Henry Respert Alzheimer's and Dementia Awareness Scholarship
Introduction: Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness that casts a shadow over not only the individual affected but also their family and the community around them. My personal encounter with this affliction occurred when my maternal grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. During my teenage years, my family and I welcomed him into our home, providing him with the care and support he needed until he peacefully passed away. As a black American from a humble background and the first in my family to attend college, this experience profoundly impacted me. Alongside my love for storytelling and my identification as pansexual, I discovered invaluable lessons that have shaped my perspective and aspirations. Family Impact: The presence of Alzheimer's disease permeated every aspect of our family's life. Witnessing my once-vibrant grandfather gradually succumb to forgetfulness and confusion was both heart-wrenching and enlightening. The burden of caregiving fell on my family's shoulders, challenging our emotional resilience and financial stability. We tirelessly provided him with companionship, managed his medication, and adapted our routines to his needs. These responsibilities forced me to mature quickly, teaching me the importance of empathy, patience, and selflessness. Despite the hardships, our collective efforts created a bond that strengthened our familial ties, underscoring the significance of unity in times of adversity. Community Impact: Alzheimer's disease extends its reach beyond the confines of the family unit, affecting the broader community. Witnessing my grandfather's struggle brought attention to the lack of resources and support available for families grappling with dementia-related illnesses, particularly within disadvantaged communities. Recognizing this disparity, I felt compelled to take action. I actively engaged with local support groups, volunteered at senior care facilities, and organized community events to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's research. Through these endeavors, I witnessed the profound impact of community support, demonstrating the transformative power of collective action in combating this insidious disease. The Power of Storytelling: Throughout this journey, I found solace in my passion for storytelling. As an aspiring artist pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with a specialization in illustration, I discovered that art has a unique ability to transcend language and connect individuals. I realized that stories have the power to humanize the experiences of those affected by Alzheimer's, shedding light on their struggles and triumphs. Through my artwork, I aim to create visual narratives that capture the essence of memory, empathy, and the profound impact of Alzheimer's disease on individuals and communities. By sharing these stories, I hope to foster understanding, compassion, and inspire positive change. Personal Identity: In addition to my experiences with Alzheimer's disease, my personal identity as a pansexual individual has influenced my perspective on life and advocacy. Recognizing the diversity of human experiences and the importance of inclusivity, I have become an advocate for equal rights and acceptance. My encounters with dementia-related illnesses have further reinforced my commitment to combating discrimination and promoting empathy in society. Through education, art, and storytelling, I strive to create a world where every individual, regardless of their background or orientation, can live with dignity, understanding, and respect. Conclusion: Encountering Alzheimer's disease through the lens of my grandfather's journey has left an indelible mark on my life. It has taught me the importance of unity within families facing adversity, the necessity of community support, and the transformative power of storytelling. As a pansexual individual from a marginalized background, I am driven to utilize my passion for art and illustration to promote understanding, acceptance, and equality. By sharing the stories of those affected by Alzheimer's, I hope to inspire compassion and contribute to a brighter future where all individuals are treated with dignity and empathy.
