I embody selflessness in my career as a Nurse. Nurses are one of the most selfless professionals in the field of healthcare. We are the front lines who devote our time, energy, and expertise to taking care of the sick, the injured, and the dying. We put the needs of others before our own and provide compassionate care without expecting anything in return. One of the most fundamental qualities that nurses and I possess is the ability to actively listen and understand the needs of our patients. From a patient's perspective, a nurse who listens attentively is therapeutic in itself. Patients feel cared for and comforted knowing that their nurse is there to listen and respond to their needs. Another example of how I, as a nurse, embody selflessness is their willingness to work long hours, including holidays, weekends, and night shifts. Nurses do not just provide care based on their contractual obligations, but we go above and beyond to ensure that our patients receive the care they need, regardless of the time of day or night. I, as a nurse, also demonstrate selflessness in my willingness to undertake tasks that are not typically within our job description. This includes doing small things like making a phone call on behalf of the patient or family member or spending extra time to explain complicated medical jargon to a patient or family member who might not understand. Furthermore, I, as a nurse, make it a priority to provide continuity of care for our patients. This ensures that my patients receive the same level of care whether they are in the hospital or out in the community. I advocate for my patients to ensure that they receive the best possible care, even if it means standing up to my colleagues or superiors. Additionally, I, as a nurse, display selflessness by providing emotional support to my patients and family member. I provide a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, and a comforting presence. I take the time to understand the fears and concerns of my patients and help them to cope with their illness or injury. Lastly, I, as a nurse, demonstrate selflessness is through my commitment to lifelong learning. I am continuously updating and adapting my knowledge and skills to meet the changing needs of patients and my community. This is why I have decided to pursue my Master's in Nursing Education. Additionally, I attend conferences and continuing education courses to stay relevant and knowledgeable about evidence-based practice.
    Disney Super Fan Scholarship
As someone who grew up during the height of Disney's Renaissance era in the 1990s, there is nothing quite like the feeling of nostalgia and joy that flood my mind whenever I think about the House of Mouse. From timeless classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Cinderella to the groundbreaking animated features of The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Disney has always had a way of capturing our imaginations and reminding us of the best parts of my childhood. But beyond the movies, themselves, my favorite thing about Disney is the way it brings back memories of trips to Disneyland with my family. I can remember driving down to California from our home in Wisconsin, my sister and I furiously coloring in coloring books and playing "I Spy" in the backseat, all the while buzzing with excitement over the magic that awaited us. Once we arrived at Disneyland, everything felt different. The air was alive with the sounds of children laughing and families chattering excitedly, the smell of popcorn and cotton candy wafting through the air. We would always start our day by walking through the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle, marveling at all the shimmering gold and sparkling jewels that adorned its walls. And then, it was off to explore the park. There was something so special about Disneyland that made it more than just any old amusement park. It was an experience. It was about meeting your favorite characters and getting a picture taken with them, riding the teacups and feeling the wind whip through your hair, or buying a Mickey Mouse-shaped popsicle and eating it while watching the parade pass by. It was about the atmosphere of hope and joy that permeated everything, even when you were waiting in a long line in the hot sun. For me, the best part of Disneyland was always meeting the princesses. We would get in line for hours just for the chance to have Snow White or Belle or Jasmine sign our autograph books and take a picture with us. But my favorite princess of all was Cinderella. There was something about her grace and beauty that captivated me, and I was over the moon every time we got to see her. I remember one time when we were waiting to meet her, and my dad asked the Cast Member if we could go in the back way so we could skip the line. The Cast Member looked at us skeptically but then nodded and led us backstage. We were walking down a narrow concrete pathway when suddenly, there she was: Cinderella, in all her glittering splendor, waiting to greet us with a smile. I couldn't believe it. Now, as an adult, those memories of Disneyland and meeting the princesses feel so incredibly precious to me. They are moments that I cherish, not just for their sparkling magic and whimsy, but for the sense of togetherness and love that they represent. As we've all grown up and gone our separate ways, those Disney trips have become harder and harder to coordinate. But I hold those memories close, like a comforting blanket on a chilly night, and they bring me back to a simpler time when anything felt possible and all that mattered was spending time with the people you loved.

