I am a proud mother of a 26-year-old Autistic son and a 25-year-old Gifted and Talented daughter. Being a single mother with a child on both ends of the spectrum was a challenge, to say the least. On March 15, 2021, my entire life was turned upside down! I went to work that morning and by dark, I was in the hospital to be informed that I had Colon Cancer 4B. My whole world came crumbling down in front of my eyes. All I saw was dying and what would happen to my children. I had to undergo 3 feet of my colon, both my ovaries removed, and then 6 months of intense chemotherapy. While recovering from surgery and chemotherapy, I took the time to reflect on what was important to me. First and foremost, living life to the fullest. Unfortunately, I was terminated by my company while I was on medical leave due to not being able to fulfill my job duties. At first, I was angry but it took some time to realize one door must close so another may open. God has a reason for everything that happens! I decided to finish my Business Degree, something I had been putting off for 30 years. So I took my daughter's advice and began my journey toward my B.A. in Business. I am currently proud to say I am cancer-free, a full-time college student, and have a career as an Administration Manager. Am I afraid that cancer may come back? Yes! But I will continue to live as though it won't. I want to take my experience with cancer and with returning to college after 30 years to make a better life for myself and make a difference in the Glamping Resort World.

I see major problems with our world but I also see an amazing planet. I would like to start "Hand Up Not Hand Out". This would be a special kind of homeless shelter/food bank. I know there are so many homeless shelters and food banks in our world but they are all lacking in some way or another. They leave out the most important aspect. Being Kind! If someone is down on their luck they do not need you to look down on them. Help them to find work, clothes, and a place to stay.
Don't just put a Band-Aid on it and think it's all good. You must teach a person how to fish not just feed them.
A caterpillar must struggle inside the cocoon to become a butterfly but the rain and the sun help. Take the time to shelter them but then sit down and work out some realistic goals. Are they ready to go back to work? Are they able to live alone? For a person to stay there they must be willing to try. It is not a hand out it is a hand up! Getting a job is not just asking for a job, it's learning how to interview, how to ethically work and so much more. Some of these individuals need direction because they are so lost! The endless possibilities are there. They just don't know where to start. We could have classes to teach them how to use a computer. How to dress professionally. I was thinking it would be good to have classes on making healthy meals as well. Have workshops where we act out an interview: how to dress, sit, answer questions, etc.
An idea I have been working on is helping older people go back to school to finish their degrees or start one...just like me. There is financial aid out there they just do not know to apply for it. That is where I come in. I could help them pick a school and help with FASFA. Also teaching someone how to care for themselves emotionally, spiritually and physically is huge.
This is going to require a lot of money to start as well as grants from the local and state offices. With Covid as bad as it is there would be a limit of how many can stay and social distancing is required.
This is where you come in. There has to be a place for this, employees or volunteers, computers, etc. I can not do this alone and could use the help. I am trying to finish my degree in Business Management so I can move forward. With your help, I will make this dream come true!
I wish everyone had the opportunity to better themselves but for this to happen someone must step up and speak. I am that person! I have been homeless and hungry. I have wondered where my next meal is gonna come from. Enough is Enough! Let us make our world a better place... TOGETHER!
BJB Scholarship
My name is Diane.
Community means family. Plain and simple.
I am 50 years old and I have been on both ends of the spectrum of financial hardship. The end where you wonder where your next meal is gonna come from and the end where you are deciding where to go out to eat tonight. Having said that I understand what my community needs better than most. I am also a survivor of Colon Cancer Stage 4B and that also has enlighten me to my communities needs.
So lets start with the being poor. As I have lived through it as a child and then as an adult I relied there needs to be more awareness of families going hungry. I am planning on setting up a food bank with various clothes and staples as well for my community. There is a food bank in Bellmead but it lacks on so many levels. The way you are treated when you are that low can make or break you. Hand Up not Hand Out!
As a cancer survivor I am dedicating my time to sitting with a cancer patient while they go through a 7 hour chemo session. That may not seem like a lot but trust me it is. Being alone knowing that poison is running through your veins is scary. I also plan to take handmade baskets to the patients who are undergoing cancer treatment at this time. I received a basket while I was undergoing chemo and it felt nice to know someone relies that this is not an easy trip for anyone to have to undergo. It is not for the light of heart. I want to make a basket for every cancer patient at my hospital. McClinton Cancer Center saved my life and is still there for me if and when the cancer comes back. They treat each of us as a person not a number.
Bold Self-Care Scholarship
Having survived cancer last year, I am more aware of my body. I have to take more breaks and sleep more. I have to eat better, drink more water and eat more vegetables. But it's not just about your physical being it's also spiritual. You must make time for relaxation and have fun. Life goes by so fast. If I can take an hour and just sit and watch the birds or listen to the river run it makes a huge difference. Taking a hot bath and listening to relaxing music can mean all the difference. Even working can be relaxing if you really enjoy your job. Right now, I am enjoying watching my cats snuggle up next to me while I am writing this. That to me is relaxing. The sound of purring and the feel of his fur makes my heart rates move slower. So, everyone must find a way to relax that works for them.
Bold Friendship Matters Scholarship
Everything. Having survived cancer last year, it really showed me who cared if I lived or died. It showed me how people handle being a friend during the hardest time of your life. Some will drive you crazy smothering you, others will run away because it's easier to not see you at your worse. Deniel is easier than facing the truth and realizing there is nothing they can do to fix me. They feel powerless and that is too much for them to deal with. Does that mean that they don't love me or that not everyone can handle life's battles? I will be honest it was very hurtful to have friendships I had for 35 years just avoid me and not even text me. While other friends wanted to put me in a bubble and protect me from the sun, covid, even the common cold. Friendship isn't about what your someone can give you its more than that. It's about them knowing when to just hold you while you cry...not fix you just be with you.

