resonate with my experiences and identity is not just comforting but essential. Roan’s career represents a beacon of hope and validation, reflecting the struggles and triumphs of navigating life as a queer individual. Roan’s music is a rich tapestry of raw emotion and unapologetic self-expression. Her lyrics delve deeply into themes of identity, love, and self-acceptance, creating a profound connection with listeners who share similar experiences. Her music spoke to my experiences in a way that felt both personal and universal, affirming that I wasn’t alone in my struggles and triumphs. This therapeutic aspect of her work can be especially meaningful for those of us navigating our own journeys of self-acceptance and discovery. Additionally, Roan’s career serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring artists within the LGBTQ+ community. Seeing someone who has faced similar challenges achieve success can be a powerful motivator. It reinforces the idea that our stories and identities are valuable and worthy of celebration. For me, the concept of military service and the dedication to protecting our country are deeply ingrained in my identity and personal values. Growing up in a family with a rich history of military service—my mother and father both served, and numerous relatives are veterans—I have been profoundly influenced by the values of duty, sacrifice, and patriotism. These familial experiences have shaped my understanding of what it means to serve and protect, and they continue to motivate me as I navigate my own path in life. From a young age, I was surrounded by stories of valor and sacrifice. My parents' military service was more than just a career choice; it was a profound commitment to something greater than themselves. They instilled in me the principles of discipline, resilience, and selflessness, which are foundational to military life. Their stories of serving in various capacities and the sacrifices they made for our nation became a source of inspiration for me. I witnessed firsthand the dedication required to serve and the personal costs associated with protecting our country, including long deployments and the challenges of balancing family life with military duties. The values imparted by my parents and extended family have profoundly influenced my motivations and aspirations. I have learned that military service is not merely a job but a profound calling to defend and uphold the principles upon which our nation is built. It requires a deep sense of responsibility, commitment, and the willingness to put the needs of others before one's own. These values resonate with me and shape my approach to life and career choices. My family's legacy of military service has also shaped my understanding of duty and sacrifice. Each veteran in my family has contributed to our nation in their own way, from combat roles to support positions. Their collective experiences have highlighted the importance of defending our values and ensuring the safety and security of our country. This understanding of service has motivated me to pursue a path that allows me to contribute meaningfully, whether through public service, advocacy, or other avenues that align with the principles of dedication and selflessness. One of the most significant motivators in my life is the desire to honor my family's legacy. I am driven by the understanding that my personal actions and career choices can contribute to the ongoing effort to protect and support our nation. This motivation is not only about continuing the family tradition of service but also about embodying the values of integrity, courage, and commitment that have been modeled for me. It inspires me to pursue opportunities that enable me to make a positive impact on the world and support causes that align with my values. Furthermore, the commitment to protect our country extends beyond military service and encompasses a broader sense of civic responsibility. My experiences have taught me the importance of engaging in activities that contribute to the betterment of society, whether through community service, advocacy, or leadership. I am motivated by the belief that everyone has a role to play in defending our nation’s values and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.