Growing up, mental health was always a part of my life. My grandmother had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and it was something that my family had to adjust to; It was not easy seeing her struggle. As I got older, I began to experience struggles with mental health, primarily anxiety. It was difficult to feel like I was not doing enough to help myself. These experiences heavily influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. One of the positive experiences I had with the mental health industry was meeting people who were genuinely caring and wanted to help. During my grandmother’s struggles, my family met many nurses and doctors who were incredibly understanding and compassionate. Similarly, when I started seeking help for my anxiety, I met therapists and providers who were patient and understanding. They listened to my concerns and helped me develop tools to manage my anxiety. These experiences showed me the importance of empathy and kindness in healthcare. However, there were also negative experiences with the mental health industry. One of the biggest issues was the long waitlists. It felt like we would wait weeks, sometimes even months, just to see a specialist. Similarly, when I was seeking help for my anxiety, I had to wait several weeks before getting an appointment. This only added to the anxiety and stress I was already feeling. Another issue that I came across was insurance constraints. Mental health treatment can be costly, and insurance companies do not always cover the full cost of treatment. This left some of my family members unable to continue with treatment because they could not afford it. This can be extremely frustrating for someone who is seeking help and feels like they cannot access it because of financial constraints. Because of these positive and negative experiences, I developed a strong belief in the importance of mental healthcare and its accessibility to everyone. I believe that mental health should be treated with the same importance as physical health. Every person deserves quality mental healthcare and it should not be limited by insurance constraints or waitlists. This belief has influenced my career aspirations. I have always wanted to become a nurse, but it was my experiences with mental health that ignited my passion for healthcare. As a nurse, I hope to be able to provide compassionate care to those struggling with mental health. I want to be able to make a difference in people's lives and help alleviate some of the struggles they face. My experiences with mental health have shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. While there were positive experiences with mental health professionals, there were also negative experiences with long waitlists and insurance constraints. However, these experiences only solidified my belief in the importance of mental healthcare and its accessibility to everyone. As a nurse, I hope to be able to make a difference in people's lives and provide quality mental healthcare.

Living sustainably is a lifestyle that I have intentionally chosen to practice in my daily life. The idea of sustainability centers around preserving the planet’s resources and creating a healthy balance between humans and nature. I believe that by living sustainably, I am not only benefiting the environment but also contributing to a better future for generations to come. In this essay, I will detail my intentional choices to live sustainably and why I think it is important to reduce my carbon footprint. One of the most significant choices I have made to live sustainably is to implement the three R’s- Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. I try to minimize my consumption of single-use plastics by carrying my reusable water bottle and grocery bag while shopping for groceries. Recycling is also an essential part of this process, and I separate the recyclable materials from my waste and dispose of them appropriately. Another intentional choice I make to live sustainably is by reducing my meat consumption. I have opted for a predominantly plant-based diet, and when I do consume meat, I ensure that it is ethically sourced. This choice is crucial because the meat industry is a significant contributor to carbon emissions and is environmentally destructive. By reducing my meat consumption, I am also minimizing my carbon footprint. Using public transportation, walking, and cycling are some of the choices I have made to reduce my carbon footprint. I try to avoid using a car whenever possible, and I am fortunate to live in a city that has a reliable public transportation system. Walking and cycling are not only environmentally friendly but also good for my health. These choices have helped me contribute to reducing the number of greenhouse gases emitted by vehicles. I also try to use sustainable and eco-friendly products whenever possible. Instead of using plastic products, I choose to use products made of reusable and biodegradable materials. I also use natural and non-toxic cleaning products that are free from harmful chemicals. Using these products not only benefits the environment but is also healthier for my family and me. Reducing my carbon footprint is important because it helps to minimize the adverse impact on the environment. The increase in carbon emissions has contributed to climate change, which poses a threat to the planet’s ecosystems and the survival of humans and other living beings. Climate change has resulted in extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels, and rising temperatures, leading to devastating environmental and humanitarian consequences. Reducing carbon footprint also has the potential to contribute to the economy. By promoting sustainable living practices, businesses can save on resources and lower their operational costs. Embracing sustainable lifestyles can also lead to the creation of sustainable jobs and development. Evidence shows that by changing our daily habits to live sustainably, we can protect the environment, improve our health, and create a better future for generations to come.