This is a really hard essay to write as it brings up very painful memories for me. My mother is still living but my father is not. My mother had me at 15 years old. My father was 21 and when he found out my mother was pregnant he joined the service and ran. I have never met my father. Well that's not entirely true he came by my mother's house one time when I was an infant but I don't remember that. I did call him when I was 17 and I tried to ask questions about why he wasn't a part of my life. He denied I was even his child. Then called me back later that night and wanted to meet me but his wife couldn't know. I refused. That hurt so much. To backtrack my mother's 1st husband adopted me after they married so I was his child. He loved me so much and I knew it. But sadly he killed someone and was sent to prison. I was 7 years old when this happened and I didn't understand why Daddy was on TV, why the neighborhood children would ride their bikes past my house and scream, "your Daddys a murder, your Daddys a murder".The loss of him was so hard. I didn't understand what he did wrong and why he wasn't with me. Once I got older my mother explained all the details and I was angry. Why would he do something like that and leave me? Was my love not enough? I grew up not trusting any man least not any of my mother's husbands. As an adult, I have gone through many years of therapy and excepted the fact that my biological father leaving was not because of me. He was young and stupid. The reason he stayed away is that he was a very selfish man and could not face me and what he had done to me. My adopted father did get released from prison when I was 17 and I longed to be his little girl again but this was not to be. He committed a vial crime and is now serving life. I am no longer mad at him either. I understand now that he is to blame for his crimes and losing me and never meeting his grandchildren is the worse punishment of all. I did not let either of them stop me from becoming a parent and loving my children the way I was not loved.
Law Family Single Parent Scholarship
I grew up in a single-parent home so I swore when I had children that they would never have to deal with the emptiness of no one being at home and having to be a mommy to your younger siblings. I was wrong. My marriage lasted just long enough to have two beautiful children. But sadly I was to be a single parent. My children didn't understand why Daddy left. I put my education on the back burner so I could make a living for my children and try to be a better mother than my mother was. I always said: I love you, read stories, and had night-night prayers but sadly that wasn't enough. My children still felt as though my job was more important than they were to me. That could not have been any further from the truth. Each generation in my family has gotten better at showing affection but it's never enough. Once my children were grown and on their own, I decided to finish my degree...30 years later. I put it off and then on March 15, 2021, my whole life changed. It was to be discovered I was Stage 4B Colon Cancer. Being a single mother is hard enough but at the scariest time in my life, I had no one to lean on. I am proud to say with God's love and my stubbornness I am now in remission. I will finish my B.A. and I will become an advocate for Colon cancer awareness. I am already sponsoring a child who has cancer. I would not wish any of this on anyone let alone a child.

