My name is Nimo pronounced like "Naima". As a 19-year-old immigrant from Somalia, I will be the first generation in my family to graduate from college. I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Education with a minor in Psychology. As a black Muslim, I have faced a great deal of discrimination, including bullying for my appearance and language skills. It took me seven years to master English, including reading, writing, speaking, and understanding.
Throughout my childhood, I struggled with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and spent a lot of time in and out of hospitals. Unfortunately, this interfered with my education, and I had to repeat two years of elementary school. However, I never gave up. I fought against my illness and my bullies, determined to succeed. In middle school and high school, I worked hard to jump grades and catch up to my peers.
From a young age, I learned that I am in charge of my own life and that I control my own destiny. This belief has helped me to persevere through difficult times and continue striving for success. Despite the challenges I have faced, I am determined to make a difference in the world. With my degree in Education and minor in Psychology, I hope to help others overcome their own obstacles and achieve their dreams.

One of the most valuable pieces of financial advice I have received is the significance of establishing a solid financial foundation through effective money management and planning. This advice has not only shaped my perspective on personal finance but also plays a vital role in my approach to college and my future beyond.
Budgeting is a fundamental aspect of financial success, and it is a practice I intend to employ throughout my college career and beyond. By creating a comprehensive budget, I can gain a clear understanding of my income, expenses, and financial goals. This allows me to allocate my resources appropriately, prioritize essential expenses, and identify areas where I can cut back or save. Through disciplined budgeting, I can make informed decisions and ensure that I am living within my means.
In addition to budgeting, I have learned the importance of saving and building an emergency fund. Life is full of unexpected events, and having a financial safety net can provide stability and peace of mind. I plan to allocate a portion of my income to savings regularly, with the goal of building an emergency fund that covers at least six months' worth of living expenses. This will provide a buffer in case of unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies or unexpected financial setbacks.
Moreover, I recognize the significance of minimizing debt and making informed choices when it comes to student loans. While pursuing higher education, I aim to explore all available scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities to reduce the need for loans. By carefully considering the terms, interest rates, and repayment options associated with loans, I can make wise decisions that align with my long-term financial goals. I also plan to be proactive in seeking financial aid counseling and utilizing resources provided by my college to ensure I am making the most financially sound choices.
Throughout my college journey, I intend to apply this financial advice by establishing a detailed and realistic budget that accounts for tuition, textbooks, housing, meals, transportation, and other necessary expenses. By meticulously tracking my spending and evaluating it against my budget, I can make adjustments and find opportunities to save. I will explore cost-saving measures such as purchasing used textbooks, taking advantage of student discounts, and exploring affordable housing options.
To further enhance my financial literacy, I plan to seek out educational resources, attend workshops, and engage with personal finance experts. By expanding my knowledge in areas such as investing, retirement planning, and tax management, I can make informed financial decisions that align with my long-term aspirations. I believe that ongoing learning and staying up-to-date with financial trends and strategies are essential for building a secure and prosperous future.
In my pursuit of financial well-being, I have embraced the principles of effective financial management, which will continue to shape my journey beyond college. I am committed to prioritizing budgeting, saving, and responsible borrowing to build a solid financial foundation that empowers me to achieve my career goals. By adhering to a well-structured budget, I will ensure that my income is allocated wisely, allowing me to meet my financial obligations while also setting aside funds for future endeavors and unexpected expenses. Additionally, I plan to cultivate a habit of consistent saving, taking advantage of opportunities to grow my wealth and secure my financial future. I also recognize the importance of being mindful of debt and will approach borrowing responsibly, making informed decisions that align with my long-term financial objectives. Ultimately, I aim to achieve financial stability that enables me to pursue my passions and contribute positively to the world.
Additionally, I recognize the importance of giving back and making a positive impact on society. As I progress in my career and achieve financial stability, I aspire to support charitable causes and organizations that align with my values. I believe in the power of financial well-being not just for personal growth but also for creating opportunities to uplift others and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the advice I have received regarding budgeting, saving, and minimizing debt has shaped my financial mindset and will guide my actions throughout college and beyond. By implementing these principles, I am confident that I can establish a solid financial foundation, make prudent financial decisions, and work towards a secure and fulfilling future.

Richard Neumann Scholarship
To address the challenge of limited access to educational resources in underprivileged communities, I propose the establishment of Learning Vans. This mobile education initiative would utilize converted vans equipped with educational materials, technology, and qualified educators to bring learning opportunities directly to underserved areas.
The Learning Vans would visit different communities on a regular schedule, offering educational support and resources to learners of all ages. The vans would be equipped with laptops, tablets, and internet connectivity to facilitate interactive learning experiences. Qualified teachers and volunteers would lead engaging lessons and provide personalized guidance to the learners.
The plan involves the following steps:
Identifying Target Communities: Extensive research and collaboration with local organizations would help identify communities that lack sufficient educational resources and have limited access to schools or learning centers.
Van Conversion and Equipment: A van would be customized and equipped with portable learning resources, including laptops, tablets, educational software, books, and other materials. It would be designed to create a comfortable and engaging learning environment.
Curriculum Development: A flexible curriculum would be developed, aligning with local educational standards and tailored to meet the needs of the target communities. It would focus on core subjects, practical skills, and emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Community Engagement: Working closely with community leaders and organizations, the Learning Vans initiative would establish partnerships and build trust within the communities. Regular meetings and feedback sessions would be conducted to ensure the program meets the specific educational needs of each community.
Outreach and Schedule: Extensive outreach efforts would be made to inform the local population about the Learning Vans' schedule and the educational services they offer. The vans would visit communities on specific days or weeks, ensuring consistent access to educational support.
Collaborations with Local Schools: Collaborations with local schools and educational institutions would be sought to strengthen the impact of the Learning Vans. This would include sharing resources, expertise, and coordinating with teachers to align the curriculum and support ongoing learning.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Continuous monitoring and evaluation would be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the program and make necessary improvements. Feedback from learners, parents, and community members would be actively sought to ensure the program's relevance and impact.
Securing funding for the Learning Vans initiative would be crucial for its success. Partnerships with local businesses, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies could provide the necessary financial support and resources.
The Learning Vans initiative presents a realistic and scalable approach to address the issue of limited educational resources in underprivileged communities. By bringing education directly to these communities, we can make a meaningful impact on individuals' lives, empower them with knowledge and skills, and pave the way for a brighter future.
