At 18, I was struck by a severe illness that led to years of constant pain and despair. Doctors told me there was no hope and that I wouldn’t survive much longer. Despite this, I held onto hope, and after a decade of suffering, something extraordinary happened—I was miraculously healed with no medical explanation. This unexpected recovery gave me a second chance at life, and it ignited a deep sense of purpose to help others.
This healing fueled my decision to pursue a career in medicine. I want to be the kind of doctor who not only treats illnesses but offers hope and care to those who are suffering. I am currently preparing to apply to medical school, determined to use my life experiences to provide patients with the compassionate care they deserve.
In addition to my studies, I have worked as a mental health counselor, helping individuals through some of their most difficult struggles. My role has taught me the value of listening, offering compassion, and treating the whole person. These lessons have shaped my approach to care and will continue to guide me as I pursue a medical career where I can truly make a difference.

Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is incredibly important to me, both as a student and as a person who works in the field of mental health counseling. Throughout my academic journey, I’ve learned that mental health affects every aspect of life—how we learn, how we interact with others, and how we navigate challenges. It has been a driving force in my desire to pursue a career in medicine and counseling, and it influences how I engage with my community on a daily basis.
As a mental health counselor, I’ve had the privilege of helping individuals navigate some of their most difficult moments. I’ve worked with people who have faced trauma, chronic stress, and mental health disorders that have hindered their ability to thrive. One case, in particular, demonstrated to me just how crucial it is to advocate for mental health and address it early. A client I worked with was struggling with untreated mental health concerns and was at risk of incarceration. Instead of following protocol, which would have led to him being dismissed from treatment, I took extra time to offer him additional private sessions. This was a decision I made because I understood how important it was for him to feel heard, cared for, and understood. Over the course of his treatment, he not only completed his program but continued seeing a therapist after leaving our facility. This experience reinforced my belief that mental health must be approached with compassion and attention, not just clinical detachment.
In my personal life, I advocate for mental health by fostering open, honest conversations about the challenges we face. I recognize that many people in my community, whether it’s within my school or my family, hesitate to seek help because of stigma or fear of judgment. I strive to create spaces where people feel comfortable discussing mental health without shame. For example, in my school community, I’ve initiated informal support groups where students can come together to talk about the pressures they face—whether academic, personal, or social. These groups are a place where everyone’s experiences are validated, and students can share coping strategies. By normalizing these conversations, I hope to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage others to seek the help they need.
Beyond informal support groups, I also work to advocate for better access to mental health resources. I’ve collaborated with others to raise awareness of local counseling services and to encourage more mental health-related events on campus, such as guest speakers or workshops on stress management and mental wellness. Through these efforts, I aim to break down barriers to access and ensure that people understand that mental health is just as important as physical health.
As a student, mental health is critical to my success and well-being. It’s impossible to perform at my best academically or personally without taking care of my mental health. That’s why I make it a point to manage my own mental health and prioritize self-care. I also make sure to seek support when needed and model this behavior for others, showing that it’s okay to ask for help.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue advocating for mental health throughout my medical career. My background in mental health counseling has taught me how essential it is to treat the whole person—not just the physical symptoms but the emotional and psychological aspects as well. I want to make sure that patients in my care feel supported in every way, knowing that their mental health is a key part of their overall well-being.

Jesus is everything to me. My faith is not just a part of my life—it is the foundation of who I am, the reason I am here today, and the driving force behind my pursuit of medicine. I am deeply evangelical, devoted to reading the Bible, and unwavering in my belief that God’s hand is in all things. My journey has been a testament to His power, His grace, and His miraculous ability to heal.
At 18, my life changed completely when I became seriously ill. Doctors told me there was no hope, that I would not live much longer. I spent years in pain, suffering through what seemed like an endless battle with no solution. But God had other plans. After over a decade of struggling, I reached a breaking point and surrendered fully to Him. I prayed, I trusted, and I clung to my faith. Then, something incredible happened—God healed me. There was no medical explanation. The pain that had consumed my life disappeared. It was not science, not medicine, but a miracle. I had been given a second chance, and I knew that I had to use it to serve Him.
That miraculous healing changed everything. I dedicated myself to understanding suffering, helping others, and preparing for a future in medicine—not because I see medicine as the ultimate healer, but because I know that God works through those who are called to serve. My experience as a mental health counselor has allowed me to do this in a meaningful way. I have worked with people in crisis, those who have lost hope, and those who feel as though their lives no longer have value. In those moments, I do not simply offer therapy—I offer truth. I remind them that they were created by God, that their life has purpose, and that there is always hope.
