Public Service Scholarship of the Law Office of Shane Kadlec
Public service has always been more than just a career choice; it’s a calling and my motto, a commitment to improving the lives of others in the most direct and impactful way possible. My passion for public service, particularly in the field of child life, is deeply rooted in my personal experiences as a young patient. When I was seven years old, I underwent heart surgery, a procedure that would have been terrifying if not for the comforting presence of a child life specialist. That experience not only shaped my recovery but also inspired me to pursue a career where I could provide the same comfort and support to other children facing similar challenges.
The hospital can be an overwhelming place for anyone, but especially for a child. The unfamiliar environment, the constant stream of medical staff, the strange sounds, and the uncertainty of what’s happening can create a profound sense of fear. I remember feeling completely out of my element, surrounded by machines and people I didn’t know, all while grappling with the knowledge that something was wrong with my heart. It was a lot for my seven-year-old self to process, and I was scared.
Enter the child life specialist. I still remember her kindness and gentle approach, how she spoke to me in a way that made everything feel less frightening. She explained the procedures in terms I could understand, using toys and drawings to help me visualize what was going to happen. She didn’t just talk to me; she played with me, distracting me with games and stories, making the sterile hospital room feel a little bit like home. More importantly, she made me feel seen and heard at a time when I felt lost in a world of adult concerns. Her presence was a beacon of light in what could have been a very dark time for me, and I knew even then that I wanted to be that light for other children.
Public service, particularly in healthcare, allows me to give back in a meaningful way, providing emotional support to children during some of their most vulnerable moments. It’s about more than just a job; it’s about making a difference in the lives of children and their families, helping them navigate the complexities of medical treatment with as much ease and comfort as possible.
As I’ve grown older, my interest in public service has only deepened. My motto in life has become, "service over self." I’ve been exploring various avenues within healthcare, but I keep returning to the role of a child life specialist because it aligns perfectly with my desire to work directly with children and make a tangible difference in their lives. My career path allows me to combine my passion for helping others with my interest in healthcare, and it gives me the opportunity to be there for children in the same way someone was there for me.
In pursuing a career in public service, I’m driven by the my own hospital experience with a Child Life Specialist. Her impact on my life was profound, and I’m committed to paying that forward, it is my calling and something I am passionate about. I want to be the person who can turn a child’s fear into understanding, who can bring comfort in the midst of chaos, and who can help children and families navigate the often daunting world of healthcare. Public service as a child life specialist isn’t just a career for me; it’s a way to give back, to be a source of light for others, just as someone was for me.

My odyssey as a Child Life Specialist is a testament to my relentless pursuit of excellence fueled by an insatiable ambition, an unwavering drive, and an unyielding commitment to make a profound impact on the lives of others. At the heart of this journey is my transformative personal experience. When I was in second grade, I underwent heart surgery. The experience was daunting, but I found solace and strength in the compassionate care provided by a child life specialist. This individual helped me overcome my fear of IV's and tubes, making a frightening experience more bearable. Their empathy inspired me to pursue a career as a child life specialist. I want to provide the same comfort and support to other children facing medical challenges. This career path is my way of giving back, of being there for children and their families during some of their most vulnerable moments.
As people have helped me along my healthcare journey, I developed my life motto: “Service over self.” One of the ways I have embodied these values is through my journey as a blood donor. Being a universal blood donor, I understood the importance of my contribution. However, giving blood was not an easy task for me. I had to overcome my fear of needles and the anxiety of passing out during the process. The first time I donated, I was so nervous that I nearly fainted, but I persevered. I focused on the thought of how my blood could save someone’s life, and that motivated me to push through my fear. This experience taught me resilience and the power of selflessness.
In addition to donating blood, I have engaged in several other community service activities. Volunteering at local shelters has allowed me to connect with individuals who are experiencing homelessness. By serving meals and organizing donation drives, I have contributed to alleviating some of the hardships they face. Receiving heartfelt thanks from people, like "God Bless what you are doing," has been incredibly rewarding and has strengthened my commitment to helping those in need.
Beyond my professional aspirations, I actively participate in various community service initiatives. I volunteer at after-school programs, helping children with their homework to instill confidence. These programs are essential for providing a safe and supportive environment for children, especially those from underserved communities. Through my involvement, I aim to inspire these children to dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.
My ambition is not limited to individual acts of service; I envision creating larger-scale impacts through my future endeavors. As a child life specialist, I plan to advocate for policies that improve pediatric care and support services for families. Additionally, I intend to establish a non-profit organization focused on providing resources and support to children with chronic illnesses and their families. This organization would offer counseling, educational resources, and recreational activities to help children cope with their medical conditions and lead fulfilling lives.
My journey has been shaped by a deep-seated desire to give back to others. From overcoming my fear to donate blood to volunteering at shelters and pursuing a career dedicated to helping children, I strive to embody the values of ambition, drive, and service. I am committed to making a positive impact on the world and leaving behind a legacy of compassion and selflessness. Through continued community service and professional dedication, I aim to create a better future for the next generation. The support from this scholarship could help me fulfill my dreams of helping others to the best of my ability.

