I am a graduating senior at Trinity Episcopal School (Richmond, VA). I am a scholar track and field athlete who aspires to become a landscape architect with a focus on sustainability planning and design. I am passionate about the environment and creating healthy communities. I believe green spaces are essential to our livelihood and I am excited to continue my studies at the University of Rhode Island as a landscape architecture major.
I chose a career path where I will be presented the opportunity to create spaces that improve the way people live, work and play. I believe my strong logic skills and success in STEM classes will be an asset in my education and work. I would like to build a career specializing in eco-landscapes to support a healthy environment.
I have a strong commitment to academics and enrichment experiences including a work-week internship at an architecture firm, a summer program focused on architectural career exploration and a part-time job at a local plant nursery where I learn about landscaping products and projects. I hope to continue this work by supporting environmental projects while in college.
I am also passionate about athletics, and I am a three-time, track and field state champion, also breaking multiple school records. In addition to my academic and athletic experiences, I also enjoy music, golfing, gardening, photography, travel, and sports.

Tom LoCasale Developing Character Through Golf Scholarship
Early morning dew, birds chirping, calm sunrises, and memorable time spent playing golf taught me many lessons early in life. As a child, all I thought about was struggling to wake up at the crack of dawn on Saturdays, walking through misty greens with drenched shoes, and not playing well, just to trek nine holes with my dad and grandpa. We would talk and share memories that have kept us tightly bonded. My family values golf and at a young age, the game became an integral part of my life. As a future landscape architect, I also like that golf gives me the opportunity to enjoy nature and take in the environment. What I didn’t see was how meaningful golf would be in my development and the creation of lasting bonds with friends and relatives.
Golf has not just been a pastime or a family tradition; it has been a crucible for personal growth and a platform for building lasting relationships. As I spent countless hours on the course, I learned the importance of patience and resilience. Golf taught me that success often requires hard work, perseverance through challenges, and the ability to maintain focus, not just on the fairway but in life as well. Furthermore, the golf course has been a classroom for me, where I acquired valuable life skills, including discipline and sportsmanship, which have shaped me into the person I am today.
Golf has also been an unexpected but valuable factor in my success as a track athlete. The skills and attributes I honed on the golf course have proven to be transferable and beneficial in other aspects of my life. One of the most notable parallels is the mental fortitude required in both golf and track. Before each swing, I believe my 'next shot is my best shot.' So, I took those lessons to the track and at several meets where I struggled a bit, I used that mindset to break new records. The ability to stay focused under pressure, make strategic decisions, and maintain composure has served me well in the competitive world of track and field. I've found that the same discipline that kept me improving my golf game also propelled me to push my limits and set new sprint records in various events.
Additionally, golf has provided a framework for adaptability and resilience, which became particularly crucial when I switched schools in my junior year. The experience of learning a new golf course, with its unique challenges and nuances, helped me embrace change and the unknown with a more open mindset. Similarly, transitioning to a new school required adjusting to a different academic environment, making new friends, and navigating unfamiliar social dynamics. The determination I developed through golf enabled me to overcome the initial hurdles and embrace this new chapter of my life.
In retrospect, those early mornings, when I begrudgingly woke up to play golf with my dad and grandpa, have evolved into a source of invaluable life lessons. While I may have initially resented the idea of sacrificing my sleep, I now recognize that those moments on the golf course were instrumental in teaching me so much more than just how to improve my swing. The lessons imparted by my dad and grandpa, as well as the intrinsic values I gleaned from the sport, have become the foundation that will guide me through adulthood. Ultimately, golf, with all its early morning hardships, has given me a toolkit for navigating the various aspects of life with confidence and the wisdom to cherish the lessons hidden within every drenched shoe and missed swing.
