I've dreamt of attending college to pursue medicine since I was a little girl. I used to put on my dad's oversized white button-ups and pretend it was my lab coat trailing behind me as I walked to my “operating room”- my bedroom. When I closed my eyes and thought about my life as a medical scientist, I always envisioned myself cloaked in a white coat treating patients.

My name is Michelle Leviyev, and I am a low-income, first-generation college student and immigrant. As I pursue my aspirations to become a nurse practitioner, I navigate a journey marked by resilience, determination, and a deep commitment to both my education and my community. Amidst the challenges of working multiple jobs to support my college education, I find solace and purpose in giving back to my community through volunteering at my synagogue.
Growing up in an immigrant family, I was instilled with a strong sense of community and the importance of supporting one another. Despite the financial constraints we faced, my parents emphasized the value of giving back and making a positive impact in the lives of others. This ethos has guided my actions and inspired me to seek opportunities to serve my community, even amidst the demands of pursuing higher education.
One such avenue through which I contribute to my community is through volunteering at my synagogue. Recognizing the need to provide support and guidance to women who may not have the opportunity to learn about their heritage and culture, I am actively involved in giving religious and motivational speeches. These sessions serve as a platform for women to connect, learn, and draw inspiration from their shared cultural heritage.
Balancing these commitments alongside my college education is no small feat. To support my academic endeavors, I work tirelessly at multiple jobs, juggling responsibilities and time with precision. Each job represents a stepping stone towards my goal of attaining a degree and fulfilling my dream of becoming a nurse practitioner. Despite the long hours and sacrifices required, I am unwavering in my commitment to both my education and my community.
Through these volunteer efforts, I am able to impart knowledge, foster community cohesion, and empower women to embrace their identity with pride and confidence. It is deeply rewarding to witness the impact of these sessions, as women leave feeling empowered, informed, and connected to their roots.
Despite the demands of balancing work, academics, and volunteer commitments, my dedication to serving my community remains unwavering. I am acutely aware of the transformative power of education and the opportunities it affords individuals to uplift themselves and their communities. As I pursue my aspirations to become a nurse practitioner, I am driven by a dual sense of purpose – to provide compassionate care to those in need and to advocate for the well-being of my community.
One defining moment that solidified my commitment to both nursing and community service occurred during a classroom incident. Witnessing the impact of timely intervention and compassionate care on a fellow student in distress reinforced my belief in the profound difference healthcare professionals can make in the lives of others. It underscored the importance of both clinical expertise and a deep-seated commitment to serving one's community.
In conclusion, my journey towards becoming a nurse practitioner is guided by resilience, determination, and a steadfast commitment to both my education and my community. Despite the challenges posed by working multiple jobs to support my college education, I remain dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others. Through volunteering at my synagogue, I strive to empower women, foster community connections, and promote cultural understanding and appreciation.

As we reflected on the race and recounted the highlights of the day, it became abundantly clear that "Super Mario Kart" wasn't just a game to us – it was a portal to a realm where cherished memories were forged, and bonds between siblings and cousins were strengthened. The strategic maneuvers, the friendly competition, and the shared moments of triumph and defeat were woven into the fabric of our childhood, making "Super Mario Kart" more than just a game, but rather a cornerstone of our family's shared experiences.
The atmosphere on that fateful afternoon was electric as we gathered around the television, controllers in hand, ready to embark on another epic race through the Mushroom Kingdom. With the familiar sound of the starting signal, we catapulted into action, hurtling around vibrant tracks and navigating treacherous obstacles with the precision of seasoned racers.
As the race unfolded on the iconic Rainbow Road track, tensions ran high as each twist and turn brought us closer to the finish line. My cousin had managed to secure the coveted first place, leaving my sister and me trailing behind. However, in a stroke of strategic brilliance, my sister seized an opportunity to turn the tables.
As we approached the final lap, my sister and I found ourselves trailing behind our cousin in first place. Unwilling to let him claim victory so easily, my sister revealed her trump card: the powerful Blue Spiny Shell. With a mischievous grin, she unleashed the devastating shell, knowing full well its ability to target the racer in first place.
However, I had a sneaky plan of my own. Sensing the impending threat, I made a split-second decision to slow down, allowing my cousin to pull ahead while I dropped back to avoid the blast radius of the incoming shell. As the Blue Spiny Shell homed in on its target, my cousin's kart was engulfed in a burst of blue light, sending him careening off course and allowing me to slip past him and claim victory.
The moment was met with a mixture of shock and laughter as my sister, and I celebrated our unexpected triumph. Though our cousins protested, they couldn't help but admire the strategic maneuver that had secured our victory. It was a testament to the playful rivalry and camaraderie that defined our multiplayer sessions of "Super Mario Kart."
As we basked in the glow of our victory, we realized that "Super Mario Kart" held a deeper significance beyond just a game. It was a medium through which we forged lasting memories and strengthened the bonds of family. The laughter, the camaraderie, and the shared moments of triumph and defeat were the building blocks of our cherished relationships.
In the years that followed, "Super Mario Kart" remained a cherished tradition in our family, a nostalgic reminder of the joyous moments we shared together. Though our lives may have taken us down different paths and we may not play as often as we used to, the memories we created through "Super Mario Kart" remain etched in our hearts.
Today, as we look back on those carefree afternoons spent racing around the tracks of the Mushroom Kingdom, we are reminded of the enduring power of family and the irreplaceable bonds that unite us. "Super Mario Kart" wasn't just a game – it was a catalyst for lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories, a testament to the enduring legacy of Nintendo's iconic franchise.

As a girl who has always been fascinated by science and has a desire to help others, pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner has always been a dream of mine. However, the journey towards this goal has not always been easy. As a first-generation immigrant and the first in my family to go to college, I have faced several challenges along the way.
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is learning English as a second language. When I was a child, I struggled to keep up with my classes and understand the material because of my limited language skills. This was a very difficult and frustrating experience, and I often felt discouraged and unsure of myself.
However, I was fortunate to have a science teacher who was very patient and understanding. She took the time to help me understand the material, and she always encouraged me to ask questions and seek help when I needed it. This teacher was Jewish, and I believe that her faith and values had a positive impact on the way she approached her work and her students.
It was through this experience that I discovered my love for chemistry and biology. I was fascinated by the way these subjects explained the world around me and how they could be used to improve people's health and well-being. My science teacher recognized my passion for these subjects and told me that I would make a great doctor one day. This comment was a turning point for me, and it inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field.
Since then, my science teacher has remained a source of inspiration and motivation for me. I often think back to her words of encouragement and the positive impact she had on my life, and it helps me to stay focused and determined as I work towards my goal of becoming a nurse practitioner.
In addition to my love for science and my desire to help others, I am also attracted to the flexibility of the nurse practitioner career. As a mother, I want to be able to have a rewarding career while also being able to spend time with my family and fulfill my responsibilities as a parent. The flexible hours of a nurse practitioner allow me to do this, and I believe that this career will allow me to be a great Jewish mother while also making a meaningful contribution to the world and doing what I love.
Despite the challenges I have faced as a first-generation immigrant and the first in my family to go to college, I am determined to succeed. I believe that my unique perspective and experiences can be an asset in the medical field, and I am excited to use my knowledge and skills to make a difference in the lives of others. I am grateful for the support and encouragement of those around me, and I am determined to work hard and achieve my dream of becoming a nurse practitioner.
