Janie Mae "Loving You to Wholeness" Scholarship
When I was eleven years old, I immigrated to Green Bay, Wisconsin from Somalia. On my first day at Eisenhower Elementary, I felt alone. I could not speak a word of English, and I did not have any friends. It was a teacher who invested the time in developing a relationship with me that helped Green Bay become a home. This teacher helped me in learning English, and this teacher placed me on the path to college. My name is Mohamed Sheylila, and I am 17 years old, I would like to be a teacher because I have always been the one who’s eager to make a difference: I want to be the teacher that children remember for the rest of their lives even after school. The love that I have always had for children is what drew me to teaching, and the love for learning is where I received my passion for teaching. I have been inspired by many teachers in the past, who have had a positive impact on my life, and these are the ones that I have viewed as a mentor and leader. These teachers built relationships with me -answered my questions, and motivated me to improve. As I look at my future as a teacher, I remember the kindness that was afforded to me by that one teacher who saw my potential and helped me become the person that I am today. A teacher is the most important role model in a student's life. The interaction in the classroom has an effect on how a student views themselves as well as fosters a student's love of learning. Teachers pass on valuable knowledge, skills, and values to the students they teach helping to create informed and responsible citizens in our society. My goal is to build students' confidence for them to believe in themselves. Students should be confident in whatever path they choose to follow. Teachers inspire creativity, encourage higher education, invite exploration, and encourage competition in events students might not otherwise have thought to do. One particular reason that I chose to pursue a career in the education field is because I believe that when teachers work individually and collectively they can improve and change the world. Teachers help inspire the future: doctors, lawyers, firemen, and teachers. A teacher instills the magic for a student to fully understand their potential in discovering themselves and their love of learning.
