Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship
My favorite Spider-Man is Tobey Maguire not only because of the performance he put up in the Spider-Man movies, but especially Spider-Man Two. Spider-Man 2 had me on the edge of my seat, in shackles, yelling at the TV and the whole nine yards. I love his dancing scene in Spider-Man 2. I also feel bad for Tobey outside of his Spider-Man persona because he doesn't want to be recorded or photographed all the time so there are some pictures of him where he looks absolutely caught off guard and they are often taken at an airport. He's also unironically funny to me. My second favorite Spider-Man is Tom Holland, I think that he slipped into the character of Spider-Man easily and enjoyed being Spider-Man too. One thing that I've learned from watching Spider-Man movies is that you're going to get obstacles and you will go through some unfortunate events, but you'll get through them. It will be hard and it won't be as easygoing or smooth as you hope. it will be hard, get better, then get hard again, then get better again because life is full of ups and downs. Ultimately it is up to you to save the day, because no one going to save you except for yourself.
New Kids Can Scholarship
Growing up my mother moved frequently and for me, that meant being new at a lot of schools. Being new can affect you in many ways. It can make you more anxious, scared, nervous, timid, and introverted. When you're a new kid at a school you don't know anyone or where anything is, and talking to people even if it is asking for directions can be difficult. People who notice that you are new will try all sorts of things like pick on you, avoid you, or bombard you and that can be overwhelming. Trying to find a community at a new school can be challenging too because it is hard to trust a group of people you just met, which is normal due to the fact that trust and relationships are formed through time and interactions. I have had goals that I had to postpone because i was switched to a new school, being switched to a new school meant I had to learn the layout, find out where my classes were, find out where I could find school resources like tutoring or scholarships if they had any, become acquainted with my teachers and other staff, catch up to the new district curriculum and so much more. Which was more difficult than I anticipated it to be, when I would ask students where I could find certain classrooms most avoided me or didn't want to answer the question. While I was in classes I found it hard to catch on to the work and learn anything, I found it even harder to ask the teacher for assistance because I didn't know them, and I didn't know anyone in the class that I could ask for help. When I went to the office to see where I could find resources I was always redirected to another counselor and never given an answer. I didn't have a safe space to go to when I got overwhelmed and to the point where I felt like I was going to melt. Being a new kid was difficult and overwhelming at first but at the same time, it was relieving because it was like a new start. A new place to make new friends and get new rewards and honors. after a while of being a new kid, i started making friends and getting awards and finding out the resources, i even eventually found a safe mental space place.
Hester Richardson Powell Memorial Service Scholarship
I have demonstrated resilience towards companies and employment places that disapproved of or resented my natural hair. When my hair was in an afro I usually wore it in a slick back low ponytail, I wore this style to go and apply for jobs. Those jobs looked at my hair and frowned upon it. I didn't think much of it during the first three jobs but after that, I started to notice they were more likely to reject me after they looked at my hair. I took this personally because I love my hair, it is my crown. I take pride in my hair. I found it really messed up how companies will deny you work if your hair is a certain type of texture, or if you are of a certain color. I felt as if the color of someone's skin or the texture of their hair shouldn't define whether or not they are eligible for the job. I felt like someone's eligibility to work should be based on whether or not they have the skill set, and physical capabilities should determine whether or not they should work there. So what I did was I wore my hair loud and proud at the summer job I got. I wore flowers in my hair everywhere I went. I encourage other African-American women to wear their hair and not be ashamed of it.
Another way I have demonstrated resilience is by speaking up about unfair circumstances as a student. For lunch, we have to make a line going through a tiny door to get into the cafeteria to get food. Other students in those lines are often pushed, shoved, hit, or smushed trying to get through and get food. Keep in mind there are two sides with two different doors. One is a small single door and the other is a big double door. I told the counselors and higher staff that both doors should be open so that students can pick what they want to eat and stand in a line for it without having to be pushed, shoved, or hurt in any way. Not only will this decrease the chance of injury it will also make the student lines flow more smoothly and decrease hostility because students no longer have to fight for their spots in the lines. I refuse to be smushed and risk injury to get school food . By speaking up i encouraged other students to speak up and talk with counselors to make a change .
Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
In 2020 I lost my father to a long ongoing battle with cancer, it took a very big toll on me it felt as if I had lost myself. I didn't have the motivation to go on with school, hobbies, extracurricular activities, and even life itself. Then not so soon after my dad passed away my auntie passed away and I was heartbroken I cried so hard that my face swelled I sat and thought about both of the deaths for a long time
After a few months passed by I realized that they would've wanted me to continue and not give up, came to a solution that I'll work hard to achieve awards in school, graduate, to spend my free time making memories with friends and family who's next days aren't promised, to make it into an HBCU so no matter how hard it was I didn't succumb to defeat and quit. I have decided to fight for my peace, tranquility, happiness, friends and family because, at the end of the day, they are my backbone, my support system, without them I would be in shambles, without them I wouldn't have any uplifting memories to look back on during hard times.