Involvement in athletics, particularly volleyball and softball, has been a transformative experience for me, teaching invaluable lessons that have shaped my character and outlook on life. Having played volleyball since middle school and recently trying softball in my senior year, I have gained insights that will guide me through the next phase of my life as I enter college. Firstly, volleyball has instilled in me the importance of discipline and hard work. Regular practices, early morning workouts, and the relentless pursuit of improvement have taught me that success is a result of consistent effort and dedication. This discipline has translated into my academic pursuits, where I approach my studies with the same level of commitment and resilience. As I enter college, I plan to carry this lesson forward by maintaining a structured routine, setting clear goals, and staying focused on both my academic and athletic growth. Secondly, being part of a volleyball team has highlighted the value of collaboration and communication. Working together towards a common goal, whether it's winning a game or achieving a team milestone, requires effective communication and a willingness to support one another. I have learned to appreciate diverse perspectives, resolve conflicts amicably, and celebrate collective achievements. In college, I will bring this collaborative spirit to group projects, extracurricular activities, and community involvement, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. I have learned to view setbacks as opportunities for growth, analyzing what went wrong and making necessary adjustments. This ability to bounce back will be crucial in college, where challenges and obstacles are inevitable. One book I highly recommend everyone read is "Giovanni's Room" by James Baldwin. This novel is a poignant exploration of themes such as identity, love, and societal expectations. It delves into the complex and often painful emotions of the protagonist, David, as he grapples with his sexuality and societal norms. "Giovanni's Room" is a powerful and beautifully written work that challenges conventions and offers a deep insight into the human experience. It's a book that encourages readers to reflect on issues of self-acceptance and the consequences of denying one's true identity, making it a compelling and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in literature that explores the complexities of human relationships and desires. At the core of my writing journey is the dedication to honing my skills and expanding my creative horizons. I believe that the written word has the power to not only entertain but also to enlighten and inspire. Through storytelling, I aim to connect with readers on a profound level, evoking emotions, provoking thought, and sparking conversations. Writing, for me, is a medium through which I can explore the intricate tapestry of human existence, and I'm committed to refining my abilities to do so effectively. While my primary focus lies in the realm of fiction, I am drawn to the limitless possibilities it offers. Fiction allows me to create worlds, characters, and narratives that can transcend time and place. It enables me to delve into the human psyche, to dissect motivations, and to weave intricate plots that mirror the complexities of real life. My goal as a writer is to master the art of storytelling, to craft tales that not only captivate but also resonate with readers from all walks of life. One of the reasons I recommend "Giovanni's Room" is because it exemplifies the power of fiction to explore the depths of human emotion and societal expectations. This novel, set in the 1950s Paris, is a compelling portrayal of a man grappling with his sexual identity, all within the confines of societal norms and personal desires. Baldwin's prose is exquisite, drawing readers into the turbulent world of the protagonist, David, and his relationship with Giovanni. It's a book that challenges preconceived notions and offers a profound examination of love, identity, and the consequences of denying one's true self. As a writer, I see books like "Giovanni's Room" as both a source of inspiration and a benchmark for what great storytelling can achieve. It demonstrates how literature has the power to illuminate the human condition, encouraging readers to reflect on their own lives and beliefs. Through my own writing, I hope to create works that, like "Giovanni's Room," leave a lasting impact on readers, sparking discussions and fostering empathy. In conclusion, my journey as a writer is a continuous quest for growth and connection. I aim to craft stories that resonate deeply with readers, much like "Giovanni's Room" has done for generations. Through fiction, I hope to explore the complexities of human existence, challenge conventions, and inspire others to reflect on their own lives. In the end, it is the power of storytelling to provoke thought, evoke emotion, and foster understanding that drives me forward on this writing journey.

If I were to invite everyone in the world to embark on a collective literary journey, there is one book that stands out as a beacon of contemplation, introspection, and profound insight—Oscar Wilde's timeless masterpiece, "The Picture of Dorian Gray." This choice, while seemingly unconventional, is rooted in the novel's ability to provoke thought, challenge societal norms, and spark crucial conversations that transcend time and cultural boundaries. "The Picture of Dorian Gray" invites readers to peer beyond the surface and delve into the depths of human nature. At its core, the novel explores themes of vanity, moral decay, and the consequences of unchecked hedonism. Through the captivating narrative of Dorian Gray's portrait reflecting his inner corruption, Wilde confronts us with the dualities that reside within each of us—our desires, choices, and the ethical dilemmas that shape our lives. In an era characterized by the constant pursuit of perfection and the allure of external validation, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of self-reflection. The book challenges us to confront the masks we wear, the impact of our actions on ourselves and others, and the delicate balance between the pursuit of pleasure and the preservation of our integrity. Furthermore, Wilde's eloquent prose and sharp wit engage readers on a profound intellectual level. The book's discussions on art, beauty, and the nature of morality prompt readers to question established norms and contemplate the essence of human existence. In a world where dialogue and critical thinking are more crucial than ever, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" offers a rich foundation for conversations that traverse cultural, societal, and philosophical landscapes. In my predominantly white and male-dominated school, I encountered several challenges and biases that threatened to hinder my progress. One particular obstacle I faced was the lack of representation and encouragement for women of color in STEM fields. I often found myself being one of the few women of color in my computer science classes, which led to feelings of isolation and self-doubt. Additionally, societal stereotypes and biases surrounding women of color in technology further compounded these challenges. To overcome this adversity, I took deliberate steps to empower myself and create opportunities for success. Firstly, I sought out mentorship from successful women of color who had established careers in the computer science industry. Through their guidance and support, I gained valuable insights into navigating the challenges I faced and discovered strategies for success. Furthermore, I actively sought out opportunities to enhance my technical skills and knowledge beyond the confines of the classroom. I participated in coding competitions, attended tech workshops, and engaged in personal projects to showcase my abilities. By actively demonstrating my passion and dedication to the field, I aimed to challenge the stereotypes and biases that had been placed upon me. In addition to personal growth, I recognized the importance of community-building and support. I joined organizations and clubs that focused on promoting diversity in STEM fields, particularly for underrepresented groups like women of color. Through these communities, I found a sense of belonging and a network of like-minded individuals who understood and shared my experiences. Together, we organized events, workshops, and mentoring programs to inspire and support other women of color who aspired to pursue careers in technology. While facing adversity, I also took it upon myself to educate and raise awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. I engaged in discussions with classmates and teachers, highlighting the benefits of diverse perspectives and challenging the stereotypes and biases that hindered progress. By advocating for inclusivity and representation, I aimed to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for future generations. Ultimately, my determination and proactive approach paid off. I secured internships at reputable technology companies and received recognition for my achievements in the field. Through my journey, I not only overcame adversity as a woman of color in the computer science domain but also made strides towards breaking down barriers and promoting diversity in STEM. This experience taught me the power of resilience, mentorship, and community support. It reinforced the importance of challenging stereotypes, seeking opportunities for personal growth, and advocating for inclusivity. As a woman of color pursuing a career in computer science, I not only overcame adversity but also became a catalyst for change in my school and beyond, inspiring future generations to believe in their abilities and pursue their passions despite the obstacles they may face.

