I began running track in 10th grade of high school and started running cross country in 11th grade. Both of these sports have shaped me in ways I could never have imagined. They have taught me invaluable lessons, not just about athletics, but about life itself. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of perseverance. Whether I was sprinting in track or enduring a long cross-country race, there were countless moments when I wanted to quit. I would be exhausted, mentally and physically drained, and feel like I couldn’t go on. But in those moments, I learned that pushing through those feelings of fatigue and continuing to run, even when I felt like giving up, was where true growth happened. Through these sports, I learned to always push myself to the best of my ability. Running taught me that success isn’t about being the fastest or winning every race—it’s about improving, doing your best, and overcoming the challenges you face along the way. There were races where I didn’t come in first place, but I always focused on how I had improved compared to previous races, and that kept me motivated. It’s not about comparing myself to others; it’s about focusing on my own progress and striving to be the best version of myself. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned in track and cross country is the importance of not comparing myself to others. In the beginning, I often found myself frustrated by the fact that some of my teammates were faster than I was. It was easy to feel discouraged and wonder why I wasn’t at their level. However, as time went on, I realized that everyone has their own pace and their own path to success. I am my own person with unique strengths and abilities. This realization helped me embrace my individuality and focus on my own journey, rather than trying to measure up to others. These experiences have not only shaped my athletic abilities but have also shaped my character. They’ve taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and self-acceptance. I’ve learned that life is full of challenges and setbacks, but those moments don’t define us. What defines us is how we rise up and continue moving forward. I believe that I can make an impact on others by sharing the lessons I’ve learned from my athletic journey. I want to encourage others to push through their struggles, embrace their individuality, and trust that their hard work will pay off. By leading by example and supporting others along their own paths, I hope to inspire them to never give up and to always keep striving to reach their full potential. Just like in running, the race is about personal growth, and I want to help others see that their journey is just as important as the finish line.

My name is Marissa Houston, and I am 19 years old from Columbus, Mississippi. I am currently pursuing an online education at East Mississippi Community College, where I am majoring in nursing. From a young age, I have felt a deep passion for helping others and making a positive impact on their lives. Whether it was comforting a friend, supporting family members, or volunteering in my community, I have always felt a strong sense of purpose in caring for others. This passion, combined with my love for science—particularly biology—has led me to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can serve others while also satisfying my curiosity about how the human body works. Studying nursing has been an incredible journey that has both challenged and inspired me. It has reinforced my belief that nursing is not just a job, but a calling—one that requires dedication, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning. However, pursuing higher education comes with financial challenges. This scholarship would be an invaluable resource in helping me overcome these obstacles. It would ease the financial strain of tuition and materials, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies. The additional stability would also open the door for me to engage in hands-on opportunities, such as internships and volunteer work, which are essential for building the skills and experience I need to thrive in my career. My ultimate goal is to become a nurse who not only provides excellent medical care but also offers emotional support and encouragement to patients and their families during some of their most difficult moments. I am passionate about making a real difference in people’s lives, whether that’s through providing physical healing, listening with empathy, or simply offering a kind word. I also hope to use my education and career to address disparities in healthcare, particularly in underserved communities, where compassionate and skilled healthcare professionals are often needed the most. This scholarship represents more than financial assistance to me—it is an investment in my future and in the impact I hope to have on others. By reducing the financial barriers to my education, this scholarship would bring me closer to my dream of becoming a nurse who serves with compassion, skill, and a heart dedicated to improving lives. In conclusion, I am deeply committed to pursuing a career in nursing, where I can combine my passion for caring for others with my love for science. This scholarship would provide me with the support I need to overcome financial challenges and fully focus on my education and professional development. It would enable me to gain the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to serve my future patients with excellence and compassion. By investing in my education, this scholarship would not only help me achieve my goals but also allow me to give back to my community and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Certainly! Here’s a 400-word version of your response: From a young age, I have felt a deep sense of compassion for others and a strong desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it was helping a friend through a difficult time or volunteering in my community, I’ve always found joy in caring for others and seeing how even small acts of kindness can create meaningful change. This passion for helping people, combined with my academic interest in biology, has inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare. In school, biology quickly became one of my favorite subjects. I was fascinated by learning how the human body functions, from the intricate processes at the cellular level to the ways different systems work together to maintain health. Understanding how science can be applied to real-world challenges in medicine opened my eyes to the incredible possibilities within the healthcare field. These interests solidified my desire to work in a profession where I can combine my love of science with my natural inclination to care for others. My ultimate goal is to specialize in Nursing to be an RN, where I can directly contribute to improving patients’ health and quality of life. I envision myself working in a hands-on role where I can build meaningful relationships with patients and their families, providing not only physical care but also emotional support during challenging times. I believe that healthcare is not just about treating symptoms but about caring for the whole person, and I want to embody that philosophy in my work. Looking further ahead, I hope to grow within my field and take on new challenges that allow me to expand my impact. This might include advancing my education, specializing in a particular area, or taking on leadership roles. Additionally, I am passionate about addressing disparities in healthcare and aim to contribute to initiatives that ensure underserved communities have access to the care they deserve. This scholarship would be incredibly beneficial for me as I work toward my goal of pursuing a career in healthcare. It would provide the financial support needed to focus on my studies and gain the knowledge and skills required to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. By alleviating some of the financial burden, the scholarship would allow me to dedicate more time to excelling academically and participating in opportunities like internships or volunteer work that will prepare me for my future career. Ultimately, it would help me take one step closer to achieving my dream of caring for others and improving their quality of life.

