FinalistBio
My name is Natalia Castillo, I'm a Senior from Victoria West Highschool.
I was born in Mexico, and one and a half years ago my family and i decided to move to the U.S. looking for hope to save my mothers life.
Amidst the emotional turmoil, we faced the harsh reality of the financial strain it brought. To ensure my mother received the best treatment, we made the difficult decision to relocate to the United States, a move that exacerbated our financial burdens but was necessary for her survival.
Recently i got accepted into the PSA program at Texas A&M University to pursue my bachelor in Dance Science.
Receiving a scholarship would not only ease the financial pressure on my family but also provide me with the opportunity to pursue my passion for learning and contribute to society. It would allow me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies, without the distraction of worrying about tuition fees and expenses. Moreover, it would honor my mother's strength and perseverance, serving as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Cancer, a formidable adversary, knows no boundaries, affecting not only the individual diagnosed but also the entire family. My journey with cancer began when my mother received the devastating diagnosis. Amidst the emotional turmoil, we faced the harsh reality of the financial strain it brought. To ensure my mother received the best treatment, we made the difficult decision to relocate to the United States, a move that exacerbated our financial burdens but was necessary for her survival. The initial shock of the diagnosis sent ripples through our lives, disrupting our sense of normalcy. As my mother embarked on her treatment journey, our lives became a whirlwind of hospital visits, medical procedures, and overwhelming uncertainty. Alongside the emotional toll, the financial implications loomed large. Medical bills piled up, draining our savings and stretching our resources thin. The cost of treatment, coupled with everyday expenses, threened our financial stability. The decision to seek treatment in the United States was not made lightly. We knew it would require significant sacrifices, both emotionally and financially. However, we were determined to do whatever it took to give my mother the best chance at beating cancer. The move brought its own set of challenges, from navigating a new healthcare system to adjusting to a different culture. Yet, amidst the turmoil, there was a glimmer of hope - the promise of aces to cutting-edge treatments anu specialized care. Financially, the move placed a heavy burden on our family. From accommodation costs to medical expenses not covered by insurance, every dollar became precious. We had to make difficult choices and sacrifices, often foregoing luxuries and tightening our belts to make ends meet. Despite the challenges, witnessing my mother's resilience in the face of adversity inspired me to persevere. As I reflect on this journey, I am reminded of the profound impact it has had on my life. It taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of cherishing every moment. It also fueled my determination to pursue higher education and make a positive impact in the world. The financial strain of my mother's illness reinforced my commitment to securing scholarships to alleviate the burden on my family and pursue my academic goals. Receiving a scholarship would not only ease the financial pressure on my family but also provide me with the opportunity to pursue my passion for dancing and contribute to society. It would allow me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies, without the distraction of worrying about tuition fees and expenses. Moreover, it would honor my mother's strength and perseverance, serving as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