Apart from nursing, another passion that has always been central to my life is heavy metal music. The music represents an escape from the mundane and stimulates my creative energy. To me, heavy metal music symbolizes freedom of thought, individuality, and creativity. The genre's lyrics and themes often delve into dark, taboo subjects, but they also inspire listeners to think critically and question the status quo. For many fans like myself, heavy metal is a way to express themselves and find a sense of belonging. I am committed to making a difference in the nursing profession. My academic goals include maintaining above a 3.5 GPA in my master's program and obtaining a job as a nurse educator, and becoming certified in nursing education. Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
As a registered nurse, I know first-hand the significant impact technology can have on healthcare. Specifically related to nursing, new technology has helped to improve patient outcomes, reduce medication errors, increase patient satisfaction, and streamline patient care. The use of technology in nursing has transformed the way nurses approach their daily tasks, making it easier and more efficient. One of the most important benefits of new technology in nursing is improved patient outcomes. With electronic health records (EHR) and advanced monitoring systems, nurses can keep track of patient progress, identify potential problems, and intervene before a medical crisis occurs. Improved patient outcomes also include reducing readmission rates, lowering healthcare costs, and increasing the quality of care. Technology has also helped to reduce medication errors. Nurses now have access to medication administration software that assists in ensuring the correct medication, dose, and frequency are given to the patient. Electronic medication dispensing systems have also aided in preventing medication errors by alerting nurses if the wrong drug or dose is being administered. Increased patient satisfaction is another benefit of new technology in nursing. Patients are more likely to feel involved in their care with the use of technology-supported communication and education modules. Electronic health records also provide patients with their healthcare information, which helps them understand their medical histories and reinforces their ability to communicate their health needs effectively. New technology also streamlines patient care. Smart beds, patient monitors, and electronic charting systems help nurses provide timely and accurate care. Smart beds are used to monitor vital signs and detect potential falls, allowing the nurse to focus on other essential duties. Patient monitors also alert nurses of changes in vital signs or any predetermined alarms, informing them of the need for further assessment. Electronic charting systems also make it easier to communicate patient information and prevent the loss of vital information. The use of new technology in nursing is making the world a better place. Improved patient outcomes, reduced medication errors, increased patient satisfaction, and streamlined patient care are only a few of the essential benefits. By reducing the workload of nurses, technology is increasing the quality of patient care, which is ultimately improving the health and well-being of patients all around the world. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect further advancements in the healthcare field, providing more benefits for nursing and the overall healthcare system.

