Bio

Greetings! My name is Naamah Israel, and I am a first-generation college student presently enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. I am a nursing major with the ultimate goal of becoming an anesthesiologist or being able to administer anesthesia. My ambition has always been to become a doctor. I, too, enjoy assisting people. My motivation for becoming a doctor is to help patients who are similar to me, which means I want to make a difference in the health administration and medical system. It is no secret that people of color have not always been treated equally, and some continue to be mistreated even today. It is also difficult for many people to obtain and afford healthcare. I don't want everything to be solely up to me, but I do want to ensure that I make the difference I want to make. Growing up as a black female in this environment and studying my history has been eye-opening for me. Knowing my origins is essential to me because I believe that everyone should desire to know who they are and be able to find themselves as a person/whole.

A woman finds out that she is pregnant with her second child and even though she didn't plan for this to happen at this time she was glad when she found out the gender she was having a girl. She made sure she kept up with her doctor visits and sonograms. Her baby was growing and growing she was glad that her baby was healthy or so she thought she was. At one doctor visit she was told that her baby might not even make it through the full pregnancy or if she does she would not be "normal", the doctors tried to encourage her to get rid of her baby but this lady said no she is going to go through. 5 more months go by and she is in labor, she was able to deliver her beautiful baby girl which means she survived the whole pregnancy. But there was something different about this baby, her lip wasn't fully developed when she was born. She was born with a cleft lip. This woman was still very in love with her first daughter this lady is my mother. From the day I came from my mother I was born with a cleft lip which in summary means that my lip wasn't fully developed when I came out of the womb. When I was younger this would make me self-conscious about how I looked to other people, I never thought I was pretty enough. Little kids are brutal...my time in elementary I was bullied for my looks which made me feel even worse about myself. As I got older I realized that what I look like doesn't matter as much as how I act and treat people, I think many need to reflect on that. Having a bitter attitude and being rude to someone just because you feel like will get you nowhere in life. Growing up it has always been a dream of mine to go to college, I just needed a career path to start with. I started by saying I would like to be a pediatrician and work with children but as I got older I changed my mind. I then said that I wanted to be a surgeon, then I realized that cutting open skin and looking at organs for too long would make me feel queasy. Then I talked with my mom, this was when I was about 12 years old and we started talking about anesthesiologists. Being a doctor has been all I have wanted since I was a child. My surgeon was the one who inspired me. Now an anesthesiologist isn't a surgeon but they most definitely have an important role when it comes to surgeries. I want to be able to help people in the healthcare system. Being able to have the chance to make a difference in my community and my life would make me feel whole. Also being a black woman in this world means much. We have not always been appreciated as a people for many stereotypical reasons. Being a minority in this world is an honor even though we have been discriminated against, we have grown as a nation. Being able to achieve my goal of wanting to become a doctor will also allow me to play a huge role for the minorities who don't get the treatment that they deserve. Everything that I have been through has led me up to this point in my life and has made me the best person that I can be today.

A young man has been in a fatal accident, he has gotten rushed to the hospital, his mother is crying for help because her son is unconscious and his pulse is very faint from the looks of this his chances seem to be extremely low. His mother is asking for help and it seems to look like everyone is not taking this situation as serious as it should be, when this is a traumatic situation. Later on, this boy passed can you guess his race? Studies have shown that 1 in 5 black deaths happen earlier in hospitals than if they were white. This is not a common worry to most hospitals because many lack the care. Most hospitals will treat many people differently because of their skin color. Now the question "Why do I aspire to become a doctor?" I aspire to become a doctor to help people out there that may not be able to speak up. I want to be a shoulder that they can lean on when they need care, advice, love, etc. When you go into a doctor's office there is a lot of anxiety and stress because depending on the condition you have, the situation you are in, or even if you are having a bad day you are putting your trust in this doctor hoping that they will be there for you. I am passionate about becoming a medical doctor because I care for others. This world is cruel and though you may expect people to be nice to you there will be a chance that they won't be, and going into the medical field you are taking a huge risk because you might have patients that won't cooperate with you or they might not even like you, it's up to you to keep your composure. The question above "What type of books have you read along with social and charitable activities that you have participated in that you believe have shaped the person that you are?" If I am being honest I don't remember any books I have read to help me become the person that I am today. I believe that I have been influenced by those around me and the people that I surround myself with, having people around that will support me, and be positive but also give constructive criticism has helped me form into the person that I am today. I was never a girl that would be brave enough to make friends on my own my little sister helped me with everything. But growing up and experiencing new things has made an impact on who I am today. I am a black woman in America striving to become a doctor making sure I lead myself in the right direction. One phrase that I always keep embedded in my mind is what princess Tiana sang "Im almost there.".

Imagine just sitting home and hanging with family having a great time and then being alarmed by an enormous disaster that will be heading your way, what would you think to do? In August 2005 hurricane Katrina started and even though I don't live in Louisiana I do have family there that was affected by this storm. Not knowing what to do and panicking in this situation my family's homes here destroyed and even more around them. Having people there to support you in situations like this is as much as you need at that moment. They rebuilt and were strong throughout this disaster. Another story that has affected me is this happened recently my mother's friend and son were killed in a tornado storm that also happened in the state of Louisiana. His mother was in the trailer they didn't live in the city they lived more in the country, and her son was playing outside. The tornado took the trailer that she was in and must have dropped her back down, the same thing happened to her son but he wasn't protected by anything, so the storm also took him and dropped him down as well. I am not explaining this story very well mainly because it is a touchy subject to talk about and I don't want to go too much into detail mainly for respect. But I am sharing this story for awareness. I always want to be a helpmeet to people, helping and being positive in my life has been the greatest experience that I have has so far. There may be ups and downs in life but that shouldn't stop you from being the great person that you are. Contributing to community service and helping others that need it is always something that I am up to. I love to donate, put in the work, create effective things, and be there for people. Being able to create a place where people can come and get shelter, food, water, and even hygiene products would be a great substance for the community. I have been inspired by many seeing videos of people that are getting the help that they deserve is what warms my heart. For natural disasters that happen to help the families that have been affected by loss in many things is very good to do as a community. Or having a fundraiser for those that have lost their homes, cars, and all of their memories that they have cherished even though they aren't able to get those back just being there and making sure that you can give them anything in this situation would mean a lot. I would like to state that even though I am just one person even I can make a difference, it is not just up to me but being able to have a community to form in unity would be even more of a difference