My faith has also led me to an unwavering commitment to the sanctity of life. As someone who has been given a second chance at life, I believe it is my duty to protect life at every stage, from conception to natural death. I believe that every person—born and unborn—is created by God with infinite worth, and I will dedicate my medical career to ensuring that truth is upheld. Whether through direct patient care, advocacy, or outreach, I will use my platform to stand for life, to support families in need, and to be a physician who values both the science of medicine and the divine truth that life is sacred.
Now, as I prepare to apply to medical school with a 4.0 GPA, I know that my journey has not been about my strength, but about God's power. There was a time when I thought I had no future, but He has given me a new purpose. I will serve as a doctor, not just to heal bodies, but to bring hope to those who feel lost. My life is a testimony to the fact that no situation is beyond God's reach, and I intend to spend every day proving that truth through my work.
Through faith, medicine, and unwavering devotion to my calling, I will enact change, protect life, and glorify God in all that I do.

The decision to become a medical doctor is deeply personal to me. My journey has been shaped by challenges that tested my endurance, reshaped my understanding of suffering, and ultimately fueled my passion for healing. After becoming seriously ill at 18, my life was consumed by chronic pain and uncertainty. For over a decade, I was repeatedly told by doctors that I would not live much longer. Those years were not just physically exhausting but emotionally isolating. I lost time, opportunities, and a sense of control over my own future. But when my health unexpectedly improved, I saw it as a second chance—an opportunity to dedicate my life to helping others who are struggling, just as I once did.
Pursuing medicine has not been an easy path. Financial circumstances have made this journey more difficult, as I have had to support myself while balancing rigorous academic work. Unlike many traditional pre-med students, I did not start college right after high school or have a structured, straightforward route to medical school. Instead, I had to build my education piece by piece while navigating the responsibilities of adulthood. However, rather than deterring me, these challenges strengthened my resolve. They taught me discipline, resilience, and the value of perseverance—qualities that will make me a better physician.
My experience in mental health counseling further reinforced my commitment to medicine. Working with individuals facing profound struggles, I witnessed firsthand the gaps in our healthcare system, particularly for underserved populations. One client, a young man on the verge of being incarcerated due to untreated mental health issues, exemplified these challenges. Instead of allowing him to fall through the cracks, I invested extra time to ensure he understood his condition and the importance of treatment. He not only completed his program but continued therapy beyond our facility. That experience taught me the power of patient-centered care and the difference that genuine compassion can make. It also made me realize that I wanted to do more—to not only counsel but also diagnose, treat, and advocate for patients on a broader scale.
Having faced illness, financial hardship, and unconventional educational paths, I bring a unique perspective to medicine. I understand what it is like to feel powerless in the face of health challenges, and I know the frustration of navigating a complex healthcare system. These experiences will shape me into a physician who not only provides medical treatment but also empathizes with patients on a deeper level. I will be someone who listens intently, advocates fiercely, and ensures that no patient feels unheard or overlooked.
Now, as I prepare to apply to medical school with a 4.0 GPA, I see my struggles not as obstacles but as the foundation of the doctor I hope to become. I plan to use my education to bridge the gaps in patient care, especially for those who feel forgotten or misunderstood. My goal is to make a lasting impact—not just by treating illnesses but by instilling hope, empowering patients, and ensuring that no one has to endure their struggles alone. Medicine is more than a career for me; it is a calling, born from hardship, strengthened by resilience, and driven by an unwavering desire to serve others.
Robert F. Lawson Fund for Careers that Care
My journey has been anything but conventional, but every challenge I have faced has shaped me into the person I am today—one who is deeply committed to making a difference in the lives of others. At 18, I became seriously ill, and my world as I knew it came to a halt. The pain was relentless, and after a decade of struggling, I lost hope. Doctors repeatedly told me I wouldn’t live much longer, and I believed them. But then, something shifted. I made a choice to fight for my life, no matter how difficult the path ahead would be. I endured over 30 days of unimaginable suffering, but what happened next was nothing short of a miracle—my body healed. It was as if I had been given a second chance, and I refused to waste it.
With my newfound health, I committed myself to something greater. I entered the field of mental health counseling, where I saw firsthand the power of compassion and intervention. One case, in particular, solidified my resolve to pursue medicine. A young man, resistant to treatment, was at risk of returning to jail due to untreated mental health concerns. Instead of following protocol and allowing him to fall through the cracks, I took extra time to work with him—offering free private sessions and guiding him toward understanding his own struggles. In the end, he not only completed his treatment and avoided incarceration, but he also continued therapy beyond our program. He later told me that no one had ever truly cared about him before. That moment reinforced my belief that even the smallest acts of kindness can change the course of a life.
While my work in mental health has been deeply fulfilling, I realized that my passion lies in addressing the root causes of suffering before they manifest into crises. This realization led me to pursue a career in pediatric medicine. I have seen how untreated childhood illnesses—both physical and mental—can shape the trajectory of a person’s entire life. I want to be a physician who does more than diagnose and prescribe; I want to be someone who listens, who advocates, and who ensures that no child feels unseen or unheard.
