My life Goals are to be great in all aspects of life. I also want to be someone who everyone comes to when they need help. My passion is to help other no matter their situation or background. That’s what led me into the criminal justice major. I also want to kill the narrative that all cops are racist , or just bad. Which is very much false. Everything I’ve ever received in life was always worked for nothing was ever giving to me. I think that’s what make me different from a lot of kids in my generation . No one is really determined like I am to have a successful life. I’ve always had to take the extra leap in everything. That’s why working hard for opportunities is just nothing new to me. I’m willing to work hard 24/7 for what I want. I’ve learned in life at an early age that things are worked for. You can’t just pray and ask God for it you have to work for it also . Another thing I’m a firm believer in what God can do. God has did a lot for me in my 20 years of life. He is definitely a miracle worker. To who may read this I just want to pray for you and pray the coverage over you and your family and friends and know that God loves you and will accept you with open arms no matter what you do. One thing about me I can say is I can lose it all and get it back again with a smile on my face . I’m just that type of person . No matter my circumstances I still walk around with a smile on my face . That’s why others love being around me ,because I’m such a carrying person . I’m also very humble I don’t look down on anyone . I just love being that person people depend on

Alexis Potts Passion Project Scholarship
Winner My passion and heart have always been in basketball. Over the years, basketball has taken me to many places and showed me a lot of things I did not know about myself. Basketball has not just taken me all around the world but has also impacted me. It impacted me a lot in ways I can't even explain. One thing I can say is it forced me out of my shell and called upon me to be a leader. I used to be a kid who didn't speak up for himself, always quiet in the back. One thing about being a leader is you cannot be quiet and soft-spoken. Those who follow need to be able to hear and understand you. I've always wanted to be a leader but never had the speaking ability to voice the next steps and things of that sort like a leader should, but basketball helped a lot. As many may know to be a great basketball team, you must be vocal. There is a statistic that 84 percent of teams with a great vocal leader win more games than a leader who does not talk to those who follow.
Basketball has also impacted me spiritually. Basketball is the starting point of where my relationship with God started. Although I love basketball so much, there have been many times when I didn't have the strength to keep going or had bad thoughts. One thing for sure is after every bad day, bad thought, or bad game, every time I sat and prayed, God was always there for me no matter the situation. It's crazy because, during this basketball journey, there were times when I completely lost faith in him and didn't trust him. Even after I doubted him and did not trust him, he was still there for me. Every time someone asks me where did your relationship with God start? I would say basketball, and they laugh because who would have thought? It's crazy how my passion for basketball helped me find a relationship with God. I used to wonder when I would get my calling from God or when God would let me know when he heard me.
Last but not least, basketball has impacted me by shaping my heart. It might sound crazy at first, but it is true. Basketball taught me to have a giving and nice heart. When I played in the AAU tournaments, we would do nice things like feed the homeless and give back to those in need. Seeing those kids and adults with smiles on their faces and tears of joy is the best thing to watch in my eyes. Those times shaped my heart and showed me how blessed I am. I learned it is the little things that matter. We really never know what people are going through, so that's why it's important to be nice all the time, no matter how your day goes.
Jameela Jamil x I Weigh Scholarship
These days I think everyone needs someone to be there for them or show them that they care for them. We never know what a person is going through or how much they appreciate us for just caring for them. There is a saying that it doesn't cost much to be nice. This is the motto I go by because it inspired me to be nice to others, do with my heart, and not expect anything in return. There were times when I was down on myself because of basketball and just a lot going on. That one person who did a nice deed and just checked on me changed my whole day around. So I know from experience what being nice to others can do.
To go on more, I go to my local recreation center almost every day and play basketball with many people from our community. There's always a lot going on, from jump houses, Zumba days, dance teams, and much more. Almost every day of the week, there are a lot of kids and adults playing basketball. Adults and kids know me in the community because of basketball. So just having that basketball name is a big help. During my time at the rec, there are always some kids playing by themselves because they don't have any friends or older siblings. Some kids are shy, to themselves like I am, and sometimes want someone to reach out. I've impacted my community by playing with kids, showing them how to play basketball, and being nice to them, showing them that I care.
It means a lot to me when kids call my phone, looking forward to me coming to the recreation center and helping them and playing with them. One thing I have also noticed about being nice and helping the young kids is that it's like a domino effect. They carry the being nice to others trait and helpful skills on to their peers or other people in our community. This is great because it can limit chaos and many more in the community. I think we can all agree that in our world today, some niceness could help. This has impacted me a lot and taught me a lot. If you had asked me before the summer started if I would be doing this, I would probably say no. I've always been quiet and just kept to myself. I didn't realize how much it would impact my community and the kids in it until I started doing it. This also helped me be more vocal and become more vocal with other people who are not family. Before this summer, I used to struggle so much with talking to other people because it made me so nervous. The kids in my community and adults helped me without even knowing. I would choose that over any reward. Never did I think playing with kids in my community would make such a big impact on them and me.
