As a current student at California Baptist University studying Nursing, I am determined to achieve my dream of becoming a registered nurse. But my aspirations go beyond just a healthcare career in a hospital setting. I have a burning passion for bringing healing to those in extreme poverty in third-world countries.
Throughout my life, I have always had a deep love for people and their stories. I believe that everyone has something valuable to offer, and I never want to stop learning from others' backgrounds and experiences. This has led me to develop strong leadership skills, from my time as a middle school youth leader at my local church to being the president of the student council in high school and various past jobs.
What truly drives me is the opportunity to build others up from the ground up, to help them find confidence in themselves, and to bring healing to their hearts. I have always been drawn to vulnerable and authentic conversations, and it is in those moments that I feel most fulfilled.
Outside of my academic pursuits, I have always loved running. I remember participating in a 5K charity run for Chelsea King in San Diego, where their motto was "Be a change maker." Since then, I have lived with the constant desire to impact the world positively.
I am a driven and dedicated person who wants to keep moving forward, no matter how small the steps are, to achieve whatever goal I have. I wish never to take an opportunity for granted, and I have a great amount of compassion in my heart that is ready to pour into whatever I set my mind.

I am passionate about nursing because it offers a unique opportunity to care for patients physically and emotionally. Nursing allows me to form meaningful connections with my patients, learning about their lives beyond the clinical setting and making them feel genuinely seen and valued. Listening to patients’ stories, discovering their interests, or understanding who they are as individuals outside their health struggles is profoundly fulfilling. These moments of connection make my work rewarding and deeply humanizing, reminding me of the power of empathy in healing.
What excites me most about nursing is the chance to make my patients feel heard and cared for. When I learn something new about a patient—their favorite hobby, a cherished memory, or how they’re working towards something allows me to show that I genuinely care about them as a whole person, not just someone needing medical treatment. These small but significant gestures foster trust and comfort, allowing patients to feel supported during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives.
At the end of each shift, I hope to find satisfaction in knowing I made a positive difference. Whether providing comfort, offering encouragement, or simply sitting with someone in silence, I want my patients to feel appreciated, understood, and, above all, loved. To me, the emotional aspect of nursing is just as crucial as the physical. When patients are in pain or experiencing illness, their mental and emotional well-being often takes a toll. I believe nurses can significantly enhance the healing process by addressing these aspects.
Although I have not yet chosen a specialty within nursing, I am open to exploring various fields, whether pediatrics, labor and delivery, orthopedics, or another area. My ultimate goal remains to ensure that every patient I care for feels genuinely attended to and supported. Regardless of the specialty I pursue, I believe compassion will always be the cornerstone of my practice. Compassion is the universal quality that transcends specialties, allowing nurses to connect deeply with their patients and foster hope and healing.
The impact I hope to make in nursing stems from my belief in the transformative power of compassion. By showing kindness and empathy, I aim to influence patients’ outlook on their health and future positively. A simple word of encouragement or a reassuring presence can instill hope and make a significant difference in how patients perceive their journey toward recovery. When patients know someone genuinely looks out for them, it can alleviate feelings of loneliness and fear, replacing them with comfort and security.
I also recognize that nursing is about treating illnesses or injuries and caring for the whole person. This holistic approach draws me to the profession and inspires me to grow and learn. I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities of nursing, whether mastering technical skills, deepening my knowledge of human anatomy, or navigating the complexities of patient care. Each step forward brings me closer to my goal of becoming a nurse who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
In conclusion, my passion for nursing lies in its ability to merge technical expertise with heartfelt care. It is a profession that demands skill and humanity, and I am committed to bringing both to every patient I encounter. Through compassion, connection, and dedication, I hope to contribute to a healthcare environment where patients feel genuinely valued and supported. This vision of nursing excites me and reaffirms my commitment to the path I have chosen.

The nursing profession resonates deeply with me as it provides a profound opportunity to extend compassion, a virtue I hold in the highest regard. My fervent aspiration is to soar to the valued position of a registered nurse, dedicating myself wholeheartedly to acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to provide unwavering care to my future patients. My ideal profession involves serving in developing nations, where I can utilize both my compassion and practical skills to provide care for individuals facing extreme poverty and scarce resources, thereby offering them a sense of hope.
One significant milestone in my journey towards this goal is my acceptance into the Palomar Health Pathmaker Internship program. This prestigious opportunity will allow me to immerse myself in patient care and nursing assistance within Palomar Health's oncology department for a total of 240 hours. The mere thought of what I've experienced so far for the past month fills me with indescribable elation and anticipation. I am eager to be in this role and offer solace and support to those navigating the challenging waters of illness.
From assisting with partial bed baths to discharging patients out of the hospital, I've witnessed the tears of pain and the smiles of relief. The emotional journey of being an intern is profound; observing the dedication of nurses deeply inspires me. I eagerly anticipate becoming a nurse myself, eager to contribute fully. While I recognize my current role, I know my time to serve in that capacity will come. This internship has truly opened my eyes to the realities and rewards of nursing.
