I would like to introduce myself. My name is Natalie Jordan Yates McCarthy. I am currently a Senior at Valley High School in Valley, Alabama. I will graduate in May of 2022. I plan to begin my college career in the Fall of 2022. I want to become a pediatric psychiatrist.
Let me explain how I came up with this decision. My parents tell me that at an early age, they saw signs that something was not right. For example, I would complain about clothes feeling a certain way, certain textures of food would bother me, and I could not seem to focus on my reading lessons. My elementary teacher expressed her concern with my parents. The school gave me an exam to test me for Attention Deficit Disorder. My scores reflected that I had ADD. My pediatric physician was contacted to pursue getting the help I needed to succeed in school. She did not feel comfortable treating me for ADD. At this time, I was also showing signs of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and I had severe anxiety. I experienced some pretty hard feelings and I worried about everything. She referred me to a pediatric psychiatrist. I received an appointment after my doctor went through several offices. It was hard to find a pediatric psychiatrist and one that would take my insurance. I even had to wait a month or two to be seen by the doctor. I remember my parents saying there sure is a need for more doctors who see children with these issues. I finally was able to see the doctor and my parents explained the severity of my symptoms. He said that he wanted me to attend therapy sessions. I did attend therapy; however, this did not seem to help with what I was experiencing. Finally, my doctor tried me on a medication that should help. After taking it for 3 or 4 weeks, I did not see any results. As a matter of fact, I was prescribed many different types of medicines and none of them seemed to work. Finally, he gave one that seemed to help and I am still taking it to this day. This doctor left the practice and I was referred to another practice. I started seeing a doctor at this location but then he left and was only practicing in his hometown, which is about a 45 min to an hour drive from my home. My parents decided that we would just keep seeing this doctor because he was really nice and I liked him. After finding the right medication for me, I was able to focus in class and my grades came up. I still have anxiety and OCD but it is better.
I feel like I have the experience to help a child in need because of what I have experienced. I know my career choice will be a long and hard road but if I made it through my hardships, then I can deal with any situation. I am determined and strong-willed which are great assets to get me through my education. I would greatly appreciate being a recipient of this scholarship which would allow me to pursue the desires of my heart, which is to provide mental health care to a child in need and to help overcome mental health.
Sincerely,
Natalie McCarthy

I’ve had a lot of experiences in my past and some I still continue to have like my anxiety, ADHD, ADD and OCD.
My disability has taught me so much not just about myself but about others that suffer around me. You would think anxiety isn’t really a disability or at least that’s what I would’ve thought. But nothing ever is until you go through it yourself. You learn so much more than what you see from the outside.
I’ve suffered for about 8-10 years now(and ongoing) with ADHD, anxiety, OCD and ADD, it’s been a war, literally. Honestly it’s hard to express to a random person that I don’t even know what goes through my head daily, as I can’t even discuss some of the things with the people closest to me.But I have learned many many things from my past.
My disabilities tore me down at first. As a 8 year old girl I didn’t know what to think. All I knew was I wasn’t the happy little kid that should be playing and working hard at school. My grades were highly affected as I could never focus. At this point I had hit a end of a maze that I thought I would never get out of. I ended up going to therapy sessions, which didn’t work at all for me, I then got put on many many medications which we went through a lot before we found one that worked for me.Till this day I still suffer but I’ve learned some things about myself and my world around me. Growing up I had to learn how to cope with my disability and today I’ve taught myself tricks and ways to refocus my mind off of my fear. I’m stronger than what I ever would’ve thought!
Sincerely,
Natalie

I have adhd, add, ocd and anxiety and I stress a lot, sometimes over nothing. My anxiety tends to take over my mind it rushes over me like a wave and there is nothing much I can do except sit and drown. But there are a few things I can do to calm myself and my mind down. Music tends to calm my mind, the soft, smooth type of music helps me. Watching my favorite YouTube channel or show on Hulu helps me take my mind off of what I’m stressed over and focus on something else. Talking to my parents helps me feel relieved, like a thousand pounds had been lifted off my shoulders. And finally praying, praying that God take this thought, stress, vision, anxiety, or ocd away from me.
