My name is Megan Asbeck, and I am currently a senior at Fairview High School. I have a perfectionist mindset, a tough demeanor, a competitive spirit, and a giving heart. Throughout my time at Fairview Schools, I have never had anything other than an A. Growing up with parents who emphasized the importance of education above all things has helped me comprehend the importance of learning. Doing my best, working hard to reach my goals, and understanding time management were skills my parents instilled in me at an early age. I have used these skills to maintain a 4.0 Grade Point Average, always making the High Honor Roll list, and currently ranked 1st out of 28 classmates. Being a two-sport athlete all of my high school career, actively participating in Honor Society and Science Club, volunteering whenever I can, and keeping up with four to six core classes - including dual credit for college courses- has been challenging. Still, my work ethic and determination have made it manageable.
Receiving an education has consistently been important to me. I have always loved learning, with science being my favorite subject. Growing up, my mother was the office secretary for Doctor Brett Bennion, an Ear-Nose-Throat Doctor, and a Head and Neck Surgeon at Sidney Health Center for 16 years. While growing up, I often found myself in Doctor Bennion's office with my mother. This allowed me to experience all of the behind-the-scenes action. From patients checking in, nurses preparing rooms, Doctor Bennion overviewing patient charts, and much more. These experiences made my love for science even stronger and has pushed me to pursue a degree in Biology.
I have significant goals for my future. My plans after high school include attending Dickinson State University (DSU) in Dickinson, North Dakota, to obtain my undergraduate degree in biology. I will study under the pre-medical learning track provided at Dickinson State University. Upon completion of my pre-medical biology degree from DSU, I intend on applying for and attending medical school. There I will obtain a Doctor of Medicine degree to become a Dermatologist and further my proficiency.
After fulfilling my educational endeavors, my plans include moving back to Eastern Montana and using the knowledge I gain to contribute to my rural community. I will achieve this aspiration of mine by owning and operating a medical practice, where I will offer a variety of dermatology-related services to treat patients from the surrounding areas. Hopefully, I will be able to expand my practice and hire other Dermatologists, Physician Assistants, and Aestheticians to amplify the services being provided. My sole intention is to supply a new medical opportunity for my rural community, Richland County. This will be extremely impactful. No longer will families have to travel many miles for a specific doctor. I hope upon my return to Richland County, I will be able to provide a convenient medical experience for my loving community that has taught me many lessons and truly shaped me into the person I am today.
Bold Helping Others Scholarship
When I am not focusing on academics or participating in sports, you will find me volunteering around the community. Currently, I have 134 service hours and counting. I have helped the Friday Night Lights Cornhole Tournament for three years now, doing any task asked of me. Some of these include gathering sponsorships, collecting cornhole boards, and restocking concessions. I have also participated in Clean-Up Days, fundraisers, and donations. Just this year, I organized a Fire Safety day for elementary students to learn how to act in the case of a fire. With my father being a volunteer fireman in Fairview, I knew how important it was to inform children on all things fire-related. Most recently, I helped raise money for the Waller Family to ease the financial burden of their many hospital visits. I did this by putting on a “Miracle Minute” where I passed buckets around the gymnasium during a basketball game to raise over $2,000. The following week, I organized another fundraiser for the Wallers, selling Italian Sodas. In one week, I raised over $900.
I am a natural-born leader always fighting for the greater good. I have over 130 hours of volunteer work. Volunteering has shown me the effect generosity has on other people’s lives. It has taught me that making someone else’s day is far more rewarding than any personal recognition and awards. The happiness being exerted and the smile presented on the faces of those who just received a donation, fuels my generosity and happiness. The majority of the teenagers volunteering view it as a chore, but I see it as an opportunity. An opportunity to learn, gain confidence and experience, and give back to my community. Volunteering will continue to be a crucial part of my life.
