Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. Living with mental health challenges such as depression, anxiety, and the aftermath of trauma has given me a unique perspective on life’s struggles, resilience, and the importance of empathy. These experiences have not only influenced how I navigate my personal journey but also how I envision my role in the world and the impact I want to make. My goals are deeply rooted in the lessons I’ve learned from managing my mental health. I aspire to become someone who not only succeeds professionally but also advocates for mental health awareness and access to resources. My own struggles have shown me the importance of support systems and the gaps that exist for people in need. This has inspired me to consider how my career can address those needs, whether it’s through direct advocacy, creating solutions for marginalized communities, or simply fostering understanding in the workplace. These goals stem from personal moments of clarity during my darkest times. When depression made it difficult to see a future, the smallest victories—like getting out of bed or completing a task—became monumental. Overcoming those moments taught me the value of setting achievable goals, not just for myself but for others who may face similar struggles. It’s not enough for me to succeed; I want to ensure my success has a ripple effect, inspiring and uplifting others who may feel trapped by their circumstances. My relationships have also been shaped by my experiences with mental health. Initially, these challenges made it difficult to trust others and open up. Anxiety often told me that my struggles would burden those around me, while depression convinced me I was unworthy of support. This isolation only deepened the difficulties I faced. Over time, however, I learned that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness. Opening up to friends, family, and mental health professionals taught me the value of connection and understanding. Now, I approach my relationships with greater empathy and patience. I’ve come to realize that everyone is fighting their own battles, often invisible to the outside world. My experiences have made me more compassionate, encouraging me to listen actively and be a source of support for those around me. At the same time, I’ve learned to set boundaries and prioritize self-care, recognizing that healthy relationships require balance and mutual respect. On a broader level, my mental health journey has fundamentally altered how I understand the world. I see the stigma surrounding mental illness not as an individual failing, but as a systemic issue that requires collective action. This perspective has motivated me to advocate for change, whether it’s through sharing my story, supporting initiatives that promote mental health education, or simply challenging harmful stereotypes in everyday conversations. Experiencing mental health challenges has also taught me the importance of gratitude and resilience. When you’ve been to the depths of despair, even small joys take on greater significance. This outlook has helped me appreciate life’s beauty, even in the midst of hardship. It’s a perspective I carry with me in everything I do, whether it’s pursuing my education, building relationships, or working toward my goals. Additionally, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the intersection of mental health with other social issues, such as economic inequality, access to healthcare, and systemic discrimination. These intersections have broadened my worldview, highlighting the importance of addressing mental health as part of a larger effort to create a more equitable society. I want to be a part of that change, whether through direct action or by inspiring others to challenge the status quo. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have shaped every aspect of who I am today. They’ve taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of both personal and collective growth. My goals are driven by a desire to create positive change, my relationships are grounded in empathy and understanding, and my worldview is informed by a recognition of the systemic challenges that impact us all. While mental health challenges are an ongoing part of my life, they have also been a source of strength and insight, guiding me toward a future where I can make a meaningful difference.
    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
Anxiety has been a constant presence in my life, affecting me in ways both small and profound. Even on days when everything seems to be going well, a gnawing sense of dread can creep in, whispering that something terrible might happen. It’s as if my mind is always searching for a reason to be on edge, cycling through endless “what-ifs” and unlikely scenarios. Overthinking becomes my default mode, and I often find myself questioning every choice, every word, and every action as though I’m trying to prevent an unseen disaster. This persistent anxiety makes daily life feel more complex than it should be. Simple decisions, like what to wear or how to word an email, can spiral into a web of second-guessing. Social situations can feel like minefields, where I replay conversations in my head long after they’ve ended, worrying about whether I said the wrong thing or misread someone’s tone. Even moments of joy and accomplishment are often clouded by an underlying fear that the good times won’t last, or that something will go wrong to disrupt them. Despite the challenges, my experience with anxiety has taught me a lot about resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of self-care. I’ve learned to recognize the triggers that fuel my anxiety and to develop strategies for managing it. Journaling helps me untangle the thoughts swirling in my mind, while mindfulness exercises ground me in the present moment. I’ve also sought professional help, and therapy has been instrumental in teaching me how to challenge irrational thoughts and approach life with a more balanced perspective. Pursuing a college degree is important to me because it represents a step toward building the future I envision for myself, despite the obstacles anxiety has placed in my path. Education is not just a tool for career advancement—it’s a way for me to prove to myself that I am capable of growth, even in the face of fear and doubt. It’s a chance to expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and open doors to opportunities that will allow me to make a meaningful impact in my chosen field. Earning a degree also feels like reclaiming control over my life. Anxiety often makes me feel powerless, as though I’m at the mercy of my thoughts and fears. But through education, I am actively choosing to invest in myself and my future. It’s a tangible way of saying, “I refuse to let anxiety dictate my path.” In addition to the personal significance of achieving this goal, I hope to use my education to contribute to the world in a way that matters. Whether it’s through innovation, advocacy, or simply being a compassionate and understanding presence for others, I want my work to reflect the lessons I’ve learned from living with anxiety: the value of perseverance, the importance of empathy, and the belief that even the most daunting challenges can be overcome with determination and support. Anxiety may be a part of my story, but it doesn’t define me. Pursuing a college degree is my way of writing the next chapter—one filled with hope, purpose, and possibility.