Growing up, I was always taught the value of giving back to my community, and this became a passion of mine as I got older. Whether it was volunteering at a local soup kitchen or assisting with community projects, I found that helping others brought me a sense of fulfillment that was unparalleled. This passion for service, combined with a deep and personal understanding of the impact of cancer, ultimately led me to pursue a career in nursing. My family has a long history of cancer diagnosis, and my aunt lost her battle with the disease in 2018. Watching her fight against cancer was both heartbreaking and inspiring, as I witnessed the incredible strength and resilience of the human spirit. It was during this time that I first began to consider nursing as a way to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating illness. As I began to explore the field of nursing, I was struck by the diversity of opportunities available to me. I could specialize in oncology, pediatric care, or mental health, just to name a few options. This breadth of knowledge and expertise was incredibly appealing, as I knew that it would allow me to make a difference in a variety of different settings and with a wide range of patients. In 2020, I graduated with my Bachelor of Nursing degree and became a registered nurse. I initially started my career as an inpatient pediatric nurse and ultimately decided to pursue my Master's in Nursing Education. This decision was motivated by a desire to have a better work-life balance while still actively promoting the field of nursing. With a master's in nursing education, I will be equipped to teach and train future nurses, helping to ensure that the profession continues to evolve and grow. I am passionate about the power of education, and I believe that educating the next generation of nurses is one of the most important ways to make a difference in the field. For me, nursing is more than just a career—it's a calling. I am deeply committed to helping others, and I know that nursing is the best way to do that. Whether I'm working in a hospital, teaching future nurses, or volunteering in my community, I know that every action I take is making a real difference in the world. I am incredibly excited to explore all the possibilities that nursing has to offer, and I look forward to a long and fulfilling career in the field.
    Your Health Journey Scholarship
Once I was able to make my own decisions regarding food, I developed unhealthy eating habits. My go-to meals were fast food, junk food, and anything that I could microwave or get through a drive-through window. I never thought about nutrition or the consequences of my eating choices. As a result, I was always tired, lacked energy and motivation, and felt physically uncomfortable. Eventually, I realized that my unhealthy eating habits were affecting my overall health and well-being. I noticed that I was gaining weight, my skin was breaking out, and I was feeling more sluggish than ever before. That’s when I decided it was time to make some significant lifestyle changes. I started by researching nutrition and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. I learned that proper nutrition is not just about eating healthy foods but also about living an overall healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, meditation, and eating a balanced diet. I knew that I had to take a holistic approach to my health, so I started researching the best ways to approach my new journey. I started by incorporating exercise into my daily routine. At first, it was challenging, and I wasn’t sure where to start. However, I found that swimming was my favorite activity because it was low-impact yet provided an excellent total-body workout. I also started going for walks regularly since it was an effective way to get my heart rate up and get some fresh air. In addition to regular physical activity, I started packing my lunch, cooking meals at home, and eating dinner with my family. This way, I could control the portions and ensure I was eating healthy foods. By packing my lunch, I was less likely to grab fast food out of convenience. I also made a point to eat more fruits and vegetables every day, cut back on sugar and alcohol, and drink plenty of water. In addition, I added fish, nuts, and other healthy fats to my diet, which helped me feel satisfied and helped my body recover from workouts. Additionally, I began taking care of my mental health by practicing meditation, yoga, and mindfulness techniques. I found that these methods helped me manage my stress level, improve my focus and concentration, and gave me a sense of calmness that allowed me to sleep better. As a result of these healthy lifestyle changes, I have lost weight, gained muscle, and felt more energized than ever before. I have also noticed significant improvements in my mood, motivation, and overall well-being. I am happy that I chose to take control of my health, and I am excited to continue my journey toward a healthy lifestyle.
    Mind, Body, & Soul Scholarship
As a graduate nursing student, I am excited about the prospect of continuing my education to obtain my master's in nursing education. The best thing about college, to me, is the opportunity to learn more information and expand my knowledge base. Every day, I can indulge in my passion for nursing, and further develop my understanding of this dynamic and complex field. I am beyond excited to gain more knowledge in a subject that I am passionate about and to ultimately use that knowledge to help others. Apart from studying and learning, one of the greatest joys of college life for me is spending time with my friends. I have made so many wonderful friendships in college, and these people have become my support system throughout the rigorous academic journey. Studying can be mentally draining and emotionally taxing at times, but having a circle of friends that I can rely on makes the experience so much more enjoyable. On days when I feel especially stressed or overwhelmed, I can turn to my friends for a good laugh and a much-needed break. While studying is a priority, I also believe that it is important to take some time off to recharge and do the things that bring us joy. Despite the joys of college life, it can be a struggle to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst the financial strains of college. Expenses such as tuition, books, and rent, can place a tremendous burden on college students, and navigating through these difficulties can be quite stressful. However, I have found that taking care of myself both mentally and physically, has allowed me to better tackle these challenges head-on. To maintain a healthy mind, I schedule regular check-ins with myself, as well as time with family and friends. I use these interactions as a way to recalibrate and recharge my mental energy, and it has truly been a game-changer. I also make sure to give myself breaks throughout the day and engage in activities such as meditation, to keep my mind centered and focused. To take care of my physical well-being, I make it a point to eat right and exercise regularly. In college, it can be all too easy to indulge in unhealthy snacks and fast food, but I prioritize nutritious meals that incorporate healthy fats, proteins, and whole grains. I also try to incorporate a workout routine into my daily schedule, making sure to get some movement in each day, whether it be through walking, swimming, or weightlifting. These activities not only keep me physically fit, but they also provide a much-needed mental break and allow me to disconnect from my academic responsibilities. In addition to these healthy habits, treating myself when appropriate is also important. Whether it be getting a manicure or buying a new pair of shoes, rewarding myself after accomplishing a milestone is a great way to boost my self-confidence and keep myself motivated. I have found that a little bit of self-care can go a long way and helps me stay focused and energized throughout the semester. Overall, college life can be challenging, but learning more information about becoming a nurse educator and spending time with friends keeps me motivated and excited. Though financial struggles try to weigh me down, I maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul by spending time with loved ones and releasing stress by working out and eating right. It's important to remember that taking care of yourself is just as important as studying, and that balance is key to achieving success.
    Healthy Eating Scholarship
As a registered nurse, I know healthy eating habits are essential when it comes to promoting a balanced life, and the benefits of maintaining them extend to overall health, including physical wellness and mental health. A mind, body, and spirit connection exists among these three aspects, and by nourishing the body with whole foods, it becomes possible to achieve a sound body and a healthy mind. Proper nutrition is undoubtedly critical, promoting healthy metabolism, reducing inflammation, and supporting bodily functions. Eating a healthy diet generally improves one's mental health and protects against mental illness. The brain needs nutrients to grow and function correctly; therefore, feeding the body with essential nutrients from whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables, promotes a sound mind. Including fish that is high in omega-3 fatty acids is also important for maintaining mental health. Omega-3s are linked to decreasing the severity of depression and promoting brain development. A study by the Mental Health Foundation shows that individuals who eat fruits and vegetables regularly have a higher level of self-esteem and feel more optimistic about life than those who do not. What we consume can impact our emotions and general outlook on life. Eating a balanced diet also enhances physical well-being and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. A diet that is rich in fiber, whole grains, and has a low glycemic load can help maintain a healthy weight. Obesity can lead to maladies such as heart disease and more. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), unhealthy eating habits can also lead to heart disease, diabetes, strokes, and various cancers. Consumption of whole foods high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties reduces the likelihood of contracting certain chronic diseases. On a personal level, I found that when I practice healthy eating habits, my mental health clears, and I feel physically superior. It could be the fruits and vegetables phytochemicals providing essential nutrients to my brain. These phytochemicals, found in nourishing natural foods, have been linked to reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, essential factors that contribute to improved mental clarity, memory, and mood. I also find myself less groggy and energetic, which allows me to be productive throughout the day. This in turn makes me feel motivated to make better food choices. In conclusion, maintaining healthy eating habits is essential to a sound body, mind, and spirit. When we consume whole, balanced meals, we enhance our emotional, cognitive, and physical well-being. Apart from keeping the body in good health and reducing inflammation, nutrient-rich foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties can guard against chronic diseases. Therefore, a healthy diet is crucial for achieving overall wellness.
    Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
Growing up, I was always fond of helping people and being involved in community service activities. I found joy in making a difference in the lives of others and ensuring that my surrounding environment was a better place for everyone. It was this passion for serving others that fueled my decision to pursue a career in nursing. As I progressed through high school, I began to identify what career path I wanted to follow. My love for science and passion for serving others aligned perfectly with the nursing profession. Upon delving deeper into the field of nursing, I became aware of the flexibility and diversity of the profession which fascinated me. The opportunity to work in various clinical and non-clinical settings, specializing in any field of interest and the opportunity to work in teams to design and implement care plans further reinforced my decision to pursue a career in nursing. Furthermore, I strongly believe that healthcare is a fundamental right that everyone should have access to, regardless of their socio-economic status, race, or ethnicity. In many parts of my community, there is a significant gap in healthcare services, especially for underserved populations. Many people in my community do not have access to basic healthcare services due to financial constraints, lack of insurance, or lack of outreach. This, coupled with my passion for serving others, motivated me to pursue nursing as a way to bridge these gaps and help my community. As a nurse, I believe that I will have an impact on the quality of life of my patients, their families, and the community as a whole. Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare system, and their role in promoting health, preventing diseases, and advocating for the well-being of patients cannot be overstated. I am excited about the prospect of being part of a profession that has such a critical role in society. The decision to pursue a career in nursing was based on my passion for helping people and my desire to make a positive impact in my community. I am confident that nursing will not only provide me with a fulfilling career but also, it will be an opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. I see nursing as a calling, and therefore, I am committed to giving back to my community and utilizing my skills and knowledge to improve the lives of others.

