Bio

Greetings! I'm Mehak Wadhwa, an enthusiastic advocate for social justice and equality, particularly for marginalized communities. As a first-generation immigrant from India pursuing my studies at Fordham University, I'm deeply committed to fostering an inclusive society. At school, I'm honored to serve as the co-president of the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA), where we work tirelessly to create a safe and welcoming space for individuals across the LGBTQ+ spectrum. I am also a member of the Physics society and Rocket Propulsion Club. Beyond academics, I dedicate myself to community service. Volunteering at the Queens Borough Public Library and the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society has allowed me to contribute to the community by supporting food distribution initiatives and tutoring young children in English and biology. Furthermore, my internship at Max Super Specialty Hospital provided invaluable experiences in patient care and medical discussions, enhancing my understanding of healthcare systems. In my leisure time, find joy in various activities, including weightlifting, badminton, and indulging in my love for reading. Creativity is an essential part of my life, whether it's through crocheting, sewing, painting, or engaging in video games. Language learning is a passion; I'm proficient in seven languages and currently delving into Korean, which has empowered me to engage meaningfully with diverse communities both locally and during my volunteer work in hospitals in India. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship opportunity.

Innovators of Color in STEM Scholarship
As a woman in STEM, my decision to pursue physics engineering and biomedical engineering is fueled by my unwavering desire to make a positive impact on the world. I am driven by a strong sense of responsibility to improve society, and I see engineering as the perfect avenue to achieve this goal. Despite being aware of the prevailing gender and racial disparities in these fields, I am resolute in my determination to be a catalyst for change and to promote greater diversity and inclusion. I am passionate about inspiring young children who may have been discouraged from pursuing engineering due to societal biases, and I want to show them that their dreams are valid and achievable. One area of research that truly captivates me is the utilization of stem cells to regenerate specialized tissue cells. This groundbreaking technique has the potential to revolutionize the field of organ transplantation by offering an alternative to the lengthy wait for suitable organ donors. By focusing my efforts on the development of innovative methods that successfully reconstruct and enhance vital organs such as the heart and liver, I hope to contribute to saving countless lives and alleviating the fear and uncertainty associated with organ failure.I know how the experience of living with an organ that could fail on you is a terrifying thought that it could happen and that there may not ever be a match. I want to relieve that organ insecurity since even the whole process of obtaining one is extremely pricey. I want to give other people another chance at life, the same way I might be afforded one. The exorbitant costs and limited availability of organs only further highlight the urgent need for alternative solutions. To give another person a chance at life, or even prolong it enough for them to enjoy it more, is all I hope I can do to extend and allow them to enjoy. I would love to aid and become one of the greats such as Marie Curie and devote my life to advancing science to improve other people's lives since it is the least I could do as it allowed me to thrive as a person and give me a chance to live. Through my dedication to pushing the boundaries of biomedical engineering, I aim to make significant contributions to life-saving advancements and improve the overall quality of life for individuals in need. I firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are crucial drivers of innovation and are essential in addressing the world's most pressing challenges. My personal mission is to serve as a role model and inspire more women and underrepresented individuals to pursue careers in STEM. By sharing my own journey and achievements, I aspire to empower others to overcome societal barriers and embrace their potential to shape a brighter future through science and engineering.