The excitement was in the air as a long, sleek stretch limousine pulled up to my house. I was just nine years old, about to attend my very first concert, and not just any concert, Taylor Swift with Ed Sheeran as the opening act. The venue was at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, a place so iconic that it felt like the center of the universe to me.
Climbing into the limousine, I felt like royalty. The plush seats enveloped me, and the ceiling sparkled with tiny, twinkling lights, mimicking the night sky. My mom sat across from me, her eyes twinkling with excitement, while my best friend sat next to me, bouncing in her seat with uncontainable glee. The three of us were dressed in our best concert attire, with glittery tops, denim shorts, and sparkly sneakers, because if you are going to see Taylor Swift, you must have some sparkle.
As the limousine glided down the streets, I could not resist waving to everyone we passed. I imagined myself as a rich and famous person, my hand elegantly lifting and falling in a regal wave. However, the dark tinted glass of the limo windows prevented anyone from seeing inside, so my grand gestures went unnoticed. It did not matter, though; in my mind, I was already a star.
The journey to Arlington was filled with laughter and chatter. We played Taylor Swift's greatest hits on the limousine's sound system, singing along at the top of our lungs. Each song was a warm-up for the main event, a chance to revel in the music that had become the soundtrack to so many of our memories. My mom shared stories of her own concert experiences, adding an extra layer of anticipation and excitement.
As we approached AT&T Stadium, the sheer size of the venue took my breath away. It was a gigantic, shimmering beacon of light and sound. The energy of the crowd was infectious.
The anticipation was electric. We found our seats, and I marveled at the sheer scale of the place. The stage was a masterpiece, with enormous screens and elaborate decorations, promising a night of unforgettable performances.
When Ed Sheeran took the stage, the crowd erupted. He was phenomenal, his voice filling the stadium with raw emotional acoustic performance. He played his guitar with such passion that it was impossible not to be captivated. As he sang "The A-Team" and "Lego House," I felt like I was part of something magical, something bigger than myself.
Then, it was time for Taylor Swift. The lights dimmed, and the stadium went silent with anticipation. Suddenly, the stage exploded with light and sound, and there she was, the pop princess herself. Taylor Swift owned the stage, her presence commanding and her voice flawless. She performed hit after hit, each song accompanied by stunning visuals and choreography.
My favorite moment was when she sang "Love Story." The entire stadium sang along, and in that moment, I felt a profound connection to everyone around me. It was as if we were all part of one big, joyous family, united by the music we loved.
The concert was a whirlwind of emotions, music, and unforgettable moments. As we rode back home in the limousine, exhausted but elated, I realized that this night would stay with me forever. It was not just about the music or the spectacle; it was about the memories we created together. My first concert was more than just an event, it was an adventure, a night of pure magic that I would cherish for the rest of my life.

My name is Megan Barker, a sophomore at the University of Arkansas, majoring in Child Life Specialist studies and proudly a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority within the Panhellenic Greek life. My journey toward a career dedicated to helping children began with a deeply personal experience. As a child, I was diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia that required surgery. The compassionate care I received from a Child Life Specialist during this challenging time inspired me to pursue a career where I could offer the same comfort and support to others.
Our family motto, "service over self," has always guided my actions and decisions. This principle became particularly significant when I learned of a critical blood shortage in our community. Despite my longstanding fear of giving blood, which often led to me fainting, I felt a profound responsibility to contribute. Giving blood may seem like a simple task to many, but for me, it was a significant obstacle to overcome.
Determined to make a positive impact, I decided to face my fear head-on. The prospect of potentially saving lives, just as those in the hospital had saved mine, motivated me to push through my anxiety. With the support of my family and friends, I prepared myself mentally and physically to donate blood.
The experience was challenging, but it was also immensely rewarding. As I sat in the donation chair, I reminded myself of the many children and families who would benefit from my contribution. This thought gave me the strength to remain calm and focused throughout the process. I am proud to say that I successfully donated blood, contributing to alleviating the community's shortage.
This act of service not only helped my community but also reaffirmed my commitment to my chosen career path. I hope that my blood donation saved lives and provided much-needed support to those in medical emergencies, just as others had done for me during my heart surgery. Overcoming my fear of giving blood was a personal victory and a testament to the power of service over self.
Through my involvement in Zeta Tau Alpha, I have continued to embrace opportunities to serve others, whether through fundraising for breast cancer education and awareness or volunteering at local shelters. Each experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of giving back and supporting those in need.
As I continue my studies and prepare for a career as a Child Life Specialist, I am committed to embodying the values of compassion, service, and resilience. The experiences that shaped my childhood have become the foundation of my dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of others. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to serve and am eager to continue this journey of helping and healing.
In reflection, my journey has been defined by overcoming personal challenges and dedicating myself to the service of others. By facing my fear of giving blood, I was able to contribute to my community in a meaningful way. I look forward to a future where I can continue to make a difference, driven by the same spirit of service that has guided me thus far.

Life is a journey filled with unexpected challenges, and for me, the path became particularly arduous during my high school years. Faced with the turmoil of my parents' divorce and financial constraints, coupled with the burden of anxiety, I found myself navigating the turbulent waters of adolescence. However, amidst the storm, new friendships emerged as beacons of hope, guiding me towards resilience and personal growth.
The divorce of my parents marked a profound turning point in my life. The emotional toll it took on our family was compounded by financial strain, as resources became scarce. Coping with the aftermath of divorce while struggling with economic adversity created an environment that was not only mentally taxing but also financially restricting. As I entered high school, the pressure to fit in and conform to societal norms intensified, placing an additional burden on my already fragile emotional state.
One of the most noticeable challenges I faced was the inability to afford new clothes. In a high school environment where appearances often dictated social acceptance, this limitation was a source of constant anxiety. I vividly remember the struggle to blend in while being acutely aware of my financial constraints. Yet, it was during these challenging times that I discovered the true essence of friendship.
New friendships became my lifeline, offering support and understanding in ways I could not have anticipated. These friends saw beyond material possessions, embracing the person I was rather than the clothes I wore. Their acceptance provided me with a sense of belonging and eased the burden of societal expectations. In their company, I found solace and learned the invaluable lesson that genuine connections transcend material wealth.
In the midst of these hardships, my motto transformed into "service over self." Inspired by the love and support I received from my friends, I sought ways to give back to my community. The concept of Agape love, selfless and unconditional, became a guiding principle in my life. Instead of succumbing to bitterness or resentment, I chose to channel my experiences into acts of kindness volunteering at local food banks.
As the universal donor blood type, I recognized the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Regular blood donations became a tangible way for me to embody Agape love and contribute to the well-being of my community. Knowing that my blood could potentially save lives reinforced my commitment to service over self. It was a small but impactful way to give back, fostering a sense of purpose and connection with those around me.
The impact facing the hardships of my parents' divorce, financial constraints, and anxiety during high school was undoubtedly challenging. However, the unwavering support of new friendships and the embodiment of Agape love guided me through those difficult times. By adopting a motto of "service over self" and actively giving back to my community through blood donations and volunteering at community food drives, I found a profound sense of purpose. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of Agape love, resilience, and the profound impact that selfless service can have on both individuals and communities.