Breast health education is incredibly important to me because breast cancer has significantly impacted my life. Working as a nurse, I see firsthand the devastating effects that breast cancer can have on a person and their loved ones. But even before that, breast cancer had hit close to home for my family. My aunt, who was a dedicated math teacher for 35 years, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She was a vivacious person - always cracking jokes and making everyone around her laugh. Her battle with breast cancer was difficult, but she maintained her positive attitude and determination throughout the entire process. She underwent numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatments, and surgeries. Despite her strength and bravery, my aunt's cancer eventually metastasized and spread to other parts of her body. She passed away in 2018 after a long battle with the disease. Losing her was devastating for our family. Her experience taught me just how important it is for people to know about breast health and the steps they can take to prevent and detect breast cancer early. As a nurse, I have seen the profound difference that early detection can make in the prognosis of breast cancer patients. When breast cancer is detected early, it is much easier to treat and can often be cured completely. However, when it is caught at a later stage, it is much more difficult to treat and the chances of survival decrease significantly. That is why education about breast health and the importance of regular check-ups is so critical. But breast health education goes beyond simply encouraging people to get mammograms. It also involves educating people about the risk factors associated with breast cancer and the steps they can take to reduce their risk. For example, maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, avoiding tobacco and alcohol use, and limiting exposure to environmental toxins are all ways to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. These factors also improve overall individual health. Breast health education is also important because it empowers people to take control of their health. When people are educated about breast health, they are more likely to take proactive steps to monitor their breasts for any changes. They are also more likely to seek medical attention if they do notice any changes. By taking an active role in their health, people can potentially detect breast cancer early and give themselves the best chance of recovery. Breast health education is incredibly important to me because of the impact that breast cancer has had on my life. Losing my aunt to this disease was one of the hardest experiences I have ever had to endure. But her experience taught me just how important it is to advocate for people to know about breast health and the steps they can take to prevent and detect breast cancer early. By raising awareness about breast health and the importance of early detection, we can empower people to take control of their health and potentially save countless lives.

