Kerry Kennedy Life Is Good Scholarship
My career of choice is Social work. I am very passionate about it because all my life I have always strived to help other people. My biggest goal when I become a social worker is to be able to accommodate families and be able to advocate for those that aren't able to. I currently work in health care as a CNA and although that job is very rewarding too, I feel like I can achieve more and be more successful being a social worker. Being a CNA is very hands on, whereas social work is more of an office based profession. Social work entails a lot of paperwork and writing.
I am very interested in social work that deals with mental health and addiction. As someone who has struggled with mental health, I know how are it can be to deal with so I believe that having my own personal experience will help others as well. As far as the addiction side of it, I haven't personally gone through addiction myself however, I have watched a few of the people I love most struggle with this disease. Even though I may not have experienced it myself, I have witnessed first hand how it effects a person and how it changes them. I think that is why I am so fascinated by it because I have seen how it changes the neurological ways and how harsh the damage can be. It can change people in ways that one would never imagine, and if I can become and advocate for addicts and help them along the recovery process, then I am all for it.
Being a single mom of 3 young boys, I wake up every day and I say to myself "this is for them". Everything I do is for them, and although this is the career that I want to be successful in, I want my kids to be proud of me after I get my degree and are able to help other people. I have sacrificed a lot of personal things such as friendships, and going out and having fun with friends because I am so focused on the end result. I have also lost out on time with my kids because most of the time I am studying and doing school work. I do still manage my time well and I have learned to multitask with school work and being there for the kids.