Growing up in a single-parent household, with my mom as my anchor, has profoundly shaped my journey through education, molding me into the resilient and determined individual I am today. This experience has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on my academic pursuits, instilling in me the values of perseverance, responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to achieving my dreams.
The absence of a second parental figure in my home meant that my mom had to shoulder the responsibilities of both provider and nurturer. Witnessing her tireless efforts to make ends meet while still being present for my upbringing has been a source of inspiration. It taught me the importance of hard work, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of one's goals despite the odds stacked against us.
Navigating the educational landscape under these circumstances has been both challenging and rewarding. The prospect of becoming a nurse represents not just a career choice but a calling to contribute meaningfully to society.
However, the financial strain of pursuing a nursing education has been a constant concern. The dream of becoming a nurse comes with the reality of tuition fees, textbooks, and other associated costs. These experiences have not only enriched my understanding of social responsibility but have also honed my organizational and teamwork skills. Such qualities are invaluable in both personal and professional realms, creating a foundation for success built on empathy and collaboration.
Intramural volleyball has been another integral part of my college journey, offering a dynamic outlet for physical activity and fostering a sense of camaraderie. The sport demands strategic thinking, effective communication, and adaptability – skills that extend far beyond the volleyball court. As a team player, I have learned to navigate challenges collaboratively, celebrate victories together, and gracefully accept defeat as an opportunity for growth. These lessons have translated seamlessly into various aspects of my life, reinforcing the importance of resilience, teamwork, and a positive mindset in overcoming obstacles.
Becoming a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority has provided a sense of belonging and sisterhood, creating a support system that transcends the boundaries of the academic environment. The sorority's commitment to philanthropy (breast cancer awareness) has allowed me to actively contribute to causes that resonate with me, amplifying my impact on the community. Beyond the philanthropic efforts, the sorority has served as a platform for personal growth and leadership development. By assuming various roles within the organization, I have refined my organizational, communication, and leadership skills, laying the groundwork for future professional success.
Collectively, my involvement in these extracurricular activities has not only enriched my college experience but has also contributed significantly to my personal and professional success. The diverse skill set acquired through volunteering, volleyball, and sorority membership has equipped me with a holistic toolkit for navigating the complexities of the real world. From communication and teamwork to leadership and resilience, each activity has played a distinctive role in shaping my character and preparing me for the challenges that lie ahead.
As I reflect on my college journey, it is evident that the lessons learned and connections forged through these extracurricular activities have been instrumental in my growth. In the quiet corners of our minds, battles are fought silently, and scars are etched on the soul. Depression, a shadow that can envelop even the brightest of days, is an adversary that often goes unnoticed. The journey through depression is deeply personal, filled with challenges that test the limits of one's resilience. It is a journey that demands self-awareness, courage, and a willingness to seek help. In my own odyssey through the realms of darkness, I discovered that the keys to healing lay in self-care, counseling, and the transformative power of conversation.
The stigma surrounding mental health has long been a barrier to seeking help, perpetuating a culture of silence that shrouds those grappling with depression. Initiatives like Mental Health America campaign have been instrumental in dismantling this stigma, encouraging open dialogue, and fostering a sense of community. It was within this evolving landscape that I found the courage to confront my own mental health struggles.
The first step towards healing was acknowledging the presence of anxiety and depression in my life. It required a level of introspection that, at times, felt uncomfortable. Yet, the realization that my mental health was just as important as my physical well-being empowered me to take charge of my own narrative. It was a journey of self-discovery, one that led me to embrace self-care as an essential component of my daily routine.
However, the path to healing is not a solitary one. Counseling emerged as a transformative force, providing me with a safe space to unpack the complexities of my emotions. The therapeutic process was not about erasing the scars but understanding their origins and learning to navigate the emotional landscape with resilience. A skilled counselor became a guide, helping me develop coping mechanisms and fostering a sense of empowerment to confront the challenges ahead.
The power of conversation cannot be overstated in the context of mental health. Sharing my struggles with trusted friends and family was a cathartic experience that dissolved the isolation that often accompanies depression. Honest and open conversations became a bridge connecting me to a support system that played a crucial role in my journey towards healing. My journey led to me advocating for mental health awareness with the local community college called “Out of the Darkness”.
The "Out of the Darkness mission" serves as a powerful beacon of hope, illuminating the often-overlooked shadows surrounding mental health. This collective movement not only raises awareness but also actively bridges the gap between the darkness of stigma and the light of understanding. The mission serves as a platform to raise crucial resources for mental health initiatives, supporting organizations that provide assistance, education, and resources to those in need. As individuals step out of the darkness and into the light, they contribute to a brighter future where mental health is prioritized, understood, and met with compassion and support.
As I reflect on my journey through depression, I am reminded that healing is not a destination but an ongoing process. The scars may linger, but they serve as a testament to the strength that emerged from the depths of despair. By embracing self-care, seeking counseling, and advocating for mental health, we not only heal ourselves but become beacons of hope for others navigating the labyrinth of mental health challenges. In the symphony of shared experiences, we find harmony, breaking the silence and paving the way for a brighter, more compassionate future.