    Aspiring Musician Scholarship
Music has been an integral part of my life since I was a child. From my earliest memories, I can recall the sound of music in the background of my daily routines. As I grew older, I began to realize the profound impact that music has had on shaping the way I view the world. Music has the power to make me feel connected to everyone and everything around me, providing a sense of serenity and peace that is difficult to find elsewhere. From the first moment I hear a melody, I am transported to another world. The notes and rhythms of a song have the ability to evoke emotions and memories that I may not have been aware of before. It's as if the music is a key that unlocks a hidden part of myself that I didn't know existed. Suddenly, I am more aware of my surroundings and the people around me. I feel more connected to the world at large. Music has the power to bring people together in a way that few other things can. When I attend a concert or a music festival, I am surrounded by people from all walks of life who have come together to celebrate their love of music. It doesn't matter what our differences may be - when the music starts, we are all united in our shared experience. I have made some of my closest friends at music events, and I am continually amazed at the sense of community that music can create. One of the most profound ways that music has shaped my view of the world is by providing a sense of serenity and peace. When I am feeling stressed or anxious, I turn to music as a way to calm my mind and soothe my soul. The gentle melodies and soothing rhythms of certain songs have a way of slowing down my racing thoughts and helping me to focus on the present moment. Whether I am listening to classical music or a more contemporary genre, I am always struck by the sense of calm that music can bring. Music has also given me a greater appreciation for the natural world around me. When I listen to music, I am often struck by the way that it incorporates sounds from the environment - the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the sound of waves crashing on the shore. These sounds remind me of the beauty and complexity of the world we live in, and they inspire me to be more mindful of my impact on the environment. In conclusion, music has had a profound impact on shaping the way I view the world. It has provided me with a sense of connection to the people and environment around me, as well as a sense of serenity and peace. Whether I am listening to music at home or attending a live event, I am continually amazed by the power that music has to bring people together and to evoke emotions and memories. I am grateful for the role that music has played in my life, and I look forward to exploring its many facets for years to come.
Jeannine Schroeder Women in Public Service Memorial Scholarship
I am working to address an important social issue by creating my own children's books that tackle topics that are often swept under the rug or that lack representation in traditional children's literature. My goal is to provide a platform for diversity and representation of little girls and boys who would otherwise be unread of, and to have stories about LGBTQ people, grief, and emotional expression. One of the main issues that I am addressing is the lack of minority representation in children's books. Many children grow up without seeing characters that look like them or come from similar backgrounds. This can have a negative impact on their self-esteem and sense of belonging. By creating books that feature diverse characters, I hope to provide children with a sense of validation and empowerment. Another issue that I am tackling is the lack of representation of LGBTQ characters in children's books. LGBTQ children often feel invisible and isolated, and it is important to provide them with stories that reflect their experiences and identities. By creating books that feature LGBTQ characters, I hope to promote acceptance and understanding among all children. One of my most important goals is to create books that address emotional topics that are often considered taboo or difficult to discuss with children. For example, I have written a book about grief and loss, which can be a difficult topic for children to understand and process. By creating a story that addresses these issues in a sensitive and age-appropriate way, I hope to provide children with a tool for coping with their own experiences of loss and grief. Another topic that I address in my books is the idea that boys can cry and express their emotions. Traditional gender roles often discourage boys from showing vulnerability or emotion, which can be harmful to their mental health and well-being. By creating stories that feature boys who cry and express their emotions, I hope to promote emotional intelligence and help boys feel comfortable expressing their feelings. In addition to creating books that address important social issues, I also strive to create stories that are engaging and entertaining for children. I believe that children's literature should be both fun and meaningful, and I work hard to create stories that capture children's imaginations while also teaching them important life lessons. In conclusion, I am working to address an important social issue by creating my own children's books that tackle topics that are often ignored or underrepresented in traditional children's literature. By providing diverse representation, addressing emotional topics, and promoting acceptance and understanding, I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of children and families everywhere.

