During my high school years, I have had constant struggles retaining material in class due to my habit of being distracted with other events in my life, some either at home, work, or even other classes. However, I have been able to gather information in another way that help especially me. When I do not get something, I make sure to remember and go back over it when I get home. Most of the time, when I am studying, I try to retain the information for around 20 to 30 minutes, then I take a 5-minute break in order for my brain to process the material. I then go back to studying for another 20 to 30 minutes and repeat this cycle until I have studied a good amount. Another method I use often is just asking the instructor when they are available. Although, this idea may seem simple, many people overlook it in an attempt to seem smarter to their peers, which I think backfires often. The questions that a student wants to ask are usually questions that other people might have, and asking the teacher is mainly to help oneself understand the content, which is the reason I ask the instructor for assistance in retention, for myself and others who are afraid to ask questions. Both of these methods, in tandem with each other, have allowed me to retain a plethora of information and have facilitated the process of me maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 and a weighted grade point average of 4.3 throughout my career. As I more closely examine the STEM field and the careers that come with it, I notice that most of the careers benefit a large number of people in one's community. This can be seen in a simpler career like phone repair or more complex careers like medicine or lab research. Either way, all careers in STEM impact how a community functions, and all of them give back to them in some way. When I receive my degree in a STEM field, I would love to pursue a career in biology. Biology is also able to help my community in many different ways by providing for different fields of a community. Some of these fields consist of agriculture, medicine, food, and environmental protection. Communities include a large group of people, usually from all different walks of life and backgrounds, who require different diets, treatments, and conditions in which they live to be satisfied. Biology also allows people to understand who they are and how where they come from affects their wants and needs in different situations. Biology allows me to give back to my community through not only physical but also mental products, which is what interests me most about the field. It seems like no matter what career in STEM I choose to pursue, I am able to give back to my community in some fashion, which is one of the main goals of a career for me.

During my high school years, I have noticed that many students retain material in different ways. Some students manage to understand most of the information in class, while others have to study often to understand the things that were covered. I am one of those students who is a little bit of both. If I am not focused on class or struggle to understand the material at the time, I will usually attempt to cover the topic at home based on the importance of the information. I also study effectively in relation to how my mind works. Most of the time, when I am learning, I try to retain the information for around 20 to 30 minutes, then I take a 5-minute break in order for my brain to process the material. I then go back to studying for another 20 to 30 minutes and repeat this cycle until I have studied a good amount. Another method I use often is just asking the instructor when they are available. Both of these methods, in tandem with each other, have allowed me to retain a plethora of information and have facilitated the process of me maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.9 and a weighted grade point average of 4.3 throughout my career while gaining achievements such as the AP Scholar Award and excelling in math, science, and English composition. Throughout my life, I have noticed the need for science, technology, engineering, and math in our world. From using something as small as an electric stove to cook food to something on a more national scale like online trade, STEM has changed the lives of humans in a plethora of ways. The STEM field has taught the world many things about itself that we didn't know even as much as 10 years ago. Humans can simply understand how our practices affect the world both positively and negatively thanks to technology, which helps change for the better as the world evolves as well, further adding to the fact that STEM has affected the lives of most people in the world in many ways. These reasons have interested me and persuaded me to pursue a career in this field. The STEM field has influenced my day-to-day lifestyle in a large way. Science gives many reasons as to why things are the way they are and allows me to understand how living organisms interact with each other and different objects, such as the idea of climate change. Technology is one of, if not the largest, factors in how the world has changed overall. For instance, I wouldn't even be writing this essay if it wasn't for technology. While technology has a huge impact, math and engineering play a large role as well, since the combination of these two facilitated the creation of technology. Engineering has created almost everything humanity sees and interacts with, except natural phenomena and resources, of course, and math, known as the "language of the universe" by many, has affected how patterns are noticed, and values are organized. Math has also developed the idea of trade for goods and services for valuable items. The interactions of these ideas allow humanity to evolve every day and create solutions to some of the many problems that come with STEM, such as diseases, world hunger, and inflation. Overall, the reason I want to pursue a degree in the STEM field is to not only attempt to understand how different organisms, objects, and ideas function in our society and world, but to eventually make a difference with research and practice in this field. With this scholarship, I can be one step closer to pursuing my dreams of becoming a biologist, chemist, or biosystems engineer in the future. As I more closely examine the STEM field and the careers that come with it, I notice that most of the careers benefit a large number of people in one's community. Either way, all careers in STEM impact how a community functions, and all of them give back to them in some way. When I receive my degree in a STEM field, I would love to pursue a career in finance or biology. With a career in finance, I am able to help my community in many ways. This can consist of finding areas of excessive spending for each of their clients, filing taxes for them, and overall managing the status of their financial processes. This career interests me because of my excellent experience in both math and technology and the ability to help others in my community. Biology is also able to help my community in many different ways by providing for different fields of a community.