Life is an unpredictable journey filled with twists and turns, and occasionally, it throws challenges our way that test the strength of our character. One such defining moment in my life occurred when I was confronted with the daunting reality of heart arrhythmia. Overcoming this unexpected health setback forced me to reevaluate my priorities, face my fears, and inspired a transformative journey towards resilience and a renewed sense of purpose.
The diagnosis of heart arrhythmia initially struck fear into my heart, both metaphorically and literally. The prospect of undergoing heart surgery to correct the condition was a daunting and intimidating thought. The mere idea of having my heart, the vital organ that sustains life, undergo such a procedure instilled a deep sense of anxiety within me. It was during this trying time that I discovered the true strength of faith, the unwavering support of family, and the comforting presence of friends.
With faith as my guiding light, I approached the challenges that lay ahead with a newfound perspective. I began to view my heart arrhythmia not solely as a setback but as an opportunity for personal growth and resilience. The unconditional support from my family and friends became a crucial pillar in my journey. Their encouragement and reassurance served as a constant reminder that I was not alone in facing this adversity.
Contemplating the prospect of heart surgery, I meticulously weighed the benefits against the potential risks and alternatives. It became evident that surgery was not merely a correction of a physical ailment but a strategic plan for a healthier and more fulfilling life. The alternative of a lifetime reliance on medication was a path I was reluctant to tread, and surgery emerged as the more viable option.
The plan of action involved not only the surgical procedure itself but also a comprehensive approach to recovery. Surrounding myself with a support system that included family, friends, and healthcare professionals, I embarked on this transformative journey. Their collective encouragement and the expertise of the medical team alleviated many of my fears, making the road to recovery less arduous.
This experience fundamentally altered my perception of life. It taught me the fragility of health and the importance of embracing every moment with gratitude. The resilience I discovered within myself during this ordeal became a driving force, pushing me to seek a career that would allow me to make a positive impact on others facing similar challenges.
The profound care and compassion exhibited by the nurses during my recovery left an indelible mark on me. It was during this time that I discovered my calling, to become a pediatric/neonatal nurse. Witnessing firsthand the impact that compassionate healthcare professionals can have on individuals in their most vulnerable moments, I felt a deep sense of purpose to help other children when faced with adversity.
Facing the adversity of my heart arrhythmia was a transformative journey that reshaped my outlook on life. It revealed the power of faith, the importance of a dedicated support system, and the significance of making informed decisions in the face of uncertainty. This experience not only strengthened my resolve but also ignited a passion to pursue a career where I could make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, just as the nurses did for me during my challenging time. Discovering my true calling emerged as a result of triumphing over personal health adversity, leading me to embark on a fulfilling career in pediatric nursing.
Academic Liberty & Free Speech Scholarship
Freedom of speech is a fundamental right that serves as the cornerstone of a democratic society, providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard and ensuring the protection of individual liberties. This right plays a pivotal role in granting equal rights to people of all races, religions, and backgrounds, fostering a society that embraces diversity. In the realm of nursing, the importance of free speech becomes even more apparent as it contributes to the delivery of culturally sensitive and inclusive healthcare.
Nursing, as a profession, requires practitioners to engage with individuals from various cultural and religious backgrounds. The ability to express oneself freely becomes crucial in understanding and respecting the diverse beliefs and values of patients. Free speech allows nurses to communicate effectively, building trust with patients and establishing a therapeutic relationship that is essential for quality healthcare.
In the context of healthcare, embracing free speech goes hand in hand with critical thinking skills. Nurses who are encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions openly are better equipped to analyze situations critically. This, in turn, leads to improved problem-solving abilities and a more powerful healthcare system. Critical thinking enables healthcare professionals to navigate the complexities of patient care while considering the individual needs and cultural nuances of diverse populations.
In addition, the preservation of freedom of speech on university campuses, such as the University of Arkansas, is crucial for the holistic development of students and the advancement of knowledge. Universities serve as hubs for intellectual exploration and diverse perspectives. By upholding free speech, institutions create an environment where students are exposed to a variety of ideas and are encouraged to think critically and inclusively.
In nursing education, this commitment to free speech is particularly relevant. Students must be allowed to express their opinions, question established norms, and engage in thoughtful dialouge. This not only enhances their understanding of healthcare but also prepares them to navigate the complexities of a diverse and ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
The University of Arkansas, as an academic institution, plays a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare professionals. By preserving freedom of speech on campus, the university ensures that its nursing students are equipped with the skills needed to provide inclusive and culturally competent care. This commitment to free speech fosters an environment where ideas can flourish, ultimately contributing to the betterment of healthcare practices.
The culmination of free speech is a fundamental right that empowers individuals from all walks of life. In the field of nursing, it is instrumental in promoting cultural sensitivity, critical thinking, and inclusive healthcare. By preserving freedom of speech on the University of Arkansas campus, the institution actively contributes to the development of healthcare professionals who can navigate the complexities of a diverse world with empathy, understanding, and intellectual rigor.

This involves engaging in meaningful conversations that promote the value of life, volunteering with organizations that provide support to pregnant women, and actively participating in events that raise awareness about the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. By living out these values, I aim to be a visible and vocal advocate for the vulnerable and voiceless, particularly the unborn.
Looking ahead to my career path, my faith plays a pivotal role in shaping my future goals. As a pre-nursing student with a specific interest in labor and delivery, my aim is to save babies by providing compassionate care to both mothers and their infants. The labor and delivery setting is a critical space where advocacy for the unborn can be translated into tangible action. I view each birth as a testament to the miracle of life, reinforcing my commitment to protecting and nurturing the most vulnerable among us.
My educational journey is a crucial component of my mission to enact change and protect all stages of life. Pursuing nursing as a profession aligns seamlessly with my Pro-Life convictions. The skills and knowledge gained in my education will empower me to provide the best possible care to both mothers and infants, fostering an environment that values and protects life from its earliest moments.
I plan to leverage my education to actively contribute to the Pro-Life cause by promoting ethical and compassionate care within the healthcare system. This involves advocating for policies that safeguard the rights of the unborn, raising awareness about the value of every life within the medical community, and fostering a culture of life-affirming practices. Additionally, I aspire to engage in community outreach programs that provide support to pregnant women, addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
In conclusion, as a Pro-Life Christian and a pre-nursing student, my faith is not a passive belief but a driving force that shapes my daily life, career aspirations, and educational pursuits. By actively living out my convictions, pursuing a career in labor and delivery, and using my education to advocate for the unborn, I aim to be a beacon of hope and change in a world that is in desperate need of defenders of life at all stages.