As a young Indian bisexual woman, I have always felt a deep connection to the struggles of marginalized communities. Growing up in New York City, I witnessed the pain and fear of those who were not able to speak their truth about their gender identities. The constant pressure to conform to societal norms and expectations often left many feeling alone and repressed. It was during my high school years that I had an acquaintance who was terrified of outing herself as a lesbian. She was worried about the repercussions she might face, such as being outed to her family and the possibility of being ostracized from her community. It was then that I realized the dire need for a safe space where she and others like her could freely express themselves without fear of discrimination or harm. I took it upon myself to organize our school's Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) club, which aimed to provide a platform for LGBTQ+ students to discuss their experiences and seek support from their peers. Our club meetings were always filled with emotional discussions, thought-provoking debates, and a sense of belonging that was sorely lacking in our school community. It was incredibly heartening to witness the impact our club had on our school community. Students who were previously hesitant to speak out began to find their voices and share their stories, and for the first time, many felt seen and heard. Through our GSA club, I had the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many young people and empower them to be their authentic selves. As I move on to my college years, I am excited to continue my journey of advocacy and community-building. One of the organizations that caught my eye at Fordham University is their PRIDE Alliance, which aims to create a safe and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students on campus. Joining this group would allow me to continue developing a safe space for everyone to share their stories and to empower others to embrace their true selves. In today's society, where hate and discrimination continue to rear their ugly heads, it is more important than ever to advocate for marginalized communities. Through my experiences with the GSA club, I have seen firsthand how powerful it can be to create a space where individuals can be their true selves without fear of judgement. I am passionate about promoting social justice and creating a more inclusive society for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or background. As a young Indian bisexual woman, I know that I have a unique perspective to offer in the fight for equality and acceptance. I want to use my voice and my experiences to make a positive impact on the world, and I believe that joining the PRIDE Alliance at Fordham is the perfect way to do just that. I am excited to continue my journey of advocacy, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.

Growing up in an immigrant family has given me a unique perspective on the struggles that are often faced by these communities. Our family persevered through financial hardships, limited healthcare access, and a lack of representation in government policies. As a result, I feel a deep sense of indebtedness to my community and have made it my priority to uplift those around me who are facing similar adversity. In high school, I began participating in community service work by volunteering in food drives and soup kitchens. These experiences opened my eyes to how poverty and a lack of resources disproportionately affect immigrant communities. I felt compelled to do more and eventually joined a canteen program that provided free meals to those who were homeless or struggling with food insecurity. Working in the canteen program has been incredibly rewarding. Through this experience, I have learned the intricacies of connecting with people and appreciating their struggles. I have developed an invaluable understanding of their needs and the ways in which I can help my local community. Giving meals was only one facet of the wide range of needs of the people I served. They needed support in their day-to-day lives. Therefore, we strived to create a safe and supportive environment for them in the canteen, which helped improve their lives beyond just providing food. This experience has taught me the importance of proactive assistance to people in need and how it can create ripple effects of positivity throughout their lives and help them break out of the poverty cycle. Now, as a college-bound student of an immigrant family, I plan to continue pursuing community work and use my education as a means of creating structural change. My experience in the canteen program has provided me with invaluable tools that I can use to better understand the needs and challenges of the communities that I plan to serve. My goal is to work towards implementing educational and healthcare reforms that especially benefit immigrant communities. I want to serve as an advocate for changes in policies surrounding immigrant access to resources and work towards promoting greater inclusion in the workforce. I have witnessed firsthand how the combination of a lack of education and healthcare disproportionately impacts immigrant communities. Without a proper education, opportunities are limited, and people are unable to advance in their careers. A lack of healthcare often leads to undiagnosed conditions, which can spiral into much more significant health issues, further exacerbating financial instability. These factors make it harder for immigrants to gain citizenship or access assistance from the government, leaving them feeling unsupported and neglected. I believe that my experience in an immigrant family and my passion for making a positive impact give me a unique perspective that I can use in my studies and future career. I want to provide aid to those who need it most, and after college, I look forward to pursuing meaningful work that directly impacts communities facing similar struggles as my own. In conclusion, working in the canteen program showed me the issues of poverty and the lack of resources within immigrant communities, and I plan on using my education to effectuate positive changes in terms of inclusive rights, healthcare access, and support to those in need. It has inspired me to keep seeking opportunities to help communities in and around me and work towards community enrichment.