I am Stage 4B Colon Cancer. I am now in remission. The last 6 months have been a roller coaster, to say the least. I decided while I've been on disability to endure my chemo I will finish my B.A. My daughter is a student and is working toward her Masters's. I am looking forward to finishing my degree so I can financially support my disabled mother and disabled autistic son. If I work hard I may be able to finish my degree early. My biggest concern is financial. I am in the process of applying for every grant that is available to me. I'm confident that I will find a way to make it through the next 4 years. On March 15, 2021, I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. My entire world changed that day. It was found I had a tumor in my colon. It was determined I had cancer. Two days later I was in surgery to remove the mass, while inside the doctor discovered that cancer had Mets to my ovaries. The doctor made a split decision and removed both ovaries. When I awoke I was given the news that I had Stage 4B Colon Cancer. This is the worst stage of colon cancer. I don’t remember much after that. Scared is an understatement. The doctor was trying to explain our plan to defeat cancer, I didn’t hear anything he said. I underwent six months of intense chemo. This past Friday it was determined I was in remission and I rang my bell! That is when I decided to finish what I started many many years ago…my degree! I will make time every day to work on my homework and make a place where I can concentrate.

I am a 50 years old stage 4B Colon cancer survivor, returning college student after 30 years, sole provider for my disabled 66-year-old mother, and my 27-year-old autistic son. While I was fighting for my life I was fired for having cancer and had to depend on my mother's social security to live. Never really thought about it till now. While I was undergoing chemo for 6 months I was blessed enough to have amazing family and friends to help me emotionally, spiritually, and financially. Since I am in remission I am taking online classes to finally finish my B.A. in Business Management. I have been hired by an amazing company and I love my job. Do I make a lot of money...no? Yes, I make more than I've ever made in my life but it isn't enough. I'm trying to work which requires clothes I've never worn, feeding 3 people and paying all the bills. And then I decided to finish my degree. Sometimes it feels a little overwhelming. I am grateful for the career I have and am very excited to be a part of the beginning stages of our resort. I just want to finish my degree so I can make more money and make my family's lives easier. I have already started giving back. I sponsored a cancer-stricken child at a hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas. I know it's not a lot but NO child should ever have to go through what I went through. I am also a mentor for a fellow cancer victim. I help and try and explain what to expect and what they feel is normal. Someone was there for me so I want to return the favor. My plan after graduation is to go to my boss and ask for a 15,000 raise per year. Being that I am Human Resources and Payroll and the Administration Manager I know what everyone earns. I know I don't have a degree yet so I understand why they make more. So once I finish my degree I will be requiring a raise. I plan to donate not only my money but my time at the cancer center I go to. I will make goodie bags and take them to the cancer patients undergoing chemo. I will volunteer my time to sit with them during chemo. This is one battle no one should ever have to face alone. If they need their house cleaned I will do it, make meals, or run errands.

I just want to finish my degree so I can make more money and make my family's lives easier. I have already started giving back. I sponsored a cancer-stricken child at a hospital in Ft. Worth, Texas. NO child should ever have to go through what I went through. I am also a mentor for a fellow cancer victim. I help and try and explain what to expect and what they feel is normal. My plan after graduation is to go to my boss and ask for a 15,000 raise per year.