    Charles Pulling Sr. Memorial Scholarship
As an adult learner, I embarked on a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth when I made the decision to return to college after losing my job during the pandemic. My name is Michelle, and I come from a humble background as a black American from a financially disadvantaged family. Being the first person in my family to attend college, I am determined to break the cycle and create a better future not only for myself but for those who will follow in my footsteps. Nurture played a significant role in shaping my aspirations. Growing up, I was captivated by the power of storytelling. Whether it was through books, comics, or films, I found solace and inspiration within the pages and screens that transported me to worlds beyond my own. This love for storytelling ignited a passion within me and became the driving force behind my dreams. My ultimate goal is to establish a publishing company that centers on novels and comics featuring BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and/or LGBTQ protagonists. Representation matters, and I believe in the power of diverse narratives to reshape our perspectives, challenge stereotypes, and foster empathy. Through my publishing company, I aim to amplify marginalized voices, providing a platform for stories that are often overlooked or dismissed by mainstream publishing. As a pansexual individual, I have personally experienced the importance of LGBTQ representation. Growing up, I struggled to find characters in books or comics who shared my experiences or identities. This lack of representation left me feeling invisible and disconnected. I want to change that narrative. By creating content that authentically portrays the diverse identities and experiences of the LGBTQ community, I hope to empower others, foster understanding, and contribute to a more inclusive society. Returning to college as a non-traditional student has been both challenging and rewarding. It has required immense dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice. However, my passion for storytelling, coupled with my desire to effect positive change, has fueled my drive to do more. Education is a powerful tool that not only equips me with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in my chosen field but also empowers me to challenge societal norms, break down barriers, and pave the way for future generations. Applying for the Charles Pulling Sr. Scholarship resonates deeply with me. Just like Charles, I understand the transformative power of education and how it can create opportunities for individuals and their families. This scholarship not only honors his memory but also recognizes the potential within non-traditional students who are driven by a shared determination to provide a better life for themselves and their loved ones. In conclusion, as a non-traditional student, I am motivated by my personal experiences, my commitment to representation, and my desire to make a meaningful impact in the world. Returning to college has allowed me to embark on a journey of self-discovery, where I can fuse my passion for storytelling with my aspiration to empower marginalized voices. With the support of the Charles Pulling Sr. Scholarship, I believe I can continue to strive for excellence, break barriers, and create a more inclusive future through the power of education.

As I reflect on my life's journey, I recognize that my pro-life position has been deeply influenced by my upbringing and personal experiences. Growing up, I was raised in a family that instilled in me the values of compassion and standing up for what is right. My parents, who were passionate activists themselves, taught me the importance of valuing all human life and advocating for those who cannot speak up for themselves. These early lessons laid the foundation for my belief in preserving life in all its forms. Moreover, being a compassionate person by nature, I have always felt a strong sense of empathy towards others. This empathy extends to recognizing the inherent value and dignity of every human being, regardless of their circumstances. Additionally, I engage in discussions and debates surrounding pro-life issues, approaching them with respect and empathy for differing viewpoints. I believe that constructive dialogue is essential in fostering a society that cherishes and protects life. By listening attentively and finding common ground, I hope to bridge gaps and create a space where meaningful conversations can take place. Ultimately, my pro-life position is rooted in my belief that every human life holds inherent value and deserves to be protected and nurtured. It wasn't until recent changes in the Maryland Healthcare system that I was able to afford psychiatric and therapeutic help. I was at my lowest during the pandemic and constantly plagued with thoughts of suicide ideation. I lost my job, and my home, and could not find work. The constant rejection demolished my self-worth. Raised by a teen mom who was incredibly supportive but was recently diagnosed with cancer. Title: Embracing Diversity and Empowering Voices: My Journey of Personal Growth and Career Aspirations Introduction: As an adult learner who chose to return to college after facing the hardships of unemployment during the pandemic, my journey has been marked by resilience, determination, and a deep-rooted passion for storytelling. Coming from a marginalized background as a black American from a financially disadvantaged family, I am driven to create positive change through the power of representation. In this essay, I will share how the LGBTQ+ community impacts me personally and discuss why I chose the major I did, all with the aim of creating a publishing company that champions the voices of BIPOC and LGBTQ individuals. The Impact of the LGBTQ+ Community: Being pansexual, my identity is deeply connected to the LGBTQ+ community. It has played a significant role in shaping my understanding of diversity, acceptance, and the importance of inclusivity. Witnessing the struggles faced by individuals within this community has fueled my desire to create a world where everyone can feel seen, heard, and valued for who they truly are. The LGBTQ+ community has shown me the strength and resilience that arise from