Travel has the remarkable ability to transcend mere geographical exploration and become a powerful catalyst for personal growth and development. Beyond the thrill of discovering new landscapes, individuals who embark on journeys are exposed to diverse cultures, perspectives, and environments that can profoundly shape their character and worldview. When coupled with service to others, such as in the context of a nursing career, the transformative potential of travel becomes even more pronounced.
One of the key ways in which travel fosters personal development is through exposure to different cultures. When individuals immerse themselves in unfamiliar societies, they are compelled to confront and appreciate the richness of human diversity. Interacting with people whose beliefs, traditions, and values differ from one's own can be eye-opening and lead to a broader understanding of the world. This cultural exposure nurtures empathy, tolerance, and an ability to navigate the complexities of human relationships.
In the context of a nursing career, these qualities are invaluable. Nursing is a profession that demands sensitivity to the needs of diverse patient populations. Understanding and respecting various cultural practices can significantly enhance a nurse's ability to provide patient-centered care. For instance, a nurse who has experienced different cultural norms may be better equipped to communicate effectively, tailor care plans to individual preferences, and bridge potential gaps in understanding between healthcare providers and patients.
Furthermore, travel exposes individuals to diverse perspectives that challenge preconceived notions and broaden intellectual horizons. Stepping out of one's comfort zone and engaging with people from various walks of life fosters a more open-minded approach to problem-solving and critical thinking. In a nursing context, this adaptability is crucial, as healthcare environments are dynamic and multifaceted. Nurses who have been exposed to different perspectives are better equipped to navigate the complexities of patient care and work collaboratively in diverse healthcare teams.
Beyond cultural exposure and expanded perspectives, the environments encountered during travel contribute significantly to personal development. Exposure to different climates, landscapes, and living conditions promotes adaptability and resilience. These qualities are invaluable in a nursing career where challenges are diverse and unpredictable. Nurses who have faced and overcome obstacles in unfamiliar environments are better equipped to handle the unpredictable nature of healthcare settings.
The transformative power of travel is magnified when combined with service to others. Engaging in volunteer work or service-learning opportunities during travel amplifies the impact on personal development. For instance, a nurse who participates in medical missions in underserved communities gains not only clinical experience but also a profound sense of social responsibility and a deeper understanding of the social determinants of health.
In summation, travel has the potential to be a powerful catalyst for personal growth and development, especially when combined with service to others. Exposure to different cultures, perspectives, and environments nurtures qualities such as empathy, tolerance, adaptability, and resilience, which are invaluable in a nursing career. By learning from and engaging with diverse communities across the globe, nurses can enhance their ability to provide culturally competent and patient-centered care, ultimately contributing to their own personal development and the betterment of healthcare as a whole.

Living sustainably is a conscious and intentional choice that permeates every facet of my daily life. From the moment I wake up to the time I go to bed, I strive to make decisions that minimize my environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future. These intentional choices are not just about personal convenience; they reflect a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of human activities and their profound effects on the planet.
One of the primary intentional choices I make is in the realm of transportation. Instead of relying solely on conventional vehicles, I opt for sustainable alternatives whenever possible. Walking or biking short distances not only reduces my carbon footprint but also promotes a healthier lifestyle. When longer distances are involved, I prioritize public transportation or carpooling to decrease the number of individual vehicles on the road. By consciously selecting these options, I am actively contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the environmental impact of my daily commute.
In my home, energy consumption is another focal point of sustainability. I am mindful of turning off lights and electronic devices when not in use, utilizing energy-efficient appliances, and adjusting my thermostat to conserve energy. Simple yet intentional choices, such as using natural light during the day and investing in energy-efficient LED bulbs, collectively make a significant impact over time. By reducing my reliance on non-renewable energy sources, I am taking small steps towards a more sustainable energy future.
Waste management is an integral part of my commitment to sustainability. I strive to minimize single-use items in my daily life, opting for reusable alternatives like water bottles, shopping bags, and containers. Separating recyclables from non-recyclables is a routine habit, ensuring that materials have the opportunity to be repurposed rather than contributing to the growing problem of landfill waste. By actively participating in recycling programs and supporting initiatives that promote a circular economy, I am working towards a more sustainable approach to resource use and waste generation.
The intentional choices I make extend to the realm of food consumption. Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the most impactful decisions I've made to reduce my carbon footprint. The production of animal products, particularly meat, is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. Choosing plant-based alternatives not only minimizes these environmental impacts but also supports a more ethical and humane approach to food consumption. Additionally, I make an effort to buy locally sourced and seasonal produce, further reducing the carbon footprint associated with the transportation of goods.
Reducing my carbon footprint is not just about personal responsibility; it's a critical component of addressing the global climate crisis. The intentional choices I make in my daily life contribute to a collective effort to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. The urgency of this task cannot be overstated, as the consequences of unchecked climate change are far-reaching and affect ecosystems, economies, and communities worldwide.
By living sustainably, I am advocating for a future where the delicate balance between human activities and the environment is restored. The importance of reducing one's carbon footprint lies in the recognition that individual actions, when multiplied across communities and nations, have the power to shape a more sustainable and resilient planet. It's a recognition that our daily choices are not isolated events but interconnected threads weaving the fabric of a shared future. As I continue to make intentional choices in my daily life, I am not only reducing my environmental impact but actively contributing to the broader movement towards a more sustainable and harmonious coexistence with the planet we call home.