The value of an education can never be understated, especially when you come from a country and country where women rarely finish middle school. A country that had been blemished by continuous violence negatively affecting every aspect of life. My mother’s family were refugees from a small West African country called Liberia, the time was going through its second civil war in the past 2 decades. Liberia is a country that has been affected by war and economic instability for many years, and poverty is a widespread problem. My mother’s tribe were the victims of the violence becoming scapegoats for the poverty in the country. To make my family proud there was an emphasis on education. My grandmother spent her time in her home country supporting orphans and their education. She advocated for education and made sure all her children were adequately educated. When the immigrated to America there was an underlying message that I shouldn’t waste this opportunity given to me being born in America. I looked at my privilege and the advantages awarded to me that were not awarded to my mother and grandmother. I want to make a change in my community through education. I do this at a local level by tutoring young Liberian kids in subjects ranging from math, english, science, and social studies. I do this for a multitude of kids. At my school, there is an elementary school, and I volunteer as a teacher’s aid. I am helping students with their reading and writing skills. Making connections with the kids I help on a personal level. That they have someone they can rely on that is not an authority figure. I donate my old books to my literary so the books that had a significant on me will have the same major impact on the next generation. I want to do this work in my mother’s country. With the money from the scholarship, I can earn my degree and focus the money on building schools in rural parts of the country. Giving those kids an education they deserve so they could make a difference in their lives. Inspired by my grandmother and her devotion to service young children in times of turmoil. I want to help the generation of kids still affected by the war to grow from the adversity placed on them at birth. To continue the work of helping my community locally or nationally, I strive to help every kid have the opportunity of an education that can change the course of their lives.

The summer of 2019, the summer before I enter high school, the last summer of normality, the last summer I could look at my father with warmth. A father and daughter’s relationship is everlasting, a bond that can not be shaken; a figure that adds stability to the daughter’s life, a comforting presence that is always dependable. That was my relationship with my dad. He was my role model and I always sought him out. I did not live with my dad, but when he visited or called, my world brightened. He was like a perfect figure to me. I idolized the idea of him and I could not see any faults in his character. But that facade started to slowly disappear when I got older. Growing up is a process of realizing people are human and that they can change, no matter how much childhood admiration one has for someone. My father is a Kenyan man who immigrated to America in 2002, seeking a better life for himself. My dad was in my life sparsely, only visiting me when he was not deployed. The times when he would visit me were some of my most fond memories. My dad then married a woman from his high school- my stepmom- who was a sign of a relationship changing. My father has always been a devout Christian and instilled his Christian values in me since I was young. A moment when my dad’s presence became uncomfortable is when after dinner he sat me down and he went on a rant about homosexuality. He went in-depth about how it is homosexual agenda to corrupt young kids. Since I was preparing to enter an all-girls school he noted that it was especially dangerous for me. While this wasn’t his first tirade, this was the first time since I started to discover more about myself and thinking about my own sexuality. When he quoted the Bible about the abomination of homosexuality, I felt like he was talking about me- that I was an abomination and because of who I am, I will disgrace him. That night, I went into my room and cried. All of my negative emotions came to a full head and I truly couldn’t think of him as a comfort anymore. Even when my dad would make me cry, I would still seek his validation. That's the irony of familial relationships- even when the rose-colored glasses are taken off, you just can't erase that nostalgic feeling of the past. I learned an important lesson about balance and realistic expectations. I can hold in my heart the desire for a father's relationship and not let his views define how I feel about myself. You try to justify all their actions even when they actively hurt you or others. In father-daughter relationships, even when the daughter grows up and no longer sees her father as perfect, she still remembers his warm embrace–the way he would call her his baby girl and make her feel like the most important person in the world. That can never go away even when the father causes her distress. Always in the back of her head, a voice keeps telling her “He’s doing it for you.” Because she is her father’s daughter.