embracing one's authentic self, and it has taught me the power of unity, compassion, and empathy. Choosing my Major: Art and Design with a Focus on Storytelling: My chosen major, Art and Design, serves as the perfect platform for me to express my creativity and bring stories to life. Through visual arts, I aim to foster understanding and bridge gaps in society, enabling diverse voices to be heard and celebrated. By specializing in illustration, I can harness the power of imagery to create impactful narratives that resonate with readers from all walks of life. The importance of representation is at the core of my decision to focus on storytelling. Growing up, I yearned for characters in novels and comics who reflected my own experiences as a person of color and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Sadly, such representation was scarce. This lack of diverse voices inspired me to pursue a career where I can fill this void and amplify marginalized stories. I want to create a publishing company that showcases novels and comics featuring BIPOC and LGBTQ+ protagonists, empowering readers who have felt underrepresented and marginalized. By telling stories through diverse perspectives, my goal is to inspire empathy, challenge stereotypes, and break down societal barriers. Through my work, I strive to dismantle prejudice and foster a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and accepted. Conclusion: As an adult learner with a deep-rooted passion for storytelling and a commitment to championing underrepresented voices, I am dedicated to making a positive impact on society. My journey, influenced by my experiences as a black American from a disadvantaged background and my identity as a pansexual individual, has shaped my aspirations and fueled my desire to create a publishing company that celebrates the diversity and authenticity of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ narratives. I believe that representation is a catalyst for social change, and through my major in Art and Design, specializing in illustration, I am equipped with the tools to bring this vision to life. By empowering others and providing a platform for their stories to be heard, I strive to foster a more inclusive and empathetic world. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my goals and making a lasting impact on the literary and artistic landscape. Together, we can embrace diversity, celebrate individuality, and create a future where every person feels seen and valued, regardless of their background or identity.

Living sustainably is a priority for me, and I make intentional choices in my daily life to reduce my carbon footprint. One of the significant choices I have made is adopting a vegetarian lifestyle. By eliminating meat from my diet, I am reducing the demand for animal agriculture, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and water pollution. Choosing plant-based alternatives not only benefits the environment but also promotes animal welfare and supports a more ethical food system. In addition to my dietary choices, I have taken the initiative to start my own container balcony garden. Growing my own fruits, vegetables, and herbs allows me to reduce food waste, minimize transportation emissions associated with grocery shopping, and ensure that the produce I consume is organic and free from harmful pesticides. It also gives me a deeper connection to the food I eat, as I witness the process of cultivation from seed to plate. Beyond these specific actions, I strive to adopt other sustainable practices in my daily routine. I am conscious of my energy consumption and make an effort to reduce electricity usage by turning off lights and appliances when not in use. I have replaced traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient LEDs throughout my living space. Additionally, I make use of natural light during the day, which not only reduces energy consumption but also provides a more pleasant and vibrant atmosphere. Water conservation is another important aspect of my sustainable lifestyle. I take shorter showers, fix any leaky faucets promptly, and collect rainwater for my balcony garden. These small changes help to reduce water waste and conserve this precious resource. Living sustainably and reducing my carbon footprint is crucial to me for several reasons. First and foremost, it is my responsibility as a global citizen to protect and preserve the planet for future generations. Climate change and environmental degradation pose significant threats to ecosystems, wildlife, and human well-being. By actively participating in sustainable practices, I am doing my part to mitigate these impacts and create a more sustainable future. Furthermore, reducing my carbon footprint is essential for combating climate change. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted from human activities contribute to the warming of the planet, resulting in adverse effects such as rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and habitat destruction. By making conscious choices to reduce my emissions, I am contributing to the collective effort of mitigating climate change and ensuring a more stable and habitable planet for all. Living sustainably also aligns with my values of mindfulness and compassion. By being mindful of my consumption patterns and their environmental implications, I am making a conscious effort to live in harmony with nature and respect the interconnectedness of all living beings. It allows me to express compassion not only towards the environment but also towards the communities and individuals affected by climate change and environmental injustices. In conclusion, I make intentional choices in my daily life to live sustainably and reduce my carbon footprint. Adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, growing my own food, conserving energy and water, and being mindful of my consumption patterns are some of the ways I contribute to a more sustainable future. I believe it is essential to reduce our carbon footprint to protect the planet, combat climate change, and promote a more compassionate and equitable world. Through these actions, I hope to inspire others to join me on the path towards sustainability and create a positive impact on our planet and its inhabitants.