I became inspired to pursue a career in the medical field from a very young age. This inspiration began when I had heart surgery in elementary school. I remember the Cook Children's Hospital medical staff were helpful and supportive. Specifically, I remember a nurse named Stephanie who stuck by my side before and after the operation. She smiled and reassured me that everything was going to be okay. Stephanie comforted me with her words and held my hand. She was the bright light on this dim day. Stephanie calmed my fear and gave me the emotional support that inspired me to become a nurse. Nursing has been a big dream of mine since then.
I am in my senior year in high school and pursuing my dream of becoming a certified nursing assistant, CNA. Thankfully, through the career and technical education at the Keller Center for Advanced Learning, KCAL, I have found my calling to become a nurse. I have strong determination and empathy toward others, and my clinical instructors tell me I have an excellent bedside manner with my patients. I enjoy making people feel better. I have a passion and desire to support healthcare reform by improving the quality of life of our diverse and underserved population.
My dream for the future is to make an impact and help serve those in my community. A nursing career allows you to see people at their worst while assisting them to become their best. I am determined to achieve my dream of becoming a nurse at the University of Arkansas next fall 2023. I have a thirst for knowledge and the heart of a lion. The CNA program in high school has forever changed my life because, with this program, I have indeed found my calling as a nurse. Through the Career and Technology Education at Keller Advanced Learning Center, I have completed 50 hours of clinical practice as a certified nurse assistant at the hospital. I enjoyed every second of helping patients in the hospital and look forward to pursuing a nursing career.
I have a career goal to work in a neonatal intensive care unit. I want a nursing career in a level four neonatal intensive care unit, NICU. I want to advocate for free prenatal care and screening for pregnant women of all diverse populations. I want to lead others by working to improve patient care, teach healthy habits to the community, advocate for the underserved, offer emotional support, and improve families' lives by holding their hands and being there with them along their healthcare journey. I have adopted the motto, "Service (to others) above self." With service to others, I want to help advocate and change healthcare to ensure no disparities in receiving care exist in any community. To consider my nursing career successful, I want to make a difference in as many lives as possible.

I became inspired to pursue a career in the medical field from a very young age. This inspiration began when I had heart surgery in elementary school. Personal growth is one thing I look forward to at the University of Arkansas, such as learning to solve problems, becoming an independent thinker, and looking for ways to expand my critical thinking skills. I look forward to meeting new friends, learning new skills, gaining knowledge, being part of a community, and making lifelong connections. Am I nervous about leaving Texas to join the Razorback nation? The answer is yes, although it is a healthy excitement to learn new things about myself and from top professors. I look forward to growing mentally, spiritually, and individually in college.
First of all, I want to be mentally prepared for college. I am a goal-oriented person. My motivation comes from setting goals for myself and ensuring I am working towards my goals. Mentally, I want to maintain a school and life balance. In other words, I want to take personal free time to reset my focus and refresh my mind. Occasional personal time allows a healthy mental break from school to release and reset the mind. A refreshed mind allows for more clarity when studying. The personal time will also allow me to explore the University of Arkansas's activities, athletics, and theater.
Secondly, I want to exercise my mind and include physical exercise to stay healthy. Cardiovascular and weight training helps build up the release of serotonin levels in the body to benefit the mind and body. Serotonin is a hormone released during physical activity. I like to call this hormone the happy or motivating hormone. Serotonin helps boost energy and combats depression and anxiety. I already have a home exercise routine and plan on continuing this routine in college to help balance the stressful challenges I will face.
Lastly, I want to work on meditation and self-reflection to maintain a healthy soul, keeping faith and prayer to feed my soul. I grew up in Church and often heard the following saying, "do not worry about anything but pray for everything." I plan on using this saying in college to improve my soul and outlook.
In summation, I have a firm plan for college to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst any challenges. A strong foundation for staying healthy in college is the key to academic and personal success. Self-care is knowing you must maintain a plan to keep all three phases of yourself healthy. Staying centered and well-balanced is the key to flourishing in college and experiencing personal growth.

Mental health is a massive issue in the United States, and there are shocking statistics to prove it. When we consider that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 5 adults experience at least one mental health condition every year, it is hard to deny that we need to prioritize mental health awareness (CDC "About Mental Health"). In schools today, students have a rigorous testing curriculum and pressure to take all advanced placement or honors courses, causing enormous anxiety. Students are trying to conform to perfection. Schools may not realize the mental stress it causes for high school students. Therefore, one problem I would like to solve in my school is creating a mental health class to include positive coping and life skills. Making the mental health course mandatory for all first-year high school students will send them out into the world with the skills necessary to deal with the challenges they will face in life.
Mental illness and depression are overflowing among high school students, and some students turn to drugs to mask their depression and mental illness. When students take the mental health course, they can develop healthier coping mechanisms to reduce their depression. Partnering with community members to select and implement mental health awareness and monitoring prevention activities will ensure that the mental health course effectively prevents and reduces community violence and drug use.
Unfortunately, there tends to be a significant stigma attached to anything related to mental health. Therefore, schools must acknowledge reasonable mental health efforts and work to overcome the stigma by positively addressing mental health in the new mandatory course. Results from taking mental health courses would trickle down to improve communities as well. Schools and communities are in a symbiotic relationship. For example, if you can start a positive mental health change in high school students, it usually flows over to improve the overall mental health of the surrounding community. Students can share their healthy coping skills with their parents and the community. Mental health courses taught at the high school level will enhance student awareness and well-being, improving the community's recognition of mental health.
By implementing a mandatory elective on mental illness and healthy coping mechanisms, the school and community would see a positive effect in lowering crime, suicide, and drug use. Students in high school will learn how to manage stressful situations with healthy coping mechanisms instead of resorting to drugs to cope with depression. Certified counselors will create and implement the mental health course. Healthy coping skills will include when to walk away from stressful situations, relaxation techniques, engaging in physical activity, finding humor, reading, and finding self-awareness methods to know when to ask others for help. Maintaining positive mental health and treating mental health conditions is crucial to stabilizing constructive behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. Focusing on mental health care will increase productivity, enhance our self-image, and improve relationships.
Students should regularly grant themselves permission to tune in to themselves and consider their overall mental health to address their needs best, which is what the mandatory mental health course in high school will accomplish. Mental health awareness is one of the most pressing issues we are currently facing in America. Thus, the importance of good mental health ripples into everything we do, think, or say. Fighting the mental health stigma, providing support and resources to struggling individuals and their loved ones, and advocating for school course modification are all integral parts of mental health changes needed to improve schools and the community.

