Hello! I'm Melanie Douglas-Gonzalez. I am a rising senior at SUNY Purchase College pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design. I am an artist and designer passionate about feminism and highlighting black voices. My career ambition is to be a web and branding designer helping emerging black-owned businesses. At my university I am involved in the Student Government Association Executive Board as the Coordinator of Public Affairs, supporting my fellow student body by acting as a bridge between student body needs, and administrative solutions. I am also actively involved in Rough Seconds: SUNY Purchase's Animation Club, and LGBTQU, the first & largest LGBTQ+ student union in New York State. WinnerIn an industry where only 3% of designers are black (reported in an AIGA Census Report), I am propelled by the profound impact I can make as a black woman in design, challenging the status quo and amplifying underrepresented voices. As a black woman, it is my motivation to enter the field of design, where I can challenge norms, reshape narratives, and create a more inclusive creative landscape.
As a designer, I understand the importance of challenging these norms and using design to redefine social opinion. Through my work, I want to explore the boundaries of design and technology and shed light on global issues. As a queer person, a black person, and a woman, I want to create accessible works that highlight the experiences of marginalized communities, with the ultimate goal of fostering a more inclusive world. I strive to make a positive impact by pushing the boundaries of design, leveraging technology, and acting as a visual voice for marginalized communities.
Motivated by my personal experiences as a queer person, a black person, and a woman, I aspire to contribute to my field by creating accessible works that highlight the experiences of marginalized communities. Through design, I aim to shed light on global issues and foster a more inclusive world where everyone's story is heard and celebrated. I bring a distinct voice and lived experiences that contribute to the diversity and richness of creative discourse.
Receiving a scholarship would provide the support and resources needed to explore new artistic horizons and leverage technology to create impactful pieces. With this scholarship, I can act as a visual voice for those whose stories are often overlooked, challenging the status quo and promoting inclusivity in the creative industry.

In an industry where only 3% of designers are black (reported in an AIGA Cenus Report), I am propelled by the profound impact I can make as a black woman in design, challenging the status quo and amplifying underrepresented voices. As a black woman, it is my motivation to enter the field of design, where I can challenge norms, reshape narratives, and create a more inclusive creative landscape.
Graphic design's power to shape societal opinions captivates me. It can redefine the "right way" to exist and challenge the visual language that perpetuates stereotypes and marginalization. I aim to break down barriers and use design as a platform to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities. Studying the history of Graphic Design opened my eyes to the lack of representation of people of color in media during the 1930s. It further perpetuated negative stereotypes and views towards black individuals. I realized that visual language plays a significant role in shaping societal norms and attitudes. Similarly, advertising has been instrumental in creating unrealistic beauty standards for women.

Johnson Dale Women's Empowerment Scholarship
My volunteer experiences have allowed me the privilege to witness the transformative power of art, literature, and collective action. As a visual artist, I stand at the intersection of compassion, empathy, and design. Design is a language that transcends borders, communicates ideas, and shapes the world around us. But what happens when only a fraction of voices are heard? The shocking statistic that only 3% of designers are black, as reported in the 2019 AIGA Design Census, awakened a fire within me. It ignited a transformative journey, one driven by a passion for representation in the field of design and the urgent need for diversity and inclusivity. Hi, my name is Melanie and my mission is creating a better, more inclusive world for my community through arts and design.
Throughout high school, I dedicated my time and energy to various volunteer initiatives that allowed me to make a positive impact on the lives of others. One of my most meaningful experiences was at the Pelham Arts Center, where I supported the teaching of their youth arts programs. There I witnessed firsthand the transformative power of art and its ability to inspire creativity, build confidence, and foster personal growth in young individuals. By volunteering, I had the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant artistic community and nurture the talents of aspiring artists. Along with volunteering at local elementary schools book fairs to inspire the younger generations to submerge themselves in the joy of literature, another incredible experience I had was supporting the Foundation Fighting Blindness, an organization committed to finding treatments and cures for retinal degenerative diseases. Through my involvement in their fundraisers, I witnessed the resilience and strength of individuals living with visual impairments. It deepened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to making a difference in the lives of those facing unique challenges. I learned firsthand the importance of compassion, understanding, and the transformative power of collective action.
These volunteer experiences have shaped me into the person I am today—an individual deeply committed to giving back to my community and making a lasting impact on the world. They have instilled in me a sense of compassion, empathy, and a desire to serve others. I strongly believe that the power of design and visual arts can be harnessed to create positive change and amplify the voices of marginalized communities.
I aim to use my skills as a designer to challenge societal norms and redefine social opinion. By creating visually engaging and inclusive works, I want to amplify the voices of marginalized communities. Through my designs, I strive to foster a greater sense of understanding, empathy, and appreciation for diverse perspectives. I am also committed to addressing global issues through design. Whether it's raising awareness about environmental sustainability, promoting social justice, or advocating for mental health, I aim to tackle pressing challenges through my artistic creations. By employing visual communication as a tool for education and empowerment, I aspire to inspire positive change and encourage others to take action. My immediate goal after graduation is to use my artistic skills to support non-profit organizations and social initiatives. I aim to contribute to community-driven projects that uplift and empower people and communities. Design for social change is the career path I strive for.
I am incredibly grateful for the chance to be considered for the Harry & Mary Sheaffer Scholarship. This scholarship would not only enable me to complete the final year of my art education but also propel me closer to achieving my dreams of creating a meaningful impact in my community and the world through visual arts and design.