Background and Inspiration for Higher Education: I come from a single-parent household with five siblings and have lived in Columbus, Mississippi, my entire life. Growing up, I witnessed my mother’s unwavering dedication to provide for our family despite the challenges we faced. Her resilience inspired me to dream big and strive for a better future. I graduated from New Hope High School with honors, an achievement I am proud of as it reflects my determination to excel academically. The decision to pursue higher education was driven by a desire to create a better life for myself and, one day, for my own family. I aspire to build generational wealth and gain access to a broader range of career opportunities that will allow me to make a lasting impact. Challenges Overcome and Lessons Learned: One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced is growing up in a household where resources were limited. This taught me the importance of hard work, perseverance, and gratitude. Balancing academics with responsibilities at home was not always easy, but it helped me develop time management skills and a strong work ethic. I also learned the value of community, as my family, friends, and teachers often came together to support me. These experiences shaped me into a resilient and resourceful individual who is determined to rise above obstacles and make the most of every opportunity. A Person Who Has Inspired Me: My mother has been my greatest inspiration. Despite the hardships she faced as a single parent raising six children, she never gave up. Her strength, faith, and selflessness taught me that determination and hard work can overcome even the most difficult circumstances. Watching her sacrifices motivated me to pursue higher education so I can create a better future for myself and repay her sacrifices by contributing to my family’s well-being. Post-Graduate Plans: After completing my degree, I plan to establish a career that aligns with my passions and allows me to give back to my community. I aim to create opportunities for others, just as I was given opportunities to succeed. My ultimate goal is to build generational wealth while mentoring and inspiring young people from similar backgrounds to dream bigger and pursue their own goals. By investing in myself and others, I hope to make a lasting impact that reflects the values my mother instilled in me. In conclusion, my journey has been shaped by the challenges I’ve faced, the inspiration I’ve drawn from my mother, and my desire to create a brighter future for myself and others. Pursuing higher education is not just a personal goal but a stepping stone toward breaking barriers, building generational wealth, and giving back to my community. With resilience, determination, and faith, I am committed to turning my aspirations into reality and leaving a positive legacy for those who come after me. This opportunity to further my education represents not only a chance to grow but also a chance to honor the sacrifices of those who have supported me along the way.

One time when I relied deeply on my faith to overcome a significant challenge was during a period in college when I was juggling multiple demanding responsibilities. Between a heavy course load, a part-time job, volunteer commitments, and unexpected family struggles, I felt completely overwhelmed. Each day seemed like an endless balancing act, and despite my efforts, it felt as if I was always falling short somewhere. My anxiety began to increase, and I started to question whether I would be able to make it through without sacrificing my mental and physical health. In the midst of these struggles, I turned to my faith as a source of strength and guidance. Initially, I began setting aside a few minutes each morning for prayer and reflection, hoping to find some peace in the chaos. Over time, these moments became my anchor, allowing me to pause and remind myself that I wasn’t facing these challenges alone. In prayer, I found the courage to surrender some of my burdens, placing my trust in a higher power to guide me through. This act of faith helped me realize that while I couldn’t control everything, I could trust in the idea that there was a larger purpose to my struggles. Leaning on my faith also helped me reframe my mindset around the challenges I was facing. Rather than seeing them as obstacles to overcome, I started viewing them as opportunities to learn and grow. I reminded myself that every experience, even the difficult ones, had something to teach me. With this perspective, I felt a sense of peace that enabled me to tackle each day with a little more grace and patience. Faith provided me with a renewed outlook, helping me move forward with a sense of purpose and acceptance, rather than resistance or frustration. During this period, I also leaned into my faith community for support. I shared my struggles with a few trusted friends who were part of the same community, and they listened without judgment, offering encouragement and prayers. This support network reminded me that I wasn’t alone on my journey, and it gave me the strength to keep going, knowing that others were rooting for me and keeping me in their thoughts. They helped me see that it was okay to ask for help, and their compassion deepened my own faith, as I felt held up by the love and support of others. As I navigated this challenging time, I came to understand that faith could be a powerful source of resilience, allowing me to confront uncertainty with a sense of hope. Through prayer and the support of my community, I not only managed to get through that difficult period but emerged stronger and more grounded. This experience taught me that faith isn’t just about seeking answers but also about trusting the process, even when the path isn’t clear. Looking back, I see that this time of struggle was instrumental in shaping my character. It deepened my commitment to my faith and strengthened my belief in the power of community. Now, whenever I face new challenges, I remember that experience and trust that my faith will guide me, as it did then, with strength, hope, and grace.

