District 27-A2 Lions Diabetes Awareness Scholarship
My grandpa has diabetes, so it is a topic in my family we talk about. My grandpa got diabetes from liver cancer after his liver transplant. Diabetes has shaped me by always wanting to spend as much time as possible with my grandparents, especially my grandpa. I research and want to learn more about diabetes because of my grandpa. What he has gone through and what he has overcome has given me the strength to keep pushing. I love my grandpa to pieces and he will forever and always be my hero. I look to him when I need help, need a laugh, want to hang out, just anything and he is always there for me. Diabetes can be a life killer and it is unbelievably sad. That is why I am proud to be related to my grandpa. I will always help him with anything he needs. He is always active and helping people, and honestly, if you didn't know him you wouldn't know he had diabetes and health issues.
This experience will impact my future by always caring for people, and especially not judging people for how they behave because I will never truly know what they are going through or have gone through. Diabetes is pushing me to want to eat healthy and make healthy choices for my body. I am very active in my school, community, and family. Everything I do is for them. I love representing my school through sports such as volleyball and track. I am a team leader on both and have received a varsity letter all four years. I'm very involved in my community by helping out with church fundraisers, raking leaves for the elderly, and picking up trash around town. I also am very involved with clubs at Horicon, such as the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Student Council, and Vice President of the senior class. I am also continuing my academic and athletic career at The University of Mary! I will be playing Division 2 volleyball and am excited to start this point in my life. Everything I do is for my grandpa, for his cancer and diabetes, and most importantly for his smile. My career plan is to become a Dietician, to inform people of healthy subjects such as diets. I want to help everyone not have to go through what my grandpa went through. My future may not have him in it, but he will always be in my heart and will always be the reason why I do the things I do.