Living with a chronic illness has been a challenging journey for me. As someone who has dealt with a chronic condition, my daily life has been impacted severely due to limited time and a sporadic schedule. These uncertainties have created a significant hurdle in my efforts to pursue my dreams, but they have also inspired me to push beyond my limits and excel despite my limitations. One of the key ways that my chronic illness has impacted my life is by limiting the amount of time that I have to pursue my goals. Often, I end up having to cancel appointments or social events due to a flare-up, which can disrupt my schedule. This unpredictability has made it crucial for me to prioritize my goals and to make sure that I’m optimizing my time in every possible way. Despite these challenges, I refuse to let my chronic illness define me. It has given me a new perspective on life, and an appreciation for the small victories I can achieve. For me, success is not measured by huge achievements, but by the daily progress, I make towards my goals, regardless of how small they may seem. In addition to the limited time, the cost of appointments and care has been another significant challenge. As someone who has dealt with medical bills and lost time from work, I understand the financial struggles that many people face. I recognize that for many, accessing medical treatment may be difficult due to the cost of appointments, medication, and other care-related expenses. This is why I am passionate about giving back and helping those who may be struggling to access the care they need. My journey has ignited a fire within me to impact the world and empower others to overcome their limitations. I want to be a voice for those who feel unheard and to inspire others to chase their dreams despite their circumstances. I believe that it is possible to achieve success even when faced with adversity - we just have to believe in ourselves and be willing to take risks. Living with a chronic illness has presented many challenges, including restricted time, and financial struggles, but it has also been a source of strength and motivation. Despite the setbacks, I am committed to pursuing my goals of becoming a nurse educator, and to making a positive impact on the world and nursing. My experience has inspired me to help others who may be in a similar position and to empower them to overcome their limitations and achieve greatness.

