Being a first-generation college student is both a privilege and a challenge. It represents the courage to step into unknown territory and the determination to break cycles and create a brighter future. This unique status has profoundly shaped my career goals and deepened my sense of purpose as I pursue higher education and a career in nursing.
Growing up in a single-mother household, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my mother made to provide for our family. Her resilience in the face of adversity taught me the value of hard work, resourcefulness, and determination. As the first person in my family to attend college, I carry her hopes and dreams alongside my own, determined to use this opportunity to build a foundation for a better future—not only for myself but for those I aim to serve in my career.
The financial struggles I have seen and experienced have also influenced my career goals. As I prepare to enter college, I am acutely aware of the burden that tuition and living expenses place on my family and myself. These challenges have shaped my determination to pursue a career that is not only personally fulfilling but also impactful for others. My goal is to become a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, where I can provide care and support to the most vulnerable patients and their families. This path allows me to combine my passion for healthcare with my desire to give back to my community.
Being a first-generation college student has instilled in me a commitment to create opportunities for those who face barriers similar to mine. I aspire to mentor and inspire young people from underprivileged backgrounds, encouraging them to embrace education as a pathway to achieve their dreams. Imagine the weight of being the first in your family to embark on a journey no one has taken before. You carry the hopes of loved ones, the pressure of proving that dreams are attainable, and the responsibility to pave the way for future generations. This is what it means to be a first-generation college student—a role I embrace with pride, determination, and an unwavering commitment to transforming challenges into opportunities.
For me, education represents far more than acquiring knowledge—it’s a gateway to opportunity, growth, and empowerment. Growing up, my family faced significant financial challenges that shaped the way I view the world and my role within it. Being raised in a single-mother household, I witnessed firsthand the sacrifices my mother made to ensure I had opportunities she never did. She worked tirelessly to provide for us, juggling multiple jobs and countless responsibilities with determination and resilience. Her efforts inspired me to see education as a tool for breaking cycles of hardship and creating change, not only for myself but for others who face similar struggles.
Being a first-generation college student brings unique challenges. Without a family background in higher education, I’ve had to navigate unfamiliar territory on my own, figuring out the college application process, understanding financial aid, and managing academic demands. At times, it has been overwhelming, but it has also fueled my ambition to succeed. My experiences have taught me that education is not just a privilege; it’s a powerful force for breaking barriers and achieving independence. This perspective drives my passion for pursuing higher education and making the most of this opportunity.
Education allows me to transform my dreams into tangible actions, and it’s the reason I’m pursuing a career in nursing, specifically in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Through this path, I aspire to touch lives by caring for the most vulnerable and offering hope during challenging times. Beyond my profession, I want my story to inspire others, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, to believe in their ability to overcome adversity. I hope to be a mentor and advocate for young people, encouraging them to view education as a pathway to achieve their aspirations, no matter the obstacles they face.
Financial challenges remain a significant concern as I prepare for college, but they have also shaped my determination. The rising cost of tuition and the burden of student loans weigh heavily, but my resilience motivates me to find solutions—whether through scholarships, part-time work, or community support. These challenges are a reminder of why education is so important: it offers the opportunity to rise above limitations and build a brighter future.
Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect a life dedicated to compassion, resilience, and uplifting others. Through my career as a NICU nurse and my advocacy for education, I hope to create a lasting impact that inspires future generations to chase their dreams and embrace the transformative power of knowledge. Education is the foundation of that vision, and it fuels my determination to make a meaningful difference in the world.

My passion for public service stems from my personal experiences and the challenges I have faced. Growing up in a single-mother household, I witnessed firsthand the impact of financial hardship and limited access to resources. These experiences instilled in me a deep desire to help others and inspired me to pursue a career in public service where I can make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
One of the defining aspects of my upbringing was watching my mother work tirelessly to provide for our family. I realized that public service is not just about addressing individual needs but also about creating opportunities and building a supportive community for those who are often overlooked.

Pursuing a career in public service offers me the opportunity to combine my passion for helping others with my desire to create systemic change. The rising cost of tuition and the burden of student loans are daunting, but my determination to serve others drives me forward. I am committed to finding solutions, whether through scholarships, part-time work, or community support, to achieve my goals and give back to the world in meaningful ways.
In the future, I hope to go beyond individual acts of service and contribute to systemic improvements in healthcare and mental health support. Her strength has not only shaped my character, but has also fueled my ambition to make a positive impact on the world.

My upbringing has prepared me to approach this role with empathy, resilience, and a deep commitment to making a difference.

The cost of college is a significant concern, and I am acutely aware of the sacrifices my mother and I will need to make to achieve my dreams. Yet, I am committed to finding ways to overcome these obstacles, whether through scholarships, part-time work, or careful budgeting. I see these challenges as opportunities to grow and further develop the resilience that my mother has modeled for me.

