Bio

My name is Molly, and I am pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration while working as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. As an MLS, I perform a variety of laboratory tests on patient samples to help diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases. Playing a crucial role in patient care and treatment decisions is what drew me to this career. I previously graduated with a B.S. in Microbiology at LSU. While there, I researched plant molecular genetics in the area of photosynthesis and the role of homologs in methanogenic archaea. In addition to my academic pursuits and professional endeavors, I volunteer at a free clinic, providing affordable healthcare services to those in need. Moreover, I'm an advocate for reducing medical waste within healthcare settings, striving to contribute positively to our planet's health. Outside of healthcare and environmental advocacy, I've volunteered with my sorority at St. Lillian Academy, the Emerge Center, and Starkey Hearing Foundation, where I've had the privilege of helping children with hearing loss and other exceptionalities. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of giving back to the community and supporting those in need. In my spare time, I love to play the piano, read, and do yoga. The break from reality these activities offer helps with my anxiety and chronic illness. When I have the financial means, I would love to travel, expand my horizons, and experience the cultures of the world. I hope to find purpose in my work that will satisfy me throughout life while also leaving a positive impact on others.

In envisioning a business venture within my local community, I am driven by a dual commitment to address pressing issues: mental health support and environmental sustainability within the healthcare sector. My proposed business aims to revolutionize medical facility practices by offering eco-conscious, mental health-centric solutions. The core focus of my business is twofold. Firstly, it involves providing comprehensive mental health awareness and support programs tailored specifically for healthcare professionals. This includes workshops, counseling services, and resources aimed at fostering a supportive and mentally healthy work environment. Secondly, the business aims to introduce and implement sustainable practices within medical facilities, with a primary emphasis on reducing single-use plastics. The genesis of my passion for mental health advocacy traces back to a personal tragedy that profoundly impacted my life. When I was a child, my vibrant and beloved aunt, whom I shared countless cherished memories with, tragically succumbed to the silent struggle of mental health and took her own life. Her passing left an indelible mark on my journey, revealing the stark contrast between her radiant exterior and the unspoken pain she bore. Witnessing this incongruity ignited a fervent desire within me to destigmatize mental health struggles and foster accessible support systems. My aunt's untold story serves as an enduring reminder of the importance of proactive mental health initiatives, inspiring my dedication to creating a community where no one feels alone in their battles. To enrich the welfare of the community, my business seeks to bridge critical gaps in mental health support within the healthcare sector. Through education, training, and accessible resources, the business endeavors to create a nurturing environment that prioritizes mental well-being for healthcare professionals. This, in turn, has a ripple effect on patient care, fostering a more empathetic and attentive healthcare system. Furthermore, my business is dedicated to environmental stewardship by offering alternative, eco-friendly options to diminish the reliance on single-use plastics in medical settings. By collaborating with suppliers and healthcare institutions, the business aims to introduce and promote the use of sustainable materials and practices. This initiative not only contributes to environmental conservation but also sets a precedent for responsible and sustainable healthcare practices within the community. To kickstart this business, I envision a comprehensive plan involving thorough market research to understand the local healthcare landscape and its needs. Partnering with mental health professionals and environmental experts will be crucial in designing effective programs and sourcing sustainable alternatives. Securing funding through grants, partnerships, or even this scholarship would enable the initial setup, while networking within the healthcare community would facilitate pilot programs and garner support. Overall, my business aligns with my commitment to mental health advocacy, sustainable practices, and improving healthcare systems. By embarking on this venture, I aim to create a positive, lasting impact within my community, revolutionizing healthcare practices while honoring the memory of my aunt and contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Growing up, I was privileged to have an aunt who was more than just a family member; she was a beacon of light in my childhood. She shared laughter, wisdom, and unforgettable moments with me. Little did I know that beneath her infectious smile and warm embrace, she carried the heavy burden of mental health struggles. The impact of her suicide shattered my world and opened my eyes to the critical importance of mental health. This painful experience has fueled my belief in the paramount significance of mental well-being. I witnessed firsthand how unchecked depression and anxiety can lead to unimaginable tragedy. The fact that my beloved aunt, who radiated love and kindness, was silently fighting her inner demons, is a stark reminder of the deceptive nature of mental health struggles. It's a reminder that we all need to prioritize and maintain our mental wellness. Throughout high school and the beginning of college, I confronted my own battles with depression and anxiety. The weight of academic pressures, personal expectations, and the pursuit of a demanding career took a toll on my mental health. The memories of my aunt's struggles were an ever-present reminder, and I knew I needed to address my own well-being. My journey toward healing involved seeking professional help, including therapy and medication, which ultimately allowed me to regain control of my mental health. It is not enough to focus solely on physical health; mental well-being must be given equal attention. I'm committed to working towards implementing comprehensive mental health programs within healthcare organizations, ensuring that individuals have access to the support and resources they need. To maintain my mental wellness, I prioritize self-care routines that include regular exercise, mindfulness, and seeking therapy when necessary. I've come to understand that mental health is an ongoing journey that requires consistent attention and care. By sharing my story, advocating for mental health, and working within the healthcare sector, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others who may be silently struggling, just as my dear aunt did. In conclusion, I believe in the paramount importance of mental health due to the personal experiences I've had, witnessing the impact of my aunt's struggles, and overcoming my own challenges. I maintain my mental wellness through self-care practices, therapy, and an unwavering commitment to advocating for mental health awareness. In a world bustling with diverse perspectives and stories, if I could gift a single book to every individual on this planet, it would undoubtedly be "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel Keyes. This novel has woven its way into my heart, etching profound lessons that have guided my perception of humanity, compassion, and self-discovery. Encountering "Flowers for Algernon" as assigned reading in my AP Psychology class was a serendipitous turn of events. At first glance, it appeared to be a story centered on scientific experimentation, intellect, and the intricate workings of the human mind. However, as I delved deeper into the narrative, I was spellbound by the richness of its themes and the emotional journey it embarked upon. The protagonist, Charlie Gordon, with his poignant transformation from intellectual limitations to genius heights and back, resonated with me on a profound level. Through his experiences, the book unearths the essence of our shared human experience – that our humanity is not tethered to the extent of our intelligence, but rather rooted in our capacity for empathy, kindness, and genuine connection. Charlie's struggle with his fleeting brilliance emphasizes the impermanence of external attributes and the transient nature of accomplishments. This mirrors the real world, where superficial measures of success often cloud the true measures of our worth as individuals. This book, like a guiding light, reminds us that our interactions with others, the love we share, and the compassion we extend define the core of our existence. In a society inundated with the pursuit of knowledge and material success, "Flowers for Algernon" acts as a compass directing us towards what truly matters – the relationships we build, the emotions we share, and the lives we touch. The raw beauty of this book lies in its ability to stir conversations about inclusivity, empathy, and the beauty of embracing our vulnerabilities. Imagine a world where every person has experienced the profound transformation this book offers. A world where the pursuit of knowledge is harmonized with the pursuit of kindness, where intellectual prowess is complemented by emotional depth. "Flowers for Algernon" has the potential to nurture a global shift in perspective, bridging gaps between cultures, ideologies, and beliefs by emphasizing the universal values that bind us as humans.