As a registered nurse, math plays a critical role in ensuring that patients receive the best possible care. From calculating medication dosages to monitoring vital signs, nurses must possess strong math skills to keep patients safe and healthy. One of the most important areas where math skills come into play is when administering medication. Patient safety is of utmost importance, and delivering the correct dosage of medication to the patient is crucial. A simple miscalculation can have serious consequences and could even be life-threatening. Therefore, nurses need to have a deep understanding of math concepts to perform these tasks accurately. Additionally, nurses need to be able to measure and monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate, among others. All of these measurements are quantifiable and require the use of mathematical formulas to interpret them accurately. Nurses need to be aware of even the slightest changes in these vital signs, as they can indicate the progression or regression of a patient's condition. The ability to analyze and interpret data is another essential aspect that is required for nurses to excel in their profession. Nurses need to analyze patient data to identify patterns and changes that could affect the patient's condition. A good understanding of statistics is important as well since nurses may be required to collect and analyze data in studies or clinical trials. Furthermore, nurses also need strong problem-solving skills, which can be developed through math. Being able to tackle complex math problems will enhance nurses' problem-solving skills, enabling them to help patients efficiently and effectively. Nurses who love learning math are often quick to solve problems and can find solutions to even the most complex patient care scenarios. Personally, I love learning math because it just makes sense. Mathematics is a subject that is both logical and consistent, and this is what makes it very appealing to me. The unique challenges that come with problem-solving using mathematical formulas fuel my passion for the subject. I always seek opportunities to apply math concepts at work, not only to ensure accuracy but also to deepen my knowledge in this field. Being able to apply math in practical situations not only reinforces my understanding of the subject but also helps me improve my clinical skills, leading to better patient outcomes. In conclusion, math is a crucial skill for registered nurses, as it enables them to administer medication safely, monitor vital signs accurately, analyze data, and solve complex problems. Nurses with strong math skills can deliver top-notch care, which ultimately leads to better patient outcomes. As someone who loves learning math, I understand the importance of this subject to my profession, and I continue to explore opportunities to apply my math skills to improve patient care.

Math was one of my favorite subjects growing up; it just made sense to me. I always enjoyed going to math class in school, all the way from kindergarten through high school and college. In my adult life, transitioning to a profession where math is not as prominent was challenging. In my career as a Registered Nurse, math is pushed to the backburner. When you think of nursing, you think of caring and treating sick patients; not math. When thinking of this type of care, you think of providing empathy, emotional and physical support for patients. However, there is more math in nursing than you would think! This is a large part of our “nursing care.” As a pediatric nurse, math is used in a plethora of ways. These include medication calculation with medications such as Ibuprofen and Tylenol and titration of drips such as Insulin and opioids. I love math, ultimately, because I can use it to treat and care for my patients. The “five rights” of medication administration include the right patient, the right drug, the right dose, the right route, and the right time. Any step in the miscalculation of medications can lead to serious complications and even death.

My health journey starts as far back as I can think; to about middle school. I have always been the “overweight” kid. Since middle school, western beauty standards encouraged me to try and lose weight which triggered unhealthy health habits. These standards also pressured others to make discouraging comments and express their “concerns” about my health and nutrition practices. Since then, I have tried every diet and workout routine you could imagine. Diets included weight watchers, calorie counting, and most recently; the keto diet. I have also tried workout routines including P90X, pilates, joining my local YMCA, online videos, etc. However, throughout middle school and high school I was a competitive swimmer which kept my health under control. After high school, I went to a local college to obtain my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. The nursing program I attended was rigorous and my health soon reflected my stress. I was not working out and eating to cope. During my third year in this program, I realized something needed to change. However, I was only focused on dropping pounds; not my overall health and happiness. This led me to trying the keto diet. I lost about 50 pounds on the keto diet, however, I shortly realized that this type of diet that excluded food groups was unsustainable. After I quit the keto diet, I did regain weight. However, this time I was focused on my mental health and healing my relationship with food, exercise, and my body. Once I became a Registered Nurse and was settled in my career, I realized that my health journey was a key part in neutralizing the stressful and often anxiety ridden career as a Registered Nurse. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my husband and I gathered supplies to start a home gym which I have been using ever since. I have determined which exercises I enjoy such as walking with my dogs and using my TRX equipment. I have been listening to my body and working out when it is enjoyable to me, which is three to four times a week. I have also started eating healthy which I have been following the principles of intuitive eating. All of these practices have helped me heal and fuel my body. Putting beauty standards aside and unfollowing those who express unhealthy habits and eating disorders has been another part of my journey. As to the challenges I face in school, I have started putting my health first. This may mean working out or getting sleep before worrying about an assignment. These habits have reshaped my definition of what being healthy is and changed my focus to my overall physical, mental, and emotional health.

These habits have reshaped my definition of what being healthy is and changed my focus to my overall physical, mental, and emotional health.