If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, it would be René Descartes' "Meditations on First Philosophy." In particular, I believe that the first meditation, "Concerning Those Things That Can Be Called Into Doubt," is an incredible work that could benefit many people. In the first meditation, Descartes presents a skeptical outlook on the world, offering doubts on everything one might believe to be true. He argues that individuals should doubt even the simplest things, like whether or not their senses are reliable, and even more complex beliefs, such as the existence of God. By doing so, he challenges us to rethink the assumptions that we make about the world, and search for a more concrete absolute truth that can be relied on. In today’s society, we are often comfortable with assuming the truth of various beliefs or values that we have inherited from others. We may not question why we hold these beliefs, or whether these beliefs are actually grounded in true knowledge. This tendency is particularly concerning, given how easily manipulated one can be by those who know how to appeal to our emotions, personal fears or desires. As a result, we require growth in our ability to question our inherent assumptions and beliefs that have developed over time. Reading "Meditations on First Philosophy" and specifically focusing on the first meditation, prompts thorough reflection on how we understand ourselves and the world. It brings to light the importance of questioning our beliefs, the principle of skepticism, and the importance of arriving at truths grounded in reason rather than assumption. By questioning what we believe to be true by doing an idea audit, it can develop a sense of humility and open-mindedness that will allow readers to become better listeners and become better at having meaningful conversation when in discourse with others. In conclusion, René Descartes' "Meditations on First Philosophy" and particularly the first meditation, can provide readers with valuable lessons that can encourage self-reflection and the exploration of fundamental truths. It can lead to a better understanding of the world and foster humility as one realizes that some beliefs are not grounded in true knowledge. Thus, it would be an incredible book for all individuals to read, especially as it pertains to forging a better society based on true knowledge rather than mere assumptions.
    CEW IV Foundation Scholarship Program
Throughout history, society's approach to responding to disadvantaged individuals has often been punitive, with a focus on punishment rather than support. Particularly in the United States, we have seen policies and practices that criminalize poverty and disproportionately impact marginalized communities. It is essential to acknowledge that systemic barriers exist that disproportionately impact marginalized communities. These barriers make it incredibly difficult for individuals living in poverty to obtain an education, access healthcare and other essential resources, leading to the perpetuation of poverty cycles. The vicious cycle continues, as those living in poverty forgo essential resources needed to develop themselves and their community, and the cycle goes on, repeating itself. Instead of focusing on punishment and neglect, society must move towards empowering communities and individuals with the necessary resources and tools to succeed. The saying "give a man a fish, and he eats for a day, but teach a man to fish, and he eats for life" holds a significant truth as giving people resources to help them thrive in the long run is key to creating cycles of success - breaking down the root cause of this systemic issue. By providing adequate resources, support, and access to education and healthcare, we enable individuals to overcome their limitations and make sustainable, long-lasting changes. Most disadvantaged individuals understand their predicament well and have trouble finding their own way to break free from such a cycle of poverty, including some of the systemic issues around them, and just rely on someone to give them a helping hand. While it may seem more expensive to provide this support, it will be cheaper in the long run than punishing and excluding individuals, creating a positive feedback loop of progress and hope. It is also crucial to recognize that many of those who find themselves in poverty are not inherently lazy or unwilling to make an effort. They need a fair chance to succeed, access, and representation to make it to the next step of progress. Focusing on recognizing the humanity of those living in desperate conditions of marginalization can prove to be a motivating force to offer support that will lead to a break in the cycle. When marginalized individuals feel neglected or punished for their situation, they can become embittered and untrusting in society. This can deepen the rifts between them and the rest of society, exacerbating systemic hate and discrimination that can lead to further separations and division within society. It is therefore essential to approach them with an empathetic lens, showcasing genuine concern and understanding, rather than shunning or ostracizing disadvantaged individuals. Community service work can provide an invaluable toolset for understanding the needs and challenges of marginalized communities. It allows for the development of an understanding of identifying the needs of the community and providing support beyond merely giving the essentials, such as day-to-day support, advocacy for resources, and creating a supportive environment. In conclusion, it is necessary for society to change its approach towards our fellow marginalized individuals, abandoning punitive measures and instead embracing a more empathic and supportive one. This must happen through an understanding of the needs of the community, the development of the necessary tools to empower them, a structural shift from the government and the society at large, and a shared recognition of the humanity of every member of society. Only then can we begin to break the vicious cycle of poverty and marginalization and create a more just, more prosperous, and more equitable society for all.