Mental health struggles have profoundly shaped who I am today, and the experience of grappling with suicidal ideation has been one of the most defining challenges of my life. These moments have taught me the importance of resilience, seeking help, and finding purpose, even in the darkest of times. For much of my life, I struggled with depression and anxiety, often feeling isolated and weighed down by an invisible burden. On the surface, everything might have seemed fine, but internally, I was caught in a storm of self-doubt, hopelessness, and fatigue. The weight of these feelings became so overwhelming that, at times, I questioned whether life was worth continuing. Suicidal ideation is an experience that’s difficult to describe unless you’ve been through it yourself. It feels like a constant negotiation between the part of you that wants to give up and the part that clings to hope. For me, the isolation of these thoughts was compounded by stigma. I didn’t feel like I could talk openly about what I was going through, and this silence only deepened my despair. Eventually, I reached a breaking point where I realized I couldn’t continue without support. That moment of acknowledgment was one of the hardest but most important decisions I’ve ever made. I sought therapy and began the slow process of understanding the root causes of my pain. Over time, I started to unpack years of suppressed emotions, childhood trauma, and societal pressures that had built up inside me. While the road to recovery hasn’t been linear, each step has brought me closer to a more stable and hopeful place. I’ve learned coping mechanisms like mindfulness, journaling, and setting healthy boundaries. I’ve also leaned on my creative outlets, such as writing and art, as ways to process my feelings and express myself. Through this journey, I’ve become passionate about advocating for mental health awareness and destigmatizing conversations around suicide. I believe that open dialogue is critical for breaking the cycle of silence and shame that prevents so many people from seeking help. I’ve shared my story with friends, in community groups, and through writing, hoping that my vulnerability can encourage others to do the same. Experiencing suicidal ideation has also given me a greater sense of empathy and a desire to help others who are struggling. I’ve become an active listener for those in my life, ensuring they feel seen and supported. I’ve volunteered with organizations focused on mental health and suicide prevention, and I aspire to do more in this area as I continue to heal and grow. In many ways, the experience of facing my mental health challenges head-on has given me a renewed sense of purpose. I’ve learned that life, even with its struggles, is worth fighting for, and I want to dedicate my time and energy to making that fight easier for others. Whether through direct support, advocacy, or simply being a voice of compassion, I’m committed to helping build a world where mental health is treated with the care and seriousness it deserves.
