Anyone I know would describe me as the girl obsessed with fashion and sewing, which is true. But what is more important to me is the prospect of helping others. Seeing others happy is what provides me with the greatest sense of joy and satisfaction.

Carmel High School Greyhound of the Year Scholarship
As crazy as it sounds, school has always been a safe space for me. In elementary school, I could walk into the classroom and be immediately transported into a different dimension as I discussed my latest read with my best friends. In middle school, if I was having a rough day, walking into choir at the end would always make it better. So when high school seemingly slapped me in the face with anxiety, I knew that I wanted to do everything in my power to make sure that others knew their value.
In May of 2018, I forced my older brother to drive me to school at six in the morning so that I could cover the entire freshmen girl's bathroom in nearly 500 sticky notes, each filled with words of affirmation. I didn't need to tell anyone that it was me because seeing everyone's smiles was more than enough credit.
I will be the first to admit that learning Spanish was not my strong suit. I studied and practiced, but after a while, it stopped coming to me naturally. However, that did not stop me from using what I did know to help others. As a frequent volunteer shopper at Our Lady of Mount Carmel's Merciful Help Center, I often come across customers who speak little to no English. When I notice, I transition into my slow and broken Spanish -- "Por favor tome todo lo que su familia pueda usar..." -- their relief wipes across their brightened eyes. If nothing else I do matters, this does.
Serving my community is without a doubt my greatest passion. In everything I do, I consider how I can make the experience more enjoyable for others. As a person going into the fashion industry, it is important to me to remain focused on sustainability and ethical practices. In clubs and at work, I constantly remind myself to engage in servant leadership; to put others' needs before my own.
I will be unfulfilled both personally and professionally if I am not doing everything in my power to make the world a better place, so I have made and will continue to make community service my greatest priority in everything I do.