Living sustainably in our daily lives is becoming increasingly important, as the Earth's resources are finite and we must take action to preserve them for future generations. We can make many small changes to our lives, including living sustainably, conserving energy, eating a clean diet, and using transport with others. One of the intentional choices we can make to live sustainably is to reduce our use of plastic. Plastic is an environmental hazard that takes hundreds of years to degrade and can have a devastating impact on wildlife and their habitats. We can reduce our use of plastic by carrying reusable shopping bags, using refillable water bottles, and avoiding single-use plastic packaging whenever possible. This small change can have a significant impact in reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our landfills and oceans. Another way we can live sustainably is to conserve energy. Energy conservation not only helps to reduce our carbon footprint, but it can also save us money on our electricity bills. Simple actions such as turning off lights when leaving a room, unplugging appliances when they're not in use, and using energy-efficient light bulbs can all contribute to energy conservation. Eating a plant-based diet can also have a positive impact on our carbon footprint. Meat production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing our consumption of meat and dairy products can help to reduce our carbon footprint. This doesn't mean we need to become strict vegetarians or vegans, but we can make an effort to eat more plant-based meals and reduce our consumption of animal products. Using public transportation, carpooling, or biking instead of driving a car can also make a significant impact on our carbon footprint. Cars emit carbon dioxide and other harmful pollutants that contribute to climate change, and reducing our use of cars can help to reduce these emissions. Why is it important to reduce our carbon footprint? The answer is simple: climate change is one of the biggest threats facing our planet, and it's caused by human activity. Climate change can have devastating consequences, including rising sea levels, more frequent and severe weather events, and habitat loss for wildlife. By reducing our carbon footprint, we can help to slow the effects of climate change and preserve our planet for future generations. In conclusion, living sustainably is essential if we want to preserve our planet for future generations. We can all make small changes in our daily lives to reduce our carbon footprint, such as reducing our use of plastic, conserving energy, eating a plant-based diet, using public transportation, carpooling, or biking instead of driving. These small changes can have a significant impact on reducing our carbon footprint and helping to slow the effects of climate change. Let's all make an effort to live sustainably and preserve our planet for future generations

    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
well, it's not because I enjoy feeling like a human calculator, that's for sure. No, the real reason I love math is that it's the most reliable thing in my life. I mean, have you ever had a problem that couldn't be solved with math? I didn't think so. When I'm working on a math problem, there's always a clear and straightforward solution. It's not like dealing with humans, where the answer is always some convoluted mess that requires reading between the lines and interpreting facial expressions. Nope, with math, the answer is right there in front of you, waiting to be discovered. And let's not forget about the technical aspect of math. I mean, sure, it can be a little dry and boring at times, but at least it's not wishy-washy like some other subjects. You can't argue with math, you can't spin it to fit your own agenda, and you can't just ignore it when it's inconvenient. Math is the ultimate straight shooter, and I love that about it. Plus, have you ever tried to argue with a math equation? It's a losing battle, my friend. It's like trying to convince a rock to move out of your way by using persuasive language. It's just not going to happen. But the best thing about math? It's universal. No matter where you go, no matter what language you speak, math is the same. It's like the one thing that unites us all. You don't need a translator to understand a math problem, and you don't need to worry about cultural differences getting in the way of finding the solution.