Although I have been fortunate enough to avoid significant health trials personally, witnessing a loved one's battle with bacterial meningitis deeply impacted me. Through their strenuous journey, I gained invaluable insight into the pivotal role nurses play in fostering hope and facilitating recovery. Their unwavering dedication served as a beacon of inspiration, igniting within me an unwavering resolve to mirror their compassion and bravery.
However, my aspiration transcends the mere fulfillment of professional duties. I aspire to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation for my patients. I yearn to instill within them a sense of resilience and optimism, guiding them through the darkest of times with unwavering support and compassion. My ultimate goal is not only to address their physical ailments but also to illuminate the path towards healing, offering a beacon of hope amidst adversity.
Driven by an unyielding passion for excellence, I pledge to exert every fiber of my being to pursue academic excellence in my journey towards becoming a nurse. Despite the inevitable challenges that lie ahead, I am steadfast in my commitment to pushing the boundaries of my capabilities and resolute in my determination to emerge as the finest nurse I can possibly be.
In embracing the noble vocation of nursing, I embark upon a journey filled with both challenges and triumphs, yet infused with an unwavering sense of purpose and fulfillment. With each patient encounter, I endeavor to leave an indelible mark of compassion and care, embodying the timeless ethos of nursing: healing, comfort, and inspiration.

My immersion in patient care volunteering within hospital settings has been transformative, offering me invaluable insights into the intricacies of human suffering and the profound impact of compassionate care. In the hospital environment, I learned to navigate through moments of vulnerability with empathy and understanding, fostering a deep connection with patients and their families. Witnessing the resilience of individuals facing health challenges ignited my passion to contribute to their healing journey, not just physically but holistically, addressing their emotional and psychological needs as well.
Moreover, my role as a middle school youth group leader provided a unique platform for mentorship and guidance. Engaging with young minds during their formative years, I realized the significance of active listening and genuine empathy in fostering trust and support. By creating a nurturing and inclusive environment, I encouraged open dialogue and empowered adolescents to voice their concerns and aspirations. Through mentorship, I learned to recognize the diverse needs and emotions of others, adapting my approach to offer personalized guidance and support. Each interaction served as an opportunity for mutual growth, as I gleaned valuable insights from the perspectives of the youth I mentored.
Combining my skills in patient care and mentorship, I am driven by a singular purpose: to empower others to pursue their best selves. As I embark on this journey, I am committed to leveraging my experiences to inspire and uplift those around me. In hospital wards, I will not only administer treatment but also offer words of encouragement and motivation, guiding patients through the often arduous journey of recovery. In classrooms and youth groups, I will serve as a mentor and role model, instilling in students the belief that they are capable of achieving greatness, no matter the obstacles they face.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a ripple effect of positivity and empowerment – to be a catalyst for change in the lives of those I encounter. Armed with my skills in patient care and mentorship, I am confident in my ability to make a meaningful difference, one interaction at a time.

Moreover, it's fueled by a strong desire to extend this care to underserved populations, particularly in third-world countries where access to healthcare is limited, and the need is dire.
From a young age, I've been drawn to the nursing profession because of its emphasis on empathy, compassion, and holistic care. I've always believed that healthcare is a fundamental human right, and everyone deserves to receive quality care regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location. This belief has been further reinforced by my experiences volunteering in local clinics and witnessing firsthand the impact that compassionate nursing care can have on individuals and communities.
However, my passion for nursing extends beyond borders. Belonging to the rugby family transcends mere sport; it's about embracing a way of life characterized by resilience, camaraderie, and shared experiences. When we talk about "getting in the dirt together and coming out better," it's a metaphor for the profound journey rugby entails. Rugby is a game that demands everything you've got – it's not just about physical prowess, but about mental fortitude, integrity, and unwavering passion.
Joining a rugby team means embracing a new family. Through countless practices, whether enduring the biting chill of snow, the sticky mud, the relentless rain, or the blazing sun, bonds are formed that go beyond the confines of the field. In this family, communication, trust, and responsibility are paramount. On the pitch, it's about knowing when to pass the ball, trusting your teammates to execute their roles, and shouldering the responsibility of your position with pride.
Tournaments become akin to cherished family gatherings, akin to spirited board game nights. Amidst the chaos and intensity of the matches, there's an underlying ethos of fun and togetherness. Every member learns the importance of finding joy amidst the high stakes and fierce competition. It's in these moments that shouts of encouragement, precise passes, thunderous tackles, and exhilarating runs forge unforgettable memories.
Indeed, no game is easy, but having teammates who stand by you makes the challenge worthwhile. They're there to lift you up when you fall, to share in your triumphs, and to provide unwavering support through every victory and defeat.
Reflecting on my time with the rugby family, I recall countless moments of shared laughter, tears, and everything in between. Whether it was finding solace in each other's arms after a tough loss or sharing lighthearted banter during rigorous training sessions, every experience strengthened our bond.