I am a seventeen-year-old high school senior, and my name is Megan Barker. My favorite color is pink, and my superpower is making people smile. My love for nursing started when I was born with a heart anomaly. I spent some time in the hospital when I was five years old to have heart surgery. In the process, I overcame my heart condition and found my love of nursing. The wonderful nurses inspired me with their human compassion. I will get my certified nursing assistant certificate in high school in May 2023. I enjoy helping people and have compassion for what they are going through. A nursing career allows you to see people at their worst while assisting them to become their best. One of the requirements for the certified nursing assistant program is going to nursing homes for high school clinical rotations to learn new skills. During clinical rotations, I love making the residents smile. I have an excellent bedside manner and strive to brighten the patients' day.
The clinical hours at nursing homes and hospitals confirm that I have chosen the correct career in the nursing field. I have a strong determination and empathy toward others, which drives my desire to support healthcare and improve my patients' lives. I love children and want to work in a neonatal/pediatric hospital. I remember how helpful the hospital staff was and supported me during my stay. Specifically, I remember a nurse named Stephanie, who stuck by my side before and after my operation. She smiled and reassured me that everything was going to be okay. Stephanie comforted me with her words and held my hand. She was the bright light on this dim day. Stephanie calmed my fear and gave me the emotional support as a patient that inspired me to become a nurse. My experience as a patient helps me understand the needs of pediatric patients. I know how to help comfort them and make them smile.
In the future, I want to continue my education and complete my nursing degree. I want to become a leader in the nursing profession and provide for myself and others while also making a difference in people's lives. To consider my life a success, I want to positively impact as many patients as possible and help advocate for better access to healthcare and eliminate health disparities. Working as a nurse at a children's hospital will allow me to care for children in the most critical time of their lives. Ultimately, I aspire to further my education and become a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners in the acute care units make decisions to save the smallest of patients' lives and make a difference in educating the community on the importance of preventive healthcare. I will pursue my education as a pre-nursing major at the University of Arkansas next fall semester and hope to return to Texas with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and work at the same hospital that cared for me during my heart surgery.

My mother has instilled into my soul the motto of giving back to the community with volunteer service hours. From my mother's inspiration, I know my life is not about material things but the service I give to improve the community.
One of my proudest accomplishments is overcoming my fear of fainting to give blood. After learning about a community-wide blood shortage, I wanted to give blood. My blood is the universal donor blood type, which means anyone can receive my blood to save their life. Giving blood may seem like an easy way to give back; however, it is tough for me to give blood as I usually faint when blood someone is drawing my blood.
Conquering my fear of giving blood is one of my proudest service moments. I worked to pre-hydrate and psyche myself up to gain the courage to give blood to Carter Bloodcare. Donated blood to Carter Bloodcare will be discarded if you do not finish the donation before fainting. I worked to distract myself and conquered my fear by completing the blood donor process to give a pint of blood. The blood I donated was in critically short supply for our community. I answered the call to service, overcame my fear, and now feel like a hero by giving blood to save lives. You see, it is in giving that we feel whole. Serving others is the best way to impact the community; however, it also moves my heart.
My dream for the future is to make an impact and help serve those in my community. Nurses are always giving and serving our community to improve healthcare. Through my service and volunteering, I found my calling in a career in the nursing profession. Nursing is constantly evolving and always needs more hands. A nursing career allows you to see people at their worst while helping them become their best. I am determined to achieve my dream of becoming a nurse at the University of Arkansas.
The scholarship award will help me begin nursing school and complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The scholarship money will help me become a nurse allowing me to repay the community. More specifically, I want to work to improve patient care, teach healthy habits to the community, advocate for the underserved, improve health literacy for individuals, offer emotional support, and improve families' lives along their healthcare journey. Our community has a nursing shortage, and I want to answer the call and enter the nursing profession to improve healthcare.

I was born with a unique heart condition, which helped shape my healthy diet and career path. As a five-year-old, I was diagnosed with a heart condition. The following summer was the first time I had experienced an ambulance ride, numerous EKG leads, and a room full of doctors and nurses. I had Supraventricular tachycardia, also known as SVT. This heart anomaly is an irregularly fast heartbeat or an arrhythmia that affects the heart’s upper chambers. My heart surgery was set and scheduled for December 2013 when I was in the second grade.
My heart condition improved my diet and lifestyle at an early age. I knew I had to take care of my heart and body through proper nutrition and exercise. I can tell a difference in my energy level when I eat a healthy plate of roasted vegetables. Even today as a healthy seventeen-year-old, I make sure I eat more of a plant-based diet. The plant-based diet helps protect my heart and improves my energy levels. Nutrition and nursing go hand in hand, without proper nutrition, the body cannot fight off infection. A proper plant-based diet gives one’s body added immunity to fight disease. Besides a healthy diet, I also make sure I get enough cardiovascular and weight training which improves serotonin levels to improve mental health. I want to continue with my healthy lifestyle in college as well by eating right, focusing on self-improvement, and cardiovascular exercise.
As my heart condition required surgery, I remember how supportive the Cook Children’s hospital staff played in my recovery. Specifically, I remember a nurse named Stephanie, who stuck by my side before and after my operation. Stephanie calmed my fear and gave me the emotional and nutritional support that inspired me to become a nurse. Nursing has been a big dream of mine since then. The scholarship award will help me get started in nursing school, so I can advocate and promote healthy lifestyles. The scholarship money will help me pay back to the community that helped me in my time of need. More specifically, I want to improve care, teach the community, advocate for more plant-based diets, improve healthy habits for individuals, offer emotional support, and overall improve the lives of families by holding their hands along their healthcare journey. I want to advocate for prenatal care and healthy eating for pregnant mothers. There is a nursing shortage in our community, and I want to answer the call and enter into the nursing profession to advocate for the importance of nutrition and exercise. I want to be a nurse who cares about their patients and promote a healthy lifestyle.