These skills seamlessly translated into my professional life, where I frequently collaborate with doctors, nurses, and fellow scientists to ensure accurate and timely results. But why am I a leader? The answer lies in necessity. In the laboratory, there's no room for hesitation. When results need to be delivered promptly and lives are on the line, leadership isn't just an option; it's a requirement. I've often found myself taking the initiative to coordinate with the team, troubleshoot unexpected challenges, and guide newer members during intense moments. My upbringing as the middle child, with responsibilities that extended beyond my years, taught me resilience. It taught me to stay calm under pressure, to adapt to rapidly changing situations, and to instill a sense of unity even in the face of chaos. These lessons have been indispensable in my role as a medical laboratory scientist, where split-second decisions can impact patient outcomes. Ultimately, leadership for me isn't about commanding from the front, but about understanding the strengths of each team member and bringing those strengths together for a common purpose. It's about recognizing that every voice and every perspective matters. Just as I bridged the gap between my older and younger siblings, I bridge the gap between various healthcare professionals, ensuring that the diagnosis process flows seamlessly for the benefit of the patient. As I embark on the journey of higher education, I carry with me the lessons of my upbringing and the experiences that have shaped me into the leader I am today. With an unwavering commitment to collaboration, a penchant for effective communication, and a track record of stepping up when needed most, I am prepared to continue making a difference in the world of medical diagnostics – not just because I want to, but because I need to.

