Growing up in Philadelphia as a Muslim with immigrant parents has been culturally exceptional. With those benefits came many struggles that I praise and thank Allah for. Since overcoming those fears of being an outcast in America, I’ve learned to not only embrace, but be proud of my religion and culture. My name is Mosin, the son of Abdul Aziz Ghafary, and I am a rising senior at The Pennsylvania State University in Abington. Majoring in Business Management & Marketing, I am currently employed with the sales division at Macy’s. I picked up this responsibility despite being in college to further assist my family seeking to ease their burden.
Islam definitely comes first in my life, and I am grateful to Allah for this guidance He has given me to be heavily involved in the Muslim Community here in Philadelphia. From delivering the weekly sermons to managing the media, I like to be productive in the MSA here at Penn and the first and only mosque in Center City, Philadelphia, self titled: Center City Mosque. We have an exciting, newly formed organization: Philly Muslim Initiatives (phillymi.com) which serves the Muslim community to provide Islamic classes, family gatherings and organizes sports leagues and a variety of events. It brings me joy to admit that I am one of the leading members in the Media team as Quality Control and Media Coordinator.
Complaining should only be done to Allah, not to mention seeking assistance. However, due to the current financial circumstances that my family and I are going through, I am in great need of this assistance. PMI, Center City Mosque and the MSA at Penn have more right to my undivided dedication, hard work and time than a company like Macy’s. I hate that I have to sacrifice so much time working when I could be growing these initiatives. My career path at Penn will also allow me to have a balanced work-to-Dawah ratio after graduation. This money will ease a burden of mine and allow me to continue to work in serving Allah and open more opportunities for me and the ummah at large. With all that being said, I feel that I would be a great investment to be chosen for this scholarship.
Finally, I would like to thank you for starting this scholarship program. I ask Allah to reward you generously as well as everyone involved. For the recipient of this scholarship, I hope they put it to good use, and I ask Ar-Razaq to make us all a way out of our hardships.

Here we have soon to be mama Aushak! Aushak is an Afghan cuisine, of which all our pets are named after a dish. Essentially a fried Afghan Dumpling, soon to have some of her own dumplings!

The second and third picture is Pista, meaning pistachio! The most lively little feline we’ve ever had.

This is Aushak when she was just a few months old. One of the most interesting coats we’ve ever seen.
