First and foremost, I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of your father, thank you for this opportunity in his honor. I am pursuing a career in automotive repair/custom work. I became very passionate in the field as a young boy with my cousin who lived with my family. I looked up to him and we would work on the family cars together, no matter how small or how big of a job he would ask me if I wanted to help him. When I got my truck at 16, it did not run and he was right there with me helping me get it fixed up. Additionally, I grew up a lot around car culture around my friends and neighbors. In Reno we have a two-week-long event in July-August called "Hot August Nights" where hot rods and classic vehicles took over the town, this was and still is my favorite event to go to and admire the pure craftsmanship and details put into the show cars. After I graduate from Universal Technical Institute I plan on coming back to Reno, obtaining an ASE certificate, and securing a job at a Toyota/Lexus Dolan dealership. From there I will work my way up to achieving ASE master technician status. I do not plan on staying at a dealership for the entirety of my career at this point; I eventually wish to open my own customs shop where a small crew of 1-2 technicians and I perform specialized services on vehicles ( i.e lowering, engine swaps, exhausts, etc..) I want to make customers' vehicles look and perform better than they ever imagined they could while at the same time being my own boss. When you grow up where I grew up, in Sun Valley, every day can be considered to be overcoming adversity. In the low-income parts that I grew up in, drugs, homelessness, and violence are commonplace. I find pride in myself in that although this is what has surrounded me since I was a baby growing up on top ramen with my mother and multiple other family members that lived with us in my grandparents three bedroom trailer, I still have bigger dreams. I look around at those I grew up with little to no aspirations besides what they have going on for them in the streets. Not too many come from here and even attend any kind of post-secondary education, even my school's recruiter said he only sees a maximum of two students from my school yearly whereas he will get at usually ten more from wealthier schools in the city. I believe that me overcoming stereotypes and chasing my aspirations is how I have overcome adversity.
