As a Black woman who has personally navigated the labyrinth of mental health challenges during my teenage years, I have come to realize the profound dearth of resources and the stifling stigma surrounding mental health issues within the Black community. These experiences have ignited a passion within me to make a positive impact in the mental health field, particularly among Black youth. In this essay, I will share how my struggles, combined with my volunteer work, have profoundly influenced my beliefs, activism, and career aspirations in the realm of mental health. Additionally, I will discuss my latest initiative: a blog aimed at sharing my journey and providing mental health resources and tips.
My journey through adolescence was marked by the shadow of mental health challenges. The intersection of being a Black woman and a teenager posed unique obstacles, and I soon discovered the harsh reality of limited resources and an overwhelming stigma surrounding mental health issues in my community. The lack of accessible and culturally sensitive support deepened my struggles and isolation, prompting me to question why this was the case.
My personal experiences catalyzed my deep-rooted passion for mental health advocacy. The turning point came when I participated in my school's alternative spring break program in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During that week, I had the opportunity to work with Black youth, educating them about the vital importance of both physical and mental health. Witnessing the profound impact we had on these young minds, seeing their perspectives shift, and recognizing the empowerment that knowledge brought them, left an indelible mark on my heart. My time spent in Milwaukee solidified my belief that I needed to be part of the solution. I witnessed firsthand the power of breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly within the Black community. Connecting with these young individuals, I saw hope bloom, and it fueled my determination to continue this work. Their stories of resilience and their courage to address their mental health struggles only further inspired me.
Motivated by this passion, I embarked on my academic journey, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Biology. This educational path aligns perfectly with my goal of making a lasting impact in the mental health field. I am committed to gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to create change at a systemic level. I aspire to attend graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, equipping myself with the expertise needed to develop and implement culturally competent mental health programs that specifically cater to marginalized communities.
In my pursuit of raising awareness and providing support for mental health, I have started a blog. This platform serves as an extension of my advocacy work, where I share my own personal journey, the challenges I've faced, and the triumphs I've achieved. More importantly, it serves as a resource hub where I compile a variety of mental health resources and tips. My blog aims to break down barriers to access by offering valuable information and support to anyone in need, especially those from marginalized communities.
I am resolute in my path towards earning a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, as it will enable me to contribute meaningfully to the mental health field and empower marginalized communities, especially Black youth, to embrace their mental well-being without fear or shame. My journey has just begun, and I am ready to champion this cause with unwavering dedication, both in the academic and online spaces, through my blog and the resources it provides.

Charles E. Nettles Continued Graduate Scholarship
As I stand on the brink of completing my undergraduate studies at Howard University, I am driven by an unrelenting commitment to continue my education beyond graduation. My academic journey has been marked by a profound passion for psychology and biology, coupled with a relentless desire to effect change in the realm of mental health. Therefore, my post-graduation plans revolve around pursuing a master's program and later a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, with a steadfast focus on making a positive impact on the lives of Black adolescents and marginalized communities.
The decision to continue my education in the field of Clinical Psychology is rooted in both personal experiences and a broader societal need. Throughout my teenage years, I grappled with my mental health challenges, which opened my eyes to the stark disparities in mental health resources and the pervasive stigma surrounding mental health issues in the Black community. These experiences solidified my determination to work towards equitable access to mental health care.
Upon graduating from Howard University, I intend to enroll in a master's program in Clinical Psychology. This program will serve as a crucial stepping stone toward my ultimate goal of earning a Ph.D. in the same field. A master's degree will equip me with essential clinical skills and knowledge, enabling me to provide immediate support and intervention to individuals in need. Moreover, it will bolster my understanding of evidence-based practices and the cultural competence required to address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly Black adolescents.
In the master's program, I'll immerse myself in rigorous coursework and clinical training, focusing on assessment, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatments for mental health disorders. I aim to gain proficiency in therapeutic techniques that can be tailored to the specific needs of Black adolescents, taking into account the cultural factors that influence their experiences.
Furthermore, I plan to use this phase of my education to deepen my involvement in research related to mental health disparities. This research will not only contribute to the academic discourse but also inform and improve the quality of care I provide as a clinician. I intend to bridge the gap between research and practice, ensuring that the latest evidence-based interventions are accessible to underserved communities.
My long-term vision, following the completion of my master's program, is to pursue a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. This terminal degree will provide me with the expertise needed to contribute meaningfully to the mental health field at both the individual and systemic levels. My research will focus on developing culturally competent interventions and programs that address the mental health needs of Black adolescents.
I aspire to create innovative mental health initiatives and interventions that empower marginalized communities to seek help without fear or stigma. This includes developing educational programs, support networks, and advocacy efforts aimed at eradicating the disparities that hinder access to mental health care.
Pursuing a master's program and, subsequently, a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is not just a career choice; it is a calling to address the pressing mental health disparities that disproportionately affect underserved populations. I am acutely aware of the urgency of this mission and the responsibility that comes with it. Through my advanced education, I will gain the knowledge, skills, and experience required to effect change in the mental health field. I am resolute in my dedication to breaking down barriers, reducing stigma, and ensuring that mental health care is equitable and accessible to all. With each step of my educational journey, I will be better equipped to fulfill this mission, working tirelessly to create a brighter, more inclusive future for those who need it most.