    Healthy Eating Scholarship
When I was a freshman in college, I didn't believe in "the freshman fifteen." After a semester of surviving off hot cheetos and soda, I was proven wrong. That didn't stop me from indulging, though. It wasn't until I witnessed my father's health journey after he suffered a heart attack that I began to firmly believe in the importance of cultivating healthy eating habits. As a 23-year-old woman who has graduated in medical laboratory science, I have seen firsthand the profound impact that nutrition can have on our physical and mental well-being. However, the financial barrier associated with the price of fresh and healthy food often deters individuals, particularly college students, from adopting better eating practices. I begin my master's program in healthcare administration in the fall, and saving up for tuition has absolutely affected my purchases at the grocery store. That is why I find the Healthy Eating scholarship offered by Top Nutrition Coaching incredibly valuable, as it aims to address this very challenge. Healthy eating habits are essential because they serve as the foundation for overall well-being. Our bodies require a balance of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to function optimally. By nourishing ourselves with wholesome foods, we provide our bodies with the necessary fuel to support physical vitality and strength. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins offers numerous benefits, such as improved energy levels, enhanced immune function, and better weight management. Additionally, it can reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. The food we consume plays a significant role in determining our long-term health outcomes, and adopting healthy eating habits is an investment in our future well-being. In just a year since his heart attack, my father has been able to improve his heart health dramatically with diet and exercise. Getting to see that process firsthand truly solidified my determination to be healthy. Furthermore, the impact of healthy eating extends beyond physical health; it profoundly influences our mental and emotional well-being. Proper nutrition supports cognitive function, memory retention, and concentration, allowing us to perform better academically and professionally. When I prioritize healthy eating, I notice a remarkable difference in my mental clarity and focus. I feel more alert, productive, and capable of handling the demands of my studies and personal commitments. On the other hand, when I neglect my nutrition and indulge in unhealthy food choices, I experience a decline in energy levels, increased brain fog, and a general sense of sluggishness. These observations highlight the direct correlation between healthy eating habits and mental well-being. Unfortunately, the cost of fresh, healthy food can pose a significant challenge for individuals, particularly college students who are often on a tight budget. This financial constraint often leads to compromising on food choices, opting for inexpensive, calorie-dense options that are low in nutritional value. The Healthy Eating scholarship offered by Top Nutrition Coaching addresses this issue by providing financial support to students, enabling them to afford wholesome foods, ingredients, or meal plans that encourage healthier eating. This initiative can alleviate the financial burden and empower students to make choices that positively impact their health, both in the short and long term.

    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Growing up, my family has been plagued with mental health issues that have deeply impacted our lives. With so many members of my family affected by mental illness, sometimes I joke that our family reunions are like a psychology convention. We've got everything from post-partum depression to panic attacks to alcoholism - you name it, we've got it covered. While it may seem like a lot to handle, I've learned that it's important to approach these challenges with a sense of humor and a spirit of resilience. After all, laughter really can be the best medicine! While my experiences with mental health have taught me many valuable lessons, they have also made me acutely aware of the unfairness and stigma that often accompanies mental illness. It can be frustrating to see the ways in which mental health struggles are often misunderstood or dismissed, especially when they are experienced by people who are close to us. It's difficult to watch our loved ones suffer and to feel helpless in the face of their pain. However, it is important to remember that mental illness is not a personal failing or a weakness, but a complex and often multifaceted condition that can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. By working together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote access to care, we can help to create a more compassionate and supportive society for those who are struggling with mental health issues. Living with mental health issues can be challenging, but it has also taught me a great deal about resilience, empathy, and the importance of seeking help when needed. Seeing my family members struggle with their mental health has motivated me to pursue a career in medical laboratory science, where I hope to contribute to the development of new treatments and therapies for mental illness. One way that I hope to make an impact is by focusing on the role of genetics in mental illness. By studying the genetic factors that contribute to mental health disorders, I hope to uncover new insights into the underlying biological mechanisms that drive these conditions. This knowledge can then be used to develop more effective and personalized treatments that target specific genetic mutations or biochemical pathways that contribute to mental illness. In addition to conducting research, I hope to use my career to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that often surrounds mental illness. By educating the public about the causes, symptoms, and treatments of mental health disorders, I believe that we can help to break down the barriers that prevent many people from seeking help when they need it most. I also hope to work closely with mental health professionals to develop innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to treating mental illness, such as combining medication with behavioral therapies or using emerging technologies like brain stimulation to enhance treatment outcomes. As a person of faith, I have always been taught that God is in control of everything and that we should trust in His plan, even when things are difficult. However, seeing my family members suffer from mental illness has challenged this belief. It's hard to reconcile the idea of a loving and all-powerful God with the reality of mental illness, which can cause immense pain and suffering. At the same time, I have also seen how faith and spirituality can provide comfort and support to those who are struggling with mental health challenges. Ultimately, I believe that mental illness requires a nuanced and compassionate approach, one that takes into account the biological, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of human experience. While I may not have all the answers, I am committed to exploring these questions and seeking a deeper understanding of the intersections between mental health and spirituality. Ultimately, my experiences with mental health have taught me that no one should have to suffer alone. Whether it's seeking help for yourself or supporting someone else through their struggles, there is always hope for recovery and healing. I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and healthcare professionals who have helped me on my journey, and I am committed to making a difference in the lives of others who may be struggling with mental illness.