In essence, being part of a rugby family means navigating life's obstacles together, drawing strength from each other, and celebrating every triumph as a collective victory. It's about journeying through the dirt and challenges, hand in hand, and cheering each other on as we cross the finish line, not just in the game, but in life itself.
Experiencing the rugby family was truly a blessing, an opportunity that enriched my life in ways I could have never imagined. It's a unique community where bonds are forged through shared challenges, victories, and moments of pure camaraderie. Reflecting on my journey within this close-knit group, I am filled with gratitude for the countless lessons learned, friendships formed, and memories created.
Madison Victoria Keith Nursing Scholarship
I want to enter the nursing program that any striving pre-nursing student wants to be in because I want to impact people's lives. The effect I want to bring is to help them from their most challenging time in life and bring them joy and prosperity. My ultimate goal is to nurture any patient I encounter and make them feel known and heard while encouraging them during their struggles and recovery. So far, I have finished my first year at California Baptist University as a Pre-Nursing student with a 3.8 GPA and have made life-long friendships that I know won't break. The community I've found at CBU has encouraged me to bring more compassion to others and learn from other students about their personal life stories, struggles, and goals. This has sparked my eagerness to bring healing and warmth to people's hearts. When people are vulnerable with me, that's where I find the most joy because I want to be there for them when they're going through a hard time. Halfway through my freshman year, I found the Palomar Health Internship program online. I quickly applied, knowing that this would be an excellent opportunity to get my feet in the water while shadowing nurses in a hospital. I was interviewed and accepted, and now I'm in the program. I couldn't be more grateful, but now I have to take every moment I can to learn from helping patients with partial bed baths, transferring them from gurneys to beds, ambulating them to the restroom, and so much more. I've had to attend a Skills Day that Palomar Health led to evaluate that we practiced the skills and verbalization that we were required to learn to handle patients. It was an exhausting day, but now I know I'm prepared and equipped. I will be an official intern from June through August of 2024, helping patients in the Oncology department of the Escondido Palomar Health Hospital. I'm one step closer to getting my hands on what it's like to be a nurse, and I'm ready for whatever I face. In the Oncology department, I know it's emotionally draining as well; staying strong for the patients who are fighting for their lives is difficult to watch. But I know I'm called to be a nurse because I know I want to do that. I want to be able to bring joy and strength to the patient's lives and fight alongside them. This internship will give me the experience of a lifetime that will help me pursue my dream of being a nurse, learn how to use equipment, take samples to laboratories, and interact with patients. As of now, I want to be a nurse. I want to bring healing emotionally, physically, and mentally to any patient I have and inspire them to keep looking forward and never doubt themselves.
Holt Scholarship
I want to study and learn about entrepreneurship. After researching extensively on how to put an end to unauthorized mica mines in Madagascar and India, I hope to start my non-profit organization to end this child labor exploitation. My goal in studying entrepreneurship is to not only end child labor in these mines but to find alternative jobs for the thousands of families who are forced to work in these dangerous conditions and provide them with an education in living a more sustainable life. Mica mining is frequently the only activity that enables families to put food on the table and survive in areas with high rates of poverty. Children frequently need to make extra money for their parents because so many households struggle to make ends meet. There are considerable risks involved with mica mining because it is unregulated and, for the most part, thrives in secrecy. Children must fill a full basket with mica flakes to be paid. They frequently have to spend the entire day in the mine to accomplish that, depriving themselves of the opportunity to attend class. Children who spend their childhoods working as miners of mica are ensnared in a never-ending cycle of cruelty and suffering, which also reduces their employment prospects in the future. Some end-users choose to completely stop using items that contain mica because they are aware of how exploitative the mica supply chain may be, while others switch to synthetic mica. Theoretically, if the demand for mica declines, fewer kids will be employed in its mining, making it appear like a viable alternative. However, in reality, the manufacture of synthetic mica frequently lacks transparency, making it impossible to claim that this option is completely free of child labor. Furthermore, if we stopped utilizing mica products altogether, many families would lose their only source of income. Without mica, entire populations would be pushed into abject poverty in Madagascar and India. Finding a solution to the apparent moral conundrum of whether or not to use mica is difficult. Simply avoiding mica-containing products won't solve the problem. Instead, it's crucial to educate children and their parents about the value of education and to give them the professional training and skills necessary to find employment elsewhere. That will lessen their reliance on illegal mica mining, allowing Indian and Malagasy children to have joyful childhoods free from abusive work. But I can only overcome this obstacle and help these families by pursuing entrepreneurship. By placing Christ at the core of my major, I hope to improve my areas of weakness and build upon my areas of strength using my knowledge, tools, and experience from my education about non-profit organizations.
Femi Chebaís Scholarship
My dream goal in life is to build my own organization protecting children from child labor and being forced into mining an ingredient called mica in illegal mines. These mines are located in India and Madagascar hiding more than 20,000 children in mines and putting families into extreme poverty. Once I major in entrepreneurship, I want to fight against child labor in our world and educate families to pursue a healthier understanding of employment.
