Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
My baby sister died six days after she was born. I remember just sitting beside her NICU, watching her chest rise and fall, and each breath was so precious, so fragile. Her tiny fingers curled around mine, and in those moments it felt like the world stopped with us, holding its breath.
When she passed away, I felt that vacuum of air from the room. The silence was deafening. The house, once filled with great excitement and high hopes all of a sudden became very empty. Almost everything was quiet, her baby clothes hung, and all our dreams for her just seemed to evaporate into the morning mist. Grief burrowed under our skin, weighing our chests, making breathing heavy and every moment uncertain.
I found myself wrestling with so many questions I never considered in the wake of losing her. What is important in life? How do you keep going when your heart is broken? Her short life made me realize very well how fragile and precious our time here is. I had a shifted perspective, with new urgency and clarity. I began appreciating the small things in life: my family's laughter, the warmth of a hug, and the beauty of a sunset. Through this, I have learned to appreciate the people I love, knowing our time is never guaranteed.
My family held me together during those depressing days. We depended on one another, with our shared sorrow providing some strength in our love for each other. My parents, going through their heartbreak, managed to hold us all together. We cried over those little moments we shared, finding comfort in each other's presence. This brought us so much closer than I thought it could and taught me how irreplaceable family is, to be there for one another no matter what happens.
But it also affected my dreams and goals so much. I was quite interested in science and biology, intrigued by the mysteries of life. After losing her, that turned from passion into drive-beating: making a difference, understanding what those complexities are that lead to such heartbreak, and preventing other families from having to endure the same pain. I would like to work in a field where I can make some difference in medical advancement, whereby I can be part of something saving lives and giving other families a chance to hold theirs close.
But this loss taught me about the strength of love, the power of empathy, and the keyword—kindness. In our black days, the help and support of friends, neighbors, and even strangers, were a lifeline on its own. Small gestures—a dinner left on our doorstep, a kind note, an embracing hug—became beacons of light in the fog of our grief. It taught me that small favors can mean everything in the world to someone fighting for their life. That is something that has been etched in my mind: being able to comfort and help others, just as people did for us.
My little sister lived such a short life, but in her limited time, she has left in my heart marks that I shall carry until eternity. She taught me how to live purposefully, fighting precisely for what was worth fighting for, and respecting each moment. She reminds me to always try and leave a great legacy here on earth. Despite her short time with us, it has changed me forever. Though hers was a short-lived life, it was of meaning that it even now inspires me to live up to it – to live a life in which I won't let the people I love go, to struggle for a finer world, to shine light into it.

I know that it is essential for science’s future to be informed by more than one voice, especially given the fact that I am an African American male and Muslim.
Forensic science is my favorite due to its combination of biology, chemistry and technology. The choice of this major was made with an expectation that I would have to unravel intricate crime scenes and solve difficult puzzles behind them, which makes forensic science attractive for me. However, STEM covers everything because it enables us not only to solve complex problems but also explore new worlds.
Being Black and Muslim male, I understand how few voices from underrepresented groups are present among people working in STEM disciplines. I am going to be an example of a student who is willing to open up any wrong ideas or stereotypes against other people in the area for study such as STEM. My aim is that through being successful in whatever profession I decide to take up other fellow Muslims will learn from how hard it seems for them too. To achieve this there must be unity within diversity meaning there must be multiple perspectives which are developed both across directions of sight and inside the limits science can go.

Morgan Stem Diversity in STEM Scholarship

Frantz Barron Scholarship
I have had a tough journey through my early years as a black Muslim. It has been about resilience, consistency and rock in trying to rise above everything. Therefore, being at the crossroads of race, religion and adolescence on a multi-racial yet complex societal landscape has made me who I am today.
While growing up, I had to face stereotypes and misconceptions regarding my race and religion also. This was an inaccurate image created by the media that I had to refute it. Instead of giving into these biases though, I promoted learning as an essential weapon against ignorance. For example; discussing about my heritage with others or explaining some of the values in Islam which would make them know us better if they knew very little about us.
Moreover, being a black Muslim teenager means confronting systemic inequalities head-on. For instance racial profiling against members of my community or constant fear from Islamophobia is part of everyday life now. But those obstacles have turned into chances for me to become more involved in society – joining advocacy groups or participating local projects aimed at addressing injustices around us. In this regard, my goal is to contribute towards collective efforts geared towards breaking down structural barriers while promoting inclusivity.
Overcoming adversity does not only deal with managing others’ perceptions but also self-acceptance internally too. It was difficult because there was always this societal pressure telling me who I should be versus trying not lose my cultural background together with religious identity which proved impossible task; however learning that being real starts within oneself begins making you strong; so embracing myself gave enough strength to stand tall even amid adversities faced.
Another thing that kept me going through thick and thin is education resilience wise; surpassing academically; I try defying stereotypes as well as challenging expectations placed upon black Muslim girls like me. Acquisition positions knowledge does not just enable me dismantle myths related but also put forth something good in my society.
Likewise my faith has acted as a source of both solace and fortitude. Being an Islamic believer who strongly believes in perseverance as well as community; compassion within it can’t be compared to anything else. Whenever I face hardships, therefore turning towards prayers plus teachings provided by this religion have always guided me thus giving sense purpose while committing myself towards justice.
Therefore; ultimately I am a young black Muslim teenager who has used education to overcome adversity, activism, self-acceptance and prayer enriched faith. Inside every difficulty lies an opportunity hence growth coupled with resilience from all challenges faced so far has made me stronger not only for myself but also deep commitment towards making positive contributions into diverse fabric that makes up America today.