It was a warm summer day when I first heard about my cousin's struggles with opioid addiction. I remember thinking news like that could never come on such a normal day. It wasn't something that I had ever expected to hear from my family. He was always the life of the party, the one who made everyone laugh and smile, but underneath his cheerful exterior, he was hiding a terrible secret. As his addiction spiraled out of control, it indirectly affected my life in many ways. I was just a child at the time, but I saw how it impacted my family and friends. The once-happy gatherings turned into somber occasions filled with tension and anxiety. We were all worried about my cousin's health and safety, and it seemed like there was nothing we could do to help. It was during this time that I turned to my faith in God. I prayed every day for my cousin's recovery and for the strength to support my family through this difficult time. As the months went by, it became harder and harder to keep the faith. I wondered how God could let this happen to someone so young and full of life. I felt angry and frustrated, and my beliefs were tested in ways I never thought possible. But even in the darkest moments, I found hope. I saw how my family rallied around my cousin, and how they never gave up on him. I saw how people from our community came together to support each other, and how they showed us that there was always a light at the end of the tunnel. We told jokes and shared stories, and we reminded each other that no matter what happened, we were in this together. In the end, my cousin overcame his addiction, and he is now a shining example of hope and resilience. He has a beautiful son and lives a happy life. He showed me that even in the darkest of times, there is always a way forward. I am grateful for the lessons that I learned, the relationships that were strengthened, and the path that was set before me. Because of those experiences, I know that I can make a difference and that I can help others find their way back to health, hope, and happiness.

Haywood Reed Jr. Well Being Scholarship
Growing up in Louisiana, I've noticed that mental health is a subject that is often shrouded in taboo. I hope to be a part of the generation that changes the conversation around mental health, and to start with, I am prioritizing my own mental wellbeing. The healthy habit I plan on adopting is mindfulness meditation. I am a big yogi, but I find I'm more focused on the task at hand then my own thoughts, so I hope this experience will help me connect with myself better. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment and acknowledging any thoughts or feelings that may arise without judgment. By practicing this technique regularly, I hope to develop a greater awareness of my thoughts and emotions and learn to manage them in a healthier way. This will not only help me manage stress and anxiety but also help me to be more productive and focused in my studies. It is important for me to remember that mental and emotional health are just as important as physical health and should be treated with the same level of care and attention. Mental health is an issue that is very close to my heart. I have personally struggled with anxiety and depression, reaching an incredibly low point at the beginning of my college career. I want to prevent others from ever having to feel the way I felt during that time. Mental health is important to me not just because of my own struggles but also because I lost my aunt to suicide. She is the star of my childhood, and to think she was struggling during that entire period of my life breaks my heart. Althought I was a child, I'll always wish I could have helped her. Her death has made me realize the importance of having a safe space to talk about mental health, and I am determined to create such a space for my friends and other students. Creating a safe space for mental health discussions involves more than just providing a physical space where people can gather and talk. It involves creating an environment where people feel comfortable sharing their struggles, without fear of judgment or rejection. To create such a space, I plan to be open about my own struggles with mental health and encourage others to do the same. By sharing my experiences, I hope to create a sense of empathy and understanding that will help others feel comfortable opening up about their own struggles. Another important aspect of creating a safe space for mental health discussions is ensuring that everyone feels heard and respected. This involves actively listening to others, without judgment or interruption, and valuing their experiences and perspectives. By doing so, we can create a sense of community and support that can help people feel less alone and more empowered to manage their mental health. I am determined to create a safe space for my friends and other students to talk about their struggles. By being open about my own experiences, listening actively, and promoting mental health and wellness, I hope to create a supportive community that can help people manage their mental health and live fulfilling lives.
    Paige's Promise Scholarship

I also plan to use my education to help people recover from SUD. As a medical laboratory scientist, I can play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of SUD. For example, I could work with healthcare providers to develop treatment plans that are tailored to each individual's needs. I could also help develop new diagnostic tools and treatments that are more effective in treating SUD. In addition, I plan to work with community organizations and advocacy groups in my state to promote awareness and education about SUD. Louisiana is no stranger to the devastating effects of substance use disorders. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, Louisiana has one of the highest rates of illicit drug use in the country. The state has also been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, with high rates of opioid-related overdose deaths. One way I plan to help is by developing educational materials specific to Louisiana's history of substance abuse. By understanding the state's cultural and historical context, we can better understand the root causes of substance abuse and develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies. For example, I could create educational materials that highlight how Louisiana's party culture contributes to substance abuse and addiction. I could also work with local organizations to develop culturally sensitive treatment programs that take into account the unique needs and challenges of Louisiana residents. Overall, my goal is to make a positive impact on my Louisiana community and the world by educating others about SUD and helping people recover from this condition. I believe that education is the key to reducing the stigma surrounding SUD and increasing awareness of the resources available for recovery. Through my career in medical laboratory science, I hope to make a significant contribution to this important cause.