I am eager and looking forward to a new chapter in my life at the University of Arkansas as a freshman in the fall 2023 semester. This new chapter would not be possible without one incredible teacher and volleyball coach in high school, Coach Sterling. Coach Sterling is not only a great coach, but she is also an astonishing, kind, and motivating teacher. Ms. Sterling has significantly influenced me during high school and prepared me for college.
Coach Sterling is my AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, and volleyball coach. Coach Sterling tremendously influences all students, offering encouragement, finding class tutors, and genuinely wanting to improve student success. Coach Sterling helps prepare students to strive for, enroll, and succeed in higher education beyond high school. During my senior year, Coach Sterling's class, several times a month, required students to apply for colleges and scholarships. Once a student gets accepted to any college, she buys the student a cake to help them celebrate. Coach Sterling finds new opportunities in the classroom and court to gain experience from success and failure. Coach Sterling makes more than athletes excel; she makes them independent. She encourages mental toughness while maintaining a positive mindset.
Coach Sterling also encourages giving back to the community with volunteer service hours. She shows that your life is not always about the material things you have in life, but the time you give to help serve others. We packed blessing bags for the homeless community during her class and delivered them. Coach instilled in me a great work ethic and to take pride in my work. Coach Sterling works to put you in challenging situations, motivating me to rise to the occasion. For example, if you were having an issue with your service on the volleyball court, she would put you in to serve with the game on the line. She knew you would rise to the occasion, and her confidence in you helped build my own self-confidence.
The courses taught by Coach Sterling work on polishing the critical thinking skills necessary for leadership positions in life after high school. One example in her class is assigning each student as a project leader at different times. The project leader has to give roles to other students knowing their strengths and weaknesses in organizing the project, and then the leader has to present the solution in front of the class. This assignment helps students organize a team, assign roles and become a leader to deliver the final speech presentation.
Lessons learned from Coach Sterling will be etched in my heart forever. Coach has had the most significant impact on learning life lessons and has inspired me to attend college to achieve my dream of becoming a nurse.

Home of the brave and land of the free is the best definition of what it means to be American. Freedom to pursue your dreams and the land of opportunity. Freedom and the protection of individual rights, life, liberty, education, and the pursuit of happiness. Being an American means you have the opportunity if you have the drive and desire to improve and create the best version of yourself. Nothing should hold an American back, not ethnicity, religion, economic status, or gender. America is about being free, even speaking out against what is racial or religious oppression. Americans are free to choose their pathway.
Freedom is what makes our country great. Americans are free to choose which opportunities to pursue and achieve a brighter future, even if they started with a low socioeconomic status. Americans have the do not quit attitude, such as the old saying "if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again." Americans can withstand a challenge and work through it to solve the problem, to improve every aspect of life. Americans are free to become an entrepreneur, an educator, medical professionals, salespeople, run a company, an athlete or work trades, just to name a few. Being an American is an attitude of seeing hope when things seem hopeless. Being an American is helping each other when life gets hard. Being an American is giving back to those in need, and offering assistance so everyone has hopes for a brighter future. In the United States of America, society is living in a land where we are encouraged to find and follow our dreams, and embrace our diversity. Whatever we dream, Americans can conquer anything in life, as long as we see it through with a great work ethic and a don’t give-up attitude. I like to say if you can dream it, you can achieve it. In my case, I have a dream of becoming a nurse. I am following my dream to college next year. It is not going to be easy, however, I have American dedication and work hard ethic to achieve my goal of becoming a nurse.
Americans are free thinkers, given the opportunity to have choices in life, which allows them to follow their vision. We all start with the privilege of an education, learning what we enjoy doing in life, which allows us our freedom to work towards these goals. The American grit is working hard to find opportunities in life that make you enjoy finding and achieving your dreams. I am proud to be an American and live in a world where anything is possible.

Title: To beat all odds By: Megan Barker
The rapid beat I can feel,
like a fish fighting on a real,
this is all surreal.
I am only five,
this is the time to thrive,
I want to stay alive.
I always try my best,
but all I can feel is this thing beating rapidly in my chest,
I just want to rest.
It comes and goes at a random pace,
it causes fear on my face,
to cure me is now a race.
The doctors try and find the beat,
while I take my seat,
not trying to stand on my feet.
Finally, the answer to this mystery,
it did require my medical history,
although surgery is necessary for victory.
The hospital is supposed to reassure,
this time I am not so sure,
how can I endure,
a surgery seems so premature.
With my family by my side,
there is no need to hide,
only God can guide,
and only He can decide.
With my faith, I will be brave,
I move my hand back and forth to wave,
now for the surgeons to save.
The surgery went as planned,
now when my heart is scanned,
my heart is in rhythm like a band.

I was born with a unique heart condition. I saw how scared my mother was about my heart surgery. I have watched my single mother struggle to work two jobs to make ends meet. She has expressed how she wished I could have a better life. I want to become a nurse to lessen the burden on my mother by providing for myself. My mother works extremely hard to ensure I have a better opportunity in life. My mother got a job working at the hospital, always showing compassion and helping improve public health. She works twelve-hour shifts and leads by example to show me the value of hard work.
My mother has inspired me to become a member of the healthcare community. I want to contribute as my mom has all these years. I have seen firsthand as a patient what heart patients go through. I was in second grade when I had heart surgery. The Mom's strength inspires me, she is a single mother working two jobs to better my life. I want to attend the University of Arkansas and complete the nursing program. I want to work in a neonatal intensive care unit as a nurse and become an advocate for prenatal care. The nursing program is my calling. This is where my traits and compassion can be helpful to and give back to my community the most. Texas is what I have known to be for all of my life. I have been active with my school and the community outside of the classroom.
A career in the medical field is constantly evolving and always needs more hands. A Nursing career allows you to see people at their worst while helping them become their best. This scholarship will alter my life forever and allow me to pursue my dreams of becoming a nurse. After achieving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Arkansas, my career goal is to find employment at a level 4 neonatal intensive care unit, NICU. I want to advocate for free prenatal care for pregnant women. Working as a nurse in the NICU will allow me to care for premature infants in the most critical time of their lives. After working in the NICU, I aim to become a charge nurse in the NICU, helping with all forms of complicated nursing care for infants. Eventually, I aspire to become a nurse practitioner. Nurse practitioners in the critical care units make decisions to save the smallest of patients' lives with heart anomalies and make a difference in educating the community on the importance of prenatal care and screenings.
Awarding me this scholarship will make a significant contribution to my goal of becoming a nurse and taking care of patients with congenital heart defects. This financial assistance would allow me to move to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to attend the University of Arkansas, and live in the dorms. I want to make my mother proud, although I do not want to burden her financially. I want to be a force of strength as my mother displays. Please consider me for this scholarship.