    Charles B. Brazelton Memorial Scholarship
As a child, I was captivated by the stars. I wanted to be an astrophysicist, someone who could unravel the mysteries of the universe and explore the vast unknown. The idea of studying black holes, galaxies, and the very origins of existence fueled my curiosity. I spent countless nights looking up at the sky, imagining what it would be like to contribute to our understanding of the cosmos. While my career path has since evolved, the same sense of wonder and desire to explore the unknown still drives me. Today, I am pursuing a path in materials engineering, where I can study the fundamental building blocks of matter and push the boundaries of innovation. In many ways, this career connects to my childhood dream: it allows me to explore the universe, albeit on a smaller, more tangible scale. Instead of focusing on the stars, I now focus on the atoms and molecules that make up everything we see. Despite this shift in focus, my journey has been far from linear or without obstacles. In recent years, I have been surrounded by gun violence, a harsh reality that has deeply impacted my perspective on life. A stray bullet once hit my house, a chilling reminder of how fragile safety can be, even in what should be a sanctuary. Experiences like this have shaped how I view my role in the world and the importance of creating a meaningful impact. The constant threat of violence has made it difficult to trust others and feel comfortable in public spaces, or even in my own home. For a time, I struggled to maintain focus on my goals. It’s hard to think about the future when you’re consumed by fear in the present. But these experiences have also given me a sense of urgency and purpose. They’ve taught me the importance of resilience and the power of education as a means to rise above adversity. In materials engineering, I see an opportunity to make a real difference in the world. Whether it’s developing stronger, more sustainable materials for infrastructure in vulnerable communities or working on innovations that can improve safety and security, I want to channel my knowledge into solutions that help people. My childhood dreams of exploring the universe haven’t disappeared; they’ve transformed into a desire to use science and engineering to address the challenges we face here on Earth. These experiences have also taught me to value every opportunity for growth and discovery. They’ve reinforced my belief in the power of education—not just as a tool for personal advancement, but as a way to create a better world for others. While my career path has shifted, the core of who I am remains the same: a person driven by curiosity, resilience, and the desire to contribute to something greater than myself. I may no longer be pursuing a career as an astrophysicist, but the same spirit of exploration continues to guide me. Through materials engineering, I hope to create a legacy that reflects both the dreams of my childhood and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

    Michael Valdivia Scholarship
My name is Mharion, and my journey has been defined by resilience in the face of mental health struggles, personal loss, and the challenges of living in an environment shaped by violence. Depression and severe anxiety have been constant companions in my life, shaping how I perceive the world and interact with it. For a long time, these struggles seemed insurmountable, but I have worked hard to overcome them and am now ready to pursue my passions through education. Depression has cast a long shadow over my life. It took away my sense of hope and purpose, leaving me feeling isolated and disconnected. At its worst, it robbed me of the motivation to care for myself or pursue my dreams. Compounding this was the severe anxiety I experienced due to the gun violence in my community. The sound of gunfire was not uncommon, and it became difficult to trust others or feel safe, even in my own home. I avoided public spaces, always on edge and hypervigilant, which only deepened my isolation and made it harder to seek help. In my darkest moments, I turned to drugs as a means of coping. At first, it seemed like an escape from the overwhelming sadness and fear, but addiction quickly became another hurdle to overcome. I lost sight of who I was and what I wanted for my life. The path I was on was destructive, and it took hitting rock bottom to realize that I needed to change. Seeking professional help and support from those who cared about me was the turning point. It was not an easy journey, but it was one that taught me the value of perseverance and the strength within myself to overcome adversity. One of the biggest hurdles I faced was rebuilding my trust in people and the world around me. Living in constant fear and battling addiction left me feeling like I was fighting alone. Through therapy, I learned to confront my fears and reframe my perspective. I also discovered the importance of community and connection. Volunteering at a no-kill animal shelter became a source of healing for me. It gave me a purpose and reminded me of the good that exists in the world. Today, I am in a much better place, both mentally and physically. While I still face challenges, I am no longer defined by my struggles. Instead, I am defined by my determination to rise above them and pursue my dreams. Education has always been a goal of mine, and now, more than ever, I see it as a path to a brighter future. Through education or trade school, I aim to channel my experiences into something meaningful. Whether it is through advocating for mental health awareness, creating opportunities for others, or simply proving to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals, I am committed to making a positive impact. This journey is not just about overcoming the past; it is about building a future I can be proud of.

