Marvellous Osunde, a graduate of the class of '22, hails from Nigeria and successfully immigrated to the United States, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Driven by a profound aspiration to contribute to the healthcare sector, She aims to serve underrepresented communities as a physician. Her passion for this calling stems from the recognition of the pervasive disparities in medicine that result in limited access to affordable healthcare. As a woman of color and African descent, Marvellous is acutely aware of the challenges and fears surrounding equitable healthcare provision.
Growing up in Nigeria, she bore witness to the struggles endured by the Nigerian medical system. The inadequate healthcare received by impoverished Nigerians often result in loss of life. With only a handful of adequate healthcare facilities situated in major cities, impoverished individuals faced tremendous obstacles in accessing the care they desperately needed. Her immediate community, laden with skepticism, believes that quality healthcare is unattainable for impoverished immigrants like themselves.
Marvellous's driving ambition is to establish trust between underserved populations and the medical profession. She aims to raise awareness, particularly among recently arrived immigrants and her own family, about the availability of patient-centric healthcare. She strives to serve as a model of excellence in addressing the unique needs of marginalized communities.

As the oldest child in my family, I faced immediate responsibilities upon entering the United States. We had moved to the USA just as I was about to enroll in a university in Nigeria. However, due to limited funds, I had to quickly secure a job to support my family's financial needs. Taking on the role of a cashier at McDonald's, I found myself juggling work hours and striving to excel in my studies. Unfortunately, the combination of financial insecurity and an overwhelming workload had a detrimental impact on my academic performance. My grades began to decline significantly by my second year of college.
Initially, I underestimated the seriousness of my situation and believed I could catch up later. However, as my third year approached, I was still struggling to keep up. I had a strong desire to transfer from the community college to a four-year university to pursue a competitive Bachelor of Science degree that would position me for medical school. The initial challenges of adapting to a new environment, balancing work and education, and the lack of a support network took a toll on my mental well-being. I now realize that seeking help and guidance during that time could have significantly reduced my stress levels.
However, I persevered and learned valuable lessons along the way. I discovered the importance of prioritizing my time effectively and efficiently managing multiple responsibilities. Eventually, I successfully transferred to the University of California, Riverside (UCR), and I made a conscious effort to maintain a healthier balance between my job, classes, and personal well-being. This experience taught me the significance of seeking assistance when needed and the transformative power of effective time management.
Looking ahead, I am driven by the desire to leverage my experiences and personal growth to make a positive impact on my community. Through my own journey of overcoming adversity, I have developed empathy and a strong sense of compassion for individuals facing similar challenges. In the future, I aim to contribute to my community by offering support and guidance to those who may be navigating difficult circumstances.
Specifically, I aspire to establish mentorship programs or initiatives that provide a platform for individuals to seek advice, share their struggles, and receive guidance. By sharing my own experiences and lessons learned, I hope to inspire and empower others to overcome obstacles, whether they are related to education, career advancement, or personal growth. I am passionate about fostering an environment where individuals feel comfortable seeking help and understand the value of community support.
Additionally, I intend to actively participate in community organizations that focus on providing resources and opportunities to underprivileged individuals. By leveraging my own experiences and knowledge, I hope to contribute to initiatives that address financial insecurity, education disparities, and mental health support. I firmly believe that by uplifting and supporting our communities, we can create a positive ripple effect that leads to lasting change and improved well-being for all.
In summary, my personal journey of overcoming adversity has shaped my perspective and instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and compassion. I plan to utilize my experiences and personal growth to help others facing similar challenges by offering guidance, establishing mentorship programs, and actively participating in community initiatives. Through these endeavors, I aspire to contribute to the well-being and advancement of my community, empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and achieve their full potential.