Mental health is a topic that has gained more attention in recent years, but there is still a long way to go in terms of making affordable and accessible care available to everyone who needs it. As someone who has personally struggled with mental health issues, I am deeply passionate about finding solutions to this problem. In this essay, I will outline my unique contribution to making mental health care affordable and accessible to all. First and foremost, I believe that education is key. Many people still hold stigmas and misconceptions surrounding mental health, which can prevent them from seeking help or supporting others who are struggling. Therefore, my contribution would involve creating educational programs that aim to break down these barriers and promote understanding and empathy towards mental health issues. These programs would be targeted towards schools, workplaces, and communities, in order to reach people of all ages and backgrounds. By educating society on the importance of mental health and how to support those in need, we can create a more accepting and inclusive environment for those seeking help. In conclusion, my unique contribution to making mental health care affordable and accessible would involve a combination of education, technology, policy change, and addressing systemic issues. By implementing these solutions, we can create a society that prioritizes mental health and provides support for those in need. Mental health care should not be a privilege, but a basic human right.

I have always been drawn to the field of nursing. Since middle school, I loved science class in general and learning about the human body and how it works. As I grew older, my interest in healthcare had increased and I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in this field. First, one reason that I chose nursing as my career is because I believe that I can make an impact on people's lives in the community. It also combines my passion for helping others in need and my love for science. As I learned more about the nursing profession, I realized that it is the perfect blend of science, compassion, and critical thinking. Nurses play a crucial role in patient care, and I aspire to be a part of that gentle profession. One of my main goals as a nurse is to create a positive and safe environment on the lives of patients. I want to be able to make a difference in their health and well-being, whether it be through providing hands-on-care, giving them emotional support, or advocating for their needs. I believe that being a nurse will allow me to have a direct impact on individuals, which is both rewarding and fulfilling. On a personal level, pursuing this career is important to me because I have a long history of family health issues. For example, my grandmother has dealt with numerous health related issues for a long time and she has been in and out of the hospital for almost two months. Seeing her struggle physically has motivated me to help other people that are battling with health problems. I think that it is important to help those that are not in a good health state. In order to achieve my professional passion for nursing, I have set several personal goals for myself. First and foremost, I am committed to continuously learning and growing to become a nurse. I plan to pursue advanced education and training to expand my knowledge and skills in certain areas. I also want to become involved in professional organizations to help me along the way to contribute to the nursing community. Furthermore, I am dedicated to maintaining a strong work-life as a nurse. I understand the demanding nature of the profession and how stressful it can be to take on such a role. But I believe that taking care of myself is significant to providing the best care for patients. I plant to prioritize self-care and seek support from my future colleagues and mentors to prevent burnout and maintain my passion for nursing. In conclusion, my passion for helping others and the desire to make a positive impact in people's lives have led me to choose nursing as my field of interest. Through my work, I hope to provide health and wellness, equitable care, and continuously learn and grow. I am committed to using my skills, knowledge, and compassion to make a difference in the lives of others.