    Black Leaders Scholarship
Black History Month serves as a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Black leaders who have fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and freedom. Two such figures who have profoundly inspired me are Malcolm X and Fred Hampton. Their lives and legacies not only highlight the resilience of Black leadership but also expose the lengths to which oppressive systems have gone to silence them. Both men stood firm in their convictions, advocating for the rights and dignity of Black people in the face of systemic injustice. Yet, their untimely deaths—clearly orchestrated by the government—remain a grim reminder of how the fight for freedom can make leaders targets of violent suppression. Malcolm X was a fearless advocate for Black empowerment, independence, and self-determination. His journey of transformation, from a young man caught in the cycle of systemic oppression to a global voice for human rights, is nothing short of extraordinary. What inspires me most about Malcolm X is his unyielding pursuit of truth. He wasn’t afraid to evolve in his beliefs, even when it meant challenging the very ideologies he once held. His ability to adapt, learn, and grow while remaining steadfast in his mission to uplift Black people is a lesson in courage and humility. Fred Hampton, on the other hand, represents the power of youth and community. At just 21 years old, he was already a chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, a leader who united people across racial and socioeconomic lines. His vision of solidarity, embodied in the Rainbow Coalition, was revolutionary. Hampton’s charisma and commitment to providing tangible resources—like free breakfast programs for children and health clinics—demonstrated how activism could be both compassionate and impactful. He wasn’t just fighting for rights; he was building a better future. Both Malcolm X and Fred Hampton were murdered in ways that exposed the government’s role in targeting Black leaders. Malcolm X was gunned down while speaking to an audience, vulnerable in a moment meant to inspire and educate. Fred Hampton was assassinated in his sleep during a raid orchestrated by the FBI and Chicago police. The lack of accountability for these heinous acts reflects the broader societal indifference to Black lives and leadership during that era—and even now. What stands out to me is how these men were silenced not because they posed a physical threat, but because they represented hope and change. Their ideas—self-determination, unity, and community empowerment—were so powerful that the systems built to maintain inequality felt threatened. The loss of these leaders, especially in such vulnerable positions, underscores the danger of challenging oppressive structures. Yet, their legacies endure. Malcolm X’s words continue to inspire movements for justice, and Fred Hampton’s vision of solidarity remains a blueprint for effective activism. As a young Black person, I draw strength from their courage. They remind me that standing up for what is right requires sacrifice, and even in the face of overwhelming opposition, change is possible. Their stories fuel my own desire to create a better world. I carry the lessons of Malcolm X and Fred Hampton with me. Their lives teach us that while the fight for justice is not easy, it is necessary—and that the impact of true leadership cannot be silenced, even by violence. Black History Month is a time to honor those who paved the way and to recommit to the struggles they championed. Malcolm X and Fred Hampton may have been taken from us, but their legacies live on, reminding us all to keep fighting for a future where equality and justice prevail.
Jennifer and Rob Tower Memorial Scholarship
Kindness is not just a momentary action; it’s a way of engaging with the world that has the power to transform lives, including our own. One of the most meaningful patterns of kindness I have embraced in my life is sitting down to converse with the homeless in my community and providing them with resources I could gather. These interactions have not only impacted the lives of those I’ve helped but have also shaped my perspective on compassion, humanity, and my role in creating a better world. It began as a small gesture. During my walks around the city, I noticed how often people avoided eye contact with those who were homeless, walking past them as though they were invisible. Something about this indifference didn’t sit right with me. These individuals had stories, struggles, and dreams just like anyone else, yet they were often reduced to their circumstances. I decided to do what I could: sit, talk, and listen. Over time, these conversations became a regular practice. One of the individuals I grew closest to was a man named Anthony. He was someone I saw regularly, and we’d often spend time talking about my goals and aspirations. He encouraged me in a way I hadn’t expected, reminding me of the importance of staying on track and working hard to avoid ending up in a situation like his. His words became a source of accountability for me, as I saw the realities of what could happen without consistent effort and determination. Another time, I met a man who needed help getting around town. He had come to the area to visit his daughter and grandchildren but had fallen into homelessness during his stay. He shared with me how he had lost two of his toes to the cold weather, a stark reminder of the harsh conditions many face without proper shelter. I drove him around to run errands and eventually helped him return home. While I offered him practical support, his story stuck with me as a profound example of how quickly life’s circumstances can change. These moments taught me that kindness isn’t just about the material resources we can provide but also about the dignity and humanity we extend through genuine connection. Many of the people I’ve met emphasized how meaningful it was to have someone simply listen to them, treating them as individuals rather than statistics or problems to solve. The positive impact of these acts of kindness was tangible. Anthony’s encouragement helped me stay focused on my own goals, while the man I drove around was able to reconnect with his family. These small but meaningful acts reinforced my belief that even minor efforts can have significant effects, both for the people we help and for ourselves. These experiences also had a ripple effect in my community. When friends learned about what I was doing, many wanted to contribute, donating clothes, food, and other resources. Some even joined me in these efforts, creating a small network of people dedicated to helping others. Together, we were able to amplify the impact of what had started as a personal practice. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that kindness is not about grand gestures but about showing up consistently and authentically. It’s about meeting people where they are, without judgment, and recognizing their inherent worth. This practice has also taught me resilience and humility. I’ve seen how resourceful and strong people can be even in the face of unimaginable hardship, and it’s reminded me to appreciate the privileges I often take for granted. These acts of kindness have also shaped my future aspirations. I’m passionate about pursuing a career that allows me to address systemic issues like homelessness and poverty on a larger scale. Whether through urban planning, community outreach, or public policy, I want to create sustainable solutions that empower people to overcome the challenges they face. In the end, kindness is a two-way street. While I’ve positively impacted others through my actions, I’ve also gained so much in return—a deeper sense of empathy, a broader understanding of societal issues, and a clearer sense of purpose. These experiences have reinforced my belief that small acts of kindness, when multiplied, can create meaningful change. Kindness may not solve all the world’s problems, but it is a powerful starting point. By choosing to see people for who they are, not just their circumstances, and by offering help in whatever way we can, we contribute to a world where dignity and compassion take precedence. For me, that’s a vision worth striving for every day.