In my studies, I have learned about the critical role that medical laboratory science plays in diagnosing and treating diseases. I understand the importance of accurate and timely diagnosis, and I recognize that access to quality medical care is essential for good health outcomes. Unfortunately, too many people in our communities lack access to the medical care they need. This can be due to a variety of factors, including poverty, systemic discrimination, and lack of healthcare infrastructure. My community in Louisiana particularly struggles with these issues, so to help address them, I have been working to increase access to medical care. I have volunteered at local clinics and hospitals, providing medical services to those who may not have access to them otherwise. I have also worked with community leaders and policymakers to advocate for policies that promote healthcare equity and increase access to medical care. In addition to my work on the ground, I have been involved in research to develop new diagnostic tests and treatments that can improve health outcomes. I believe that innovation and scientific advancement are critical in addressing important social issues, and I am committed to contributing to this work. Soccer has been a constant presence in my life since I was a little girl. As a young child, I loved the feeling of running around and kicking a ball with my friends, but it wasn't until I started playing on an organized team that I truly fell in love with the sport. Over the years, soccer has had a profound impact on my life, shaping who I am as a person and helping me to develop important skills and values. It has given me a sense of community and belonging and has taught me important lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and resilience. One of the most significant ways soccer has impacted my life is by providing me with a sense of purpose and direction. Growing up, I often struggled with anxiety and self-doubt, but when I was on the field, all of those worries faded away. Playing soccer allowed me to focus on the moment and forget about everything else. It gave me a sense of control and empowerment and helped me to feel more confident and capable. Soccer has also taught me important lessons about teamwork and collaboration. Playing on a team requires a great deal of communication, coordination, and trust. It has taught me how to work with others towards a common goal, even when we have different strengths and weaknesses. It has also taught me the importance of supporting one another and celebrating each other's successes. Another way soccer has positively impacted my life is by helping me to develop resilience and perseverance. Playing soccer requires a lot of hard work and dedication, and there are times when it can be frustrating or discouraging. But through all the challenges and setbacks, I have learned to push through and keep working towards my goals. I have learned that failure is just a stepping stone on the path to success and that the most important thing is to keep moving forward. Finally, soccer has given me a sense of community and belonging. Playing on a team has allowed me to connect with others who share my passion for the sport, and has given me a group of friends and supporters who I can rely on. Whether we win or lose, we know that we are in it together and that we have each other's backs. In many ways, soccer has been a constant source of joy and positivity in my life. It has helped me to grow and develop as a person and has given me a sense of purpose and belonging. I am grateful for all of the opportunities and experiences that soccer has brought into my life, and I know that it will continue to be a part of who I am for years to come.

As a woman living in today's world, I am acutely aware of the impact that my daily choices have on the environment. From the products I use in my home to the food I eat and the way I commute, I know that each decision I make can have a lasting effect on the planet. For me, living sustainably is not just a passing trend or a buzzword; it's a way of life. I make a conscious effort each day to reduce my carbon footprint and minimize my impact on the environment. This means making choices that prioritize the planet over convenience or short-term gain. One of the most significant ways I strive to live sustainably is by reducing my use of single-use plastics. I bring my own reusable bags to the grocery store, use refillable water bottles, and choose products with minimal or recyclable packaging. I also try to buy products made from sustainable materials, like bamboo or recycled plastic, and avoid those that contribute to deforestation or other destructive practices. I am also mindful of the food I eat and the impact it has on the planet. I try to eat a plant-based diet as much as possible, which has been shown to have a much lower environmental impact than meat and dairy products. When I do consume animal products, I choose ones that are sustainably sourced and free from hormones and antibiotics. I also try to buy local and seasonal produce, which reduces the carbon footprint of transporting food long distances. Another way I live sustainably is by using public transportation or walking whenever possible. I am lucky to live in a city with good public transit options, and I take advantage of them to reduce my use of cars and decrease my carbon emissions. When I do drive, I try to carpool with others or choose a fuel-efficient vehicle. Living sustainably is not always easy, and there are times when I slip up or make less-than-ideal choices. But I believe that every small change counts, and by making conscious decisions each day, I can help reduce my impact on the planet and contribute to a more sustainable future. Ultimately, living sustainably is about balancing our needs with the needs of the planet. It's about recognizing the interconnectedness of all living things and understanding that the choices we make each day can have a profound impact on the world around us. By driving to live sustainably each day, I hope to do my part in creating a more sustainable and just world for all.

Love is like a mosquito, buzzing in my ear, A tiny little creature that I can barely hear. It comes and goes, just like the summer breeze, A little nuisance that makes me itch and wheeze. Love can be persistent, just like a mosquito bite, It lingers on and on, even in the dead of night. It can make me feel alive, or leave me feeling numb, A tiny little creature, that can't be outdone. Love can be a pest, just like a mosquito's whine, It can invade my thoughts, and never leave my mind. It can be sweet and gentle, or leave me feeling sore, A little annoyance, that I can't ignore. But just like a mosquito, love can be beautiful too, It can lift me up, and make my heart feel brand new. It can be a little flutter, that makes my heart sing, A tiny little creature, that can make my heart take wing. So even though love may be a little pest, It's worth it all, for the times that are the best. For just like a mosquito, love can bring a little joy, A tiny little creature, that can be my shining buoy.

