During the summer of 2023, I pursued an internship opportunity at WaySound in Fox River Grove. Despite the absence of financial compensation, academic credit, or a guarantee of future employment, I embraced the experience as an opportunity to validate my passion for audio recording. Collaborating with the studio's proprietor provided invaluable insights beyond the scope of traditional academic instruction. Engaging with professional clientele illuminated the distinction between educational contexts and real-world industry expectations, emphasizing the importance of respect and professionalism in professional settings. I recently completed my associate in fine arts-Music Production from Elgin Community College, maintaining a GPA of 3.4. As a result of these accomplishments, I am resolute in my ambition to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Audio Arts from Columbia College Chicago. Subsequently, I aspire to pursue a master’s degree in Sound Arts and Industries at Northwestern University. My long-term career objectives encompass assuming a leadership role as an Audio Engineer and establishing my studio. Additionally, I aim to collaborate with artists and attain numerous professional milestones. I also aspire to pursue a career as a recording arts professor, ideally within the academic environment of Elgin Community College. I firmly believe that self-assurance catalyzes realizing one's complete potential. Through unwavering confidence in my abilities, I have indeed achieved the goals I have set for myself thus far.

WCEJ Thornton Foundation Music & Art Scholarship
Songwriting involves connecting suitable pieces that fit together to form a cohesive whole. It is akin to solving a complex puzzle, where lyrical play transforms into a game of crosswords. While my major primarily focuses on recording arts, a comprehensive knowledge of music is fundamental to becoming a proficient audio engineer. My ambition is to emulate the impact of Quincy Jones by elevating artists to new heights and pushing the boundaries of music beyond current limitations. Recording arts is just as indispensable as music itself, for it is through the work of engineers that music can traverse the globe. For instance, the advent of the radio was instrumental in laying the foundation for the emergence of rock and roll music.
Although my educational pursuit centers on recording arts, I have a deep passion for songwriting. Assisting musicians in bringing their compositions to life and refining their music through wordplay, critical modifications, and innovative melodic structures underscores the profound impact a recording engineer can make. As a first-generation college student with a Mexican background, receiving this scholarship would relieve the financial burden of college debt and allow me to concentrate on my chosen field of study. With access to higher education, my skills will reach new heights, potentially making me the first Mexican individual in the United States to achieve success in the music industry. This can inspire others to pursue similar aspirations and strive for excellence. Recognizing the significant impact of higher education, I am committed to contributing a portion of my future earnings to support prospective students in realizing their educational ambitions.
James B. McCleary Music Scholarship
Music's profound impact on my life has been instrumental in shaping my aspirations and defining my journey. Growing up in a household where my father, despite his disability, displayed unwavering dedication to music as a guitarist, I was deeply immersed in melodies and rhythms from an early age. His passion for music fueled my interest, leading me to explore avenues such as songwriting, rapping, and creating alternative music, all resonating deeply with the human spirit.
I found refuge and purpose in music while navigating the complexities of life as an only child with separated parents. It transcended being just a hobby, becoming an essential escape and calling for me. Notwithstanding the financial challenges stemming from my father's disability and our limited income, my determination to pursue my dreams remained unwavering. I worked diligently to establish my bedroom recording studio and refine my skills as a recording engineer, collaborating with various musicians and artists.
My educational journey commenced at Elgin Community College, where I acquired music production and acceptable arts credentials. These experiences significantly fortified my technical competencies and deepened my understanding of the transformative power of music. As I prepare to transfer to Columbia College Chicago to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Audio Arts, receiving this scholarship would alleviate the financial strain on my family and allow me to focus wholeheartedly on my academic pursuits and artistic development.
Music has not solely been a catalyst for change in my life; it has been the defining force. It has instilled in me resilience, creativity, and the ability to form deep connections with others through lyrics and melodies. Each song I create and every beat I produce serves as a poignant reminder of music's profound influence in shaping my present self and aspirations for the future. This scholarship represents not only financial support but also a testament to my belief in my potential and an affirmation of my unwavering dedication to a career in audio production.
I am steadfast in my commitment to leverage this opportunity to excel academically and bring meaningful contributions to the music industry. I aim to continue creating music that resonates deeply, pushing boundaries in sound engineering, and inspiring others through my journey. With gratitude and determination, I eagerly anticipate making a lasting impact in the realm of music, armed with the support of this scholarship and the relentless passion instilled in me by my father and my own life experiences.
Everett J. Collins, Jr. Music Scholarship
Passion, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is a solid and overpowering feeling or emotion. The influence of passion makes it easier to aspire to greatness. This is how I perceive my relationship with music. Music has always provided an escape from my reality, serving as a coping mechanism during challenging times such as my parents' separation and my father's surgery. It has become an integral part of who I am. I felt an exhilarating rush when I discovered that Elgin Community College offered a music production program.
Before finding this program, I felt lost and directionless. Nothing truly resonated with me, and I was on the verge of dropping out of college. However, after enrolling in music classes, my GPA improved from 2.0 to 3.4 within two semesters. I excelled in every music course and discovered a natural talent for songwriting. Although initially drawn to songwriting, I pursued guitar and piano classes. These experiences helped me comprehend music more deeply and allowed me to master these instruments quickly. Additional music theory and recording courses further ignited my passion for music. It was in these moments that I truly felt alive.
I successfully obtained my music production certificate in May of 2022. I recently completed my studies at Elgin Community College to graduate in May of 2024 with an associate in arts and a fine arts degree in Music Production. Starting in the fall of 2024, I am excited to embark on a new journey at Columbia College Chicago, where I will pursue a bachelor's degree in Audio Arts. My ultimate goal is to graduate from Columbia in May of 2026 and begin my career as a recording engineer. At Columbia, I am determined to maximize my learning by pushing my limits and utilizing all available resources. As a versatile musician, I draw inspiration from various genres, including hip-hop and Alternative Rock. I greatly admire musical influencers such as John Lennon, renowned for his songwriting with the Beatles, and Quincy Jones, the exceptionally talented music producer who played a crucial role in bringing Michael Jackson's music to millions of listeners.
Upon graduating from Columbia College Chicago, I aim to take a break from formal education and immerse myself in the world of recording studios. I aim to guide aspiring musicians in reaching their full potential, much like Quincy Jones did for Michael Jackson. Once I have established a stable income and supported my father's disability, I plan to pursue a Master’s in Sound Arts and Industry at Northwestern University. This advanced degree equips me to impart my knowledge at community colleges. I aim to secure a position within the music department at Elgin Community College as a music professor. In this role, I intend to mentor students, assist them in achieving their aspirations, and demonstrate their true potential.
As someone who grew up in a broken home, raised by a single parent, and relying on social security support, I am grateful for the financial assistance I received that enabled me to pursue my dreams. This experience has inspired me to believe in the power of giving so that others can achieve their goals, just as I have been able to.