Now, at 33, I am preparing to apply to medical school with a 4.0 GPA. My journey has given me a perspective that many do not have—a personal understanding of pain, perseverance, and the power of resilience. I want to use my education to inspire and uplift others, particularly those who feel trapped in cycles of suffering. Whether it is through direct patient care, community outreach, or mentoring individuals who have lost hope, I am committed to using my experiences to help others find their own second chance.
I believe that the best doctors are not just those who have mastered science, but those who have mastered empathy. My past does not define me, but it has given me a purpose: to serve, to heal, and to remind others that no matter how impossible things may seem, there is always a path forward. Through medicine, I plan to make a lasting impact on the world—one life, one patient, and one act of kindness at a time.

Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
To me, legacy is not merely about what we leave behind, but about the impact we have on the lives of others and the values we instill in future generations. It’s about overcoming adversity and using our experiences to forge a path that inspires and empowers others. My upbringing has deeply influenced my understanding of legacy, shaping the way I approach challenges and the aspirations I have for my future.
Raised by a single mother who left an abusive, alcoholic father, I witnessed resilience in its most powerful form. My mother, a first-generation immigrant, navigated the immense challenges of starting over in a new country. She built a life for us from the ground up, starting a business teaching English while pursuing her education to become a psychologist and licensed clinician. She eventually specialized in court-mandated programs like DUI and Domestic Violence classes, helping others navigate their darkest moments. Her journey was one of relentless hard work, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to creating a better future for herself and me.
My mother’s story is the foundation of my own legacy. From a young age, I saw how she turned her struggles into strength, refusing to let circumstances dictate the course of her life. She taught me that a legacy isn’t just about what you achieve but about how you rise above obstacles and use your experiences to make a difference. Her ability to transform pain into purpose has deeply influenced my approach to life and my goals.
My upbringing has instilled in me a profound sense of responsibility to continue this legacy of resilience and to push it even further. While my mother focused on mental health and education, I have taken those lessons and channeled them into my current pursuit of a degree in biochemistry. I dream of developing innovative therapies that blend mental health with biochemical processes, aiming to create more effective treatments for psychological conditions. My vision is to build a therapeutic environment using colors and sounds to elicit dissociative and desensitizing effects, offering a new avenue for those who do not respond to traditional therapies.
Continuing the legacy my mother began means carrying forward her spirit of perseverance and compassion, but it also involves breaking certain cycles. While she had to work tirelessly to make ends meet, often sacrificing her own well-being, I plan to break the cycle of financial instability by securing the education and resources I need to fully focus on my research and innovations. I aim to create a balance where I can pursue my passion for helping others without the financial strain that my mother faced.
Moreover, I plan to break the cycle of silence and stigma surrounding mental health. By integrating my knowledge of biochemistry with mental health, I hope to challenge traditional therapeutic methods and offer new solutions that address both the mind and body. This approach is not just about creating a legacy of scientific innovation, but about changing the way we think about and treat mental health.
In conclusion, legacy to me is about transforming adversity into opportunity and using those opportunities to create lasting change. My upbringing has taught me the value of resilience, hard work, and the importance of leaving a positive impact on the world. I plan to continue my mother’s legacy by pushing the boundaries of what is possible in mental health treatment, while also breaking the cycles that have held us back, ensuring that my contributions are both meaningful and enduring.
Curtis Holloway Memorial Scholarship
Behind every success story lies a foundation of unwavering support, and for me, that foundation is my mother. Raised by a single mother who courageously left an abusive, alcoholic father, I witnessed firsthand what it means to rise above adversity. My mother’s journey from being a first-generation immigrant to becoming a successful entrepreneur and psychologist is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and unconditional love.
After her divorce, my mother found herself alone in a new country, facing financial instability and the daunting task of raising a child on her own. Rather than succumbing to the challenges, she used them as fuel for her ambition. She started a business teaching English, a skill she had mastered despite the odds stacked against her. But she didn’t stop there. She continued her education, balancing the demands of single parenthood with her studies, and eventually became a licensed clinician specializing in court-mandated programs like DUI and Domestic Violence classes.
Watching my mother work tirelessly to build a better life for us was more than just an inspiration; it was a masterclass in resilience and dedication. I saw her pour every ounce of her strength into creating a stable environment for me, often sacrificing her own needs to ensure I had every opportunity to succeed. Her relentless work ethic and commitment to personal growth instilled in me the belief that with hard work, anything is possible, no matter how insurmountable the challenges may seem.