My best back-to-school tip is to get out of the house! Whether it is studying at Starbucks or taking a walk on your favorite trail. Getting out of the house allows you to clear your brain. Studying at a different location other than your house makes you want to focus on your schoolwork instead of focusing on other distractions such as washing your dishes. Getting out of the house to do other activities such as hand out with friends or take a bike ride is also important to keep your brain and body emotionally and physically healthy. @morganlea26

My favorite scientific discovery is vaccines. Vaccinology was discovered by Edward Jenner in 1796 when he inoculated a child with the vaccinia virus (cowpox) and by 1798 the first smallpox vaccine was developed. I find vaccines fascinating since they have eradicated once-common diseases including smallpox, polio, and tetanus. Though controversial, vaccines continue to prove effective. I enjoy that vaccines are continually evolving to meet society's needs. This includes the first approved mRNA vaccine against the virus that causes COVID-19. As a nurse working in a hospital at the time of the pandemic, I have seen the effect this vaccine has had on our population. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have decreased dramatically since the FDA approval of the COVID-19 vaccination. Symptoms have also been more mild in those infected and vaccinated for COVID-19. As a future Nurse Educator, I want to teach my students why vaccines are so important for our population health and encourage proper education of all vaccinations.

I was inspired to become a nurse from my late aunt, Mary Rosin. My aunt, Mary, was a high school math teacher for over 35 years where she served as the district mathematics coordinator and received several honors from the state including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics, Science Teaching Award winner, and the Kohl Fellowship Award for excellence. I remember Mary being diagnosed with breast cancer when I was in elementary school. However, soon after she was able to be in remission. During this experience, my interest peaked in healthcare. While visiting my aunt in the hospital at this young age, I remember wanting to help people like the nurses who were helping my aunt. During my undergraduate program, my aunt fell sick again; she was again diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and passed away in 2018. I was also inspired to pursue a career in nursing by my experience in athletics. I was a varsity member of my high school swim team for all four years where I eventually became Team Captain my senior year in 2016. During my career, I have suffered shoulder injuries from repetitive movements. During one of these injuries, my doctor was worried about my rotator cuff tearing so I was sent to rigorous physical therapy. While attending physical therapy, I knew that I wanted to continue helping people like my Physical Therapist was. These experiences pushed me to attend Bellin College for my Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2016. In my career, I would like to achieve excellence in nursing such as my Aunt Mary in education. I am advancing my education by becoming a Nurse Educator to help shape the nurses and nursing of the future. I believe that Nurse Educators play a critical role in healthcare by serving as role models for future nurses and providing leadership needed to implement evidence-based nursing practices to improve patient care and outcomes. My hope is to inspire and educate nurses that will have a continuing impact on patients and families in my community. Furthering my education as a Nurse Educator allows me to grow in my expertise of the nursing field and continue to meet my goal of being a life-long learner. I also continue to take continuing education courses and certifications to help me reach this goal. My future career goals and plans include working as a full-time nurse educator in my area as well as continuing to work part time in an inpatient setting.

The values of the college I attend and graduated with by Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Bellin College) include excellence, integrity, community, and caring. This rigorous program and values has made me evolve into a young professional. I will treat all my future students with kindness and respect. I will also honor and care for all my patients and students in the education and inpatient settings with compassion and empathy by listening to their wants and needs, being present, acknowledging their feelings, and opening up about similar experiences.

Furthering my education as a Nurse Educator would encourage me to grow in my expertise of the nursing field and continue to meet my goal of being a life-long learner. Being a life-long learner and pursuing higher education is important to me since in the world of nursing you are learning everyday. It can be as small as what to say to a grieving patient or as large as how to titrate multiple medications. It is important that I continue to teach these practices and shape the future of nursing. These practices and knowledge needs to be passed down to future generations to continue to improve the nursing as well as hospital and patient outcomes. It is also important to me to provide for my family and continue a work-life balance which I will be able to do after pursuing higher education. My future career goals and plans include working as a full-time nurse educator in my area as well as continuing to work part time in an inpatient setting. Becoming a Nurse Educator would allow me to fulfill those goals by keeping myself immersed in the nursing profession and current practices as well as providing a work-life balance. A life-long goal of mine is to extend my knowledge and become an expert in the nursing field. I will achieve this by taking continuing education courses, and achieving a board certification in pediatrics by the end of summer 2022. My Nurse Educator degree and certification would also help me achieve these goals. I will be a successful student in this program as I am organized, empathetic, and put forth my best effort. I am able to stay on task and organized with assignments and goals. I am understanding and flexible with directors and staff during extraordinary circumstances. I will strive to achieve my fullest potential by earning acceptable grades. This will allow me to provide the best services possible to our communities’ future nurses.