I tried my hand at writing a poem, But my words came out all wrong 'em. I tried to rhyme, but it didn't work, My lines were bad, they made me smirk. I sat and thought for quite a while, Wondering if I could make someone smile. I searched for inspiration, but found none, I was stuck, just like a tree in the sun. But then I thought, why not have fun? Why not just let my words run? I threw caution to the wind, And soon my creativity did begin. I wrote of silly things and thoughts, Of all the things that made me guffaw and snort. I wrote of elephants who learned to fly, And of a frog who could sing so high. I wrote of love, and I wrote of hate, Of all the things that make us great. I wrote of life, and I wrote of death, And soon my words were just a breath. So now my poem is done and through, And I hope it made you laugh too. For even though my rhymes were off, I hope you found my words not scoffed.

The book "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera has had a profound impact on my life. Set in a world where people are assigned an "end day," two boys both look for a friend on their final day. This story of two young men who find out they have just 24 hours left to live has completely transformed the way I view my own life and the world around me. When I first picked up this book, I was expecting a tragic and heartbreaking story. I mean, the title does not beat around the bush: They both do, in fact, die in the end. And while it certainly was tragic, it was also so much more. Through the characters of Mateo and Rufus, I was reminded of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living in the present moment. The message of the book resonated with me deeply, and I found myself thinking about it constantly long after I had finished reading. I began to question the choices I was making in my own life and the impact they were having on my overall happiness and fulfillment. I realized that I had been living my life on autopilot, going through the motions without really considering what was truly important to me. This realization led to a profound transformation in my life. I began to prioritize my passions and my relationships with the people I care about most. I started saying yes to experiences and opportunities that scared me, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and living life to the fullest. In addition to changing the way I live my own life, "They Both Die at the End" has also inspired me to make a difference in the lives of others. The book reminded me of the importance of empathy and kindness, and I have made a conscious effort to be more present and understanding with the people around me. Overall, "They Both Die at the End" has had an incredible impact on my life. It has inspired me to live my life with purpose and passion, to prioritize the things that truly matter to me, and to make a difference in the lives of those around me. I am grateful for this book and the way it has transformed my perspective on life, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a powerful and moving story that will stay with them long after they finish reading.

In May 2021, my dad had a heart attack where his left anterior descending artery was completely blocked. Doctors nicknamed this class of heart attack the "widow-maker." My father's cardiologist told us only 12% of patients survive, and I am lucky to say my dad is part of that 12%. The doctors explained how they threaded a balloon catheter through his body to place three stents. These stents saved his life by keeping his narrowed arteries open. At that moment, I wanted to give the person who invented the stent a big ole kiss. Lucky for me, he is still around. Julio Palmaz created the modern balloon-expandable stent after playing around with a discarded piece of metal on his garage floor. From such a small act came a revolutionary cardiac care device. Plaque can build up in the arteries, causing them to narrow and reducing the flow of blood to the heart. Stents are compact tubes placed in an artery to keep them open. They are permanent metal or plastic-like devices that treat coronary diseases like heart attacks. Over a million people undergo coronary artery stenting annually. Palmaz's invention has saved countless lives, and I'll always be thankful that one of those lives happened to be my father. That is why my favorite scientific discovery is the coronary stent.
    Bold Independence Scholarship
When I was younger, adults commented about my independence to my mother. Although I did not understand big words like independent yet, the praise from those I looked up to felt good. Little me wanted to keep their attention, so I kept doing whatever actions labeled me as "independent." This began a positive feedback loop, leading me to associate independence with admiration. People who control their own lives and do not rely on others are held in high esteem. Since the general population seems to prefer independent people, I felt to be likable, I needed to fend for myself, form my own opinions, and not depend on others to fix my problems. As a child, the most independence I needed was to tie my shoes or pick an outfit. As an adult, the standards of independence increased drastically. I needed to find a job, make a living, feed myself, etc. That is a big change from putting on velcro tennis shoes. The pressure of independence caught up with me at college. The shock of being on my own made me realize how ill-prepared I was for adult life. Since I had viewed independence as a necessary trait for social acceptance my entire life, my insecurities had me worried I was not cut for adulthood. After shrinking my delicates, I finally ditched my independent streak and called my mom. Having to admit defeat felt awful. I thought she was going to call me stupid, but instead, she said that needing help every once in a while is normal. To me, independence means having enough control over your life to know when you do not have control. Living independently frees you from others, but it does not mean you should shun them entirely. Even the most self-supporting individuals need a little TLC.
    Hobbies Matter
When I was a child, my mother encouraged me to find a hobby, mainly so she could drop me off somewhere for an hour and get a break. I tried most sports you can think of: soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, and even ultimate frisbee. Nothing ever stuck for long. While driving around my neighborhood after soccer practice, my mom spotted a yard sign advertising piano lessons. She could tell I was getting bored with soccer, so she started hyping up piano, hoping to pique my interest; It worked. The following Monday, I headed down the street to my neighbor's house. I walked up to her driveway, making sure to mind the grass, and saw a woman looking at me through the glass of her front door. I looked back at my mom in her minivan, waiting for me to get inside safely, and she gave me a thumbs up. When I turned around, Mrs. Guiselle already opened the door, motioning for me to come inside. She greeted me in a heavy Russian accent while looking down at me with a cheerful smile. Her house looked like it came straight out of a Good Homes magazine. In the living room hung colorful linen curtains adorned with beads, and rich patterns covered the upholstered furniture, full of color, comfort, and warmth. A lace table runner laid on top of the dining table, set as if ready for a grand dinner. Before I could snoop more, she pushed me along into the practice room. Once inside, my breath caught in my throat. In front of me was the most beautiful instrument I had seen in my life. A black upright Yamaha piano stared back at me, glinting in the light of the setting sun. I sat down on the bench and ran my hands over the keys. Before we began, Mrs. Guiselle showed me all the parts of the piano, including the inner frame. I loved watching the strings bounce and vibrate, reacting to each keystroke. Mrs. Guiselle just sat and watched as I explored. When I came out of my trance, I looked at her expectantly, hoping we would jump right into playing. When she saw the glint of excitement in my eye, she just looked at me and said, "Don't worry, we are only getting started." I have been playing the piano for 13 years. The escape from reality playing music provides helps drain me of the anxiety and troubles of the day. Although I love the beauty of pieces from other composers, my true joy lies in creating my own masterpieces. I am no Mozart, but trying to find combinations of keys that create exquisite sounds is exhilarating. Finishing a piece knowing I created it leaves me feeling satisfied and proud. Piano helps me maintain my mental health by providing me with uplifting emotions. I will forever be grateful to my mom for encouraging me to find my passion, even if she just needed a break.