One adversity that I have overcome was becoming a better runner in Track and Field. When I first made the decision to run my sophomore year, I was very out of shape and I felt discouraged because the coach would never let me compete in any of the meets even though I showed up to every practice. Even though I didn't get to compete in any of the meets, It gave me the motivation to want to work harder at practice. At first, it was hard and challenging because my body was not used to it but over time I began to see progress. Moreover, I also joined the cross-country during my junior and senior year. I think running cross-country was the best decision that I made because it has prepared and conditioned me for track season. While running track and cross country, I have faced numerous challenges, such mental obstacles and tough competition. However, I have been able to overcome those adversities and continue to excel in the sports that I love. One particular adversity that I struggled with was not striding when I ran not having the right breathing technique. But I had a good coach that would correct me and teach me how to run and breathe while I ran and it has helped during my current track season. Furthermore, another example of an adversity that I faced was during cross country season, I had put a lot of strain on my body that I didn't realized that I was overworking myself that I began to have trouble with my heart and breathing. It was a scary situation but come to find out my heart had been overstrained and my troponin was very high. This experience has influenced me to pursue a career in sports medicine, as I want to help other athletes be aware of their bodies and know to properly hydrate themselves so they could reach their full potential as an athlete. As a result, despite the adversities that I have experienced, being a part of the track and cross country teams has helped me develop character traits that would be useful in the medical field such as patience, dedication, and resilience. I think continuing to run can improve cardiovascular health and overall physical fitness. This will benefit me in the medical field by increasing stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks. In conclusion, the challenges that I have experienced in track and cross country has helped me become the athlete I am today. Being a member of both teams has taught me a lot and I developed characteristics that will later on help me in my career as a nurse.

Growing up, I attended church regularly on Sundays and then Bible study on Wednesday. When I was younger I didn't quite understand what it meant to serve God or have a relationship with him. But deep down inside, I always knew he was real. As I got older, during the pandemic in 2020, I decided to give my life to Jesus and make him my Lord and savior. After I made that decision, my life changed drastically after. My relationship with Jesus has been the foundation of my faith. it has taught me love, compassion, forgiveness, and grace. Through him, I have learned to trust in His plan for my life and to seek His guidance in all that I do. Throughout my educational journey, I plan to implement my faith by striving to do my best, treating others with kindness and respect, and using my knowledge to make a positive impact on the world. Faith has always been the number one thing I have struggled with when it came to certain situations. Last year, my mom was let go from her job and her being the only parent that me and my five siblings relied on, it became hard. I noticed that during school everything that I was going through at that time it began to affect me mentally while doing work. Furthermore, it didn't allow what I was going through to deter my relationship with God because I knew that everything he was allowing to happen in my life, it later on made me stronger and it increased my faith to trust in him always. In addition, I know that in today's generation serving God isn't accepted. Being a teenager and having a relationship with Jesus has affected me because I no longer have the same bonds that I had with people that I grew up with. For example, when I was going through a hard time last year, I felt was felt like I was isolated from everyone around me and I began to question God why I was going through this. But overtime, my relationship with Jesus has taught me that that as a follower of him, we are going to experience hardships but we should continue to have faith and trust that he will bring us through. Having a relationship with Jesus has brought me peace, comfort, and guidance in school and outside. It helped me develop a more positive attitude and it taught me how to live modest. Additionally, having faith in Jesus can provide a sense of purpose and motivation in pursuing academic goals and using your God given talents to serve others. In conclusion, my relationship with Jesus has taught what it's like to be young and still live for him. It has also helped shape me into the person that God created me to be and that is to treat others with, love, respect, and compassion. I believe that having a relationship with Jesus is important because he gives us peace and comfort in the midst of challenging times.

I was born and raised in Columbus, Mississippi and I come from a devoted family of five that was raised by a single mother. The value of giving back to the community or showing compassion among others has always been emphasized. Growing up, I was taught the importance to give to help those in my family and in the community because later on you will be blessed for your act of kindness. Whether it was helping out at family gatherings when being asked to, or helping someone in need, I have always been inspired to make a positive impact. Firstly, at my church I have served food plates for the needy in the community, a special time to me was when we did the Thanksgiving day meals for the families. During that time of the year it can be hard on some families because not everyone is able to gather with loved ones and cherish those memories with them, and so providing warm meals for the community has always brought me happiness because of the smiles it brings to the families. Furthermore, I have helped with school supply drives gathering backpacks, pencils, paper, among other items. The toy drive and "shoebox" Christmas were always fun to work on. Giving back to the community has been something I wanted to do since I was a young girl and seeing the joy that it brings to families will always inspire me to continue helping those in need. Also, during the pandemic I became a member of an organization called "Girls On A Mission" that was founded by my long-term friend. Girls On A Mission puts up flyers around the neighborhood to let girls give the opportunity to have someone who cares listen to them and their problems they may be having. Lastly, my future plans for college is to attend Mississippi State to pursue a nursing degree. I plan to continue giving back to my community and helping those in need and I think this career will help me achieve my goals. While actively giving back to the community, I will also devote my time to caring for people who are sick. In conclusion, I don't look at myself as being misfortunate because I came from a single parent home, in fact it has helped shaped into the person I am today. I'm proud of where I came from and I look forward to the great things God has in store for me.
