I dream of teaching students to develop new skills, inspiration, and personal growth. I hope to one day return to my high school and have a similar impact on future students while also coaching the baseball team. Through teaching and coaching, I will give back to the community that has helped shape me into who I am today.

Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
Leadership is a quality that can be cultivated through various experiences in life. For me, the game of baseball has served as an incredible platform for personal growth and the development of leadership skills. As both a coach and player, I have gained valuable insights, learned to navigate challenges, and honed essential qualities that have translated into my everyday life. This essay explores my journey of becoming a leader through baseball and how the skills acquired on the field have positively influenced my interactions, decision-making, and overall approach to life.
As a player, I discovered the importance of setting goals and envisioning success. In baseball, every play and every pitch demands focus, strategy, and clear communication. Similarly, in life, having a vision and setting meaningful goals have been instrumental in guiding my actions. Whether it was aiming to improve my batting average or striving for personal growth, baseball taught me to create a vision and work diligently towards achieving it.
Baseball is a team sport that requires cooperation, communication, and collaboration. As a player, I understood the significance of teamwork and how collective efforts contribute to success. The ability to work harmoniously with teammates and understand their strengths and weaknesses translated directly to my everyday life. I learned to appreciate diverse perspectives, delegate tasks effectively, and foster a supportive environment in both personal and professional settings.
Baseball is a game of constant adaptation and resilience. As a player, I faced numerous challenges such as errors, injuries, and defeat. These experiences taught me to bounce back from setbacks, maintain composure under pressure, and adapt to changing circumstances. In everyday life, I have encountered similar obstacles and setbacks. However, through the lessons learned on the field, I have developed the resilience to persevere and find innovative solutions when faced with adversity.
Effective communication is paramount in baseball. As a player and coach, I realized the significance of clear and concise communication to convey strategies, instructions, and support. These skills have been invaluable in my everyday life, enabling me to articulate my thoughts, listen actively to others, and build strong interpersonal relationships. Whether leading a team project or engaging in personal conversations, my experiences in baseball have enhanced my ability to communicate effectively and inspire others.
As a player and coach, I recognized that true leadership extends beyond words—it is about leading by example. Demonstrating dedication, discipline, and a strong work ethic on the baseball field inspired my teammates and players to follow suit. This principle of leading through actions has translated directly into my everyday life. Whether it is in my professional endeavors or personal relationships, I strive to embody the qualities I wish to see in others, motivating them through my own commitment and determination.
Baseball has played a pivotal role in shaping me into the leader I am today. Through my experiences as both a player and coach, I have acquired essential skills such as setting a vision, embracing teamwork, adapting to challenges, effective communication, and leading by example. These qualities have seamlessly transferred to my everyday life, allowing me to navigate challenges, inspire others, and make a positive impact. As I continue to grow and evolve, I remain grateful for the lessons learned on the baseball field, as they have laid the foundation for my leadership journey both on and off the diamond.

Not only has playing baseball opened doors to new opportunities, but it has also created lasting memories, fostered meaningful relationships, and taught me invaluable lessons about myself and life.

From game-winning hits to celebratory team dinners, each memory holds a special place in my heart. After playing my last baseball game, I realized that the sport had become an integral part of who I am. Baseball has ingrained in me a sense of discipline, perseverance, and dedication. The sport has taught me that success is not achieved overnight but is the result of continuous effort and a willingness to learn from both triumphs and failures. Moreover, the lessons learned on the diamond have translated into other aspects of my life, helping me navigate challenges with resilience and determination.
Engaging in sports, particularly baseball, has been instrumental in my self-discovery. As a high school student, I've been giving a lot of thought to what I want to do with my life after graduation. One idea that has been at the forefront of my mind is pursuing a career in education, specifically as a high school baseball coach. My mom and grandma were both teachers, and I've always admired them for their ability to positively impact the lives of their students. I would be able to make a difference in the lives of my students, and that would bring me a sense of fulfillment that no other career could.
Moreover, I'm passionate about helping kids develop healthy habits. With an increasing number of children struggling with obesity and other health problems, I believe that educating kids about the importance of exercise, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle choices is more important than ever. As a coach and teacher, I would be in a unique position to influence and educate my students on the importance of physical fitness and healthy habits. Wellness Warriors Scholarship
Personal wellness is an important aspect of one's overall health and well-being, especially during the challenging and demanding years of high school. It's not just about physical fitness, but also encompasses mental, emotional, and social health. As a high school student, I've learned to use a variety of strategies to manage my personal wellness, including music, exercise, mental health podcasts, and talking to friends. By prioritizing my wellness, I've been able to maintain focus on my academics and not let outside distractions impact my success.