While working on my bachelor's in microbiology, I researched plant and archaeal genetics. My lab edited genes involved in photosynthesis in algae and homologs in methanogenic archaea to understand their purpose. Thousands of hours and dollars were dedicated to this research, and I always wished there was a better system for gene-editing. At the time, CRISPR was relatively new and not widely available, but now it has gone on to win a Nobel prize. My favorite scientific discovery is the CRISPR-Cas9 system, a gene-editing tool discovered by Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna in 2013. Although various methods of gene-editing exist, none come close to the ease, speed, and low cost of CRISPR. These two researchers created CRISPR after studying bacterial immune systems. The microorganisms have the ability to snip parts of intruders’ DNA and store them as segments called CRISPRs. If the invader attacks again, those DNA segments help an enzyme named Cas find and cut the foreigners' DNA. In the same manner, the CRISPR tool uses a guide RNA that mirrors the target DNA and leads the DNA-cutting enzyme Cas9 to the target. Currently, CRISPR is widely used in cell and animal studies, but the tool is becoming a mainstream methodology for disease studies in humans. Diseases such as cancer and cystic fibrosis result from changes in DNA, so the ability to manipulate damaged DNA could cure the disease. For example, researchers used CRISPR to edit immune cells to better hunt down and attack cancerous cells. Despite the excitement surrounding CRISPR, ethical concerns stand in the way of progress. Since CRISPR can edit genes in germline cells, some worry about misuse of the technology to enhance traits in vitro. Hopefully, bioethicists will encourage the use of CRISPR in gene therapy. This technology truly may be the future of medicine.

Although this may sound counterproductive, the most important financial lesson I learned is to treat yourself. Saving money is an important skill, but constantly limiting yourself causes more harm than good. When I started college, I told myself eating out was a waste of money, so I would only cook from home. I tried making my favorite dishes from restaurants, but everything I cooked never came close to the works of a professional chef. After six months of eating failed copycats, I dreaded mealtime. Don't get me wrong, I love to eat, but craving a specific meal and not being able to have it puts a damper on whatever you consume. I resented my education for costing so much, and I hated watching my friends go on social outings to restaurants without me. Finally, I broke down and spent over $100 on takeout from my favorite Chinese place. As I sat there eating lo mein, all I could feel was guilt over my frivolous behavior. This meal I so looked forward to brought me sadness instead of joy. I realized then that treating myself in moderation would have avoided this expensive outburst. Allowing yourself treats in return for good financial behavior can be incredibly motivating. Strictly following a budget without room for self-indulgence leads to feeling depleted and resentful of the positive habitats one tries to form. I found after a week of saving money through conservative choices, allowing myself a treat energized me and left me feeling content with my money-saving skills. Budgeting should not be a punishment, after all. Instead, view it as a means to achieving a goal. Resenting the process of saving money helps no one, so see that movie, or buy that sweater. Everyone deserves a bit of fun and luxury.