Growing up in a single-parent household, I faced numerous challenges and obstacles. My mother, a strong and resilient woman, worked tirelessly to provide for our family. Despite her efforts, we often struggled to make ends meet, and financial stability remained elusive. As the first person in my family to pursue higher education, I felt the weight of expectations and the need to break free from the cycle of poverty. In the midst of adversity, art became my solace. It offered me a sanctuary where I could explore my imagination, find solace, and express my authentic self. Through art, I found healing, catharsis, and empowerment. It allowed me to transform my pain, struggles, and emotions into something beautiful and meaningful. Storytelling holds a special place in my heart. I am captivated by narratives that resonate with the human experience, transporting us to different worlds and broadening our perspectives. As an artist, I strive to create visual stories that engage, provoke, and inspire. Through my illustrations, I aim to ignite conversations, challenge societal norms, and shed light on underrepresented voices and narratives. Being a single parent myself has further influenced my decision to pursue the arts. As a nurturing parent, I understand the importance of fostering creativity, resilience, and self-expression in my child's life. I want to lead by example, demonstrating that dreams can be pursued, even in the face of adversity. By pursuing my passion for art, I hope to inspire my child and others who face similar circumstances, showing them that their aspirations are valid and attainable. My journey as a pansexual individual has also shaped my perspective as an artist. I believe in the power of art to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and foster inclusivity. Through my work, I strive to create spaces where diverse identities and experiences are celebrated and represented. The emotional scars of my abusive and neglectful childhood have left me grappling with depression, anxiety, and insecurity. Art has become an essential part of my healing process, allowing me to confront and navigate these challenges. It serves as a therapeutic outlet, enabling me to channel my emotions into creative expression and find solace in the act of creating. Returning to college as an adult learner after losing my job during the pandemic has been a transformative experience. It has provided me with the opportunity to further develop my artistic skills, expand my knowledge, and connect with a community of like-minded individuals. I am committed to honing my craft, pushing the boundaries of my creativity, and embracing the endless possibilities that the art world offers. In conclusion, my passion for art stems from a combination of personal experiences, a desire for self-expression, and a yearning to make a positive impact. It is the language through which I tell my stories, heal my wounds, and advocate for change. As I continue on this artistic journey, I carry with me the resilience of a single-parent household, the strength of my identity as a pansexual individual, and the determination to create a better future for myself and my child.

Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is a serious offense with far-reaching consequences that can impact individuals, families, and communities. The effects of DUIs can be devastating, resulting in loss of life, physical injuries, emotional trauma, legal consequences, and financial burdens. It is crucial to raise awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence and implement strategies to prevent these incidents from occurring. One of the most profound effects of DUIs is the loss of life. Every year, numerous lives are tragically cut short due to drunk driving accidents. These accidents not only rob families of their loved ones but also leave a lasting impact on communities. The emotional toll on the families and friends left behind is immeasurable, as they have to grapple with grief, pain, and a sense of loss that can last a lifetime. In addition to fatalities, DUIs often result in severe physical injuries. Innocent individuals can suffer life-altering injuries due to the irresponsible actions of an intoxicated driver. These injuries can range from broken bones and lacerations to traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord damage. Such injuries not only cause immense physical pain but also require long-term medical treatment and rehabilitation, leading to significant financial burdens for the victims and their families. Furthermore, DUI convictions can have serious legal consequences. Offenders may face fines, license suspension or revocation, mandatory alcohol education programs, probation, or even incarceration. These legal ramifications can impact an individual's personal and professional life, making it challenging to secure employment, maintain relationships, and regain trust within the community. To prevent DUI incidents, it is crucial to implement effective strategies. Education and awareness campaigns play a vital role in informing the public about the dangers and consequences of driving under the influence. These campaigns can be conducted through various mediums, such as television, social media, community events, and school programs. By increasing knowledge and understanding, individuals are more likely to make responsible choices and avoid getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. Additionally, law enforcement efforts should be strengthened to deter and detect DUI offenses. Frequent sobriety checkpoints, stricter penalties, and increased patrols can help create a sense of accountability and discourage impaired driving. Swift and consistent enforcement of DUI laws is essential to ensure that offenders face appropriate consequences for their actions. Promoting alternative transportation options is another effective strategy in preventing DUIs. Encouraging the use of designated drivers, public transportation, rideshare services, and community-based programs can provide individuals with safe alternatives to driving under the influence. Collaboration with local businesses, taxi services, and ride-sharing companies can help ensure that these options are readily available and accessible. Moreover, addressing the underlying issues that contribute to DUI incidents is crucial. Providing support and resources for individuals dealing with substance abuse and addiction can help prevent them from getting behind the wheel while impaired. Accessible treatment programs, counseling services, and support groups can aid in recovery and reduce the likelihood of repeat offenses. In conclusion, the effects of DUIs are far-reaching and devastating. To prevent these incidents, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Raising awareness, enforcing DUI laws, promoting alternative transportation options, and addressing underlying issues can collectively contribute to a safer road environment. By working together as a community, we can strive to eliminate the devastating consequences of DUIs and create a future where responsible choices prevail.