I am endlessly inspired by the resilience of the human spirit and its ability to find light even in darkness. One of the concepts I hope to champion is sustainability through scientific advancement. The same knowledge that reveals the inner workings of an atom can help address some of our most pressing challenges, like climate change, energy shortages, and environmental degradation. By better understanding the universe, we can find ways to harmonize our existence with the natural laws that govern it. This isn’t just about solving problems for today but building a foundation for generations to come—a world where science and nature coexist rather than conflict. Another area that fascinates me is the interplay between science and philosophy. The more we uncover about the universe, the more questions arise about meaning and purpose. What is our role in this grand cosmic symphony? How can we use our knowledge ethically and compassionately? I believe science and philosophy must work hand in hand, guiding us not only toward technological progress but also toward a deeper understanding of ourselves and our responsibilities. Ultimately, the importance of understanding the universe lies in its power to unite us. The cosmos belongs to no one yet touches everyone. Its mysteries remind us that we are all part of something far greater than ourselves. Whether peering into the depths of a black hole or mapping the quantum fabric of reality, these discoveries inspire awe and a sense of shared destiny. I hope to leave a legacy not only of scientific contribution but also of accessibility. Knowledge should not be confined to elite circles—it should be shared, celebrated, and used to uplift humanity as a whole. I dream of making complex ideas understandable and inspiring the next generation of curious minds, just as I have been inspired by those who came before me. To better understand the universe is to better understand ourselves—our origins, our potential, and our place in the grand scheme of things. It’s about asking the biggest questions and refusing to settle for incomplete answers. It’s about recognizing that every discovery, no matter how small, brings us closer to the truth. This pursuit is my passion and my purpose. I am committed to dedicating my life to this quest, not only to satisfy my curiosity but to leave the world better, brighter, and more connected than I found it.

From "Meditations" by Marcus Aurelius. "At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work—as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for—the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?" In the selected passage from Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations, the Stoic philosopher urges us to confront our natural resistance to action by reminding ourselves of the greater purpose of human existence. Aurelius uses the mundane example of reluctance to leave the comfort of bed at dawn as a metaphor for the broader human tendency to choose ease over responsibility. Through this reflection, he invites the reader to reconsider what it means to live a purposeful life, one centered on fulfilling the inherent duties of being human. At its core, this passage explores the tension between indulgence in immediate comfort and the pursuit of virtuous action, urging a shift in perspective from transient desires to enduring purpose. Aurelius begins with a call to remind oneself of one’s identity and role: “I have to go to work—as a human being.” Here, he sets a deliberate tone of duty and purpose, framing work not as a burdensome obligation but as the natural outcome of being human. For the Stoics, the essence of human existence lies in rationality and virtue, attributes that distinguish humanity from other creatures. Aurelius uses this framing to highlight that avoiding action is a denial of one’s nature. Work, in this context, extends beyond mundane labor; it encompasses the cultivation of reason, the practice of virtue, and the contribution to society. Through this lens, Aurelius transforms the act of rising from bed into a symbolic triumph of purpose over complacency. The central rhetorical question, “Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?” captures the heart of Aurelius’ argument. The contrast between huddling under blankets and embracing one’s duties reflects a broader conflict between base desires and higher aspirations. Warmth and comfort, while appealing, are fleeting and ultimately unfulfilling when compared to the deeper satisfaction derived from virtuous action. In Stoic thought, such indulgences distract individuals from their true purpose, leading to stagnation rather than growth. Aurelius’ choice of the word “created” emphasizes the intentionality behind human existence. To live authentically is to align one’s actions with this intended purpose, rejecting complacency in favor of meaningful engagement with life’s responsibilities. This passage also reflects a Stoic approach to framing challenges as opportunities for