One of my favorite ways to manage my personal wellness is by listening to music. I find that music helps me to relax and de-stress, and it also puts me in a better mood. Whether I'm getting ready in the morning, driving to school, or studying for an exam, music is always a helpful companion. I particularly enjoy listening to instrumental music or pop-folk/country songs, especially when I need to relax. Zach Bryan is one of my favorite artists I have listened to for awhile and he his music has gotten me through my ups and lots of downs.
Another way that I manage my personal wellness is through exercise. Weightlifting, intramural/recreational basketball, and baseball are my go-to physical activities. Engaging in physical exercise not only helps me stay in shape, but also helps to improve my mood and reduce stress levels. Whether I'm lifting weights in the gym or shooting hoops with friends, I always feel better after a good workout.
In addition to music and exercise, I've found that listening to mental health podcasts is another useful tool for managing my personal wellness. Hearing about other people's experiences with mental health challenges and learning strategies for coping has helped me to better understand my own struggles and to develop more effective ways of dealing with them. I particularly enjoy podcasts that focus on mindfulness, anxiety, and stress management.
Finally, talking to friends is another essential part of my personal wellness routine. Having a support system of people who understand me and are there for me when I need them is incredibly important. Whether I'm venting about a difficult day or sharing a funny story, talking to my friends helps me to feel connected and supported. We also often go for a workout or play a game together, which doubles the benefits of these activities.
Maintaining my personal wellness has helped me to succeed as a student by reducing my stress levels and improving my focus. By making time for activities that bring me joy and help me to relax, I'm better able to concentrate on my studies and not let outside distractions impact my academic performance. For example, after a good workout, I feel more energized and focused and am better able to tackle my homework or study for exams.
Managing personal wellness is crucial for high school students, and I've found that music, exercise, mental health podcasts, and talking to friends are all effective ways to do so. By prioritizing my wellness, I've been able to maintain my academic focus and not let outside distractions impact my success. These activities have become an essential part of my daily routine and have helped me to become a healthier and happier person.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
As I began my freshman year, I had heard of depression and anxiety, but I would soon discover that I was experiencing them. At first, I did not comprehend or entirely believe that mental health issues were frequent among kids since I assumed depression and anxiety were uncommon. I would soon learn the average high school student has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s, which is mindboggling how common and extreme mental health has become.
My journey began when I was six years old when my best friend moved away. This experience seems minor, but this was just the beginning. Eventually, I would have close friends move away almost every year, and sometimes multiple in a year. I also had close friends leaving for college, which caused an even greater lack of stability in friendships. Because of the continual emotions, I felt as a result of losing friendships, the depression and anxiety I felt would damage many more relationships. I struggled to let go of the past and move on, so I unloaded my anger on those who attempted to help me. The feeling of abandonment from both friends moving away and moving on became an ongoing cycle I could not escape. I have lived in fear of friends leaving me, which has led to trust issues that I am still dealing with today.
I still remember January 1, 2017, waking to a new year full of hope to soon find out our family friend Ava Lee passed away. I was left numb at eleven years old, wondering why Ava? We were on our way to church that morning, and I remember how much emotion was in the sanctuary during that service. Her father was our pastor, and everyone loved Ava and her family. She had battled leukemia for many years and had even defeated it once before relapsing. I questioned why such a sweet young girl had left this world so shortly and wondered why it wasn’t me. I was left with so much pain the following days crying in complete shock. We eventually went to her funeral, which was my first funeral when I knew the individual personally. We listened to her family share stories and watched a slideshow of pictures in her memory. The presentation included the Coldplay song Yellow, which I still use to remember her five years later. The entire experience was excruciatingly painful, and I never wish to go through it again. She gave me a new perspective on life, but it took a long time for me to accept it.
Since tragedy struck once more on January 24, 2020, January has historically been a difficult month for me. I was with my best friend and went to his house after our baseball practice. He invited his school friends to hang out with us in his backyard. We called an ambulance while I watched Allyson lay on the ground, gargling lifelessly. They took Allyson to the hospital, and I found out that night she was in a coma. I pushed all my feelings away as we dealt with the situation until later that night when I got home, I balled my eyes out. I had gone from not knowing her to suddenly being a part of the most traumatic day of her life. I watched her go through many forms of therapy and recover from her Traumatic Brain Injury. I became close friends with her after, and talking to her has given me a little closure, but I still experience pain from watching the accident replay in my head.