There comes a day in every kid's life when they learn their parents are not immortal. Although they seem like superheroes, they are human, just like us. In May 2021, my dad had a heart attack where his left anterior descending artery was completely blocked. Doctors nicknamed this class of heart attack the "widow-maker." My father's cardiologist told us only 12% of patients survive, and I am incredibly lucky to say my dad is part of that 12%. Although he is still here to help guide me through life and support me, the realization that he would not be around forever hit me like a truck. In the future, I will not have him to lean back on, so I must learn now how to be independent. Although nothing is wrong with needing help once in a while, there is a difference between assistance and helplessness. Self-reliance is easier said than done. You have to learn to trust your thoughts, embrace yourself, and be self-motivated. For as long as I have been alive, I trusted others' decisions more than my own due to their perceived superiority. When I needed help with taxes, my dad had the answer. When my tire exploded on the interstate, my dad knew exactly what to do. When I had to decide on a career path, my dad's advice guided my way. I relied on him for everything, but when he was in the hospital, I had to step up, find answers, and solve problems. My family needed me to help fill his spot. If I did not make the decisions, no one did. This experience showed me that I cannot go through life relying on others. I have to step up and find my inner confidence. With my dad in mind, I aided my family through the toughest time in our lives. I learned to trust my gut and not let others tread on me. Even when my dad got the all-clear, he continued to need our support as he transitioned back into everyday life. I will never forget his face when he said he did not know how he would have gotten through this ordeal without me. As I near the end of my student career, there will be a LOT of decisions to make. My dad has set me up for a successful life. I will follow in his lead and continue learning to be my own woman. I am thankful to still have him, but I'm even more thankful for his gift of self-assurance. Although this lesson was learned in a harsh manner, I now know how to better navigate life with my newfound confidence.

I stumbled upon some of the wisest words I've ever heard on TikTok, of all places. The video started with Jim Carrey on a stage wearing a cap and gown. I'll watch anything with Jim Carrey, but where I was expecting laughs, I instead found enlightenment. He proceeded with his commencement speech at a university's graduation. Like most things involving Jim Carrey, I waited for the punchline to drop, but instead, I heard this: “My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive. I learned many great lessons from my father. Not the least of which was that: You can fail at what you don't want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.” Never had I considered failing at the "safe" option. It was the safe option, after all. Nothing in life is guaranteed, so go for what you want, not what you think you need. This revelation lead me to my current life motto: do not say no to yourself before others can.

A good amount of people in my hometown of Destrehan work in the oil industry, so I grew up hearing about gas prices and looking at the flame from the fire stack. Over the years, I began to encounter a problem: jobs like engineering and managing a factory did not appeal to me. My friends were ready to follow in their family’s footsteps, so I thought I should look into that ideology. When your mother is a science teacher and your sister is in school for occupational therapy, you start to notice that science might be calling your name. Growing up, my mom had a bit of bias towards my science classes, so I made sure to do my best, but I never thought about anything coming from it. In second grade, my grammar school, St. Charles Borromeo, held an award show on the last day of the year. For each grade, one student received a prize for having the highest average in a subject. Before the principal announced the winners, I zoned out thinking about the new Hannah Montana episode premiering that night until my name rudely interrupted my daydream. After a few frantically whispered questions to friends, I gathered that I won the science award. The idea that I could excel at something blew my seven-year-old mind. From that point forward, I made science my priority. From igneous rocks to centripetal force, I made it my goal to learn everything my science classes had to offer. My interest in my class topics allowed me to understand the information easily, but I did not find my true passion until I encountered biology my freshman year at Mount Carmel Academy. The class challenged me in a way I had yet to experience. Learning about the systems of the body and how they worked together to create life amazed me. I knew then that a career in medicine had chosen me. After some late-night Wikipedia sessions, I discovered all that medicine offers and how medical school is not the only path you can take. When I was applying to LSU back in 2018, there was a little box on the form that you could check to become eligible for student work. On a whim, I clicked yes and found myself working as an undergraduate research assistant in a biology lab studying photosynthesis in algae. From staining cells for microscopy to purifying proteins for functional analysis, our laboratory studied how plants and algae acquire CO2 for photosynthesis. Along with aiding the graduate students with their research, my job included making growth media and large-scale plasmid and bacteria prep for one of the introductory laboratory classes. Overall, the detective work behind experiments and the rewarding feeling of discovery was addicting. This epiphany led me to research careers involved in lab work, and I landed on Clinical Laboratory Science after seeing how I could provide clues that lead to the diagnosis and treatment of patients. My time as a research assistant as well as my Microbiology degree-related coursework allowed me to foster a love for and refine my skills toward this career field. My prior experience with laboratory protocol and the use of laboratory equipment furthers my anticipation to begin this program. The idea of learning about pathology, analyzing biological specimens, and using sophisticated equipment like spectrometers, autoclaves, and microscopes in pursuit of the diagnosis and treatment of patients feels fulfilling. I hope the Accusoft Corporation will help me foster this feeling throughout my life.