In my perspective, selflessness goes beyond the mere act of prioritizing the needs and well-being of others over one's immediate concerns. It encompasses demonstrating genuine kindness, compassion, and empathy towards others, while actively contributing to their welfare without expecting anything in return. It is important to acknowledge that selflessness does not advocate neglecting one's well-being or disregarding self-care. Rather, it emphasizes striking a delicate balance that recognizes the value of both the self and others, while placing the needs of others at the forefront when appropriate. Selfless actions are driven by an authentic concern for the welfare and happiness of others, reflecting a profound sense of empathy and interconnectedness with the broader community.
Throughout my engagement in clinical work at the hospital from November 2019 to April 2021, I had the privilege of rotating through various departments, gaining diverse experiences and encounters. One particular rotation led me to the GI lab, where my responsibility was to prepare an elderly man for a colonoscopy. Unfortunately, he had unintentionally forgotten to take his anxiety medication before the procedure, resulting in an unexpected anxiety attack while we were engaged in conversation.
Swiftly recognizing the gravity of the situation, I immediately alerted the nurse while concurrently employing various strategies to calm the patient. Employing diversion tactics, I skillfully steered our conversation towards alternative topics, creating an atmosphere that was soothing and comforting within the confines of the hospital environment. It became glaringly apparent to me the criticality of providing reassurance and safeguarding the patient's overall well-being. Maintaining a composed demeanor, I offered unwavering support and reassurance, playing an instrumental role in helping him gradually overcome his nervousness.
This particular incident left a mark on my understanding of the significance of preparedness in addressing unforeseen events and the genuine care required to support individuals in distress. By assuming the role of a compassionate and comforting presence, I was able to earn the patient's trust, creating an environment conducive to his emotional well-being. In the aftermath of the procedure, the patient expressed profound gratitude for my unwavering support during that challenging moment, underscoring the impact of selfless acts.
From this profound exemplification, I have gleaned that embodying selflessness extends far beyond the surface level. It necessitates consistently showcasing kindness and compassion, as evidenced by the continuous reassurance I provided to the patient throughout his ordeal. Moreover, it entails actively listening with an open mind, fostering an environment where individuals can freely express themselves without the fear of judgment. By dedicating one's time and efforts to serving the community, it becomes possible to instill a sense of hope in those enduring challenging circumstances. Reflecting on these transformative experiences, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to partake in such meaningful endeavors and for the invaluable lessons they have bestowed upon me along my journey.
In conclusion, embodying selflessness requires a genuine commitment to prioritizing the needs and well-being of others, driven by kindness, compassion, and empathy. It involves actively contributing to the welfare of others without expecting anything in return while maintaining a balanced approach that recognizes the importance of self-care. Through my volunteering experience at the hospital, particularly the incident in the GI lab, I have come to understand the profound impact of selflessness in providing support and reassurance to those in need. These experiences have reinforced my dedication to fostering a sense of hope and empathy within the community.

Almost a decade ago, the seed of my aspiration to become a medical doctor was planted. As a curious child who loved to play, I often faced consequences when I played for extended periods, experiencing persistent coughs, respiratory problems, and high body temperatures. Growing up in Nigeria, seeking medical care was not common for my family. Instead, we relied on nearby pharmacists for diagnoses and prescriptions. However, my recurring health issues, misdiagnoses, and inadequate treatments fueled my desire to enter the medical field. This essay explores my aspirations, passion for medicine, the books I have read, and the social and charitable activities that have shaped me into the person I am today.
My own experiences with undiagnosed respiratory issues and eczema as a child and teenager sparked my curiosity and ignited my passion for pursuing a medical career. I was determined to understand the root causes of these ailments and find better treatments. The lack of access to proper medical care and the prevalence of misdiagnoses in my community drove me to seek knowledge and skills that could make a difference in the lives of underserved individuals like myself.
Through my first clinical experience in Nigeria, I witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by the underserved in my community who lacked access to medical care. This eye-opening experience further solidified my commitment to addressing the healthcare disparities that plague these communities. Volunteering at the Riverside Community Hospital in the United States allowed me to engage in clinical research and have direct patient-to-doctor contact. This experience brought me a sense of fulfillment and reinforced my desire to provide assistance and support to those in need.
As I delved into clinical research, I discovered a vast body of medical information that remains inaccessible to the general public due to complex medical terminology. This realization prompted me to bridge the gap between medical knowledge and public understanding. I am currently working on conveying medical data in a more accessible manner to ensure that patients and the general public can make informed decisions about their health.
My pursuit of a medical education provides me with an opportunity to deepen my understanding of the biological processes of human development, with a particular focus on child development. I eagerly anticipate honing my critical thinking skills and acquiring the knowledge necessary to serve the underserved in my community. Medical school lays a strong foundation for me to address the healthcare needs of marginalized populations and make a meaningful impact on their lives.
My journey in pursuing a career in medicine stems from a combination of personal experiences, a desire to address healthcare disparities, and a commitment to empowering individuals through education. My encounters with misdiagnoses and inadequate treatments have fueled my curiosity and passion to become a medical doctor. Engaging with underserved communities and participating in clinical research has deepened my understanding of the challenges they face and reinforced my determination to make a positive difference. As I embark on my medical education, I eagerly anticipate the knowledge and skills I will acquire to better serve those in need and contribute to building a more equitable healthcare system.