self-improvement. The difficulty of rising at dawn mirrors the broader struggles of life, such as resisting temptation, confronting adversity, and persevering through discomfort. Aurelius encourages the reader to view these struggles not as burdens but as tests of character. By acting in accordance with one’s higher purpose despite resistance, one cultivates resilience and self-discipline—qualities that enable greater fulfillment and effectiveness. This perspective reframes discomfort as irrelevant when weighed against the profound satisfaction of living in harmony with one’s nature. Moreover, Aurelius’ reflections point to the interconnection between individual purpose and collective good. To fulfill one’s duty as a human being is not merely a personal endeavor but a contribution to the greater harmony of the world. In Stoic cosmology, humanity is part of a larger rational order, and each person’s actions ripple outward to affect the whole. Thus, rising from bed to perform one’s work is not only an act of self-fulfillment but also an expression of responsibility to society. This perspective fosters a sense of accountability, emphasizing that neglecting one’s duties diminishes not only the individual but the collective as well. Aurelius’ teachings retain profound relevance in the modern era. In a world increasingly dominated by convenience and distraction, the temptation to prioritize short-term comfort over long-term purpose is ever-present. His reminder to embrace work as a fundamental aspect of being human challenges contemporary attitudes that often equate fulfillment with ease. Whether it is the reluctance to pursue a demanding career, the avoidance of difficult conversations, or the hesitation to engage in civic responsibilities, the principles expressed in this passage serve as a timeless call to action. The passage also encourages self-reflection on the nature of purpose. In today’s society, where identity is frequently tied to material success or external validation, Aurelius’ insistence on aligning with one’s innate human purpose is particularly significant. He reminds us that true fulfillment arises not from external achievements but from living in accordance with our values and responsibilities. By embracing this perspective, individuals can resist the pull of distractions and instead pursue a life of greater depth and meaning. In conclusion, Marcus Aurelius’ meditation on rising at dawn serves as a powerful metaphor for the human struggle between comfort and purpose. Through this reflection, he underscores the importance of aligning one’s actions with the essence of being human: reason, virtue, and contribution to the common good. By rejecting complacency and embracing responsibility, we not only fulfill our potential but also contribute meaningfully to the broader fabric of society. Aurelius’ words challenge us to rise—not just from bed, but from the inertia that holds us back from living authentically and purposefully. In doing so, he provides a timeless guide for navigating life’s challenges with courage and intention.

Legacy, to me, is the sum of what we leave behind—our impact on others, the world, and the lasting influence of our choices and actions. It is the story written by how we lived and the changes we inspired in the lives of others, both during our time and beyond it. Legacy isn't just about accomplishments; it's about the principles we stand for and the difference we make in the lives of those around us. Reflecting on my upbringing, I see a legacy shaped by both positive lessons and challenges. My parents' legacy, however, feels deeply tainted by their refusal to grow, take responsibility, or seek self-improvement during the time I was under their roof. Their unwillingness to confront their faults or acknowledge the impact of their actions has created a cycle of dysfunction that I am determined to break. Their choices showed me firsthand the harm of stagnation, and their insistence on avoiding accountability taught me the importance of embracing self-reflection and growth. This upbringing profoundly shaped my path in life. While it could have left me stuck in resentment or repeating their mistakes, it has instead fueled my desire to create a legacy rooted in responsibility, compassion, and positive change. I’ve learned that breaking the cycle means intentionally choosing to live differently, committing to continuous self-improvement, and striving to leave the world better than I found it. This commitment to growth extends beyond myself—I want to model the importance of accountability and change for others, proving that transformation is possible. Legacy, in the end, is about creating something greater than ourselves. By taking ownership of my path and making intentional, meaningful choices, I hope to leave behind a story of resilience, progress, and hope. My upbringing may have shaped my perspective, but my determination ensures that my legacy will be one of purpose, growth, and empowerment for future generations.

