Childhood is known for innocence and playfulness, my childhood was known for bombing and hiding. As a child, before coming to the United States, I had to hide from terrorists and church bombings while praying. As an immigrant child, I envied other children growing up for their privilege of just living their childhood. Their worst worry is when will the ice cream truck pass by, while I had to say bye to friends and family; while I had to watch my neighbors become orphans because terrorists were shooting at apartments, killing anyone that stood in their way, all to spark terror. Leaving me, an innocent child, hiding in fear away from the windows with my family where bullets won't reach. I lived through a country's revolution where not only was I accustomed to watching citizens get shot, bombed, or injured, I was watching people who practice my religion get killed in the midst of their prayers. All as I wondered when will it be me, was a thought competing with the ache of wanting to help the wounded and injured. From watching little kids becoming victims and martyrs, I aspired to become something of myself one day to help them. Becoming a doctor, a pediatric doctor has been and will always be my dream since then. Even though I live in a safe country today I have not forgotten the trauma that has pushed me to choose this path. Becoming a doctor will allow me to give my patients the future of health that the ones from back home will never have. In addition, it will open the gateway for me to have the license to go back home and help the fortunate kids who should have been helped after being shot and killed, rather than being left being or not having enough medical doctors to treat them. Lastly, I believe that in order to make a change it has to start with you, on a micro level. I dream to be the change, to be the difference. Yet, in order to do that, I still have to go through setbacks and walls that others face. The obstacles have changed since, today, my obstacles are not bombs but a financial disadvantage. Struggling to pay for school to reach that goal after finical aid and loans can imitate the feeling of getting your dreams stomped on. Receiving this scholarship will not only help me to pay for half of my senior year tuition. It will allow me to focus better on my last year and my MCATS instead of working two jobs in order to cover some of my expenses, tuition, and loans.