The day my grandfather passed away was the day my world shattered. I was in disbelief, and couldn't believe that someone so full of life could be taken away from me so suddenly. But as the days and weeks passed, I began to realize just how much his passing had affected me, and how it had changed the way I saw the world and my place in it. I had always been someone who was content to live my life quietly, without causing too much of a stir. But my grandfather's death made me realize that life is too short to be lived that way. It made me realize that I needed to stand up for myself and fight for what I believed in. I knew that I couldn't let his death be in vain and that I needed to honor his memory by living a life that reflected the love and support he had given to me. As I struggled to come to terms with his absence, I began to reflect on the impact he had made on my life. He had been my constant source of support and encouragement, and I knew that I would never be able to fully express my gratitude for all that he had done for me. My grandfather had always believed in me, even when I had lost faith in myself. And in his memory, I knew that I had to continue to fight, to be a voice for those who had been silenced, and to stand up for what was right. I began to think about all of the sacrifices that my loved ones had made for me to be where I am today. My parents had worked tirelessly to provide for me, and my grandfather had always been there to offer his wisdom and guidance. I knew that I had a responsibility to honor those sacrifices and make the most of the opportunities I had been given. That's when I decided to become an advocate for those who were less fortunate than me. I wanted to fight for people who were discriminated against because of their gender, sexuality, or race. I knew that I had been given opportunities that others hadn't, and I wanted to use those opportunities to help others. I chose to pursue a career in bioengineering because I knew that it was a field that had the potential to make a real difference in people's lives. I wanted to use my education to help people live longer, healthier lives, and to ensure that everyone had access to the same opportunities for health and well-being. Through my education in bioengineering, I hoped to find new ways to improve people's lives and make a real difference in the world. And with every challenge I faced, I reminded myself of my grandfather's unwavering spirit and resilience. The loss of my grandfather was devastating, but it also gave me a sense of purpose and direction. It made me realize that I had the power to make a difference in the world and that I had a responsibility to use that power for good. I will never forget my grandfather, and I will always carry his memory with me as I continue to fight for what matters most. His loss was a devastating blow, but it also taught me the value of cherishing every moment and the importance of living a life that truly matters. I will always carry his memory with me, and I will continue to fight for what he believed in - equality, justice, and the unyielding strength of the human spirit.

Diversity is essential in any field, and public relations is no exception. When diverse voices are included in public relations efforts, it can have a profound impact on shaping public narratives. By representing and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, diverse public relations professionals can bring a new level of depth and understanding to the stories they tell. One way that diverse voices can impact public relations is by promoting inclusivity in media and advertising. By creating content that accurately represents the diversity of the population, public relations professionals can help to reduce stereotypes and biases in the media. This is particularly important in industries such as fashion and beauty, where there has historically been a lack of representation for people of color, different body types, and people with disabilities. By featuring models and spokespeople from a range of backgrounds, public relations professionals can help to promote a more inclusive and accepting society. Another way that diverse voices can impact public relations is by shaping public policy. When underrepresented communities are given a voice, they can help to inform policymakers about the unique challenges they face. This can include issues such as access to healthcare, education, and affordable housing. By advocating for policy changes that address these issues, public relations professionals can help to create a more equitable society. I come from Queens, a melting pot of many cultures. I was raised in a first-generation immigrant family and understand how many community members have to band together to support each other. As an Indian Bisexual, in my community, I have learned collaboration and how people banding together can help those in need, as well as how discrimination hurts many people or creates a difficult living situation. I have connected with many different people throughout my community, both online and in person, and have learned of their stories, and how they experience the world. I have learned about how individuals' socio-economic status changes their lives, the beauty of different cultures all around the world, and how neurodivergence challenges individuals in life but allows them to be extremely strong in their niches, and I can keep listing. I have been able to learn from others, and have a wider lens, which impacts how I collaborate, lead, and communicate with others and is my motivation for being able to make the world much more accessible to other individuals. I have been able to even learn more about myself, as a minority as well. I have been able to learn about Wicca, which I now practice in tandem with Hinduism, and I follow practices such as who to pray to, and how to pray. I have also learned about my own Bisexuality and culture. One area that I have become particularly passionate about is biomedical engineering. I have been fascinated by the ways that technology can be used to improve human health and quality of life, and I believe that this field has the potential to provide new opportunities for people who are disadvantaged.