Hearts on Sleeves, Minds in College Scholarship
Growing up, I never thought much about where my food came from until one day, I found myself imagining the young lives behind the meals on my plate. I thought of the animal kids—calves, piglets, and chicks—and how they were separated from their parents. That realization changed my perspective entirely. It was then that I decided to embrace veganism, not just as a dietary choice but as a lifestyle rooted in compassion and justice. This journey hasn’t been without its challenges, but it has deeply shaped my daily life and my understanding of interconnected social issues, particularly environmental sustainability. One of the most immediate challenges I’ve faced as a vegan is the lack of readily available, affordable, and appetizing vegan food options. It often feels like meat dominates the menu everywhere I go. This scarcity has not only encouraged me to become more resourceful in the kitchen, preparing meals from scratch, but it has also deepened my awareness of how food systems are designed in ways that prioritize convenience over sustainability. In a world where so much of our agricultural output is funneled into animal agriculture, I am reminded daily of the environmental issues that this system exacerbates—deforestation, water shortages, and greenhouse gas emissions. For me, choosing veganism is not just about sparing animal lives but also about reducing my environmental footprint and advocating for a more sustainable planet. My passion for animal rights and environmental justice converges with my volunteer work at a local animal shelter. There, I’ve seen firsthand the resilience and trust of animals, even after enduring neglect or abuse. This work fuels my dedication to creating a world where animals are valued as individuals with lives worth protecting. Volunteering has also taught me about the power of community—how collective effort can transform individual lives and inspire broader societal change. Through veganism, I’ve learned to live with intention and to question the systems that perpetuate harm, whether to animals, the planet, or marginalized communities. Every meal I prepare or share is an opportunity to demonstrate that a kinder, more sustainable way of life is possible. It’s a form of advocacy that starts with my plate but extends to my conversations, actions, and aspirations for the future. This journey has also highlighted areas for personal growth. Veganism has taught me patience when explaining my choices to others and resilience when navigating a world that often feels indifferent to the causes I care about. It has shown me that meaningful change is often slow but always worth pursuing. Looking forward, I aim to integrate my commitment to veganism and environmental justice into every aspect of my life, from my career to my community involvement. I hope to inspire others to see the connections between their choices and the world they want to build—a world that values compassion, sustainability, and justice for all.

    Learner Calculus Scholarship
Skipping my lunch period in high school to take AP Calculus wasn't the typical choice for a senior, but for me, it was the gateway to understanding the language of the universe. Sitting in Mr. Fantozzi's classroom, I wasn't just learning mathematical concepts; I was uncovering tools that would allow me to explore the complexities of the natural world and beyond—with admittedly a few Z's here and there, and I'm not talking about the variables. Calculus—like most math at the beginning—initially seemed like an impossible enigma. However, as we journeyed through its foundational postulates and applications, it transformed into an epic adventure! The moment when a challenging problem unfolds into a solution brings a sense of accomplishment unlike any other. This analytical journey chiseled my problem-solving skills, teaching me to approach obstacles with both logic and creativity. I vividly recall applying calculus to maximize the space in my room. By modeling my room's dimensions and furniture placement using optimization techniques, I found the most efficient layout to create more living space. More profoundly, during a period of homelessness, I utilized calculus principles to optimize my gas usage, considering variables like driving speed, external temperature, and average mileage. These real-world applications reinforced my belief in calculus as an irreplaceable tool in life. Calculus is the bedrock on which advanced STEM fields are built—fields that are becoming increasingly vital as technology advances. It's one of the most factual ways to represent anything quantifiable, impacting sectors like business, technology, and health (kind of like how coffee impacts college students—essential and often underestimated!). For me, as an aspiring atomic and nuclear physicist, calculus is not just a subject—it's the key to unlocking the mysteries of matter and energy manipulation. It allows scientists to model phenomena invisible to the unaided eye, from the behavior of subatomic particles to the vast mechanics of celestial bodies like our very own Sun. My passion as a naturalist is deeply intertwined with calculus. It provides a framework to understand and predict natural patterns, echoing Neil deGrasse Tyson's sentiment that math is the language of the universe. Calculus doesn't just solve equations; it tells stories of how the world works, bridging the gap between abstract concepts and tangible reality. Looking ahead, I plan to delve into projects that explore the history and deeper insights of calculus, shedding light on its evolution and its pivotal role in scientific advancements. I am excited to contribute to fields that rely on this profound mathematical discipline, confident that calculus will continue to be the "F" that moves "m" by "a" in innovation and discovery. Calculus is more than a subject I chose over eating lunch; it's the catalyst that fuels my curiosity and ambition in STEM. It has shaped my analytical thinking and equipped me with the skills to tackle complex challenges. As I continue my academic journey, I am eager to harness the power of calculus to make meaningful contributions to the world of science and beyond.