It begins in silence—a silence so loud it drowns out everything else. You lie awake at night, staring at the ceiling, feeling the weight of invisible chains holding you down. You want to scream, cry, or even laugh, but you can’t. This is what mental illness feels like: a constant battle fought in isolation, where the enemy is your own mind. My journey through depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts and attempts has been like walking a tightrope, balancing the hope of a brighter future with the fear of falling. Yet, through these experiences, I have discovered resilience, empathy, and purpose that guide my life today.
In high school, my struggle with mental health affected every aspect of my life—academically, socially, and personally. Every year began with optimism and determination. I wanted to excel in my classes, turn in every assignment, and prove to myself that I could reach my potential. But as the months wore on, anxiety began to seep in, making even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. Depression followed, sapping my energy and drowning my motivation. What once seemed manageable became daunting and felt unattainable, and I found myself trapped in a cycle of burnout and self-doubt.
These years were difficult, and financial worries compounded my anxiety. My family faced financial instability for much of my life, the majority of it as the cause of having to flee across the country from my domestically and mentally abusive step-father. The weight of those struggles often felt suffocating. Now, as I prepare for college, the uncertainty of how I will afford tuition and living expenses looms heavily over me. While I am determined to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse, these financial challenges are a constant source of stress. However, I have learned to channel my energy into finding solutions—whether it’s applying for scholarships or exploring work-study opportunities—to make my aspirations a reality.
Despite the challenges, my experiences with mental health have transformed my beliefs and relationships. I now believe in the power of open dialogue and support when it comes to mental health. Through my struggles, I’ve learned to foster empathy and understanding in my relationships, creating a safe space for those around me to share their own vulnerabilities. I strive to be a source of encouragement for others, knowing how much it means to have someone truly listen and understand.
My mental health journey has also shaped my career aspirations. I am pursuing nursing, specifically in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where I can care for the most vulnerable patients. The compassion and resilience I’ve developed have strengthened my determination to make a difference in the lives of others. I want to approach healthcare holistically, addressing not just physical health but also emotional and psychological well-being. This belief drives me to excel in my studies and prepare for a career where I can bring hope and healing to those who need it most.
My experiences with mental health have been transformative. They have shaped my beliefs, strengthened my relationships, and fueled my passion for nursing. As I step into college, I carry with me the lessons learned from my struggles and the determination to overcome the obstacles ahead. With resilience and hope as my foundation, I am ready to turn my challenges into opportunities to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Life rarely goes according to plan, and my academic journey is a testament to resilience in adversity. Growing up, I experienced struggles that tested not only my perseverance but also my mental and emotional strength. These challenges, while overwhelming at times, have shaped my determination to succeed and prepared me to face the next chapter of my life with renewed hope and enthusiasm.
The difficulties began at the end of my eighth-grade year when our family faced an unexpected financial crisis. My aunt and uncle owned the house we were living in, and it was understood that we would eventually pay it off and make it our own. However, they sold the house from beneath us, accusing my mother of theft and even attempting to send her to jail for items gifted by the previous owner. This traumatic event upended our lives and left us in financial turmoil. My family was forced to move 45 minutes away from my school, turning my education into an exhausting logistical challenge for my mother, who drove back and forth multiple times a day.
The instability disrupted my attendance, and I missed so many days of school that I almost faced truancy charges. With everything happening at home and the stress of commuting, I struggled to keep up with my schoolwork. Academic tasks that had once been manageable became overwhelming, and I found myself falling behind. This pattern persisted throughout high school, where I battled severe depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. The mental illness I grappled with made it nearly impossible to concentrate on assignments or manage the stress they brought. Every school year, I began with high hopes and a determination to excel, only to find myself overwhelmed and burnt out midway through.
Despite these hardships, my passion for helping others grew stronger. I was drawn to nursing—specifically neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nursing—where I could make a difference by caring for vulnerable infants and giving them a chance at life. My challenging experiences taught me empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of the struggles others might face, qualities I plan to bring to my nursing career.
As I approach college, I am filled with excitement for the opportunities it presents. Living on my own and stepping away from the environment that contributed to much of my anxiety and depression feels like a fresh start. I look forward to embracing the challenges of college life, both academically and personally. Studying nursing will not only be a stepping stone to fulfilling my career aspirations but also a chance to grow as an individual and prove to myself that I am capable of overcoming adversity.
To make the most of this new chapter, I plan to approach college with a balanced mindset. I have learned the importance of self-care and will prioritize my mental well-being alongside my academic responsibilities. By seeking out resources such as counseling and study support services, I aim to create a sustainable routine that allows me to manage stress effectively. I also hope to connect with professors and peers who share my passion for healthcare and build a network of support and inspiration.
In addition, I am determined to take advantage of every opportunity to grow. Whether it is through internships, volunteer work, or extracurricular activities, I want to immerse myself in experiences that will prepare me for the challenges and rewards of a nursing career. I know that my journey has equipped me with a unique perspective and a resilience that will serve me well in college and beyond.
In conclusion, the challenges I have faced in my academic journey have been defining moments in my life. They have tested my strength and determination, but they have also shaped me into a person who is ready to embrace new opportunities. My excitement for college stems from the chance to create a future rooted in hope and purpose. With nursing as my ultimate goal, I am determined to make the most of this new chapter and contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.