Hello, my name is Diane Miller, I am only 50 years old. On March 15, 2021, my entire life was turned upside down! I was informed that I had Colon Cancer 4B. My whole world came crumbling down in front of my eyes. I had to undergo having 6 feet of my colon and both my ovaries removed and then 6 months of intense chemotherapy. While I was off work, to recover from surgery and chemotherapy, I took this time to reflect on what was really important to me. First and foremost, living life to the fullest. Unfortunately, I was terminated by my company while I was on medical leave due to not being able to fulfill my job duties as a Store Manager. At first, I was angry but then I took the time to realize one door must close so another can open. God has a reason for everything that happens! So I began to look for a better career, not just a job. I needed to look for a place where I could use my brain and my creativity not just my brawns. I also decided to finish my Business Degree, something I had been putting off for 30 years. So I took the advice of my 24-year-old college graduate daughter and began my journey toward my B.A. in Business. I am currently proud to say I am cancer-free, a full-time college student, and blessed to say I found a career in the field I am attending college for. I could not have gotten to this point in my life without the love and support of my amazing friends and family. Am I afraid that cancer may come back? Yes! But I will continue to live as though it won't.

I am Stage 4B Colon Cancer. The last 6 months have been a roller coaster. I decided while I've been enduring my chemo I would finish my B.A. I am looking forward to finishing my degree so I can financially support my disabled mother and autistic son. I'm confident that I will find a way to make it through the next 2 years.
On March 15, 2021, I was taken by ambulance to the hospital. My entire world changed that day. It was found I had a tumor in my colon. It was determined I had cancer. Two days later I was in surgery to remove the mass and half my colon, while inside the doctor discovered that cancer had Mets to my ovaries. The doctor made a split decision and removed both ovaries as well. When I awoke I was given the news that I had Stage 4B Colon Cancer. This is the worst stage of colon cancer. I don’t remember much after that. Scared is an understatement. The doctor was trying to explain our plan to defeat cancer, but I didn’t hear anything he said. I underwent six months of intense chemo. Side effects were horrible, to say the least. This past Friday it was determined I was in remission and I rang my bell! That is when I decided to finish what I started many years ago…my degree! I will make time every day to work on my homework and make a place where I can concentrate!

Left Behind Series
Left Behind tells the story of the end times (set in the contemporary era), in which true believers in Christ have been "raptured" (taken instantly to heaven), leaving the world shattered and chaotic. As people scramble for answers, a Romanian politician named Nicolae Jetty Carpathia rises to become secretary-general of the United Nations, promising to restore peace and stability to all nations. What most of the world does not realize is that Carpathia is actually the Antichrist as told in the Bible. Coming to grips with the truth and becoming born-again Christians, pilot Rayford Steele, his daughter Chloe, their pastor Bruce Barnes, and journalist Cameron "Buck" Williams begin their quest as the Tribulation Force to help save the lost and prepare for the coming Tribulation, in which God will rain down judgment on the world for seven years.

"On the Outskirts of Heaven"
My grandpa taught me about buck knives and shotguns
How to cast an old Zebco, how to work a stick shift
He taught me the Bible about all twelve disciples
And he made sure that I know there's life after this
With pearly gates
Streets of gold
He said if I just believe
That's where I'll go
But Lord when I die, I wanna live on the outskirts of Heaven
Where there's dirt roads for miles hay in the fields and fish in the river
Where there's dogwood trees and honeybees and blue skies and green grass forever
Lord when I die, I wanna live on the outskirts of Heaven
Now it says in the King James in the almighty's kingdom
He mentions a mansion that he's built just for me
Now I'll gladly trade it for a farmhouse with acreage
And a back yard that's shaded, and a squeaky front porch swing
That's where I wanna hang my wings
When I die, I wanna live on the outskirts of Heaven
Where there's dirt roads for miles hay in the fields and fish in the river
Where there's dogwood trees and honeybees and blue skies and green grass forever
So Lord when I die, I wanna live on the outskirts of Heaven... yeah
Yeah, the good Lord knows me, he knows I need blue skies and green grass forever
Lord when I die, I wanna live on the outskirts of Heaven

I am a 50-year-old woman and just finished a 6-month regimen of chemo. I am Stage 4B Colon Cancer. The last 6 months have been a roller coaster, to say the least. I am looking forward to finishing my degree so I can financially support my disabled mother and disabled son. My mother is 66 and can not work and lives on social security and can not support herself. My son is 27 and Autistic and can not live alone. I want to be able to take care of both of them.