I have multiple people in my educational career who have supported me. From my family to adult supervisors who have encouraged me to indulge in my dreams. But the person who has helped a great deal that I don’t show enough gratitude to is my best friend. Having a friend who is willing to go above and beyond to help you achieve your educational goals is a true blessing. I am lucky enough to have such a friend who made a selfless decision that impacted my life greatly. We first met in school in 5th grade when for a brief period of time we were in the same class. We rode the same bus together getting off at the same spot. Though if you ask her she would say she had no recollection of this happening. We didn’t become inseparable until 6th grade when we became friends because of the misconception that I was cheating on her during a test. After that moment we were attached together to the hip always finding a way to spend time together. During our time in school together we did fairly well, every semester always getting on the honor roll. In our last year in middle school, there was an exclusive program application that was given to select students to attend. It was meant to help low-income students of color prepare for high school and college. As many students of color from rough backgrounds are disadvantaged in their education compared to their white counterpart. My best friend was one of those students selected. But she was not able to do so as her tumulus family circumstances made it difficult for her to attend. She graciously gave me her application and now looking back on it years later this changed the trajectory of my life. The program helped me enroll in my current high school and soon-to-be college. Without my best friend, I wouldn’t be given the opportunity. Thanks to her selflessness, I was able to participate in the program and gain valuable skills that helps me excel in high school and college. The program provided me with opportunities to attend college fairs, meet with college representatives, and learn about the college application process. Not only did the program help me academically, but it also gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and set high goals for myself. It was an invaluable experience that I will always be grateful for, and I wouldn't have had the opportunity to participate in it without my friend's sacrifice. Having a friend who is willing to put your needs before their own is a rare and special thing. My friend's decision to give up her spot in the program so that I could have it was a true act of kindness that I will always cherish. Her selflessness has had a profound impact on my life and has helped me achieve my educational goals. I am forever grateful for her friendship and the example she has set for me.

An unspoken hero in African American history is the activist Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde was a prominent Black feminist, poet, essayist, and civil rights activist. She was born in New York City on February 18, 1934, to Caribbean immigrant parents. Lorde's childhood was marked by racism and discrimination, and she used writing to escape and self-expression. She attended Hunter College and earned a bachelor's degree in library science and a master's degree in literature from Columbia University. Lorde's poetry often addressed themes of race, gender, sexuality, and identity, and she became known for her powerful and moving readings. She published several collections of poetry, including "The First Cities" (1968), "Cables to Rage" (1970), and "The Black Unicorn" (1978). In addition to her poetry, Lorde was a committed activist for civil rights and social justice. She was involved in various organizations and movements, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Lorde was also an influential teacher and mentor. She taught at several universities, including Hunter College, and founded the St. Croix Women's Coalition, a group that provided support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. In 1992, Lorde died of cancer at the age of 58. However, her legacy lives on through her poetry and activism, which continue to inspire and empower people today. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the American Book Award and the Walt Whitman Citation of Merit. One of Lorde's most significant contributions to the world was her centering on marginalized voices. Her work was grounded in the experiences of Black women and other marginalized communities, and she worked to amplify these voices and challenge systems of oppression. Her advocacy and writing helped to make visible the experiences of those who had been historically excluded from mainstream discourse, and her work continues to be a powerful tool for resistance and empowerment. Lorde's work was one of the earliest examples of intersectionality, the recognition that individuals experience multiple forms of oppression based on their identities. Her writing and advocacy helped to shape feminist and social justice movements that center intersectionality and understand the complex ways in which individuals experience oppression. Her work continues to be instrumental in the fight for social justice today. She influenced the field of creative writing by being a prolific writer, poet, essayist, and activist who had a significant impact on the field of creative writing. Her work, which often explored themes of race, gender, sexuality, and identity, challenged dominant cultural narratives and paved the way for a more diverse and inclusive literary canon. She believed that writing was a tool for social change and used her work to address issues of social justice and inequality. Lorde's writing also had a significant impact on the feminist movement, particularly in terms of its intersectionality. She advocated for the recognition of how race, class, and sexuality intersect with gender, and argued that feminist activism needed to be more inclusive and attentive to the experiences of marginalized groups. Overall, Lorde's work has had a profound influence on the field of creative writing, particularly in terms of its ability to challenge dominant cultural narratives and create more diverse and inclusive literary spaces. Her legacy continues to inspire writers and activists today.

Avoid the strangers in the crowd, With their bright and shining faces, For they may be wolves in sheep's clothing, And put you in dangerous places. Trust not in their friendly smiles, Or the way they wrap their scarves, For they may be hiding their true intent, And waiting for the perfect pause. Instead, walk beside the ones in grey, The ones who blend into the crowd, For they are the ones who watch and wait, And will keep you safe and sound. They will not meet your gaze, But trust me, they are there, Guiding you through the shadows, And watching out for any snare. So heed my warning, dear traveler, And walk with caution in your heart, For the road ahead is treacherous, And one misstep could tear you apart. Keep your eyes open and be aware, And trust in the ones who blend, For they are the ones who will keep you safe, Until the very end.
