As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and a student pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering, I believe that I have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the world through my activism and community service. My journey as a gay person has not been easy, but it has given me the tools and the passion to fight for equality and justice for all people. One of the ways in which I plan to make a positive impact on the world is by using my skills as a biomedical engineer to develop innovative solutions to healthcare problems facing marginalized communities. This could include designing medical devices or creating new treatments for diseases that disproportionately affect people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underserved populations. By working to improve healthcare outcomes for these communities, I hope to help reduce the disparities in access to care and promote greater health equity. In addition to my work in biomedical engineering, I also plan to engage in community service and activism in a variety of ways. One of my passions is education, and I believe that empowering young people with knowledge and resources is one of the most effective ways to create positive change in the world. I plan to volunteer with local LGBTQ+ youth organizations. I hope to provide mentorship and support to young people who may be struggling with their own identities and facing discrimination or stigma. By helping these individuals build self-confidence and resilience, I believe we can create a brighter future for all members of the LGBTQ+ community. Another area where I hope to make a difference is in political advocacy. By working with organizations that lobby for LGBTQ+ rights and other progressive causes, I hope to help create a more just and equitable society. This could include working to pass laws that protect the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, advocating for policies that promote social justice and equality, and pushing for greater diversity and representation in government and other positions of power. Through my activism and advocacy, I hope to help create a world where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, or any other characteristic. Finally, I believe that one of the most important things I can do to make a positive impact on the world is to lead by example. This means living my life in a way that is consistent with my values and beliefs, and being a role model for others who may be struggling to find their own path. By embracing my identity as a gay person and a biomedical engineer, and using my skills and resources to help others, I hope to inspire others to pursue their own passions and make a difference in their own communities. In conclusion, I believe that there are many ways in which I can make a positive impact on the world through my activism and community service. By using my skills as a biomedical engineer, and engaging in community service and activism, I can inspire great change in my community.
    Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
The loss of a close family member or loved one can be a life-altering event that changes our perspective and priorities. In my case, losing my mother to an overdose when I was only seven years old was a tragic experience that has shaped my life in many ways. Her passing taught me that life is fragile and that we should cherish every moment we have with our loved ones. It also inspired me to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, where I hope to make a difference in the lives of others who may be struggling with similar health issues. As a child, I struggled to make sense of my mother's death. It was a confusing and painful experience that left me with many questions and emotions that I didn't know how to handle. However, over time, I began to realize that my mother's passing had given me a gift. It has shown me how precious life is and how important it is to make the most of every opportunity we have. This realization has made me into the person I am today. One of the most significant ways that my mother's death has impacted me is in my career aspirations. When I was younger, I had always been interested in science and technology, but it wasn't until I started learning about biomedical engineering that I found my true passion. I was fascinated by the idea of using technology and engineering to improve people's health and quality of life. I knew that this was the field that I wanted to pursue. In my studies and research, I've come to understand the importance of finding ways to prevent and treat health problems, including addiction. I know that addiction is a complex issue that affects not only the individual but also their families and loved ones. Through my future work as a biomedical engineer, I hope to contribute to the development of new technologies and treatments that can help prevent addiction and support recovery for those who are struggling. In conclusion, the loss of my mother at a young age was a traumatic experience that has influenced my life in many ways. It has taught me to appreciate every moment and to focus on what matters most in life. It has also inspired me to pursue a career in biomedical engineering, where I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of others. While I will always carry the pain of losing my mother, I am determined to use her memory as a source of motivation and inspiration to achieve my goals and make a difference in the world.

Transfemoral prosthetics improved tremendously by providing amputees with a range of functionalities that mimic natural human motion. However, there is still room for improvement, and many amputees still face challenges wiht their prosthetic devices. As a high school student, I was tasked with creating a solution to a problem using biomimicry, and I decided to model it after an elephant trunk. The trunk of an elephant is one of the most flexible and strong appendages that can be found in the animal kingdom. I believed that these features could be used to create a prosthetic limb that would provide amputees with a range of natural movements. I began by studying the anatomy and mechanics of the elephant trunk, analyzing its muscle structure and range of motion. I was inspired by the way that the elephant trunk could bend and move in any direction, and I believed that a prosthetic limb modeled after this natural appendage could be a game-changer for amputees. To bring my idea to life, I started by sketching out my design concept and creating digital drawings of the prosthetic limb that would mimic the movement and functionality of the elephant trunk. I knew that a physical prototype was necessary to test and refine the design. As a result, I began working on creating a 3D model of the prosthetic limb using CAD software. If I had the money and resources to further develop this project, I would first make a physical prototype from the concept drawings using 3D printing or CNC machining. The next step is to test and optimize the prototype by performing mechanical and sensory tests to ensure that the prosthetic limb meets the desired specifications. I could also gather feedback from amputees to improve the design and functionality of the prosthetic. Once the prototype has been optimized and refined, I would focus on scaling up production. This would involve sourcing the materials and components that are required for mass production. Additionally, setting up a manufacturing facility will help make all of them. I would ensure that the prosthetic limb meets all the regulatory standards and obtain any necessary certifications. Finally, I would develop a marketing plan and establish distribution channels to reach potential users of the prosthetic. This could involve partnering with clinics and hospitals that specialize in prosthetics, as well as marketing the product directly to amputees and their families. I would also ensure that I have a system in place for servicing and maintaining the prosthetic limb. In conclusion, turning the idea of a trans femoral leg prosthetic modeled after an elephant trunk into a physical product requires careful planning, design, and execution. By following a detailed plan, like the one outlined above, a high-quality prosthetic limb can be developed that can improve the lives of amputees. The use of natural designs and technology can lead to better results for those who depend on prosthetic limbs to complete daily tasks. I hope that one day, this concept can become a reality, and that amputees can benefit from the natural movements of the elephant trunk in their prosthetic limbs.