Witnessing the joy on their faces as they discovered their own artistic talents was truly fulfilling. This experience had a profound impact on me, as it reinforced my belief in the transformative power of art. It made me realize that art can serve as a vehicle for self-expression, healing, and empowerment, especially for individuals facing adversity. Since then, I have remained committed to using my artistic abilities to make a positive impact in my community. Through volunteering at local art events and mentoring aspiring young artists, I continue to contribute to the cultural growth and development of my surroundings. In conclusion, receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate the financial burden on my journey towards higher education but also enable me to fully dedicate myself to my passion for storytelling through art. It would open doors to invaluable opportunities, enabling me to realize my dreams and make a lasting impact in my community. As a black American hailing from a humble background, and as the first person in my family to pursue a college education, I have personally witnessed the struggles and challenges faced by the disadvantaged in our society. It is my firm belief that it is absolutely necessary for society to change its way of responding to the problems of the disadvantaged. In this essay, I will present compelling reasons why such a transformation is imperative. Equal Opportunities: Society must recognize that every individual, regardless of their socio-economic background, deserves equal opportunities to succeed. The disadvantaged often face systemic barriers that hinder their progress, such as limited access to quality education, healthcare, and job opportunities. By reevaluating societal structures and policies, we can address these disparities and provide a level playing field for everyone. Breaking the Cycle of Poverty: Changing our response to the problems faced by the disadvantaged is crucial in breaking the cycle of poverty. Many individuals from impoverished backgrounds are trapped in a perpetual struggle due to limited resources and support networks. By investing in programs that promote education, job training, and mentorship, we can empower disadvantaged individuals to escape the cycle of poverty and contribute meaningfully to society. Fostering Diversity and Inclusion: Embracing a new approach towards the disadvantaged fosters a society that values diversity and inclusion. By recognizing and appreciating the unique perspectives and experiences of individuals from different backgrounds, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious society. This shift in mindset leads to greater social cohesion, as we learn from one another's struggles and triumphs, breaking down stereotypes and biases. Economic Growth and Innovation: Addressing the problems faced by the disadvantaged also has significant implications for economic growth and innovation. When we provide resources and support to those who have been historically marginalized, we unlock their potential and creativity. By tapping into this vast talent pool, we promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development. A diverse and empowered society cultivates new ideas and perspectives, leading to breakthroughs in various fields. Moral Imperative: From a moral standpoint, it is our duty as a society to help those who are less fortunate. No individual should be held back solely because of their background or circumstances beyond their control. By changing our response, we demonstrate empathy, compassion, and solidarity with the disadvantaged. It is a reflection of our collective commitment to fairness, justice, and human dignity. In conclusion, transforming society's response to the problems of the disadvantaged is not only a moral imperative but a necessity for the well-being and progress of our communities. By providing equal opportunities, breaking the cycle of poverty, fostering diversity and inclusion, stimulating economic growth, and upholding our moral obligations, we can create a more equitable and compassionate society. As a black American from a poor family and the first person in my family to attend college, I am hopeful that society will continue to evolve, embracing change, and working towards a future where everyone has an equal chance to succeed.