All these experiences took a toll on me because I tried to put my experiences into perspective, but I could not escape the cycle of depression. I was comparing my situations to theirs and not thinking my experiences and watching those events were as bad as the situations they were in and thought I was not worthy of feeling sadness and pain. I found myself saying at times that I did not want to be here anymore and wanted the pain to end. Those feelings would eventually subside, but it took many years to learn to manage them. It required lots of painful lessons and truths to overcome these obstacles. Some nights, I still lay in bed trembling and with a racing heart, terrified of both the past and the future. I feel like I am the problem because everyone left me one way or another, which causes me to struggle with saying the words I love you to friends and family because of the fear of abandonment. In a few years, I went from not fully understanding mental health to having a profound understanding.
Growing up, I always thought high school was supposed to be the happiest period of my life. Although my time in high school has not been the happiest time of my life, it may have been the most important. I learned many lessons and have grown as an individual significantly. Perhaps the most important lesson I learned was with time comes healing, and everything has a purpose.
After these experiences, I believe mental health has heavily impacted many others, including myself. I quickly learned not to criticize individuals since I never know what they have been through, especially today when mental illness is so prevalent. I had the fortune of having friends care for me even though some have moved on. I am forever grateful for my friends who were there for me and got me help, even when I was too shy to ask for help.
As I aspire to become a physical education teacher, I hope to create a safe and comfortable environment while teaching teenagers healthy coping mechanisms to relieve stress and anxiety through different forms of exercise. I want to show students the building blocks to living a happier and healthier life. I hope to be a teacher for students who can talk about their situations.
Craig Norrbom Baseball Scholarship
There are so many feelings in baseball that you can not find elsewhere. Catching up with friends while playing catch and hitting in the cages will always be therapeutic. Baseball also gives you a thrill like no other, whether you just split a ball in the gap or struck out the side. Many sports are team sports, but baseball requires the most teamwork of them all. I have been on many talented teams, but it is the teams that are bonded the closest that are the most successful, which is one of the reasons why I love the sport.
Although many would disagree, baseball is the best sport of all time. Baseball is perfect in so many ways, but my favorite aspect of the sport is the energy it brings. If I had to pick any events to watch for the rest of my life, it would be the World Baseball Classic and the College World Series with no hesitation. There is a different atmosphere in those games because the players are playing for their school or country’s pride. Baseball has become a global sport with players and prospects coming from all around the world, and I am excited for what the future holds. I have grown up in a Taiwanese and Chinese family, and Asian players have been hard to come by to watch. However, the most talented player in baseball, Shohei Ohtani, is changing the game alone as an Asian. Fans are witnessing history as he is pitching and hitting at a historic pace by throwing 100 miles per hour and hitting homers 450+ feet. The World Baseball Classic allows the fans to watch superstars play with pride and represent their countries on a global stage.
My favorite position has to be a pitcher because any pitcher has the potential to be dominant. There are pitchers like Greg Maddux who change speeds and paint the corners, while you have pitchers like Jacob Degrom who throw blistering fastballs at 100 miles per hour and sliders that buckle hitters.
Although pitchers are my favorite position, my favorite player of all time is Larry Wayne “Chipper” Jones Jr. which is quite untraditional for my age. My dad grew up in Marietta, just minutes from the Braves stadium Truist Park which is why I love the Atlanta Braves. As a seventeen-year-old from the suburbs of Chicago, my friends often have a love for the local and flashy superstar players. However, Chipper Jones was my inspiration to wear the number ten, and I have never loved another player like him. Because I have played baseball my whole life, I understand the complete difficulty of the game. He established himself as one of the greatest players by being inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. The average player lasts only 2.7 years and struggles to compete at the highest level. Chipper Jones was able to switch-hit for 19 years with the Atlanta Braves. Most players play for multiple teams throughout their careers, but Chipper stuck loyally to the Atlanta Braves, receiving All-Star appearances, an MVP, a World Series ring, and an induction into the Hall of Fame. He was not the flashiest player, by all means, but hitting for average and power by having a career average of .303 and crushing 468 home runs will be why he is considered one of the greatest of all time.
Baseball has created many core memories, including winning tournaments, coaching, or watching the Braves win the World Series, which is why I love baseball.