As I grew older, I had the privilege of working alongside my mother, witnessing up close the impact of her work. I saw her guide individuals through the darkest moments of their lives, offering them the tools and support they needed to rebuild. Her compassion and unwavering commitment to helping others not only reinforced the values she had instilled in me but also gave me a deep appreciation for the path she had chosen. It was in these moments that I truly understood the magnitude of what she had been doing for me all these years—providing not just financial support, but a living example of how to turn pain into purpose.
My mother’s support extended far beyond the financial or material. She gave me the emotional and psychological strength to pursue my dreams, even when the path seemed uncertain. Her belief in my potential was a constant source of motivation, pushing me to aim higher and never settle for less than what I was capable of achieving. Whenever I faced obstacles, I drew strength from her example, knowing that if she could overcome the incredible struggles she faced, I too could persevere.
Today, as I pursue my education and work toward my own goals, I carry my mother’s lessons with me. Her story is a reminder that success is not just about reaching the destination, but about the journey and the people who help us along the way. My mother’s support has been the bedrock of my achievements, and it is her resilience that I strive to emulate in everything I do.
In a world that often underestimates the power of a single person to effect change, my mother’s life stands as a powerful counterexample. She has shown me that true success is not measured by what we accumulate, but by the lives we touch and the legacy we leave behind. I am forever grateful for her support, and I am determined to honor her sacrifices by pursuing my goals with the same relentless drive and compassion that she has shown me.

Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My journey in the field of mental health began over a decade ago, when I first became a licensed mental health counselor. For six years, I worked directly with clients, guiding them through their struggles, helping them find stability, and witnessing the profound impact that effective therapy can have on a person’s life. Over time, my role expanded, and I became a regional manager for a counseling center, overseeing court-mandated programs and working closely with both patients and clinicians. This experience not only shaped my beliefs and relationships but also fueled my career aspirations, leading me to pursue a new path in biochemistry.
Working with thousands of patients and clinicians has given me a unique perspective on the mental health industry. I have seen the benefits that traditional therapeutic methods, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can offer. CBT has been a cornerstone in treating various mental health conditions, providing patients with tools to manage their thoughts and behaviors. However, my hands-on experience also exposed me to the limitations and drawbacks of these methods. I witnessed patients who, despite their best efforts, struggled to make significant progress with CBT. It became clear to me that while CBT is effective for many, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
As a regional manager, I had the opportunity to see the broader picture of how mental health services are administered, particularly in relation to the legal system. The intersection of mental health and the legal system is often convoluted, with city contracts and financial interests sometimes taking precedence over patient care. I observed how these dynamics could lead to monopolies on fair treatment, where the focus shifted from providing the best possible care to ensuring that certain entities received the most financial benefit. This realization was disheartening, as it highlighted the systemic issues that can impede access to effective mental health care.
These experiences profoundly influenced my beliefs. I became more critical of the existing mental health infrastructure, recognizing the need for innovation and reform. My work in the field made me acutely aware of the gaps in our current therapeutic approaches, particularly for individuals who do not respond well to conventional methods like CBT. This awareness led me to question how mental health care could be improved and what role I could play in that process.
My relationships were also shaped by my experiences in mental health. Working closely with patients allowed me to develop deep empathy and understanding for those struggling with mental health issues. I learned the importance of listening, not just to respond, but to truly understand the complexities of each individual’s experience. This approach extended to my relationships with colleagues and clinicians, where collaboration and shared insights became essential tools in providing the best care possible. These relationships reinforced my belief in the importance of a holistic approach to mental health care, one that considers the individual’s unique needs and circumstances.
Ultimately, my experiences in mental health led me to pursue a new career in biochemistry. The limitations I observed in traditional therapy sparked a desire to explore alternative approaches that could complement or even surpass existing methods. One of my dreams is to develop a new form of therapy that goes beyond CBT, incorporating elements of color and sound to elicit a dissociative and desensitizing effect. I believe that by engaging multiple senses, it may be possible to create a therapeutic environment that is more immersive and effective for certain patients.
The transition to biochemistry represents a natural evolution of my career aspirations. With a strong foundation in mental health, I am now focused on understanding the biological underpinnings of psychological conditions and how they can be influenced by external stimuli. My goal is to combine this knowledge with my counseling experience to create innovative therapies that address the limitations of current methods. I am particularly interested in exploring how biochemical processes can be harnessed to enhance therapeutic outcomes, potentially leading to breakthroughs that could revolutionize the field of mental health.
In conclusion, my experience with mental health has profoundly influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. It has driven me to question the status quo, seek out new solutions, and ultimately pursue a path in biochemistry where I can apply my insights to develop more effective therapies. I am committed to bridging the gap between mental health and biochemistry, working toward a future where everyone has access to the care they need, free from the constraints of outdated systems and practices.
